    What a beautiful, warm soul. Articulate, knowledgeable, practical advice. Thank you
    I have cannas for the first time in pots and in my established. All are doing great except for one; which is in a large pot with other plants. After watching your clip, I don’t think it’s Rust but I’m still going to take your advice on thinning out the leaves for better air circulation and changing the way I overhead water; which I assumed they liked due to their tropical nature. 🙂

      Hi Joyce thanks for sharing and for the encouragement. Yes allow circulation and allow the upcoming shoots to get sun. Also as the leaves are large and water rolls off the leaves, often the water does not land on the roots. Enjoy your Cannas

    I didn’t know any better and purchased a canna with rust from the nursery. It still produces new foliage quite often but now I know why my leaves look the way they do. This video was very informative. New subbie! 😁

    So happy I found your lovely channel. Thank you for all of your Canna info… I have my first two in pots, one yellow and one scarlet bronze.. though it had rust, but no red spores or colour showing. So fingers crossed. Also is it possible to bring them inside for the winter? 🪷

    • @redsoilgardener
      @redsoilgardener  Рік тому

      Enjoy your Cannas and fingers crossed. Yes, over winter, you can leave them in the pots. You will need to cut back the foliage to soil level before bring the canna pots indoors. During winter you stop watering and keep them in a dry and cool location, like basement or where the temperature does not fall lower than 5 degrees Celsius.

    I loved your video, here in the south of Brazil we have a lot of rain, more than usual and my cannas were also rusty, I had to cut them 😞

      Hi Angela so sorry to hear about your Cannas. Unfortunately, its the dampness that brings the rust. With my Cannas, I really tried to rescue them and eventually had to go the hard way and used a fungicide. By the way, greetings from Kenya, Africa to Brazil.

    Thank you for your video. I’m pulling all of my cannas out because they have so much rust.
    Can I save the rhizomes and replant?

    • @redsoilgardener
      @redsoilgardener  11 місяців тому

      Hi dont pull them out unless the crown and rhizome is infected. Just remove the infected leaves.
      Rust is caused by humidity and its usually when we water the plant leaves instead of watering the soil. So the water stays on the leaves and the fungus thrives. It could help to cut some of the foiliage at the base so that you get air circulation. This also helps the new shoot to sprout up.
      You may aslo get a fungicide from your garden center. I usually use Neem but it requires to consistantly spray at least every two weeks until the Rust is irradicated.

    Great video,,on my canna not sure what’s happening with my cannas they seem to split so not sure what to do with it

    • @redsoilgardener
      @redsoilgardener  2 роки тому

      What happens with Canna rust is when these blisters join the leaves do split., as in the episode.
      Another cause of leaves splitting is the Canna leaf roller caterpillar it makes linear holes on the leaf and if the holes connect the leaves split. I advice tale a sample of the leaf to your garden center and get them to advice

    What is the spray you used for cannas? You mentioned it in the video but did not give a name. My cannas are looking horrible and im getting ready to pull because i cant fix

    • @redsoilgardener
      @redsoilgardener  Рік тому +1

      I normally use Neem oil, as it is an anti fungal, anti bacterial etc. With the Canna Rust, which is a fungal problem, it helps kill the spores before it enters the plant tissue.
      Do try to ask your garden center if they have an already mixed Neem Spray. In case they only have the active ingredient, mix 1tsp of Neem oil to 1/3 tsp of insecticidal liquid soap to 1 ltr of lukewarm water( the liquid soap helps emulsify the Neem oil). Spray every two weeks on leaves and also the soil until you have eradicated the problem.
      I would also cut off the infected leaves and remove the rhizomes that are infected. However, if its beyond repair, remove the plants and spray the rhizomes and start over again.
      Sorry for your Cannas but there is hope.

    My canna lilies tips are getting brown, they look dry. I do get flowers but the leaves look bad

    • @redsoilgardener
      @redsoilgardener  8 місяців тому

      Sorry to hear that. Check if there are orange powdery spores at the back of the leaves. It could be a fungal problem. Canna Rust.
      If it is a fungal problem prune off the infected leaves so that the infestation does not spread. Let me know if that is the problem, if its not the problem, we can then look at other factors.

    I don't really want to use fungicides so if neem oil doesn't work I'll chop the plant. Can you burn the leaves? Or could it survive some how?
    If the plant is infected how badly is the bulb affected?

    • @redsoilgardener
      @redsoilgardener  Рік тому

      Hi, we love our Cannas please don't give up. With Neem oil you need to repeat the application regularly every two weeks, until you notice that the spores are eradicated. As seen my situation was dire. If yours are the same cut down the infected Cannas down to base and then ensure that you spray the remaining leaves and plants.
      The infected leaves yes you can burn them once you have removed them. As the spores travel through the air and are attracted to humidity.
      Once the spores travel to the rhizome they do rot the rhizome, hence you loose the plant.
      What I recommend is remove foliage underneath so that there is circulation and remove infected leaves and cut down infected plant because they will grow back.

      Hello my canna leaves have rust. It is in a huge pot. I'm in South Florida USA, no cold weather. If I cut the plant down to the ground will that remedy this? Or do the spores live in the soil? I think the rhizomes are ok as they keep sending up new leaves.Thanks!

    How much neem oil in 1 litre of water?

    • @redsoilgardener
      @redsoilgardener  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Veena try one litre of warm water + 2.5 ml liquid dish soap +5ml neem. Shake it well and apply every to 2 weeks. But if the Rust infestation does not improve go for a fungicide. And don't forget start with the underside also spray the stem.
