But this year I plan to plant canna lilies at home in the flower garden. Thank you for such an instructive story. Now I know where to start. Good luck to you and the growth of your plants.
A friend gave me my first canna lilly rhisomes(3) this year. They are now 3 feet tall and blooming beautiful red flowers. (Must be the dwarf variety). It was so much fun watching them grow so FAST! Wow all the way from Kenya, that's so amazing... I have the green stripe one the flowers bloomed once and then wilted away... we r having a severe drought here in far northern California and extreme heat ,my garden is barely hanging on.
Hi Barbara Sorry to hear about the wilting. Cannas love water, keep watering the plant. Make sure you water the soil as sometime sprinklers don't actually get the water in the ground, as you get a runoff from the leaves. Take a hose and soak the soil directly next to the canna. I will have to try pest recipe with onion, I've made others with red pepper, oil etc with some success. Thanks for sharing recipe, many pests don't like plants in onion family.
Thanks for sharing, I actually started to Zap my mealy etc with a mixture of pepper and garlic mixed with soapy water and it works. Thought I should also introduce this method in one of my episode. Thanks again, and thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing. Yes it does get really cold in winter. Just seen the news with snow etc this time of the year. I think the Canna must be so happy in the green house.
So beautiful! I have the variegated maroon ones I live in Alabama in the States. I have a question about the eye. Should the eye be planted above the soil?
That red striped one is called Tropicana or Durban in some places. It makes a vivid orange flower. The other green and yellow striped one is called Bengal Tiger here in the US and it too makes a very similar bright orange flower.
the green and yellow striped one, you call a Bengal Tiger, I believe is also known as a Pretoria. I planted some for the first time this year and I am very excited to see the out come. they add a much needed color variation to my garden.
What a lovely video. I didn’t know there were 30 kinds of Canna Lillies. I love Canna Lillies. The last Canna you introduced has maroon and green leaves but you said you were curious to see what color flowers it produced and I’d love to know the color of its flowers, also. I’ve never seen the one with maroon and green leaves at any of the nearby garden centers and I live in Northern California.
One of the best video on Canna lily I have seen. Very articulate. I just bought 20 bulbs and didn't know what to do and now I do. How well do they do in a pot? Thank you!!!
They should do well in a pot. I would plant a cluster together to make it more dramatic. Just remember it grows in clumps so get a big pot as the rhizome will continue to have babies.
I have grown my dwarf canna in a pot for three years. This year it threw a stalk with four flower clusters. I bring the pot indoors for the winter and it blooms again between Christmas and the end of January.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I didnt know if I had to crack the seeds open ( like morning glories soaking overnight) so I cracked some and planted some. This was great to watch and I'll be propagating my own cannas for next year. They are so beautiful. Again, thank you!🧡🧡🌱🌱😊👍
Thanks for a great video. I bought my first canna 6 months ago and placed it in a pot, in the shade by my frog pond, then pretty much forgot about it. I removed the pot a week ago and discovered it had a heap of shoots appearing! I had no idea it would do that. So I began hunting for videos to learn more, and of all the ones ai found yours is definitely the most informative! Question.. if I plant it out and leave it in place in the garden, will it continue to multiply, or is it necessary to lift and divide each season? Thank you and I look forward to seeing more of your happy place!
Hi thanks for sharing.Yes you can divide it and replant it. Cannas have Rhizomes which are underground stems which is where the shoots pop out. For as long as you water the plant( they are thirsty plants) they will producing more shoots. It is also advisable to lift and divide Cannas as the roots do spread fast and can get congested during the growing season. I would suggest you enjoy your lovey Cannas for the time being.
Thanks a lot for this very informative video. I really liked the propagation part even if you did not show an update of the propagated Cannas because you instead mentioned their growth behavior of always wanting to be in clumps, so dividing should induce them to produce new shoots. It would really be great if you have an update video of the ones you divided here. How long does it take for a newly divided plant to produce new shoots? I hope this method will also work with other plants related to Cannas like Heliconias and Alpinias.
Thanks for the suggestion, I will follow up on that. With the Canna lily it took roughly 2 months to see the sprout and from there the plant took off. Rhizomes are great and the same method of division can be used for Heliconias and Alpinias. I have noted and will do an episode on the above. Thanks so much
@@redsoilgardener So excited for an update on your mystery cannas. Directly following this wonderful video, I subscribed and went on a search for an update video. I too am very interested in seeing the color of your mystery cannas. Blessings! 🙏🏼🌷
Thank you for this wonderful knowledge sharing, it will save me from repurchasing next year. Cannas are my absolute favs for duping a tropical local in the Canadian prairies 🌈PS: those Canna “Tropical “, the ones with the striped leaves, in a 1 gallon pot costs $55 in Canada! So propagating is economical even though unlawful because of the growers proprietary stamp 🙄
beautiful cannas and garden! Can canna rhizomes be cut in the spring/early summer to be divided if they are still only 1 foot tall or will this effect their growth/flowering throughout the summer? thank you!
I trully enjoy watching your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I recently planted some cannas for the first time. Oh boy! What a challenge it's been. Not sure if its a soil problem or too much sun or not enough water...lol. But I'll keep trying. Do you have a video on pruning cannas?😘
Hi Canna lilies need a well drained soil and full sun. When watering the canna make sure you water the roots and not from above. The leaves are a bit waxy so the water just slides off and therefore you lose the water. Have a look at our episode on "How to increase your blooms and storing the Canna lily during the winter months" . I covered pruning of flowers and foliage. Thank you so much for following our channel.
The new one is African Sunset, I think. Mine has not yet bloomed and it is July 10th in Florida zone 9a. It has grown great with multiple babies and large leaves, but I don't know why it has not flowered yet. I'm going to begin liquid fertilizer and see if I can help it along, but it is a beautiful species.
My in-laws have the beautiful red ones on the side of the house and they grow 10 feet tall at least. I brought some of the seeds and roots home and planted them several years ago. They have multiplied so much that I started transplanting some all over the property to hide the problem areas. I trim them as they die off and that's it. They reach 8 feet and are the easiest plant I've ever had.
Hi Mandy, we love Cannas as they shower us with colours, which is so uplifting. Well done, I love the idea of using them in problem areas. Thank you so much for sharing.
@@Tashvaldez not that I've ever known about. They have lots of seed pods at the top when it blooms. One single stalk may have 20 seeds. They look like little round black balls. I often dig down to the roots and chop off a few of the tubes/shoots, I'm not sure if that's the correct term or not but I just take the pieces and put them in the ground wherever I want to grow them.
@@redsoilgardener mine bloom red and yellow flowers but I've seen other colors while driving and I always consider knocking on their door and asking if I can have a piece of theirs but I always chicken out. 🐔 😊
Maria thanks hope your Cannas doing well. Sorry for the late response. I realised that that the trees in "My Happy Place " we not giving enough sun for the Cannas so decided to prune the trees and most of my Cannas got crushed...thats the reason for late response.. sorry for that... eventually found the beautiful red Canna and have revived it, will be post it on instagram and we can follow the growth and eventually the colour of the bloom.
don't know where you live, but we live in NE Georgia in the U.S. and I am learning how to scarify my seeds and want to grow my yellow Canna Lilies in pots but how hardy are they if you put in the ground? do they Winter over in mountainous areas... We are in zone 7a... What kind of soil do they prefer if you plant them in a pot or outside? Thank you. Your video is wonderful
Hi Joanne sorry for late response. With the canna seeds I would sow the seeds indoors around this time of the year. Ask at the garden center if they have a germination medium for propagation. I would not risk planting the seeds outdoors as the weather at the moment seems quite erratic and as this is your first venture we want a success story. With overwinter preparations in zone 7 - 10 they can be left outside in the ground over winter. But this should only be done in areas where the ground does not freeze. If the rhizome freezes it will get damaged and you may lose your plant. The alternative is to store the Canna and their dug up rhizomes in the basement etc. When planting Cannas always remember the soil has to be well draining. This applies for indoor and outdoor. The reason being that the rhizome is susceptible to root rot. I hope i have answered your questions. Good Luck with your lovely Cannas
Suzie try this : 4 cloves of garlic and large onion plus 2 teaspoons of chilli. Blend it in a blender. Once blended add two large coffee cups of water, plus a teaspoon of liquid soap and mix. Leave it overnight. if you find it too concentrated, you could dilute a bit more with water ( in total about a litre). Keep me posted on the results. Merry Xmas!
Will spraying a solution of Neem Oil on the Canna plant prevent rust, diseases & other insect infestation? Your red soil reminds me of the soil in Georgia, USA - also laden heavy with iron. Thanks.
Hi Neem is organic and I prefer it because I have dogs. With Neem you will have to repeat the application every 2 weeks until the Rust or other infestation is eradicated. Also remember that Rust is a fungus and thrives in places where there is a lack of circulation and humidity. So by removing some of the foliage and allowing air to circulate will help. In addition, try watering the soil and not the leaves will also help. People do use fungicide and it does get rid of Rust very quickly.
Hi Lee, propagation can be done during spring as the weather gets warmer. Propagation works better when there is warmth and humidity. Do you store your Canna over winter?
I bought one canna lily about three years ago. I now have a massive clump of about 30, 6 foot tall canna lillies. I’m so afraid to dig up the clump because I want to separate them and plant them all around my home. I don’t want to destroy the plant.
Dividing cannas is actually good for the plant and you should not feel afraid. By dividing you give them room to grow and not to compete for water and nutrients. Just dig up the clump, separate the rhizomes and clean out the dead bits and then plant. The beauty of cannas is that they are fast growing. Good luck and Happy gardening.
Hello, I was searching for a way to propagate or divide cannas. When your video was recommended. I was on the right track. I’ve had these two, one is a variegated green and yellow leaf that blooms an orange/red and the other green leaf that blooms a blush pink they are planted in these huge glazed pots. I have been wanting to add a burgundy canna, hopefully one that blooms pink. Cannas are so beautiful and forgiving, I really love 💗 them in the garden, I’ve seen hummingbirds go to them all the time. But now I’m curious as to what color your new canna turned out to be.☺️ Did it bloom yet? Thank you!😉👍🏼
I have a corner in the backyard where these have completely taken over. I've been trying to figure out what kind they are because I was thinking of digging some up and selling the bulbs. The leaves are green and dark red/purple, and the flowers are red. They are huge, 6-8 ft tall.
Where is your garden? I'm in North Florida, where we get frost. My soil tends to be dry, but there are certain flower gardens I water every day. Perhaps I can grow them there with soil amendments. What would you recommend?
Hi I live in Nairobi Kenya. By adding compost in the soil it will help retain water and also to make it well draining. You can then add mulch over the soil and as it degrades this could also make your soil more porous.
Hi do the leaves have a brownish orange colour on some leaves and then they turn brown? . If so take a closer look and see if there are any spores at the back. If so it could be "rust", a fungal infection. Otherwise it could also be over watering or under watering. I would also advise you to take a leaf to a garden center and get some advice.
Thank you for sharing this amazing video. I love canna lilies. I live in Canada, so I have to remove the roots from the garden before the winter. Here is my question, when I replant them, rich foliage comes back, but the flower is small, skinny and thin. Not very rich looking, even though it is healthy and growing tall. I tried buying plants from the nursery, they had rich and large flower when I bought them. The next year the flower is very small and thin, I hope you can help me. Thank you
Yep...I live in Ontario Canada and have the same question...The cannas are tall and hearty as well as the leaves but with only small flowers that seem to bloom late in the season..
@@chriskowalski7038 Hi Chris! I live in Brockville, ON. Same problem (?) of small late blooming flowers on very robust plants. I've been growing them 4 years now, always with the same result. Rhizomes multiply like crazy, so no question that they are healthy. Maybe flower size is just a trait of the variety? Either way, humming birds love them, so I'll just try adding new varieties.
Hi, the height depends on the variety. As the stalks determine the height. And the flowers come from the stalk. If you cut the stalks then you will not get the blooms. Check with your garden centre as there are dwarf varieties of Cannas. Also very pretty.
During the winter so dig them out and store them. However, part of the Cannas life cycle is that the rhizomes need to be planted in soil after dormancy period unlike bulbs, which can survive without moisture. If not planted the rhizome will dry out and die.
Hi behind me is the Abutilon plant. The leaves look grey I think form the filming. Its a beautiful scrub comes in pink, yellow, orange and bi-colour. Thank you for asking.
Those brown spots could be a Rust.. Cannas' are susceptible to Rust which is a fungus. It can infect other plants. Take a sample of your leaf to the local nursery and get it analysed
Hi Emma, if you plan to collect seeds it also best to find out whether your variety does produce seeds. I have found that my red variety blooms and doesn't produce seeds. The best time to start your seed germination earlier in winter if you have a warm environment to kick start the germination. However, Spring can work as its warmer and it is the growing season in the northern hemisphere. The pod is hard, you could soak them in water and wait for it to germinate or file the hard coat until the white flesh is visible and then plant it directly in soil ( I have never tried this method). Keep me posted. I would be interested to know which method you plan to try and how the germination worked. Happy Gardening and good luck.
Hi Deborah, thanks for sharing. For the chilli / garlic spray, Get one large chilli or 3 teaspoon of dry chilli flakes (or a large chilli) and one bulb of garlic, add about half a cup of water and 20ml of dish washing liquid put it through a mixer. Transfer into a glass jar and leave it overnight to marinade. To use mix to a ratio 1:10. to water if the infestation is bad you can increase the ration of chilli garlic to water. Keep me posted if it works for you.
Thanks your detailed video! Can I used the big leave for steam food? I will wash it and put some sticky rice with meat and mushrooms and rape it! Steam it. The leave have any poison? Thanks

So propagating is economical even though unlawful because of the growers proprietary stamp 🙄
Thank you for sharing...yes propagation is the way to go.
beautiful cannas and garden! Can canna rhizomes be cut in the spring/early summer to be divided if they are still only 1 foot tall or will this effect their growth/flowering throughout the summer?
thank you!
Yes you can cut the rhizomes and replant. Is it a single Canna or is it many together, so that you have sufficient number of rhizomes ?
Subscribed! Brilliant channel, great presentation 👏
Thanks so much Craig!
Great video
Thank you Elaine. Check out the other Canna lilies information on my channel playlist. Thank you for following.
🙏🏿💕🙏🏿thank you for sharing.
I love your post!
Thank you
good clear video thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
My favorite Canna is called (here in the US) the "Wyoming" Canna. It has deep brown/bronze colored foliage, with bright orange flowers!
It must look so dramatic in your garden. Nice! Happy gardening
Thank you for sharing. With regards to flowering, make sure its in full sun. Enjoy Your "African Sunset" and the summer.
*I m from new delhi ,india* enjoyed your vedio...u r good going
So nice to know that you enjoyed the episode. Greetings from Kenya.
Can they be propagate from a leaf? Thank you!
@@mandyt1918 yes I would 🐔 out as well
Should I let them harden off before putting them in the ground?
Plant it as the babies come from the rhizome so you dont need to scab the roots. Remember Cannas love hot sun
What an amazing garden you have , thank just about to plant 9 canna's so very interesting , what colour flower did the stripy leaf have ??? x
Great video. Very useful thank you :-)
Glad it was helpful!
Hello Alice. This is a great video. Can I ask how much garlic to put into the chilli garlic and onion spray? Many thanks.
Your video was most informative. I was wondering when is the best time to propagate? I live in central Florida.

But now I’m curious as to what color your new canna turned out to be.☺️
Did it bloom yet? Thank you!😉👍🏼
Hi Cannas are beautiful, mine flowered orange, I plan to get more colours, I saw a Canna with pink flowers and it looked stunning
Great Video! I will separate my Canna’s this week, thanks🌻👩🏼🌾
Great if you have any queries please get back to me
I have a corner in the backyard where these have completely taken over. I've been trying to figure out what kind they are because I was thinking of digging some up and selling the bulbs. The leaves are green and dark red/purple, and the flowers are red. They are huge, 6-8 ft tall.
Hi Haley, it could be a Tropicanna. Take a leaf to a garden center and see if they can identify the Canna. Good luck with selling you Cannas
where is your garden?
Kenya...got it!
Greetings from Riverview, FL
Thank you for following my channel.
@@redsoilgardener Yes. I understand. Thank you!
Very informative
My canna lily leaves are brown and new leaves are also look like brown why
Thank you
Canna's need full sun in order for it to bloom. Move it to where it get s sun
Thank you so much learned alot
Glad it was helpful!
If I want to keep my canna lilies to about 4 ' tall can I cut the stalk down?
Hi, the height depends on the variety. As the stalks determine the height. And the flowers come from the stalk. If you cut the stalks then you will not get the blooms.
Check with your garden centre as there are dwarf varieties of Cannas. Also very pretty.
How long can you keep them out of the ground like that before they die?
During the winter so dig them out and store them. However, part of the Cannas life cycle is that the rhizomes need to be planted in soil after dormancy period unlike bulbs, which can survive without moisture. If not planted the rhizome will dry out and die.
Thanks for the knowledge you have a new subscriber in me
Thanks and welcome
What is that beautiful shrub with gray leaves behind you?
Hi behind me is the Abutilon plant. The leaves look grey I think form the filming. Its a beautiful scrub comes in pink, yellow, orange and bi-colour. Thank you for asking.
@@redsoilgardener Thank you. Your videos are lovely!
Great video thank you
Thanks Donna
I have brown spots on the purple leaf.what is happening too much or too little water
Those brown spots could be a Rust.. Cannas' are susceptible to Rust which is a fungus. It can infect other plants. Take a sample of your leaf to the local nursery and get it analysed
@@redsoilgardener thank you for your help it has spread to my Green leaf as well.
thank you top infmation
You are welcome, glad it was helpful.
What flower color came from the unknown canna?
Sorry for the late reply... It flowered orange, this is for the canna with maroon leaves.
❤ from India
Thank you
Where did you get the main stems?
Hi I uprooted most of the plants from my garden. But the one with the maroom stripped I saw in the roadside nursery and got tempted.
How to plant seed pods
And when?

The flower colour will be orange I have one but bought it for the leaf colour
Beautiful thanks for sharing

You're welcome!
There is no garlic listed in the recipe. How much?
Hi Deborah, thanks for sharing. For the chilli / garlic spray, Get one large chilli or 3 teaspoon of dry chilli flakes (or a large chilli) and one bulb of garlic, add about half a cup of water and 20ml of dish washing liquid put it through a mixer. Transfer into a glass jar and leave it overnight to marinade. To use mix to a ratio 1:10. to water
if the infestation is bad you can increase the ration of chilli garlic to water. Keep me posted if it works for you.

Thanks your detailed video! Can I used the big leave for steam food? I will wash it and put some sticky rice with meat and mushrooms and rape it! Steam it. The leave have any poison? Thanks
Hi your recipe sounds really delicious but as I not aware of the use of the Canna leaves in food, I can not confirm or recommend.
