How to Fix Dips in King or Queen Simmons Pillow Top Mattress DIY Style

- diymattress.net shows how to fix the dips in your King or Queen size Simmons pillow top mattress by taking it apart and removing the bad foam and replacing it with latex foam. Works on all sizes Simmons mattresses.
They should make beds with zippers around them
They do. If you buy one that is actually high quality.
Note that expensive&name brand =/= high quality.
Verlo has zippers
Verlo does
Additional Tips: This is a great video on how to tear apart a Simmons mattress but it lacks mainly in one area, how to reassemble efficiently. This video shows a complete removal of the pillow top with not much chance of reusing it. I reused mine. I started to tear my edge banding off between the pillow top and the side of the frame, but instead of just ripping off the pillow top, I recommend the following tweaks:
I used a seam ripper (Amazon $10 or less) to remove the stitching between the mattress topper and the outside material of the frame.
I then used the seam ripper to separate the very thin white material connecting the side frame and underside edge of the pillow top. (This separates the pillow top from the frame edge completely)
***Very Important: I removed the banding and stitches on 3 sides only, and stopped about 6 inches from the last intact banding edge - This is probably the MOST IMPORTANT part because this way you can reuse the pillow top and improve your overall comfort. I removed the old foam which was bound to the frame with wire rings and installed a Dunlop latex topper. I tucked the topper into the pocket between the frame and the intact edge of the pillow top (Because I left 6" on each side for stuffing it back in). Then I pulled the pillow top back over the latex topper and stretched it tightly so it was covering the latex topper completely.
Why did I do it like this? I tried the Latex topper with just a sheet over it and did not like the way it felt for sleeping. Since my pillow top was in good condition, just the foam inside was compacted, I wanted to place the latex topper directly on top of the pocket coils, then have the pillow top over top of the latex. The results were way better than sleeping directly on the latex. It has firmness with the ability to support my body for side sleeping. Alternatively, you could buy a new mattress cover with a bamboo topper but I wanted to try it without spending more money on a new cover. My method saves you on replacing a good pillow top

Thank you for the nice comment.
Hi Ken, I also rarely comment however I’ve just recently discovered your educational DIY videos and I am ready to cut open our mattress!
Thank you!

ummm i was actually waiting to see how you were going to stitch it back up....
Elle scooter just stitch it back
@@TiTiTiTiT I'm pretty sure I'm not wrestling a mattress into a bag and trying to zip it up... positive I wouldn't do it more than once
Thanks for this video. It's difficult to accept that some vendors deliberately reduce the quality of their product to make short term profits, but I can't fix that. What I can fix is the mattress and the video gave rise to a low cost solution. We removed the cover over the pillow top mattress. Sure enough, it's nothing more than foam over a box spring. The box spring is just as firm on either side so we could simply reverse the mattress as is, add foam to the top, and encase it in a $40 cover from Amazon. We decided to remove the foam pads and using a very sharp razor, cut it horizontally down the middle. The sag was at the middle so we reversed the two pieces placing the former sag at the head of the bed and the foot of the bed. Using a tube of construction adhesive, we affixed the two sections of foam together making one large piece again. We allowed the adhesive to dry and then reinserted the repaired foam on top of the box spring and covered it with the original cover. Next, we purchased a slip cover that had a zipper from Amazon for $40 and we were done. Instead of tossing a reusable mattress into the landfill, we fixed it for the cost of a tube of adhesive and an additional cover. I'm really tired of getting ripped off.
I watched all of Ken's videos because our 3 yr old Beautyrest Recharge mattress was sagging. With his expert guidance, he worked me thru the process of looking inside to see the "inner mystery" of my 1300 dollar bed. SHOCKED, does not adequately sum up my emotion. It starts at the base of the bed with a good coil foundation,,,, no problem. Beautyrest touts the edge support of the bed and I found a piece of soft foam around the coils ( a little soft, but not too bad).
Then came the actual foam on top of the coils. ( here is where the shock began to happen)
1st layer on top of coils is a piece of 2 inch foam. ( quite soft)
2nd layer on top of coils is a 3/16 inch of foam with blue gel beads infused in just plain old foam. ( this was touted as the gel layer). Pardon my laughing at this point......
3rd layer on top of coils is another piece of 2 inch foam. (quite soft)
Then begins the pillow top,,,,, another piece of soft foam.
That's it.
So I'm ripping off everything from coils up and replacing it with latex and a new bed encasement.
Thanks Ken for your help.
Will keep you posted when my new bed supplies come in
Your are very welcome.
Where did you get the latex/new bed encasement?
Did it work? I have been thinking of taking this route
Were you happy with the result?
Would like to know the outcome.
Great Video! We were wondering recently while researching new latex/pocketed coil mattresses if this could be done. Thanks for all the information! You're literally "exposing" the crappy, dishonest mattress industry. Liked and subbed. :)
This is the best video that I have ever seen to give me some help with my crappy mattress that I had purchased. I have since bought one king size 3" topper for our bed and a 3" topper for our queen size in our guest room. It has helped resolve my back issues, no more shots, pain, discomfort. Thank you Ken, I tell people about you all the time.
Thank you for the referrals!
This was very helpful!! I'm hopeful now that I won't have to be one more person throwing out a mattress contributing to so much waste in our landfills.
Dude u showed us how to take it apart but how would you sow that back together??
maple leaf buy a zip up bed encasement
That's a common misconception. It says do not remove under penalty of law EXCEPT BY THE CONSUMER (YOU) AFTER U BOUGHT IT.
What do think about putting a thin plywood sheet or something on the coil springs before laying down latex on top? Would that work? I’m looking to get a firm mattress out of this DIY.
Did that work for you?
Amazing! Just finished doing this with my mattress...kept the top cover and put on top of a separate, good quality memory foam top. I wont be rolling off the side all night. Thank u!
You are very welcome
If I’m going to rebuild my mattress that is 13 years old can I save the latex core? How do I know if the core is still usable?
Over 22K views is a very bad sign. I just bought Simmons Beautyrest Kenosha Place III Extra Firm from US-mattress - and it started to have dents after the third night!!! I weigh 115lbs by the way... I'm definitely not going to bother replacing it through the 120 trial program, and definitely not even going to try to return it through warranty as it seems to be impossible. Will do the surgery and put some good latex on top. What a joke these Simmons mattresses are.
I'm in the same boat here but with a Spring Air. I bought it from US-mattress and haven't even been able to sleep on it because the off-gassing of the foam is so strong. It makes me nauseous and my head pound, so it's been sitting in my room for four weeks!!! FOUR. with no difference, while I've been sleeping in the living room. I too think the 120 trial program just sounds like a nuisance so mattress surgery it is.
So much for Spring Air! My mattress now has a nice, body-size indentation smack in the middle where I sleep. I'm back to trying to sleep closer to the sides, just like on the old mattress I replaced. Great investment.
We bought “the mattress” for 7K and now i have to sleep on un even mattress so frustrating
@@hazel6472 Did you modify your mattress with a latex topper? How do you like it? Thanks!
How do you put the pillow top pad back on? I am guessing hand sewing it pack on.
Where do you get the latex toppers from in Canada?
Very helpful!
Wait a minute you don't put back the cover you removed?
or shove a bunch of cardboard under the middle of the bed where the dead springs are...😄
I would rather have the dips than rip the mattress apart...
Id love to see what you do about sewing it back up. Or do you leave it as is?
That's why we sell zippered mattress covers, to replace the old one and give you access to the layers in case you need to change anything in the future.
Thank you! and if you hate the 'memory foam' - i do - a cotton/poly topper?
I have exactly the same mattress!
2:44 “heh heh”
This gives me hope! I bought a $3k mattress from BeautyRest Black because my old was giving me back pain. The salesman convinced me this was my answer. After a month there are permanent dips where I sleep and I've run out of ways to rotate it. The warranty requires a 1,5 inch dip and I'm at an inch or so. That's regular wear according to them. This would be an awesome answer if it would work does your product bounce back after I leave the bed? Where are you located? I'm in Phoenix.
Ok but don’t you have to re sew the first top you took off?
We did this tonight. Saved us so much money! Thank you!
So this just makes me wonder if Beautyrest mattresses are all crap like this, because I have a Beautyrest and it's a mountain in the middle and valleys all around. I just can't make myself sleep directly in the middle of the bed, I've only had this mattress since 2020 and it started doing this months into getting it smh.
Hi bros, crucial questions. ¿Are the shape, simetry of springs( pillow top side) the same than the bottom (non pillow top side) ? I mean, is the spring bed (spring frame) usable upside down the same way with a mattress like you sell or it's different and not recommended to use that way? .
And ¿what would be the equivalent to this latex mattress in kg/m3 on a foam mattress? Would be high density (30kg/m3) medium, or soft(
how do u not have more subscribers? I've watch ed so many of your videos! I have a double sided pillow top matrrss that I've had for Years & I can't tell if it's my frame, boxspring or mattress sagging? There is also really heavy weight at night but its very frustrating! I have one other mattress that looks like a big piece of that latex but it's not thick enough just for a mattress ! ohhh the thought of ripping my mattress, not sure what to do! thanks for all your help as well! your great!
Thanks for support. We'll be taking apart some of the bed in a box brands in the near future and exposing the garbage inside most of those as well
Ken Hightower Awesome! Can't wait!
can you just flip the mattress and put a layer on top?
If it's a no flip mattress then yes. You should find a firm base foam or spring on the bottom but no padding. Add a topper and it will help but might still have some small impressions but way better than before
That is what I have done..flip the sagging pillow top & put a 3" topper on the backside....works fine.I also have a thick mattress pad covering the topper.
Glad you got that worked out at least for now.
I know this video is older, but wanted you to know you are asking 30 to 40 % morthan you can buy these toppers and latex cores on Amazon. just wanted you to know.. thank you for sharing knowledge on pllw top mattress . who would of guessed
I'm buying a latex topper. I was going to try just putting it on top of the mattress but if that doesn't fix my dip problem I think I might try this!!
Did you try it Verna? How do you like it?
How would you put the very top layer back on? By sewing because I didn’t see a zipper on this
These videos are great Ken - very interesting. & inspiring from a DIY perspective. Thank you!
Thank you, wish I didn't have to make them but that's the state of the mattress industry today
What if it's an aireloom bed with the Tufts, I assume they are metal rods going through the mattress. Can this type repair still be done on tufted beds?
Hi Ken, i have a double sided bed, is it ok if i take both sides off, just change one side with latex? So the other side i don't fill anything, or if its a double sided, i need to fill both side? Sorry for my bad english, n thank you...
Finally opened up my beautyrest black lydia...it appears the issue is in the quilted top..it has 2 thin layers, the top is foam with an eggcrate type under it. I may just redo the top.
So where is the actual dip? That bed didn't seem to have that problem. Maybe you can get a bed with a massive dip and show us on that instead? I'd like to see where the actual problem comes from. Thank you for the video.
Okay but where do we buy the latex and zippered cover??
Kim Spilker diymattress.net
screw this im buying one of your mattresses instead!
Hi does the latex work the same as the old foam removed, as far as dissipating body heat , or does it cause more heat?
Latex is open cell foam which means it’s the best at dissipating heat
I was doing some pricing and making your own mattress with a kit is expensive but it makes better sense as you can replace the failed parts more easily.
The mattress police are gonna show up 😂
I have purchased 5 very expensive beds in my life. Some $5,000 or $1,600. And within 2 years all of them had dips. This caused the worst back pain. I then purchased a spindle mattress that is 3 layers of latex that opens for you to rearrange....... I still got dips. Mind you I'm 118lbs. So now I sleep at the very edge of my mattress. I'm thinking of purchasing returned/heavily discounted firm twin size mattress every 3 years.
Might want to check your box spring also. If it has dips so will your mattress.
@@KenHightower I always purchase the mattress stores recommend box spring. So I know it's not that.
Interesting. Is the camera on your head because the view was so close to the mattress and there was lots of moving. LOL Still great information but I was getting sea sick, lol. :)
How long does the latex pad last?
Hey Ken, can you refurbish a P5 sleep number bed with the 3" Latex topper and Bamboo cover? If so would love to see that!
As you know Sleep Number uses a zippered cover similar to ours. Where they fail is the same as all the rest, the top layer of foam so YES, replace it with latex and you'll be good to go. You may be able to use the same cover but if not our Bamboo cover is a good replacement.
Going down to the springs, would you recommend 3 or 4 inch latex for firm/ hot sleepers.
Excellent video!!!
Good karma your way brother, cheees
Is there a version of this latex sheet and the zippered cover available in Australia?
I don't know about the cover but latex should be easy to find since it's a major export of Thailand and Sri Lanka along with Indonesia.
@@KenHightower latex is easy to find, but the cover cant be found here...i've emailed a few USA sellers, but not many responses...if anyone knows how to get one here id appreciate it.
@@peterr9685 Do you know someone in the states that can send you one? Or how about Ebay?
good channel
Great information, and i have a personal story about my mattress
What if you are allergic to latex?!
Latex allergies are associated with cold processed latex products like balloons, condoms, gloves, etc. Latex for mattresses is heat processed which destroys the protein that causes the allergies.
@@KenHightower is there an inexpensive way to test this? Is there an inexpensive common source of heat processed latex before I buy a huge one
A latex pillow would be perfect. We have them on our site www.mattresses.net
putt a mattress pad over the top of the mattress cover
Why take the old foam out, why not just put the latex over the old foam? You would not have to take anything apart.
Because the old foam is the major cause of the sagging issue. Putting more foam over it will not take away the sag
That's a dirty mattress i hate dirty mattresses
Ken I'm a big person and my mattress has no more comfort. My sides of the mattress r worn 2 a level that my sheets won't stay around it. The sides r swooshed n. My son wants 2 get a pillow top 2 go over the old worn out mattress. I feel it may not wrk is wut brought me 2 ths sight 2 get some insight. Wut do u suggest. I'm thnkn a total new mattress
Nothing is going to fix that mattress. Anything you put on top will still follow the contour of whatever is below it. I need more info about your weight and sleeping style so email me info@mattresses.net and I can help you further
Ken Hightower a special thanks 4 ur time. I sent an email
hold on let me fix this horribly misleading title.
*How to forever destroy your mattress.
much better.
Good thing most others disagree and find the content quite useful in restoring their mattress to something they can actually sleep on again.
If you going to buy a new mattress anyway because the old One's messed up then what is it going to hurt to cut it open and put a foam in it if you're going to throw it away anyway
You can't harm what's already broken
I was looking for this exact comment!
Great video but at all mm sot 700 for my cal king to be fixed, I can get a brand new one for 799 or 899. Wish it was just a bit cheaper, at 400.00 or less.
