They released this because of the Floatwheel, people have mentioned all the problems with the past one wheels in the comments on their social media they don't delete them as soon as you mention Floatwheel you're banned from commenting, only I can see my comments now
GT-S sells for about 39% higher price than the GT. You guys know manufacturing costs, so I'm wondering what is your estimate of the % additional cost for FM to build the GT-S vs. GT? I suspect the profit margin is super-sized on the GT-S. Thanks for the thorough and objective review of the GT-S. TFL = Truth!
Usually profit margin is about the same throughout a lineup of similar products. BUT, the profit contribution on a more expensive wheel will be higher, so it's worth having.
Now that we're 8 months after release, we know a little bit more about the GTS and where the cost comes from. Yes, there is always going to be a profit margin, however they did use some higher quality parts in here that are expensive. The stronger magnets added a little more cost. The p45b cells came out only a little bit before the GTS did, they were expensive then and they are still expensive now. Probably the biggest cost hike is going to come from the SKF bearings. Yes, SKF has a reputation for making the best bearings in the world, however, for the application, I don't think you need SKF bearings and also the specific bearings they got are a questionable choice. The SKF bearings that FM is using have a single non-contacting seal. The GTS uses the same bearings that were used on the Plus, before switching over to the much cheaper C&U bearings.
Being a full-time kilt wearer, fenders are almost a must. No one wants road salsa tossed up there. Cool seeing a teardown with actual measurements, not just eyeball comparisons. While I like seeing the simple fixes they implemented, I'm disappointed they haven't done anything (apparent) to address the axle weaknesses and heat dissipation issues. Thanks for the continuation of your "Get to know the GT-S" video series.
Mob shop was claiming a thicker axle and different o-rings all sorts of differences. Nice to see it measured with a caliper for proof it's the same. Also FPV quad motors have had curved magnets as the standard for years there's even motors running ring magnets or two rows of magnets with the top and bottom offset, lots of different things that can be done. Back when I was into rc cars some motors for them twist an angle into the stator for more torque I believe and silver wire instead of copper is a tiny bit better, silver plated is much cheaper though and similar performance increase. There's things that could be done to squeeze out a couple extra kv or more torque. Those windings don't look perfect either having a perfect wind on each pole can increase performance a lot more than you'd think, maybe someone can hand wind a motor haha.
oof the work to hand wind a motor for one of these. Brings up a good point. How about say using a slightly lighter gauge wire, but adding more turns. Like the old school RC motors you could purchase a say 10 turn single wire, or a 13 turn triple wire on the stator. 🤖 Each motor had its use cases, torque vs rotation speed. Were you racing a truck or buggy, 4w or 2wd, all the situations had an ideal motor for what you were doing. I need a shop with all the things, and more time on my hands. I envy Jeff and TFL way to do your homework gents.

“Big Problem” this is what Gt should have been to start, also needs standard 6” rim and ability for user replaceable battery & components for $2200 price, 👍👍video guys
@@redboyjan I don’t think couple hundred off a used GT that new costs thousands is much of a deal, this is all because it’s overpriced by FM to begin with, GT-s series should cost around $2000 have better range and user replaceable battery & components, $3200 insane‼️🤦♂️
Hey a little trick for those gaskets that seem to grow when you take the cover off. Boil it in hot water and it will shrink back down to size. Its an old carburetor trick. Works like a charm.
To spendy for me, I would go EUC for 3k, I dont think I am going to buy another one wheel at this point I just crusie my XR but am a fat bastard so maybe float wheel ?!!? Was hoping you were gonna measure the voltage to see if they reveresed wires on the connectors or color codes Thanks for ripping it down!!
A dab from $3 bottle of Harbor Freight threadlock(enough for hundreds to thousands of fasteners) would fix the problem. And FM could buy that shit in bulk, so it'll be a dick move if they didn't start including it.
I don't know the specifics when it's required, but isn't it a regulation that the cable connected to the battery has to be that orange one? At least on EVs and similar that's a thing
Jon Stock of TheMobStop in his breakdown found that the GTS axle looked definitively thicker. to be fair, he didn't measure it, he was eyeballin the axle & o-ring
Any cable carrying voltage greater than 60V DC in automotive applications must be colored orange. Maybe they have to for PEVs or felt they should follow that safety guideline...
a 1kw motor will equal to 1000rpm per volt, they didnt need to change the windings. if they did, adding windings adds kw/rpm so the top speed potential increases but windings dont effect torque. Torque is generally increased by stator thickness (bearing to bearing). Stator diameter would require additional windings and that only increases the motors top speed per input volt and doesnt effect torque. The last thing is increasing the wire guage for the windings tends to improve the motor quality in electric motors so that would be the best thing they could do.
The fact you guys were like "anything we do in here could brick the board" just makes it a no-go for me outright. Can't stand the anti-repair stance from these chuckle-fucks. Love that unicorn XR life.. Also love that FM is competing with where the market is going, even if I still won't be buying another FM board. FW / VESC is it, baby.

Regualr GT used is at a reasonable price now, so maybe a used GT-S next year is the move, if you have aftermarket parts to swap in?

The orange cable is because there is a STKY (Stuff That Kills You) situation due to the voltages.
Yeah, same coloring on high voltage cables in hybrids and EVs.
