Sega Genesis Model 1 vs Model 2

  • I'm doing this review over because in my first review I was using a shotgun mic instead of a stereo mic. Also the AV cable for my Model 2 was defective.
    In this video I will be reviewing the Sega Genesis Model 1 and the Model 2. The Genesis Model being used in this example is a VA3 revision which means its an early Genesis without any security feature. The Model 2 is an VA1 revision which is supposedly one of the "bad Genesis consoles". In this video you'll see that isn't entirely true.
    While the Model 1 HD does sound better, it isn't going to be night and day better. Your really just getting better bass and cleaner highs with the model 1. But other then that the video quality from both is fine. The model 1 has no smoothing and good color, while the model 2 has some smoothing and slightly more contrasty color.
    All Genesis Model 1 and 2 systems are fine. So long as you can play your Genesis games and have fun while doing so.

      I've taken my consoles apart and cleaned them, even as one suggested running the shell through the dishwasher and I can't get them to look that good, I honestly don't get it. Perhaps you should do videos on cleaning consoles then, I've tried EVERYTHING and get my Gens to look that good, even watching him touch them with his greasy fingertips ya wonder where he got new Genesis consoles from and how he had the nerve 1) to even open them and 2) to touch em with his greasy gummy fingers. +Sergio V This was a VA1 Model 2 Genesis. I replaced this model with a VA0 Genesis (for its better Sony Video encoder) and noticed a pretty good amount of distortion with the VA0 revision. It used the same Co-Op Amps as this VA1 but the capacitor layout was different. Needless to say I regret swapping out my Model 2 for the other :( However I have actually replaced my VA0 Model 2 with a VA3. The preamp setup is completely different and actually sounds just as good as my Model 1! So I'm happy again lol.

      Nope its just a cable. What gives the older Model 1 consoles better audio was a cleaner audio amp. Sega really screwed up on newer Model 1 consoles and most model 2 consoles. They switched from a regular Preamp to an Operational Amplifier setup which used a very poorly designed circuit. In newer Model 2 consoles this was corrected and reversed back to a traditional Preamp setup.

      There's nothing too 90's about model 2. It was a very safe bland attempt design wise, but I love just how much smaller and compact it is, just like the SNES Jr and Top Loader NES compared to their original models. Yet a brand new out of the box 1989/model 1 'high definition graphics' Genesis took my breath away way back when. It still looks awesome to this day and is rocking that 'in your face' loud late 80's/early 90's gamer attitude. Back when consoles actually had character.
      Yet I'm completely over all 3 versions/variants of the 3 button genny' controllers. The 6-button is definitely where it's at! Especially from Retro-Bit since it's brand spanking new and a perfect clone.

      @RobertNES816  7 років тому +3

      ArcadeEvolution Its because people are running out of systems to collect for. The Genesis Sega CD and 32x are really the last systems most people will collect for. Once resellers start to see a spike in Genesis sales and console sales they'll start to raise prices.
      However the Model 1 and even early Model 1 consoles like mine are super easy to find, they were launch models so they sold the most.

    • @ItsTommiii
      @ItsTommiii 7 років тому +1

      Robert NES816 That is quite interesting. I been trying to find at least an affordable model 1 because of the higher video quality and audio quality as well. I'm still waiting for my Model 2 to arrive. But hey the genesis was an amazing console and one of the more successful consoles for Sega in general. But, once I find a cheap model one I will get on it in a heart beat. But yeah man the sega cd is just really hard to find a good one that works. 32x's are also becoming more scarce now. Then back in 2010. Back in 2010 it was selling for like $15- 20 bucks with the cables. Now its like 100+ sometimes 50 if you find a good deal

    • @RobertNES816
      @RobertNES816  7 років тому

      ArcadeEvolution Yeah it's what happens when people see an opportunity to cash in on a market. These systems aren't hard to find. If you search around you'll eventually find one cheap. Just wait and you'll get a Model 1 one cheap. Also the model 1 doesn't have the best video quality. It's actually kinda soft and has rainbow banding, Newer Model 1 systems with TMSS have better video and just as good audio.
      The best Genesis is a VA4 model 2 . Those are hard to find because they were made from 1996 till 1997. Sega was pushing the Saturn and pretty much abandoned the Genesis at that time which was stupid on their part. But anyway the VA4 model 2 is technically the best Genesis since it has the best audio and video. After that any VA6 to VA6.8 Model 1 will be a close second.

    • @ItsTommiii
      @ItsTommiii 7 років тому

      Ah that is interesting. So where do you find this board revision model? Thanks for the advice and info as well! This is pretty cool game system! Its too bad I wasn't born around the time this console came out. I was playing this console when I was a kid but my dad only had 2 games.That led me to playing the NES a lot more my dad had a lot of games for it. Sonic 2 and Aladdin which are are amazing games. I wanted to explore the world of genesis. Like Truxton and Road Rash and other games.

    • @RobertNES816
      @RobertNES816  7 років тому

      ArcadeEvolution You just have to keep looking. They're hard to find since the VA3 and VA4 were both made around the time when the Saturn was launched so sales for the Genesis were slowing down. I found both at a flea market, I paid $20 for a complete setup and $10 for a loose console.
      You just look at the under of the system and check to see if the metal shielding stops halfway through the vents. If they do then you have one of the good revisions.
      VA3 has great sound and good video. VA4 has great sound and very good video. VA3 is the more common of the two.

    From what I've gathered (at least with JP consoles), all Model 1s that have the serial port in the back are the ones that have the highest audio quality. (JP systems also had an equivalent "High Definition Graphics" branding thing on the front, which was later dropped just like the USA consoles. But it's not relevant in terms of audio quality.)
    Japanese consoles also don't have the RF port, but that's not really relevant nowadays anyway.

      +Kelly Greenidge The video quality of the Model 2 Genesis is actually a little better then the Model 1. Also since your getting a Sega CD then you don't really have to worry about the sound quality too much as long as you use the stereo output on the Sega CD instead of the Genesis.
      So to answer your question I'd go with a Model 2 Genesis (Dime a dozen, very easy to find) and a model 2 Sega CD.
      I personally like the Model 1 Genesis and Model 1 Sega CD better from a cosmetic view. But they are harder to find. Also every Model 1 SCD you come across will need a new drive belt since they all dry rot from age. I know how to replace them. But if your not familiar with taking apart CD ROM drives, then its best to buy a model 2 SCD.

      Gotta have an eye for cosmetic flaws and scratches. Every system, controller and accessory I get looks really dirty. But underneath all the dirt and dust is a nice console waiting to be cleaned lol. I'm really picky when I look for stuff so I only pick the best I can find. I then take the whole system apart and clean the plastic parts with a soft tooth brush, dish washing soap and warm water. I then let the parts sit in front of a fan for a few hours and then blow out the screw holes with compressed air. The RF shields and circuit board I just blow off with compressed air, no more then 60 PSI.

      At the time I was using an older LG 300 watt soundbar. Now I'm using a JBL BAR 2.1 system (better base and mid-range). But the key it to use an inline audio filter to get rid of all the "electronic" noise these old systems produce. The SNES and NES aren't too bad. But the Genesis has allot of electrical noise that gets amplified greatly with modern audio equipment.

    I thought my Sega Genesis model 2 was broken as a kid so I just put away to fix it later, fast forward 25 years later and I found out I just needed a new RF switch and power adapter, sadly I don't know where to get the OEM ones.

    • @RobertNES816
      @RobertNES816  6 років тому

      NASIRUB1 The AC adapters rarely ever fail on the model 2 systems. Its always the console. The model 2 is known for having issues with the power socket coming loose on the board. The solder cracks from fatigue and causes the system not to power on.
      Also FYI non OEM AC adapters will ruin the system since they're made with inferior components and also don't have any real quality control.

      Its always a crap shoot. Japanese consoles can have the bad Samsung video encoder. But they will usually have a Fujitsu or Sony encoder. Samsung encoders have thin black vertical lines that show up in title title screens and on backgrounds with low detail. However if you get one of the newer model 2 consoles with the 3/4 board and Samsung encoder then you'll be fine. They fixed the thin vertical line issue with those boards.

      Now if you have a "Genesis model 2", it's different ways to play Japanese games on your console. There is
      A. Simply get it modified.
      B. I think but not entirely too sure, you're able to use everdrive as some type of form of means to play japanese games simply by downloading emulated versions of those titles.
      And the rest (if there are any alternatives) I'm left pretty clueless. Other than that there's always the simple (if you can find one somewhere) idea of getting a model 3. You can't use the add-ons, and I forget how good or bad the sounds are compared to model 1 and 2 but right off the bat you're able to play all of the games exclusively released in Japan for the Mega Drive on Majesco's version of the device.

    Question, on the genesis model 2 underneath it, does it say made in China or Japan.

      I would have to agree with you. The Model 2 is easier to setup with those add-on's. But I personally don't have any interest in ever using or owning a 32x. So for me I just have to use one additional cable to use the Model 1 with the SCD. It's just is a standard 3ft auxiliary cable, The SCD needs it to mix the FM and CD audio from the SCD together. The Model 2 Genny does this internally.

      @@RobertNES816 I feel that in most cases (Xbox 360 being a notable exception) the earliest models of consoles are the most robust. They're 30+ years old now, and as far as I know mine is all original caps. No noise or video artifacts, looks great on my even older Trinitron. I wouldn't be surprised if these things still work 50 years from now.

      The Model 2 has stereo aswell. You need to buy a video cable with left and right stereo out. Sega only provided a mono cable, but sold the stereo version separately.
