  • Buying a down quilt can be nerve wrecking. There are so many options and they are a significant investment. You need to understand terms like fill power, 10D, 20D, goose down, duck down, footbox, overfill, regular width, wider width, baffles and more! In this video, I explain some of the basics for buying a down quilt.

Hammock Gear = great service. They call you back & give you their time & send what you need. My ridge organizer tore, they sent another, I called & left a message & Tad called right back to answer questions, then sent right away what I needed.

UGQ now offers the option to put a draft collar at the foot box to prevent or fix the hole issue. It works very well and seals the hole completely or allows you to open it up if you are a warm sleeper as I am. I’m a hot sleeper, a 20 deg quilt will let me sleep comfortably down to 0 deg.

If you're buying a quilt with a footbox that goes to your knees, is extra wide, has snaps, & straps. You're literally trading the weight of a zipper, and a small half round section at the top of the bag. If you're also wearing a down balaclava with your quilt. Just buy a sleeping bag.
For hammock campers. Definitely buy an extra wide quilt if you sleep pod style (the best system if you're concerned with weight). The pod system is what I use, and I love it!

Thank you for the great info on quilts! So, so helpful! My wife and I go camping in a hybrid camper ( half real camper, half canvas beds). We have sleeping bags that zipper together that we bought in the early 70’s. It is flannel on the inside and heavier cotton blend outer shell. It keeps us nice and warm, we are 70 yrs. old and don’t plan on backpack camping any longer. We need something to go on top of our “old” sleeping bags to keep us warm in colder temps. Your video helped us decide what to get. Thanks for all you do. Richard from Northern Indiana

    Good information on the quilts.
That music, if you call it that, may be intended for 20 something males, but it is not pleasant for many of us. I had to turn down the “music” and then missed the talking audio.

Very nicely done video. It’s very clear and concise about questions that I had when I started shopping for quilts several years ago. I’ve watched a lot of similar videos in my day and no one explains things like overstuff and baffle height as it relates to temperature ratings. Also, practically no one explains fabric types and denier like you have here. One little, tiny minor criticism, though. Early in the video you mention addressing storage but then never do. Maybe that was just a teaser for a future video. I guess I’m going to have to subscribe to find out !! I am going to share this video in a couple of Facebook groups that I belong to. I think it really cuts through a lot of BS that’s out there. Thank you !!

Great video. I really appreciated it. I also agree with most everything in this video. Only thing you really didn't mentino is lead time and when is a good time to order for the late fall / winter season.

Pricing and lead times change over time so I didn’t add that. Thanks for watching!

Looks good! Thanks! Big Agnes 650 FP smells like Duck around breathing area or when it is cold rain outside, the tent smells like what? ..
    (You guessed it: Duck.)
I did not understand how the garment could keep safe & warm except for ideal conditions of less humidity. The synthetic version of the sleep envelope seemed more reliable.

Alternatively you can buy all the raw materials and make your own quilt or sleeping bag for considerably less money and end up with a very warm and very light alternative. I made my own and ended up with a 550g, zero celcius quilt. Very proud.

Another thought with overstuff is your down stays in place more. You won't have to migrate down to low spots as much.

I don't believe that is true for custom quilts, I think it is for stock and third party sites like Garage Grown Gear.

What do you think of the cheaper down blankets such as the OneTigris as a supplement to a synthetic sleeping bag? I like that it can be worn during the day but I wonder if it's too thin to make much difference when placed on top of a sleeping bag.

Not familiar with that blanket. It’s all about loft. No loft, no insulation.
