I'm a short, fat, weak, middle-aged woman who's just started boxing... if I got into a worst-case-scenario, I'd opt for the headbutt- it'd leave my hands free if he grabs me by the head if it failed, and allowing me an out to try something else; but if it succeeds, he's blinded from the pain, teary-eyed at least, and possibly bloodied, and *blinded* is more important to me than taking him down. I'm weak: if I knock him down, he'll just get right back up again IF he goes down at all, but if he can't see where I ran, i have the chance to get away and call for help.
Putting your ego aside and walking away from a potential physical confrontation is the best thing to do, but learning to fight when the time comes and when it's needed is equally important.
This is how you know Tony has truly been in lots of real fights. Two of the three techniques were not even boxing, but straight, practical and effective. Only someone who has been in a lot of real fights would know these moves. Tony is the best boxing/fight coach on UA-cam
@@raelalexander9202 we need to learn it because even if you're not fighting a highly trained fighter you still fighting a stranger you don't know if they got a knife on them or if they're good at wrestling it's genuinely a good sport to learn
Tony I spend a lot of time in the UK for work. I saw you at an event a good while ago and you were an absolute gentleman. You are one of those people others want to be around great job as an ambassador for the sport.
As a martial artist and instructor, I have to say this is great content. I completely agree with everything in this video. You've earned a new follower!
Go to boxing and just start learning basics how to stand how to hold your hands and feets. Otherwise these videos will not help you. You are gaining stamina and balance.
Agreed, that surprised me too. I think as a result of offering the handshake and it being accepted you are going to be the one responsible for the fight and any injuries caused.
Thank you for the lesson. As a person who grew up in a bad noighbourhood, 80% of attacks happened when there were more guys than you and maybe you and your friends (most likely you are alone). BJJ or wrestling may be great when you are 1vs1, but it doesn't happen that way on the streets. I agree that most of the time it's better to just use diplomacy, just let them say whatever shit they have to say or run, but sometimes they start touching your friend or GF anyway and you have to fight and boxing is the only real way to defend them, because it's one of the only martial arts that teaches you how to attack and disable quickly, instead of defending against strikes, or wrestle a guy on the ground, while other guys punch your skull into the concrete, or your friend.
you grew up in a bad neighborhood but your username is 'sir revlon' hahah.. are you a knight good sir? xD man just leave bad neighborhoods thats how you solve it, dont be where the dummies are. im glad you arent hurt :)
You wrote - and I quote " when there were more guys than you " I ask you : What kind of English is that ? There can NEVER be more that ONE of YOU You are the only ONE in existence. There never was and there never will be another one of YOU Thus you are :: Some 'one '
I was the smallest kid in my year at school and I'm still a massive introvert to the point I hate even looking my best mates in the eye, but I have been in the infantry for the last 16 years and had the opportunity to do some army boxing. Having the confidence that you can protect yourself gives you the opportunity to be a much better person. keep up the good work, this could really help people struggling to understand their capabilities.
@Doggo I'm UK so can't speak for US units, I can say that now there is limited scope for real ops it might be better choosing a unit that can provide more civilian friendly qualifications. Best of luck whatever you choose mate.
@@wilky952 Ah ok, appreciate the advice, yea heard combat deployments are rare nowadays, will prob end up picking service support or logistics, anyways, cheers to our pals across the sea !
Same as you mate, you feel inferior when you can’t look people in the eye but also feel like your constantly scared of something, mainly conflict I suppose. But when you know how to protect yourself and you are confident with it then you carry yourself very differently and suddenly it becomes much easier to look people in the eyes as you aren’t afraid
@wilky952 - please don’t see being an introvert as a hindrance .. you have the ability to observe things that are going to happen before they do .. observing is better than being loud & over the top as those extroverted people don’t realise what is going on around them .. I see it as a blessing & been able to deal with a few sticky situations before they escalated .. people say “beware of the quiet ones” & it’s right .. embrace your personality & enjoy it .. also thanks for all you do in the military 🙏 ..
Boxing is perfect for self defense. All fights usually start standing up and throwing punches (boxing). Boxing teaches head movement, foot work, how to throw punches/combos, how to take a punch, and the fitness aspect to it. Maybe a little wrestling or jiu jitsu mixed as well.
@@pelgamerz Before I learned how to use my words and the environment around me to avoid trouble, I preferred being the smaller guy in the fight. The bigger guys can hit harder, but if you can avoid getting knocked out, they tire more quickly. Plus, often times they were the ones arrogant enough to start something and were surprised that I could put up a fight.
Hi, Tony! From someone that’s been in a lot of street fights, I would only recommend the “disguised guard” and the hook. An open palm slap and a solar plexus hit are hard skill shots. Most people would miss and give the agressor to come with other attacks. Best thing to do it’s try to avoid the fight and if it’s not possible, be the most agressive possible in the shorter amount of time and than getting out there.
Yeah all that open hand palm stuff is only for fights you are confident you can win like against a smaller opponent, so it defeats the purpose of this video ss that isnt a 'bully' bullys typically are stronger than you. I been in a bunch of streetfights and a muay thai teep kick has literally saved my life at least twice its even effective against guys with knives, but for beginners yeah headbutt or right hook and escape is solid advice
Why is nobody talking about carrying pepper spray or the equivalent thereof, blessing people with the hot sauce goes along way to get away from a situation and if you do have to get physical, it might give you a better advantage and also you can keep a better distance.
I would have added another potential to the face-to-face. In situations where there's a more substantial height difference (making the head butt difficult) the disguised guard followed by a straight, quick stabbing punch to the adam's apple is fast, and being that its coming straight instead of a hook increases the hit probability since its hard to read a shot coming straight on, between their arms and at the bottom of their field of vision. Even though a lot of people may practice, most people telegraph their hook. Somebody who knows his stuff will more than likely block, step back, or roll past the shot. I would also dismiss the whole notion that these shots need to be following honest, clean targets. Just a little bit of practice keeping the hands up while you load up a knee stomp pays a lot of dividends, especially to somebody who is all squared up.
Huh? I would think your Jitz instructor would go for the single or double leg takedown . This slapping thing for me makes no sense at all . Think of all the knockouts you’ve seen ? How many were were put to bed with a bitch slap ?
Tony, i remember watching these videos about 6 months ago. I was a scared kid allways getting picked on by bigger kids. started boxing and have my second fight in november, if anyone reading this is scared of foghting i know how it feels. Tense, anxiety, stress. Remember to throw one punch and run. no shame at all.
Adding to the 1st and best tip of walking away: Never turn your back to them and always believe 💯 of the time the bully will try to sucker punch you. These cowards almost always go for the sucker punch.
@@Tony_Jeffries this video is 100% about sucker punching someone like a coward. Telling someone you don't want to fight, reaching out for a handshake and then hitting them when they shake your hand is beyond horrible advice. I literally cant think of a more cowardly situation to describe a sucker punch. I seriously thought this was satire. I've always enjoyed your channel but i had to unsub on this one.
@@thegraffitiwriterknowsas He said to try to avoid the fight at all times. However, there are assholes out there who would fight you no matter what you say or do. This is for these situations. You don't need many brain cells to figure this out.
In most cases you can avoid the fight. What you said about the stance is spot on with the hands up.. Replace the cross and slap with a throat punch followed by a standard judo leg sweep, no one will challenge you after that. If you're fighting for your life, throat punch then eye poke
@@danieljonsson6230Absolutely, you can kill a person with a throat punch very easily . My throat is so sensitive, I accidentally bump my hand against it with the slightest force and I can’t breathe and feel like I’m choking. I couldn’t imagine getting punched by someone at full force in my throat, no thank you.
Also be careful about dropping someone. Might seem awesome, but closed and open head injuries can result when they hit the ground. Even though you’re not the aggressor, it can cause MASSIVE problems legally.
I honestly think this is why some people have a lot of resistance to hitting. They know the consequences if a major accident occurs. But some people couldn't care less if they kill someone so they are triggered a lot easier. I feel like the ones who don't want to fight are not always afraid of the fight. They are afraid of ending up in jail.
I was attacked , clear on cctv I punched my attacker once knocking them out and I still went to prison and they tried to get compensation out of me. Walk away you cannot win
Recently I had a brief street fight. The other person was a troublemaker. I told them I did not want to fight and to leave me alone, but they assaulted me. I beat them in a very rough unorthodox manner. I had their collar in one hand, and was hitting their face with my other hand. This is a very brief summary of the conflict, but they had struck me first. It was more complex than this. The other person was a troublemaker all day long.
I learned these strategies and strikes when I was about 10 years old and after about a half dozen fights everything became second nature and subconscious. Once my fighting and self defense skills became automatic and subconscious (like typing or playing an piano) it is amazing how much your conscious brain, your visual and reactive awareness is freed up by not having to think. One of my most useful tricks when measuring up someones fighting skill is in their eyes and what they are doing. The best fighters I've ever dealt with keep there eyes constantly open and won't blink or close there eyes until an opponents hand or foot is within centimeters from contact. Inexperienced fighters will blink just with an opponent's flinch or test strikes.
Tony, Your vids are incredible man. I'm 18, 19 in July. I took boxing lessons for about a year as a kid, maybe 13ish years ago. I've been out of shape for a while and have been wanting to pick something back up. I got some new gear and got back to the bag. Found your videos roughly a month ago and the progress I've made is INCREDIBLE! I know the comments say it a lot, but you really do help people out man. I cant thank you enough for guiding me back into boxing (even if im just training at home), doing everything safely and learning as I go. Thanks again
This is just how my father teach me how yo fight in the streets and hes most important rule was don´t you ever start a fight you don´t know you can win, punch hard and get away! Bless you Dad
In place of that headbutt or punch in the up-close scenario, I'm coming across with an elbow. Elbows are nice and reliable, if you're good with them, and I am.
1. Using open hands leaves you many more options than closing your fist at start. You could still go for a punch, you could throw him off balance and do a judo technique, or palm slap him. 2. The step back and counter approach could look much better, legally, because he is aggressing into your personal space. Considering you might be on camera or witnesses are around. Saved me from a lawsuit once: Clearly was being aggressively approached by a angry failed pick pocket. Although a preemptive strike may be justified sometimes, or even unavoidable. But don't ever let it come to this "Eskimo nose kissing" situation. You can't even see opponent's hands there, or might catch a quick elbow! And the closer he is, the shorter your reaction time buffer.
@Agricola Urbanus - is that based on your own experience with fighting on the streets, ring, or local club? As a lot of that is not really relevant to outside world, some cities in various countries (outside of any Western cities - but there is a lot of exception here even in EU countries), crappy hood, and so on. In a lot of places, nobody cares about legal issues (and I'm saying it as a former military, who used to live and travel to over 20+ countries around the planet, probably much more than this, including every country in EU and more > hell, even Iceland, Finland and Switzerland included!, UK, US (Alaska, NY, LA, Hawai), Canada, Japan, several time in Hong Kong, Australia, South America and so on).
@C No. Self defense is illegal. You might have a rude awakening one day! And what if he grabs you and you can't punch him or her? Do you have a witness btw? You have seen too many Hollywood movies maybe.
@C Ask a lawyer, Mr. Dunning Kruger. Stop being a thug using self defense as a pretense to beat people up. If punching people in the face is your standard solution, you should not be allowed in a dojo or gym at all. You never ever even read the law. Btw. it is called bodily harm, and that is illegal prima facie.
@@tannhauser5399 When I speak of legality, it should be self-evident that it is in a context where a functional legal system and law enforcement exist.😉 If not, then why would you go to some place where you aren't familiar and seek conflict or put yourself in danger? Are you some kind of global danger seeker? Like going to the Bronx and shouting "Effin' nwords!!!" 🤔😁
Good video. A lot of times untrained aggressive guys will try to start the fight with either a straight push or grabbing at the arms, shoulders, or collar. I’d suggest a follow up video where you look at those scenarios and how to respond.
I've been working out for 4 years and have recently converted to the carnivore way of eating. At 69 years old, I am in the best shape and health of my adult life. But I've never learned how to fight. It's about time I did. Great video, Tony. Thank you for this! I will watch it several times and practice to achieve muscle memory and hopefully be automatic when or if the time comes.
Thanks Tony. I like simplicity. Put the bully down then walk/run away. What do you think about a kick to the opponents knee? I am talking more of a downward stamping action hitting the top of the knee with the heel/arch of my foot. I did Tae Kwon Do many years ago (I'm 65). I always thought the advantage of a kick to the knee is one can walk away because the 'bully' can no longer walk.
Stamping the knee is very difficult to a moving object. You miss by a little and you might sprain your own ankle instead. You dont need to kick the knee to end a fight. It would be way easier to kick the balls or hit the solar plexus like Tony suggests here.
A kick to the knee that drives the knee back in an unnatural direction can be very effective. You have to quickly place your weight on your other leg to surprise the opponent and deliver a blow that takes temporairly, greatly reduces the effectiveness of one of their legs. As you say, you can even simply walk away.
@@Kmasse8 Good point, but much easier to hit a sweeping kick to the knee area. At least they would be taken off their feet, stunned and surprised, and you'll have a positional advantage or better yet be able to get away or to a weapon of convenience much easier.
Anywhere outside Northeast England a Geordie accent is useful for confusing your attacker. :) Great video, you obviously put heart and soul into helping people when things go badly fast.
Thanks Tony, good advice. I took a boxing class recently, your advice is better, more practical in a confrontation I can't avoid. I prefer to avoid it , walk away. But.... Mental aspect is great: I don't want to fight, bam!
Grateful for the pointers, friend. I agree that AVOIDING a physical confrontation is best. Keeping one's distance from shady-looking situations is best. Personally, my first decision if confronted is, "what will it take to stop this threat?" I carry OC spray, a subcompact 10mm pistol, and a survival pen. However, it is certainly wise to put as many tools in our toolboxes as we can. Stopping an attacker with a pocket cannon can lead to legal complications, even if justifiable.
The amount of battle IQ I’m gaining right now from this video. All stands aside guys really only use these moves unless absolutely necessary don’t be doing it because you love too this is more last resorts only
Good tips! Having trained Muay Thai for many years, you don't have to create distance to throw the hook. You can do a short elbow to the chin instead. Same technique: Exhale while you move your whole torso to the left and let the elbow come flying.
Hey Tony, thanks for the pointers, but as a senior citizen with arthritis, and most likely a prime target nowadays, are these the best defense measures, or are there others for defense for those of us who suffer with this?
John, you're better off carrying some mace. You're going to disable anyone coming at you if you spray them in the eyes with it. 100%. Don't telegraph you have it and get your hand and the mace in your pocket, only when they come in to physically engage you.
Keep going buddy. I’m 70 and I can’t join any schools. They’ll let you in, but young guys don’t want to partner with you. I’m still in shape, but not good enough to keep up. I feel like Im not wanted. Then I leave. You have no idea how that makes me feel. This is life going down hill. Keep going at it,always… no matter what training you need to do.
I think some greatly underestimate a well aimed palm slap or even a palm strike especially if the guy is much bigger than you. You are also less likely to break unconditioned hands striking this way hands are not baseball bats
@@SkywatcherAnomalous89 This is why I say Kick Boxing and Muay Thai should also be worked on with Boxing. Then also preferably for on the off chance of a serious Brawl. I would recommend old School Pugilism/Bare Knuckle Boxing techniques, Dirty Boxing, Old School Clenching and Wrestling techniques etc. When I mixed all these with other Martial Arts I found they cover pretty much all the standard weaknesses of Boxing as a Self Defense Art. That's why I like to call it Old School Pugilism.
Hi Tony, techniques of this kind for us older people are a great help especially if all attempts at avoiding a fight from a younger aggressor do not work.
As an aside: DON'T throw the first punch if you're living in a country where the first punch constitutes you being the aggressor and not the defender. Only do that in self defense when there are no witnesses and cameras. Let's say I have some sad firsthand experience living in Poland and needing to defend myself. Love ya Tony, keep on keepin' on.
great advice. i escaped assault charges bc CCTV showed me retreating backward as the fight started. i caught a bigger, drunk dude coming after me with a counter hook. importantly, i *did not follow up* with more shots when he took a knee, even though i was angry. police told me "proportional defense" was a factor in not considering charges, even though i had gotten in his face, too.
Simple and effective. Combine this with straight forward parkour no flips or tricks and your odds of coming out of it without a scratch increase significantly. Great video and sound advice 👍
I agree with everything you said. Especially of avoiding the fight. Never worth it escalating. Stay calm and you have a clearer head. You touched on this, but have to reiterate how important it is to learn HOW to do these. Even the slap point is good, but people need to learn how to do it and train for it. I am a little over 6 feet. 200 lbs. Mostly beer belly. I am ok with that ;-) But I know how to hold my arm, push off the ground with my foot, turn my hips and body the right way. Your video on how to throw a punch is great for similar information on the punch. Just practice some of these basics for 5 minutes a day exactly how your videos show and you'll improve if you have not had the training. Practice one move for 5 minutes a day and you'll be better than someone who practices 10 moves for 30 minutes a day. Just want to say I think properly practicing these is the key. Not just knowing what to do, but making it so it is instinct. That instinct and muscle memory is what gets you through the stress of an attack.
I love it. Smaller Dude steps back, says "I don't wanna fight, I don't wanna fight!" He then holds out his left hand for the bully to shake it. The bully then reaches out to shake his hand (thus indicating that he doesn't really want to fight either). Smaller Dude then proceeds to fight.
One of my late earliest lessons my sifu told me: never advise your opponent. Be humble at all times. Do whatever you must to protect yourself. I practiced slightly over 6 years, attending the dojo 3-4 times a week, and practicing Gymnastics 3 days a week. I am still alive today because I learned my lessons well.
Hey Tony, great advice! I have a question for you :) What do you think of combinations in a street fight - for example a simple 1,2 or a left hook, straight? Especially if one is already somewhat trained and familiar with technique... I watched your 'self defense' videos and you usually advice to hit with your big hand first. Is that simply because it is more applicable to a novice? Cheers!
I'm no expert, just Army basic training, and a couple of Shotokan Karate classes and I learned one thing. Unless you are experienced with actual fights, then once the adrenaline kicks in, you will only be able to do gross muscle movements, so, the simpler the better. Shotokan Kata are the simplest, and that is for this very reason.
if you have a cupped hand that slaps over someones ear (ie covers it), the pressure is not only incredibly painful, they will either be incredibly dizzy or knocked out. Follow it up with either running or neutralizing.
Great content ! when I was a lot younger (now 68) I started off with judo, then shotokan karate, taekwondo, chi gong, aikido (3 styles) kempo, shukokai karate - and ended up doing shukokai (quite useful) and aikido 15yrs - but TBH I wish that someone had just told me to go Boxing. If its for self defence only, then I reckon BOXING is it & second would be any full-contact karate like shotokan or shukokai - because it gets you used to being knocked about, punched, kicked hard etc. It teaches you what a punch to the face feels like ! You dont want to be learning that for the first time on the street. Some martial arts you're likely to kill someone & you dont want that - and to spend the next 10yrs in jail.
Hi Tony, I love your videos. Recently started boxing mainly for fitness purpose but I started to like the sport. Focusing on technique now and glad that I found your channel. I started to spar but without head shots. What are your thoughts on sparring without head shots? Obviously it's not the same but I would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!
At the very least, your body must know what it feels like to deliver strong punches, as well as know what it feels like getting hit, slammed into, kicked, etc. Heavy sparring with full gear is good but lighter sparring with minimal gear is essential for many reasons too. Spend lots of time doing a wide variety of elbow attacks against pads too, as elbows damage things while preserving your hands. The sparring with light gear lets contacts sting, which is good, as it reinforces the instincts to avoid being hit by using dodging, parrying, and footwork in combination with timing and distance management, etc
Great video, Tony! I've seen a few "helpful" videos but this is the first one that seems doable. Practical advice from an excellent teacher. You've got style, Tony. Thanks a lot for making this one!
Wow, what a bloody brilliant video, I hate confrontation but if needs be I will step up to the plate. Thanks so much, learned a hell of a lot in 6 minutes!! Subbed on the back of this great vid.
I was working on getting my green belt in Shotokan and one time my black belt instructor punched me in the sternum. It hurt for nine months. For me a kick in the nuts will be my first option. It will be completely unforeseen and very very effective methinks. Enjoyed the video. Many many years ago as a young boy my tougher than nails grandfather told me "if you ever get in a fight get in the first punch!"
So amazing! I’m 5’4 120lb woman and this is SO amazing! I agree with you about not seeking confrontation and getting out of the situation if possible. Sometimes that’s not an option and with so many super angry people I. The world today this is very useful. I’ve also worked in law enforcement for 25 years now. Trained in several disciplines and this is by far the best delivery and expedient response I’ve encountered! Cheers to you!
Tony Jeffries You should make a emergency dangerous situation tactics to take someone down quick. Like using your palm to strike the person's chest in the middle of chest in sternum. Or a knife hand strike to the vein on someone's shoulder to make them drop like a sack of potatoes out cold. Or when someone tries to strike with hands block with a counter with forearm near wrist, take your other hand and palm strike their elbow in the opposite direction than what it's supposed to bend. Or in a headlock pull chin down towards your neck, stick your fingers in between their arm and your neck. Either elbow them in their chest, stomp their foot, or grab their pinky finger and twist them. Definitely make sure people understand it's emergency tactics for life threatening situations ONLY 💯.
I been in one street fight in my life. At a bar in the East Village. I had never been in a fight before. I basically mentally committed to taking action, and I did a double palm strike under his chin/throat area, he fell on his ass and was stunned. Fight over. It was a hell of a rush, I have to admit. Time slowed down and all that. Last couple things I have had I diffused, another one I simply walked around him. I think remaining calm is very important. ALot of guys are looking for justification, they are trying to drag you into their energy. If you stay out of it, you are a step ahead.
I would not call myself an accomplished martial artist, however studied on different martisl arts, pulling most effectibe techniques (brutalness a must). When i learned rhe effectiveness of a knockout strike, that was life changing. That was a tight hook, right or left or combo for i was south paw. Rocky Marciano who never lost a fight in 10 year career. Tyson used Rocky technique early in career, while doing so he won EVERY fight!! Well, learning kickboxing i did exactly what my instructor/trainer said not to do. Use my weapons on street. I ended up in the joint, where this ultimately probably saved my life, but #1 weapon, my head is the best to use in all situations as Bruce Lee preached. I seemed to be a target, for punching bag for bullies. The strikes, even though effective knock out techniques, 1 short range , 2nd usually 1 used to create distance, i believe called forward punch, using top 3 knuckles with lockout. Some lunging (superman punch) mine more using Bruce Lee style. Landed correctly, a knockout or fight stopper. These punches inject3d with upmost fury, has left grown men well into 200s tipping 300, crying not even knowing what happened. I have even scared myself, thinking if i punch 1 more time...i might cause irreversible situations. Those punches require 1 thing for maximum results...footing, you must have at least 1 if not both feet firmly planted (as a trained fighter, i would think you would agree). I had to learn a cross between aikido, hapkido, judo etc. Etc. Control the body, cotrol the direction, control the neck, control the head. Almost every fight, without causing hospitalization (trust me, if you stick around waiting for police, this guy go3s to hospital, you are going to jail, no matter he attacked you, you will have to prove innocence) side step is a great anecdote for a charging bull, but just letting past without some sort of grapple, trip or control sets up another charge of which they may pick up your technique and try something differnt. 1 thing is certain, at the point his body is about to pass yours, you will have vantage point. I was wondering if you could bring in an expert to explain this. I am not trained in those martial arts, just studying them i learned a great deal. But using these techniques i have not only handled opponents, supersized, and some trained.i had left them in fear of their life fighting me, never wanting to come across me again. (Always always, psychological induced for letting them know they are inches away from final destination is important) a quiet fighter is important, everyone doesn't need to hear, but whispers in the ear of this is not my choice whether live or die, bit living your life as a paraplegic may be possible if they live is an example of things i have said. He was 6'11" and jujitsu/wrestler and he was an opponent i had to face again, when he discovered it was me, he turned around and practically ran as i said his name and asked why here. I dont like to brag, for this evokes doubt and challenges from people 6''9" he musta been 1 armed a d 1 legged, or 6'7" guy musta been a girl. Or even te 6'5" guy was the person in bed sleeping. Ha, of course none th3se are true. But i don't challenge them they come at me usually full speed, not having time to plant, maybe putting hands up and .any times backing up, which some can knock out, like Chuck Liddell! So i guess my point ultimately, can we see some techniques of handling a charging rhinoceros. Sometimes you have to go to the ground, i dont encourage it , know your surroundings and you must have kneck, head, and back control b4 doing so. Im not talking rear naked chokes, im talikg neck snapping techniques which are NOT competitive moves, bit possible life saving. And have to say. If get a big guy to ground, whether with strike, trip, throw. I am not just going to ground, i am going to make sure you dont get up. Kick knee caps loose, rib, solor plexus, liver, and head, back, depends if trying to mug me or hurt family neck strikes( yeah, on ground. But there's a reason why they don't fight me 2×
I've only ever had 1 fight in my adult life. Most people back off because I'm a big guy 6'8" 280lbs, but there is always that one dude. I didn't end it any of these ways. I started the same way though. Foot back into a side stance. He swung, I leaned back so he missed and side stepped a bit, then I sprung back off my back foot and planted my knee right into his rib cage from the side. He went down holding his side and crying like baby. I looked back and there was blood on his lips. Found out later that that the angle I hit him at was unfortunate. I had broken one of his lower ribs on that side, a floating rib and rupturing something inside related to his diaphram, which is why blood was coming out of his mouth. I still feel bad all these years later. I really hurt him. After that I could hear my dad's voice in my head, "Tall boy (that was his nickname for me), you have to be careful. You don't know your own strength". He was always worried I'd hurt someone, even in self defense. I'm trained, but I loathe fighting. I don't like hurting people.
im gonna sound extremely nerdy right now but I got into boxing thanks to 3 things. My dad who boxed in the army, Rocky (just a great film) and the big one for me was an anime called "Hajime no Ippo" which was about a young lad who was bullied and not very well liked who becomes a boxer. Problem was I know very little and I have health issues so its not the easiest but your videos have been a great help and excellent source of inspiration. You explain things perfectly and show it too. cant wait to learn more!
How to win fight is not get into one, but this technique makes you the aggressor. I keep my peace constantly throughout. I've never been in a physical fight.
I grew up working class poor in the North, real poor in a really rough area. But we had a community that looked out for each other. I got bullied a lot but learned a lot and it eventually just stopped. I was never a fighter, more a geek but I know how to defend myself I just hope I never have to again. But there was always a community, no one a victim alone. However now when I go back to where I was raised, those areas I see no community. I see no community anywhere anymore to be fair. I fear a fight is coming none of us can avoid.

The punch to the solar plexus Tony, you showed us that.
Putting your ego aside and walking away from a potential physical confrontation is the best thing to do, but learning to fight when the time comes and when it's needed is equally important.

I was the smallest kid in my year at school and I'm still a massive introvert to the point I hate even looking my best mates in the eye, but I have been in the infantry for the last 16 years and had the opportunity to do some army boxing. Having the confidence that you can protect yourself gives you the opportunity to be a much better person. keep up the good work, this could really help people struggling to understand their capabilities.
hey, i'm looking to enlist in the national guard as infantry, is that a good MOS or do you recommend another ?

Boxing is perfect for self defense. All fights usually start standing up and throwing punches (boxing). Boxing teaches head movement, foot work, how to throw punches/combos, how to take a punch, and the fitness aspect to it. Maybe a little wrestling or jiu jitsu mixed as well.

5th Way (from a karate person) - leg sweep.. Saved me a few times

My Ju Jitsu sensei taught the open palm slap. No shame in using it to save yourself. A shot to the ear is very disorientating
Huh? I would think your Jitz instructor would go for the single or double leg takedown . This slapping thing for me makes no sense at all . Think of all the knockouts you’ve seen ? How many were were put to bed with a bitch slap ?

That’s insane.

@@tannhauser5399 When I speak of legality, it should be self-evident that it is in a context where a functional legal system and law enforcement exist.😉

You have to quickly place your weight on your other leg to surprise the opponent and deliver a blow that takes temporairly, greatly reduces the effectiveness
of one of their legs.

Oc spray etc is banned in UK so this is the best we get to defend ourselves.

I am ok with that ;-)
But I know how to hold my arm, push off the ground with my foot, turn my hips and body the right way.
Put ur ago aside and be humble so you don't get into a fight. This video is educative and intriguing ❤❤❤❤❤
The problem is now the Bully is watching this💀💀💀
Doesn't matter, bullies tend to lack confidence and more often than not can't fight anyway.
In karate we learn to do a palm strike which is basically what you taught here. It may seem silly but it works
I love it. Smaller Dude steps back, says "I don't wanna fight, I don't wanna fight!" He then holds out his left hand for the bully to shake it. The bully then reaches out to shake his hand (thus indicating that he doesn't really want to fight either). Smaller Dude then proceeds to fight.
Hé wants To give you a hand and Then you slap HIM

Shotokan Kata are the simplest, and that is for this very reason.
hey tony, great video, high energy, practical and easy to learn and good legal considerations for the fight after the fight.subscribed

when I was a lot younger (now 68) I started off with judo, then shotokan karate, taekwondo, chi gong, aikido (3 styles) kempo, shukokai karate - and ended up doing shukokai (quite useful) and aikido 15yrs - but TBH I wish that someone had just told me to go Boxing. If its for self defence only, then I reckon BOXING is it & second would be any full-contact karate like shotokan or shukokai - because it gets you used to being knocked about, punched, kicked hard etc. It teaches you what a punch to the face feels like !
You dont want to be learning that for the first time on the street.

Muay Thai is better.
Pure brilliance Sir! Thank you for sharing your pugilistic knowledge.👊👍

3:46 lol, I’m glad you clarified I won’t have a glove on the street 😂
Good video coach! I can't wait to not try them! 😆
Nooooooo don’t do it ha
1:58 .. i don't think he wants to shake your hand ..😬
We all know that mate 😂
0:08 🤣🤣
0:36 tony ? Did we catch you lacking
Haha what do you mean lacking?
Thanks, I'm 63 & this is exactly what I need.
Who gave bro the pass💀
XDDD
I did
I was working on getting my green belt in Shotokan and one time my black belt instructor punched me in the sternum. It hurt for nine months. For me a kick in the nuts will be my first option. It will be completely unforeseen and very very effective methinks. Enjoyed the video. Many many years ago as a young boy my tougher than nails grandfather told me "if you ever get in a fight get in the first punch!"
How to win a fight? Avoid the fight!
Not all time 😅❤
That's lame 🤣
When it comes to your ego you can't control if someone tells bad about parents can you control
Unless they come to your house unannounced and you have to learn to defend yourself because we live in a crazy world
Weeeak😂
And I've watched the boss to punch 👊 so if we twist the hips turn the cost at the end it will be a strong punch ??
I can say that the palm slap is highly effective
People underestimate things like palm slaps, hammering with the fist and smacking them upside the face with the heel of the hand.
But there's a reason why they don't fight me 2×
I forgot to mention, i have floated between 125-185lbs, never being able to stretch my height 5'8"
I've never been in a physical fight.
fight not needed anymore THIS IS THE MOMENT I START THE FIGHT... omg...
No time to Walk away, I will stand and defend myself using these tricks 💪💪
I grew up working class poor in the North, real poor in a really rough area. But we had a community that looked out for each other. I got bullied a lot but learned a lot and it eventually just stopped. I was never a fighter, more a geek but I know how to defend myself I just hope I never have to again. But there was always a community, no one a victim alone.
However now when I go back to where I was raised, those areas I see no community. I see no community anywhere anymore to be fair. I fear a fight is coming none of us can avoid.
How do you learn how to take a punch? First to strike has it's advantages. What come afterwards is when it gets complicated. Awesome tips , Tony!
