I remember that day well, I was 16 years old waiting to turn 17 in March, Buddy Holly was my favorite singer at the time. and I was very happy that he was coming to a place where I could see him. I was born and raised in Minnesota and some friends and I were planning on going to the Crystal Ballroom in Fargo ND to see him. When I heard the news on the radio, it was like someone had pulled the rug out from under me and I was in shock. What was very ironic was the fact that, right after that every one was p-laying his new recording. IT DOESN'T MATTER ANYMORE! I both loved and hated that recording!!
Umm sorry no, Holly exists because of Elvis. See, Buddy was lucky enough to see Elvis when all Holly knew was country music. When Buddy saw Elvis on the Louisiana hayride, it was typical for the Hayride to get a local group to perform as opening act when the Hayride came through a small town, Holly got the call and saw Elvis' band do their Elvis' style rockabilly, blues, gospel rock country....It was then that the spirit of rock was born inside of Buddy via Elvis. And a side note....when Elvis did the first electric bass lead rocker, "You're So Square, Baby I don't Care", Elvis played the bass on the record, people recall that it completely blew Hollys' mind. Buddy was Great, but like 95% of all the greatest acts in the history of rock, the spirit of Elvis is what started the rock fire in their souls. It simply is a fact, not an opinion.
Diffrence is Buddy was a musician and producer and ahead of his time. Where as Elvis was an outstanding performer and singer but did not write or produce much of his own music.
In the early 1970's I was a student at Aberdeen University when friends introduced me to a very lovely girl from Lubbock, Texas. When I asked if she was a Buddy Holly fan, she said she had never heard of him. I challenged this, but she insisted. I realised then who she might be and I let the subject drop. I never met her again.
I was born about 11 years after the crash, and I am obsessed with Buddy's music. Like the Beatles, it's impossible to listen to his music and not feel good.
I wrote a story that he missed the plane lost his memory in a car crash and then remembered 20 years later - Terry Pratchett wrote a story Soul Music with a similar theme - that's how much we all miss him. My friend a guitar player from Scotland John Anderson drove to Lubbock and got to play with a guy who knew Buddy I will always be jealous of that.
Something most people probably have never thought of, but Ritchie was probably only 16 years old or barely 17, when he recorded most of his material...what an incredible talent. Also, I always wondered who played that great guitar in "LaBamba", and I came to find that it was Carol Kaye of all people...woman was a genius during her career.
Same lady carol Kaye who told me rock n roll is shit and not worth playing. Jazz is where it's at she says. Curses me then blocks and deletes me. Yea what a nice lady. She has a chip on her shoulder cause the industry screwed her over.
Yes she was! She played on so many "hits", it was mind boggling. Talk about unsung heroes! Most people dont have a clue who she is! She probably opted for studio work, because back then, nobody wanted to be in a band with a woman! What a shame, she could have been one of the greatest rockers in her own right!

Jan 30, 2020: I dedicate this video to Sgt Manuel R. Martinez, 23, who was killed in an auto accident on Aug 22, 1975 south of Santa Fe. Returning to Albuquerque from a long work week at the Farmington mine, he rolled his 240Z Datsun. (His hard work at $2000 a month cost him his life.) Manuel trained as a Marine at Camp Pendleton (radio operator), served a year in Okinawa and was a Catholic, member of the VFW & Carpenters Union. (Since I was still in high school, we exchanged letters often. By the time I graduated, I knew that I had fallen in love with him.) Manuel graduated from West Mesa High School in 1970 and participated in track & field. Manuel's shy grin, warm heart, gentle spirit and strong work ethic were endearing traits. Though he liked pretty girls and nice clothes, he was wise beyond his years. His passing shattered my heart....life has never been the same. VICKI

Sheldon,I was singer in a little rock band in 59.We were doing Buddys songs before he died.I missed him in UK but saw Gene Vincent around same time. When Buddy died we al got together on acoustic guitars and had a kinda wake.Unbeleivable to think ,our back then lead guitarist just learning his trade was a 15 year old kid named Albert Lee who many many years later moved to cal,and became a honorary member of the crickets.Even he says when he looks back it does not seem possible he plays with the surviving crickets.

The true king of rock and roll died on this day buddy was doing things with music to Elvis never even thought of loved Elvis but buddy was in a league of his own God bless you buddy rest in peace
Dion Valentine none of them are the king of rock n roll. Blacks started rock n roll
@@thatboy_chey6855 yes black music was a big influence on both Elvis and Buddy Holly
@@thatboy_chey6855 That's Funny, Bill Haley was the first Rock & Roll before any of the Rest. Black music at that time was mostly Blues. Bill Haley influenced them All. Just Sayin.

Such a sad story. They had their whole lives ahead of them. RIP Buddy, Ritchie, and the Big Bopper.
And Eddie Cochran was too shortly follow them in 1960
Not a Buddy Holly fan. the man could not get rid of the hiccups

RIP to pilot Roger Petersen too, who was only 21 and, like Buddy, a newlywed who left a young widow behind. 😢💔💔💔
This is wonderful. I lived in Dallas, Texas. I was so sorry for his family. More executives and stars are killed in plane crashes. I still listen to his music and I am 73.

still listening at 76 he was one of the best, fame cut short by stupidity on the part of others.
Rock on, baby!
Well I was born in 1974 my dad listen to Elvis and buddy Holly for me it was all about buddy Holly so when we go out when we go on holiday I can't help but to sing along to buddy Holly.
My close friend has an evolope and a letter from Buddy Holly he wrote to his Parents. The envelope has his parents address and is Post-marked stamp and was sent. The letter from Buddy told his parents they finished the tour and the group was going to A Recording Studio to record another record. It's authentic and A treasure. My friend is a collector and also has autographs of Richie Valens Michael Jackson even A Samuel Addams signature. I first seen his collection and I was astonished at the various famous people who his collection contains. Honesty Buddy Holly is My Favorite. When I took a winter route to LA from Omaha Nebraska, I took the southern route to avoid winter storms especially Colorado.i made Sure it went through Lubock Texas in honor of Buddy Holly. I also took route 66 Because I sang the song so much in Cover Band's I had. I went through Roswell New Mexico Too ❤️ I have a great interest in UFO'S Too ❤️ LoL Living in Omaha Nebraska I Had several Opertunities to play with BUDDY MILES TOO. I WAS A BASS PLAYER FOR A TRIBUTE BAND TO JIMI HENDRIX ( Rex-perience) my friend Grover Lipkins started (He Was JIMI HENDRIX) lol 😂 I Loved that Band Too ❤️... You never get tired of playing Jimi Hendrix. When Buddy Miles was in Town We had Buddy Miles playing drums of course. Buddy Miles also had BLACK Flag and BAND of Gypsy's Too.. I've played with numourous Other notable Music Maker's over the years but I will get back to you on that.
on 3rd February every year I have a Buddy day plus a bit of Everlies and the Big O : they are not neglected the rest of the year - Buddy H still so fresh after all those years
Man rock and roll was so raw no drugs honest work sure could use that now RIP my brothers
How do you know? Not to smart of an assumption!
Always wonder what if Buddy had lived... he'd have had an influential career for sure, making the industry better had he stuck around. I could imagine the network tv specials celebrating Buddy Holly's 50th Birthday in 1988. :(
I saw the musical on stage in Northport NY and although I was only a kid when Buddy died the singer was so good I felt like I really saw Buddy Holly
You did. Buddy lives through us.

Wow. What a somber story and a multi-faceted one. Thank you so much for making this video and sharing it with us!
Um dos maiores genios do rock n` roll, viveu pouco, mas deixo muito. maneco - Porto Alegre-RS -Brasil.
Had the privilege of visiting Surf Ballroom and the actual crash siteback in 2009. A very emotional experience.
I both loved and hated that recording!!
am 61 and will say..not hypocritical..but he was a genius and a start of rock and roll..the TRUE king of rock n roll:)
Kinda left Chuck Berry out of the mix, and Chuck outlived the both of them and Chuck was larger influence on rock n roll, than. Buddy.
@@krincomtl3773 Elvis produced Many of his Albums.
So who was the girl??
I was born about 11 years after the crash, and I am obsessed with Buddy's music. Like the Beatles, it's impossible to listen to his music and not feel good.
Buddy Holly we lost him much to soon he was years ahead with his music RIP.
I remember that day very very sad who knows how great he would have been.
Rest in peace buddy Holly ❤️😭🙏🪦🕊️⚰️🌹❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Something most people probably have never thought of, but Ritchie was probably only 16 years old or barely 17, when he recorded most of his material...what an incredible talent. Also, I always wondered who played that great guitar in "LaBamba", and I came to find that it was Carol Kaye of all people...woman was a genius during her career.
Ritchie was also extremely scared of flying. Faith just wasn’t with him. Very sad.
She a bitch
Same lady carol Kaye who told me rock n roll is shit and not worth playing. Jazz is where it's at she says. Curses me then blocks and deletes me. Yea what a nice lady. She has a chip on her shoulder cause the industry screwed her over.
Her catalogue was hijacked so she hates the world. Gonna make a song about her.
The man was unasuming. yet brilliant!!!!

VICKI

Nice to see some footage of Buddy Holly that is truly "live" and not the studio version of the song added to the video.
Waylon Jennings Buddy Holly was one of my all-time favourites same with Richie and the big bopper great music, I wish I could ( knuckle you up )for what you said. DAGO Ca.🕶
I live in Lubbock and it saddens me to see Buddy's graveyard resting place be so small nothing like a guitar or album not even a statue of him yet they are building a huge 2nd museum for him..I wish they put something of his in his resting place
ThreeBears Sandoval Buddy was an innovative young man how many singer in the 60 tried to use his unique singing style! I agree he and the crickets belong in a museum commemorating these musicians novel music. He was, for me the first rock and roll star!
Over to you, then: take responsibility for putting something appropriate on his grave, keep it cleaned and maintained, and organise a guitar festival in the graveyard every year - I bet that thousands would come.
What a legend his music will live forever he achieved so much in such a short time it’s unbelievable the amount of music he created ❤️🩹🎵⭐️
A true tragedy. He and the others were taken too soon. This was a great loss to the early rock and roll genre.
He was a amazing g star that left the earth way way to early in his life. God Bless.
He the best rock and roll 😎🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
I still play the 45 record of BUDDY HOLLY MY FAVORITE OF ALL TIME.
Oh! I remember Buddy. My dad was Ralph Daniel,akaR.D..Holley, My grandfather was Roy Frankland Holley. It was a very sad day for all of us.😢 Diana Gail Holley.
That guitar sound was new to me, it was the stuff dreams are made of - I had to get my own. I started doing Buddy Holly vocal impressions, but never got the opportunity to do them in public. I remember sadly the day the music died.
What can you say about buddy holley he was well ahead of his time with his guitar sound and song writing no wonder the beatles loved buddys music no buddy holley no beatles rip buddy
I like how you've used his name's original spelling. Obviously a real fan!

Wow cold shivers for Waylon Jennings story. His life hung on the balance of the coin being flipped!

Waylon Jennings wasn't involved in the coin toss with Ritchie Valens. It was Tommy Allsup who tossed the coin.
why would they assign a pilot who had hearing issues and history of panicking on night flights, to fly PERIOD! This is just amazing. Wow.
Rachel Alexander read the FAA report,it was pretty good and shows how and why the plane crashed, pilot error.
That's absurd and stupid.
@@nadiazahroon6573 It was NOT Pilot Error.
@@Tornado1994 Sadly it was, Peterson was not IFR certified and should not have been flying in those conditions as he was only able to fly to VFR. Tragic accident but could have been avoided so easily. :(
I keep hearing different accounts. One documentary said that the pilot didn't get the weather warning. I hate that people keep blaming the young pilot. I've had a friend die in the their sleep, and one die quick of cancer. I wasn't even born when this tragedy happened. Nobody is guaranteed tomorrow.

Buddy was an outstanding entertainer. Especially for that time.
Losing these guys is heartbreaking. I got their records.
They put Lubbock on the map..
Have you looked through her yearbooks?
That's so cool.
Looks like Waylon was sitting at an MCI mixing console, as I am in this photo. This is quite interesting. I have been a fan of all three of these guys since the days when they were on the radio. For years, there was all this mystery about what happened ... I mean, there just wasn't anything out there about any of this, I hadn't even seen a photo of the crash site. What a loss. BTW, Tommy Allsup's guitar work was a perfect fit for Buddy's writing and singing style. Boy, what a match.
Still miss him. Still play his great songs.

Imagine the music they could of made over the years if they had lived...... very sad!
Chris, the AirForce sent me to Lubbock in 71... I ended up living across the alley from Ms Holley... turned out to be Buddy's mom. I mowed her yard, and did'nt even know who she was. I've always wondered where the music would be now. Take care. O btw Joe Ely, another Lubbock artist and his wife named their daughter Maria Elena. (Buddy's wife's name)
TC Smith thanks for that, I like stories like that,
Im a history nut, especially music history, and this story has always fascinated me, but yes Buddy was a pioneer in several ways having to do with guitar playing, and voice techniques.
Thanks for your story!
Chris, I dont spend much time here... but music and how country and rock blended together in some ways fascinates me, cos I was a hippie acid rock kid in the 60's until I realized all the San Francisco bands were country influenced LOL
I still wonder where music would be had Buddy lived. The Beatles were very influenced, and music in the states went stagnant. Like that song "The Day The Music Died" by Don McLean.Told the story. OH look up Kinky Friedman. You'd like some of his
