Big Boy 4014, Over Donner Pass (Hits Tree) Roseville, California to Sparks, Nevada (Day 9)

  • The Big Boy 4014 has made it over Donner Pass. Due to traffic, I could not get to some shots but here's the ones I got. 4014 has hit a Tree by Auburn, CA. They needed to do some repairs, which caused a big delay. Luckily it didn't take that long and was on the move again around 2 - 3 hours. I had a wonderful time chasing the train and will continue to chase it all the way to Sparks, Nevada. Day 9 is chasing the Big Boy through Roseville, California - Sparks, Nevada. Hopefully I'll get some good shots! Hope you enjoy this video!

I am a retired civil/structural/geotechnical engineer. I have a great deal of respect for the engineers who designed, and the salt of the earth constructors who built those bridges to support the loads imposed by such a locomotive.

MY DAD was a railroader for 40 years. He would have absolutely loved these films of BIG BOY. On his day off, he would still drive up the canyon to watch the power moving. It was his life. He loved it. They had an excursion from EVANSTON TO OGDEN and you could pay to ride it. I wished my brother and I could have bought him a ticket, but it was to expensive. But, he would have been in seventh heaven. Thanks for filming to all that show all how great it is. What a show. That whistle through those trees and mountains is totally awesome.

It is bad that the tree have nearly ruined 4014's July 14th excursion. At least we get to see 4014's stack hoods when she exited the tunnel. Great catch!

How ironic...a tree hit delayed the historic journey = same thing happened in May of 1869 to Leland Stanford's private car/train enroute to Promontory, UT for the golden spike ceremony!
Workers up the hill didn’t notice the flags on one train (signifying another train was following closely) and resumed their work of tree clearing as the train passed.
They rolled a log down the hillside, impacting Standford's unit, he had to switch trains!!
(It's fun to learn this history as a volunteer during the winter, helping maintain the two replica steam engines: Jupiter and 119, out at the Golden Spike monument at Promontory, about an hour NW of Salt Lake. A great visitor center - the engines run every Saturday and of course on May 10th, the commemorative date.

This video and the stills are the best I have seen of the Big Boy's journey through the Feather River Canyon and then back over Donner. Seeing it come out of tunnels makes the decision to use cab forwards on the SP route over Donner a very wise one, since those freight trains were moving much slower than this consist. I have to wonder what some of those people just driving along on I-80 thought as they saw this huge locomotive pass overhead.

Well, not for nothing, but this isn't exactly the cleanest I've seen 4014 run. My guess is they were running a bit richer than normal for the run up the grade, as they needed the extra steaming capacity. Normally they run really, really clean (well, for a steamer).
Diesels if designed right can have basically totally complete combustion, unlike something like this.

Really amazing shots and to see. Of such an iconic beast. I remember model trains of them in my youth were very sought after. The only thing we don't get is the wonderful smells of the coal and steam from this. That is all in our blood from our ancestors experiencing. Nothing like it. Being down here in Adelaide AUS. We have something called the Steam Ranger available to us down south of us. Of an iconic steam train in our region to. Where we can get that authentic experience in full. Thanks for sharing :)
