Gerry i am 73 years old and i can witness the power of steam engines. In 1967 in Louisiana i worked for J.P. Owen Drillling Co. The company had 3 steam driven land drilling rigs. In the late 60's one of them drilled a deep well in what was to become the deepest oil & gas producting wells at 27,000'. They were powerful drilling rigs that made the biggest smoke rings ever seen. I really enjoyed working on them. Not many poeple left that i know of can say that. :)
I'm an old guy now, but used to pace fast trains. It is sometimes a daunting endeavor. Also paced steam fan trips back in the day. Those were exceedingly difficult with all the traffic, and today is even worse. I would be the driver and my buddies would be shooting, I almost never shot while driving, too difficult. It seems as if this fellow is doing it all, in all that traffic, and getting excellent footage!!! Simply amazing, and I thank you personally. My friends and I went out to see Big Boy on it's way back to Cheyenne after it's first trip to Promontory Point. A wonderful experience for sure!
This is an absolute beast! An incredible loco. The power is out of this world. As a Brit who models American Railroads this is one model I would love to have complete with a sound module!! Awesome

Mr. Sharp, I believe Broadway Limited has brought out a big boy in HO that is reported to have DCC and sound. Don't know if they are available in the UK. If you are interested, hold on to your hat, they are pricey. Thankx

One of the things that I noticed in this video is that Big Boy 4014 has a new headlight at the front that contains 2 lamps inside it. This is one incredible steam locomotive.
The last company to produce 32 V 250 Watt bulbs that were used in the original headlight housing is no longer producing them. They’ve become so scarce they’ve opted to just install an original Pyle National headlight conversion plate. It uses a pair of 200 W, 32 V PAR 56 bulbs. Those are still readily available as they are the same ones used in current locomotives.
That's some of the best footage I've seen to date. I had to slow it to .25 speed and watch all that drive linkages and mechanisms while you're so close! Astounding clarity!!!
Big Boy 4014 always seems to draw a crowd wherever he goes. I guess that shouldn’t come as a surprise considering there aren’t many locomotives like him that are still running rather than just sitting idle in a museum.
@@uniontrains.8631 The Challenger 4664 was good for 90 mph. The Challenger was a combination Locomotive. It was good for passenger, and freight service. The 4884s where only used for freight service.
Actually, the Big Boys could run at up to 80 MPH during their regular service days, according to Union Pacific. Obviously that would be on more level track with a "shorter" train though (not a 3-4 mile long one).
@@FanRailer I had heard and read they limited it to 45. We got to pace it down in NE headed to Grand Island a few years ago, all it did was 40-45. I had thought they were permanently limiting it to 45 but also heard UP may let it move faster. This video looks about 45 MPH.
I would like to know when UP will start running excursions with BIG-BOY; where we can all actually ride on the train. Hook up 40 cars and let it pull us from Denver to anywhere in Wyoming and back!!!
It is always a pleasure to see UP 4014 in action & this was the only excursion trip for 2022 ; the traveling scenes of pacing the train on the highway system are impressive while viewing the motion of 4014's driving wheels.

This particular one was restored by Union Pacific in the mid to late '10s and was brought into excursion service in 2019 as part of their celebration of the 150th anniversary of the completion of the America's first Transcontinental Railroad. UP continues to use it for public excursions and at special events.
Well you fellas saying 4014 was restricted to only 40 to 45 back when Ed left Salina,Kansas had found out there was a blizzard in Colorado union Pacific wanted 4014 back in Cheyenne so was told to open her up so he did so even when they payed over in Denver. so next morning Ed turned 4014 loose and highballed home arriving a day earlier than planned.

My wife and I were also in the Challenger dome car on Sunday 12 May 2019 when the Big Boy returned to Cheyenne WY after the Golden Spike ceremony in Ogden Utah. That was the very first excursion with the Big Boy and was sponsored by The Utah Historical Society. The trip was from Ogden Utah to Evanston Wyoming over the same tracks the Big Boys ran on when in service. The trip included breakfast, lunch and a bus ride back to Ogden. We also got a private tour of the train and a presentation by Ed Dickens the day before. For that trip we did not sit in in the dome. Our seats were down stairs and were $3000 each. Dome seats for that trip were $5000. When 4014 did the Southern California tour later that year there was an excursion from Colton Yard CA to Barsto CA. As I remember coach seats for that trip were $750 and dome seats were I think $1200. That trip was sponsored by a Southern California railroad origination.
Yes, the connecting rods are moving pretty fast at whatever the speed is on this run. These are freight engines made for pulling. Drive wheels are 68" compared to the passenger 844's 80". You can also tell the low gearing by how smooth it runs at very low speed.

The engineer normally likes to run it around 45 mph (72kmh) but will open it up to 55 mph (88kmh) in the open like that. At 45 mph, it burns through about 26 gallons of fuel oil (98L) per mile.
Love this titan of a machine. I'm still shocked the whistle 844 has worn for so long is from this exact big boy an no one knew. Has such a roar to it that just fits a big boy, though I will say, I hope they donate 3985 with the whistle that 4014 wore when she was restored. It's a brand new whistle, new old stock. 2019 is probably the first time it ever saw steam.
If they did that, as far as my knowledge of it goes, it would leave them down a serviceable whistle for the 844. The only other whistle I know to be in their possession, which I could be wrong about, is the whistle the 844 used to wear back in the 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s before it became VERY wore out and was replaced with the whistle heard in this video. I could be wrong about that though, so don’t quote me on it.

All just railfan grapevine hearsay though, so a grain of salt is what I shall prescribe alongside this hearsay. Honestly, I’d like to hear the 4014’s 2019 to 2021 whistle on the 844. I personally hope that whistle will make the 844 sound similar to how it did from the 80’s to the early 2000’s because the smooth baritone hum of the 844 in that time period is what I associate with the 844 the most and personally consider to be the 844’s defining sound. In regards to the 3985’s whistle, I’d like to see it eventually make its way over to Rizzoli Locomotive Works to be rebuilt if it ain’t to worn out.

During some of the departures, it is clear that the steam engine is not doing work; i.e. the diesel locomotive is propelling the train. This is revealed by the fact that the Big Boy is not chuffing at all as the train accelerates. Later on they bring the driving cylinders on line. Perhaps this is to reduce the effect of the exhaust in a municipality? Or perhaps to save some fuel?
I live in Cheyenne, and I've heard that whistle blow many times. Including one time when she was not quite up to pressure, and the whistle sound very WET. I watched her get rebuilt.
I've done more than a few "steam train" excursions. Much more often than not, there is a modern diesel somewhere in the train. What percentage of the motive force is electric and what percentage is steam generated? Please tell me that the 4014 is pulling the train on its own and the diesel is there in case of a malfunction.
Diesel locomotive are basically a "dead' weight being pulled by steam locomotive. Diesel locomotive is a safety feature mandated by the US government called the Positive Train Control "PTC" this PTC is being controlled via the console panel inside the 4014 cabin connecting to the diesel locomotive. There is no one inside cabin of the diesel locomotive. In additionally to PTC, Electrical power are being supplied to passenger cabins for lighting and air conditioning as well. The real power in locomotive is steam

She was scheduled to come out here as part of her larger tour that was originally scheduled for this year, but that was cancelled/postponed with the rest of the tour. I'm sure she'll come back sooner rather than later!
Ok I’m here in the Uk and we have steam engines, ours run on coal which has a certain evocative smell, what does the oil burner smell like please, I can remember diesel fuel paddle steamers in the Bristol Channel and their smell?
Hi John, from the UK here. Just returned from visiting the NYMR actually. Yes I have always wondered what oil smoke from a steam engine smells like as you say all ours are coal burning engines.
So UP cancelled the tour to Oregon and cali cause they didn’t want to take up trackage and cause delay with other trains. So instead they decide to go to Denver. Thanks UP for ditching Oregon, California, and Idaho.

I saw the 4014 when it left for restoration, but I haven’t been able to see it running on its own! This is such an engineering marvel! I love it.

The speed limit on this section of track between Cheyenne, and Denver tops out at 60 mph which happens to be the top speed of the 4014.

Opening her up means 55 mph. Big Boys were limited to that speed even when they were in operation because they become unstable at faster speeds.

I believe Ed has stated it really tops out around 70 -75mph. Honestly why would you want to push the running gear that hard if you have no reason to.

Those powerful engines run better at higher speeds. They were built for running at high rpms.

Perhaps this is to reduce the effect of the exhaust in a municipality? Or perhaps to save some fuel?
I noticed that Big Boy was on line while the train was ascending a grade.
it did accelerate itself (the smoke already obvious) and the diesel is not even helping as it isnt emitting exhaust smoke

I live in Cheyenne, and I've heard that whistle blow many times. Including one time when she was not quite up to pressure, and the whistle sound very WET. I watched her get rebuilt.

I would love to see UP keep a diesel road number 4884 to run with the 4014 on excursions like they did in 2014 when they brought it home to Cheyenne.

Can you imagine being able to say "I'm the engineer on the UP 4014"?
I've done more than a few "steam train" excursions. Much more often than not, there is a modern diesel somewhere in the train. What percentage of the motive force is electric and what percentage is steam generated? Please tell me that the 4014 is pulling the train on its own and the diesel is there in case of a malfunction.
Yeah the diesel never does any work it’s just there for brakes

Diesel locomotive are basically a "dead' weight being pulled by steam locomotive. Diesel locomotive is a safety feature mandated by the US government called the Positive Train Control "PTC" this PTC is being controlled via the console panel inside the 4014 cabin connecting to the diesel locomotive. There is no one inside cabin of the diesel locomotive.
In additionally to PTC, Electrical power are being supplied to passenger cabins for lighting and air conditioning as well.
The real power in locomotive is steam

She was scheduled to come out here as part of her larger tour that was originally scheduled for this year, but that was cancelled/postponed with the rest of the tour. I'm sure she'll come back sooner rather than later!

Ok I’m here in the Uk and we have steam engines, ours run on coal which has a certain evocative smell, what does the oil burner smell like please, I can remember diesel fuel paddle steamers in the Bristol Channel and their smell?
Hi John, from the UK here. Just returned from visiting the NYMR actually. Yes I have always wondered what oil smoke from a steam engine smells like as you say all ours are coal burning engines.

So UP cancelled the tour to Oregon and cali cause they didn’t want to take up trackage and cause delay with other trains. So instead they decide to go to Denver. Thanks UP for ditching Oregon, California, and Idaho.
It will tour again when they can. I hope it will happen in 2023.
