I saw a tip in another video and it seems very important. I tried it and it made so much sense and it’s this. Don’t try and exhale all your breadth in the water as this will exhaust you and you don’t do this in normal situations. Try it.. sit down and breath in normally and then force all your breath out. Do this a few times and you will realise how abnormal it is. It’s the same in the water.
Breathing properly is my biggest challenge while swimming and has made me almost give up on mastering freestyle swimming. This video was very clear and motivating --as well as funny🤣 Thank you 🥰
Have you tried a pull buoy? It helped me a great deal to coordinate stroke and breathe. They tend to keep your lower half a bit higher in the water, so you might drink the pool a couple of times as you build arm strength and coordination.
I started swim learning at the age of 36. I learn floating, kicking and arm movement in 3 days. But I am struggling to take breath. I stand up in water after every 15 metre to take breath and then start again. Whenever I open my mouth for breath lot of water enter my mouth and nose. Now hopefully I will master breathing also. Thanks for making this video.
Try this: swim a length of the pool breast stroke, to get into the rhythm of the workout… then switch to front crawl. I’d never done breast stroke before but I tried this and it worked quite well.
If you have panic or it is difficult for you to hold your breath for 2 or 3 strokes, it can be helpful for you to pratice a breathing pattern before starting to swim. Then when your head is underwater you just focus on your preset rhythm. It relaxes and assures you that you actually can hold your breath so much longer. Until winter 2021 I had major panic issues whenever I turned my head underwater and kept choking. This is what helped me the most to overcome my fear. Now I swim 3 times a week and it is really fun.
ikr, i did the same and it worked, there were days in which i was annoyed by the times i had to go to swimming classes but now i enjoy them a lot ! i even go by myself in my free time.
What breathing pattern to practice plsss say ? Today I got literally out of breath and I choked myself worst situation and my trainers were so cruel they told me "it is all drama" 😔
Beginner here, learning to breathe....This is THE BEST video I have watched so far!!! It is easy to understand, simple, quick to the point, easy to remember!!! Thank you so much!
I just started swimming laps again, it’s been about 4-5 years! I had the hardest time breathing, no structure, blowing air out through my mouth and the gasping for air when I turned my head to the side…I totally forgot how to breathe correctly! Thank goodness for your video, I’m going swimming tomorrow, now I remember my training as a kid. Whew!
Joseph, I love your humor! It really helps me to remember what you are teaching. I am a motorcycle and bicycle instructor and that works there as well. My freestyle technique is improving but I'm struggling with breathing in that I feel like I won't get that next breath so I feel a panic. I can snorkel all day with no issues but sustained breathing for multiple laps is not good. I am an avid cyclist so my cardio is good.
Thank you iv been learning to swim at 42 and finally can but need practice with breathing thank you once again. I'm really enjoying myself don't know why od didn't do it sooner. Will re watch this because it will be helpful.
Thanks for the tip. This surely helps when dealing with waves in open water. You are correct on the rotation of the body to help breathe better. Practise and good form helps tremendously.
I learned how to swim using a snorkel. And I have been so scared to try without. But your video has given me the desire to try and to overcome the fear!
Thanks @Swimtopia! I've been swimming my whole life, but the nuances of the breathing technique you explained help. BTW, wherever you are is BEAUTIFUL!
Hi joe i am beginner ...i have spend 4 days still struggling to take breath while swimming. Today watched your video and definitely going to apply your trick from tomorrow onwards.
I always swim with my hand above the water or under the water cuz I’m terrified to try to breathe like that 😂 I’m gonna try to overcome my fear using your tips!
Today me and my coach found out that I’m a natural freestyle swimmer! 🤗 I was struggling learning frog style supposedly the easiest one, so my coach let me try freestyle, and I did it just in one try! 😁🥳 My coach was literally shocked! Now we just need to perfect the technique 😊 Me and my coach believe we are all natural swimmer, at least in one style, so keep trying! 👏
Thank you sir, I search many videos and your videos have basic that I need to practise more about breath and turn shoulder and head in right position. 😊😊
I have the exact same problem with head while doing freestyle, I can’t control neck properly and water came in my mouth. Thanks to you I realized my mistake and will try again in correct form. ❤
Subscribed! I’ve got pool envy🤬 That pool is so beautiful. I appreciate your personality and how you are having fun giving us this lesson. I look forward to learning from you in your unique fun-filled style.😊
I don't even know why I'm binge watching swimming guides, I learned as a kid and can swim perfectly fine. I guess I'm intrigued what makes swimming so difficult for some people. But the Peppa Pig tho..I was almost dying of laugher. I was drinking water and had to laugh so much that I ended up gulping water just like in the video. 😂
1. Trickle breathe through your nose (slow constant exhale) 2. Always turn to your side so your legs don’t sink 3. Open mouth wide suck in as much air as possible.
Thank you I can’t swim n everytime I get into the pool I’d hold on to the concrete of the pool the whole time I’m just afraid of letting go and not be able to float and drown 😭😭 but that’s why people tell me “ you gotta learn to float to know how to swim “ now I know how to hold my breathe above water but I’ll practice these before I let go 🤣❤️
Your channel should be above the average Joe😅 You are an excellent coach, I am taking swimming lessons but all my advancement is due to your channel, I love the way you are funny revealing the mistakes of beginners, it make me remember the right technique when I think about them, Thanks. 🙏
Thank you for the helpful video. After turning to breath, do you close your mouth before entering the water? I am a beginner and am having trouble taking in water in my mouth while breathing in and turning back. I have seen some videos of swimmers not closing they mouth while turning their head back in the water, and it seems quite natural to them, but not for me :(
Practice open your mouth in the water. You will be surprised the water doesn't get into your mouth as there is air inside your mouth that prevents it. So when I turn I will open my mouth and when I put my head back into the water I can either open or close my mouth. Doesn't affect me. You can try practice that
@@Swimtopian I actually practiced that this morning, and had a similar experience and I realized that I struggle probably when I'm taking a breath in, and a part of my mouth is still in the water (and I end up taking some water along with the air as well). Thank you for sharing that valuable insight as well telling me about your exact personal experience.
@Alywn Pereira Practise like how instructor Joe does in the video (standing in shallow water, and pratise the hand, turning of head, and breathing first)
What I do is breath out the remaining air with my mouth as it exits the water, and when you feel that the breath is coming out freely that means your mouth is out of the water, and also you will get our any water that got into your mouth.
I still can’t breathe doing free style (using swim snorkel). I made all the wrong moves trying to breathe without snorkel. I am going to practice the right moves from now in the shallow end as part of the drills.
Hi coach Joe, I love your videos. I've learnt a lot from your videos and have improved my swimming style in the process. Can you please make a video on how to swim for loosing weight. It's really important for me. Thanks.

Good point
Sige po
Sige po
Wouldn't that lead to a buildup of too much CO2 in the lungs though?
It is required to exhale from nose and mouth or only nose

3. Open mouth wide suck in as much air as possible.
