Thank you for detailing the importance of seating arrangements. A faux pas can ruin your ascent. My husband and I hosted a dinner years ago in a private room at Cafe Milano in Georgetown, DC. The woman who helped us with the guest list made the error of failing to put me at the opposite head of table from my,then, fiancé and placed herself there instead. Though my dinner companion, Mrs Fulbright, was delightful, I never recovered from this slight and her usurping my position as hostess. A few more errors on her part and she lost her role in our lives as did her very prestigious employer lose my husband as a potential multimillion dollar a year law client. Foolish girl.
I find this fascinating and at the same time I feel relieved that I am so fucking broke, I will never have to deal with this level of horse shit. This has given me a new level of respect for the newly rich brashness. Now I get why they show off unashamed. It sure beats spending years upon years learning the subtle nuances of how to graciously show that you are from old money while constantly paying respect to those coming from yet older and greater wealth. Perhaps it’s more correct to say that the established classes being referred to in this video as old money, have no desire to obtain the admiration of the less established classes, particularly those who flaunt their wealth. Instead of tattoos impressing these people. It revolts them. Generally speaking they abhor most contemporary music and prefer the ballet and the opera and classical music. Their speech has a pleasing upbeat tone to it and a complete absence of those dreadful profanities from the gutter. And as newly established classes that have some wealth are not interested in what some primitive tribe from the Amazon thinks of them, neither do the old established classes want or need the approval of the up and comers.
