Majesty in motion! Big or small, there is something incredibly beautiful about an "iron horse" in motion. No diesel can come anywhere close to the grace of a steam engine! Thanks for this wonderful view of 4014! ❤❤🎉🎉
My great uncle, Merrill Transtrum, was an engineer on 4014 in the '40s. Its crazy to think he once stood in that exact position, blowing the same whistle.
Your Uncle carried many a soldier off to fight WW2. He also brought them back home. Your uncle was invaluable to the Great War effort. God rest his mighty soul.🇺🇸
The pride of Schenectady New York , I was taking an Amtrak out west from Schenectady to see this beautiful beast but got turned back by the rt. 70 rockslide. Maybe next year God willing
Eh im an Ohio native so the closest thing to seeing 4014 steam up I've seen would either be seeing some diesels start up or seeing 765 pass during the independence excursions this year still all neat to experience processes
How in the world is this intricate Technically Engine machine was built? Highly intelligent machine. Awesome and absolutely Beautiful!!!!!! Footnote: The mastermind behind the restoration of "Big Boy" Union Pacific Steam Engine 4014 is Senior Manager, Ed Dickens, engineering technical genius.
Farewell your Majesty as you announce your exit with a deep hallowing bellow from your whistle in clouds of steam and rolls of coal. Pure gold has to take second place, for you are truly precious metal!
You have answered my question, I was trying to work out where the whistle was after watching numerous Big Bi=oy videos.. I had suspected it was contained within the shroud around the exhaust. Here in New Zealand the whistle was attached to the steam dome on top of the boiler. Hi from NZ, Anthony
The engineering and manufacturing is amazing. The technology it took to build such an amazing machine is mind boggling. "Side note" Notice the "Karen" filming on the other side of the tape. Guess she figures she's special. To special to realize steam is hot.
Hey. I’m the person who a few months ago mentioned in a video that I was in Scouts and I was very close to earning Eagle. What I’ve done since then I’ve joined Sea Scouts which I’m loving. I’ve made progress on my Eagle project. I’m doing a planet walk which is a walkable scale model of the solar system. There’ll be pictures of planets along a trail. Each million miles from the sun will equal 1 foot. It’ll be at a place called Prairie Ridge Ecostation in Raleigh, North Carolina. If you’re ever in that area, you should visit and see the planet walk. I’m in the Order of the Arrow. That’s a lot of fun. I’ve earned Brotherhood. Please respond as soon as possible.
Hey. I’m the person who a few months ago mentioned in a video that I was in Scouts and I was very close to earning Eagle I had my Scoutmaster Conference for Eagle last night and it was a success. We’re hoping to get my Eagle paperwork turned in sometime this week. I hope to have my Eagle Board of Review sometime this summer. I’m going to be gone most of the summer because I’m going to go work at camp on Friday. I’ll let you know when I have my Board of Review Please respond as soon as possible
I got some good photos when it came through here, Palestine Texas and then chased it part of the way to Jacksonville Texas getting a few more shots coming around to bend. 👍🏻 It is definitely a monster!

I’m guessing that they had to use the diesel to assist getting movement started…4014 sat there quite a bit with the throttle cracked and nothing happened, then I noticed that the cylinders were at the end of their stroke. Not enough volume in that end of the cylinders for the steam to overcome the resistance.
No they were just blowing off condensation to prevent cylinder water hammer, don't forget the opposite side of the axel is 10 degrees opposite. And prime power stroke. If the locomotive was having trouble starting it would slip like crazy, and they don't like doing that with modern rail.
@@l.a.2646 Locomotive drivers are "quartered", that is 90 deg apart on either side, and remember the front engine as well, so out of 4 cylinders, at least one of them should be in full power stroke.
Steam engines are not like IC engines. Doesn't matter were they are in the stroke they always have the same force as long as there is steam supplied and can expand. The downside of reciprocating steam engines is that if they sit the cylinders cool down and condensate forms which can cause hydrolocking. So they open the cylinder cocks and blow steam through the cylinders to eject the water condensate and warm them up before closing them down some and away she goes.
I ran a 1000hp engine on site, in the plant, for about 5 years. It was truly an awesome experience. The sheer power, of not knowing, that you derailed behind you, and just kept going .
@@volteerwattson435 the locomotive is freight traffic designed most of the time, which means they dont supply any power to the coaches whatsoever. Theres a reason why they use generator car most of the time
How on earth do they allow people so close to the rail track here if this was in the UK you would risk being arrested by British transport police for trespassing network rail have a zero tolerance to being so close to the rail line away from railway stations

Such a majestic beast. That horn gives me goose bumps!

Amazing to hear that you great uncle was in the cab of 4014 in the '40s

Sounds like an honor
Glad it's back up and running once again. Such a great locomotive.
I heard this whistle from my house a few days prior to this when he was entering Houston. I’ll never forget it! So distinct.
I can't get enough of the badass look of this machine,so Gothic and so gorgeous.
It's just got to be so cool in person.
Wow, I live in the area, and didnt know anything about it being in Beaumont, Texas. What a shame. She is awesome
Omg me too
Same!! Hello fellow Locals!! I live in Groves, Tx!! 😁🥰😎🤩
You didn't hear it??? 😳
Beaumont too, didn't even know about it
Me either...I love in Port Neches!
Steam locomotives are awesome because they provide their own practical affects
We saw her right after this, hammer down and pulling hard! So beautiful
The pride of Schenectady New York , I was taking an Amtrak out west from Schenectady to see this beautiful beast but got turned back by the rt. 70 rockslide. Maybe next year God willing
I love how large and rediculus this engine looks. All tha power!
I read somewhere it takes 5 modern locomotives to equal the pulling power of 1 U.P. Big boy! 4014 is a beast!
I couldn't make it to Hearne but I did see it 2 years ago. A true masterpiece.
I drove from a town Northwest of Austin to Hearne XD
Watching her leave with all that steam around her is absolutely majestic. Defiantly something you need to see in person.
Eh im an Ohio native so the closest thing to seeing 4014 steam up I've seen would either be seeing some diesels start up or seeing 765 pass during the independence excursions this year still all neat to experience processes
Thank you for your patience. I felt I was there.
Gorgeous! Gorgeous! Gorgeous! Wish I could see it in person.😕

What an incredible machine!!!
Legendaria, es una reliquia de ya muy lejanas épocas y una obra maestra de la ingeniería, que orgullosos se sentirían hoy sus creadores!
Old school cool 😎 Beautiful machine!!!
Such a beautiful sight... I need to see that beast in person!
Shout out to everyone in Beaumont! I hope y'all have a wonderful Christmas!
I got to see it here in dupo a beautiful thing to see it' history for sure .I'll never forget
This is like having a mechanical skeleton watch... completely obsolete compared to a quartz movement, but damn they are fun to watch.

There are likely more astronauts than people that know how to operate that beast. Where the hell do you get that training?

Great //
you can see why they want everyone to stay 25 ft back
I don’t know..you could get your clothes steamed cleaned (but not pressed). 😉
That, and there was an accident with another steam locomotive, UP 844, back in 2018. It hit a person while it was going 70 mph.
@@Railfan105. yes but that was natural selection. They stood RIGHT ON THE TRACKS, and didn’t even move when a train was coming

Sorry, but boring.
if you arent intrested to trains then why are you here?
Because I have seen better videos about this locomotive?
