Gary Oldman as Shen in this movie is an absolutely incredible performance, he really takes this from a good sequel to an amazing one. As Holden says he balances and compliments Jack Black as Po 👌👌👌👌
Kung Fu Panda Villains are really well written, but Shen just stands out. He is such a complex character, the portrayal of his hunger for power is impeccably executed.
I love each of the villains in this series, Shen for how he is written, Tai Lung for how well he counters Po as a warrior, and Kai (I believe 3 is kai) because he's has an interesting power and forces Po to think outside the box. Plus his music is kind of badass
Not sure if you knew: 1) Shifu (or Sifu) means "teacher" or "master" in mandarin so his name is literally Master Master. 2) All the Furious Five are the different styles of kung fu (tiger, mantis, viper etc.) and the animators made a conscious effort to display each style for each character. 3) Audiences and film makers in China were shocked at how a western animated movie (the first KFP) so lovingly portrayed Chinese cultural ideas and a kung fu story....to the point of wondering why the Chinese movie industry had not done that yet.
I agree with Jen! I think when Lord Shen realized that his feathers triggered Po's traumatic memory of losing his mother, he does it on purpose the second time in order to distract him and uses it as a weapon to make him vulnerable against him. He saw how Po's attention was set on his feathers as soon as he fans them, cause it's what made him remember who he is and understands that he plays an important role in his past as to where he comes from.
If u remember in the first movie oogway said "one often Mets his destiny on road he takes to avoid it" by shin attempting to kill the pandas it sent po to the valley of peace where he would become the legendary dragon warrior that would lead him to met shin which lead to his defeat
It's also implied that it's Shen himself, not Po, who is being referred to as "the warrior of black and white." It's his obsessive pursuit of conquest and refusal to back down and admit fault that puts him in the confrontation that kills him, and by his own cannon no less.
@@TheAngryXeniteNo, that would make him the warrior of black, white, and RED. You forgot the tail spots. They are literally a plot point of Po remembering his parents and what happened to them. I constantly feel like I'm saying this, but Shen is NOT albino, he's leucistic.
I'm not gonna cry... I'm not gonna cry... *scene where Po finds his inner peace*... 😭 What a truly powerful message about accepting your past and being at peace with it. In a movie about a Kung Fu Panda
i think Shen accepted his fate because he knows he lost everything, even when he tries to kill Po again after showing mercy he sees the prophecy is still fighting back and seeing his canon fall down upon him the very thing he thought he could conquer everything feels like death is coming for his misdeeds so he fully accepts that he lost and will die with his hatred too
A detail I always loved is at 20:07 The wolf that Po’s father hit with the hammer, loses his eye. That wolf ends up becoming the wolf boss we see during the film, who’s now missing an eye. This movie will always be my favorite of the trilogy, I never get sick of watching it.
This is one of my all time favorite movies. The character arc that Po goes through in this film is incredible and the message is so amazing. Plus, the score by Hans Zimmer is one of his best.
This one is my favorite out of the series with its story. If you wonder why its darker then the other movies its because Guillermo del Toro produced Kung Fu Panda 2 and you can see he added dark moments in this one. I loved how everyone has grown and respect Po especially Tigress who disliked him the most in the 1st movie but in this one she has become very close to him and has become like a friend you ask for guidance and is like a older sister to him. An emotional story and movie for sure.
One of my favorite things about Po is how kind he is. At the end with his speech to Shen about scars/wounds healing, and in the first film where he tries to explain the dragon scroll to Tai Lung. He fights passionately, but they don’t really try to make him ‘tough’.
Gary Oldman is my favorite actor of all time and I absolutely loved him as Shen. It's partly the reason why Shen is my favorite Dreamworks villain ever.
Technically Shen might be considered a warrior of black and white since he's a white peacock, he trained in marital arts, dagger and weapon combat, he bested two masters. This could be further implied as the travel/get ready montage was playing, it went to black and grey, and showed po/shen on opposite sides, then reverse/swap places to the ying yang symbol. Shows they are similar but also different. And he led himself to his own demise bc he wouldn't stop, po just avoided/dodged. He himself was his own undoing, he could've stopped he chose to keep going
he was the warrior of black and white... he defeated himself. "There is no secret ingredient. it's just u." "One often finds his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it." all the call backs are there
Fun Fact: Shen not only killed pandas but all creatures that represented black and white. Tai Lang also fit that description hence why he was found as a cub by Master Shifu and because of that genocide it was destiny for Po to defeat Tai Lang, defeat Shen and become the dragon warrior. So Tai Lang and his parents and family also suffered at the hands of Shen
My fav Dreamworks movie behind The Last Wish. God this movie hits so hard, I love the inner peace scene, the climax and the Score in the end goes SO HARD! Shen is a really cool villain and I love the connection he has with the main character, and I love the tone of this movie. 10/10
Kung Fu Panda 2 is my favorite from the entire trilogy. I love the story, the music/score and the ideas of finding inner as it was so beautifully shown. Plus big up the story tellers as they were so to the point and efficient with how they wanted to make this movie by taking the themes from the first one and blossoming it into this film where we get to see how Po learns about his childhood, being adopted, relationship with his Dad and his friendship with the furious five especially Tigress and most importantly discovering “HIS” inner peace. The action sequences were great as well. Gary Oldman was great as the antagonist ‘Lord Shen’ as him being a peacock was shown with such grace, with such balletic movements and some dominant lines, and Lord Shen is one of my favorite animated antagonists, definitely top three. Loved your reactions/analysis, take care, stay healthy, enjoy life and have a good one
The soothsayer was wrong in the end, you know? Po wasn't destined to defeat Shen, it was Shen himself. A warrior of black and white who was crushed by a master from his own ship.
This is my favorite movie in the franchise and one of my favorite movies of all time tbh. The message is amazing, the animation rocks and the action is rock solid! Plus like you guys said, this movie much more highlights the five as well which I really appreciate as somebody that always thought Tigress was the coolest character ever!
The scene when Po finally remembers what happened to his mother and finds inner peace is just great. It chokes me up every time I see it. If I feel I need a good cry, this is the movie I turn to.
I love this movie. We go deeper in the relationship between Tigress and Po. Garry Oldmen does the voice of Peacock 🦚 beautifully. The comedic timing this movie is top notch.
This is the best DreamWorks movie imo. It has fantastic performances especially Shen. Comedy is great. Story is phenomenal. This was also one of the only animated movies to make me cry.
This is the best way I wanna describe this movie. When I watched it as a kid, I laughed, and I cried. As an adult years later watching again, I laughed and I cried. This is definition of a great sequel.
Kung Fu Panda 2 I think is the best because it has the most deepest, heart-wrenching story for Po. Its really personal and just so tragic. I loved the music in that flashback scene where he's really remembering the past. Hits me every time and gives me goose-bumps! Gary Oldman as Shen is so perfect too, he plays such a scary villain!
Yay! Jen liked it! I looove this one. I really appreciate how far they went with Po’s backstory and didn’t shy away from the ugliness that Shen wrought. Not only on the pandas, but within himself. He laughed at the idea of Po being the one destined to defeat him and became enraged and lost himself even more when he realized that nothing he could do could change his destiny, just like Po couldn’t change his. Except Po accepted his and changed with it, and became better for it. That flashback scene is rough but so beautifully done. I was crushed the first time I saw it 🥺 Again, so glad you guys liked it, especially Jen, since she wasn’t 100% sold on the first one. Great reaction. Can’t wait for y’all to see the third one. It’s definitely the cherry on top of the original trilogy 😙👌
The scene where Po finds inner peace at the old village is my favorite scene in all of animation. The way that they switch between the different animation styles is beautifully done, and the emotional weight that it carries is unmatched. Here's to hoping that KFP 4 will continue the strong themes and emotions that we've seen so far in the series.
To me, this one and HTTYD 2 are the best sequel animated movies!!! Even better than Shrek 2.. And also, my favorite of the trilogy. I truly love this movie, specially with some details... When he DREAMED his parents and the attack to the village for the first time, it was 2D; because it was something of his "imagination/a dream" (like the opening scene in Kung Fu Panda 1)... But when he finds his inner peace and truly accept what HAPPENED to his family, it is shown in 3D, because it has come his reality, a part of his life...
I always loved to point out that Po's origin resembles the story of Moses. An evil emperor gets a vision that someone from a specific group of people will defeat him. So he sends his troops out to kill all of them. Po survives because he's hidden in a basket and shipped to safety.
Dreamworks nailed how dark Kung fu panda 2 was. They should do more like it, especially with the upgraded animation style they have now that they are using for Kung fu panda 4 and used for puss in boots.
Actually the point of a peacocks tail feathers is to intimidate and drive off predators so Shen is using it as intended. Whether or not he knows its giving Po ptsd is another story but I do think its cool that he uses his tail to distract others in a fight.
ironically i think the sequel was more 'be who you are' where the first one was a commentary about oneness, and 'its just you' meaning you are one with life and it is the ultimate power, this sequel is quite good and did have more emotional weight
This movie was the peak imo. The characters progressed naturally from the previous entry and the overall story packed an emotional punch with an amazing villain. Lord Shen was equal parts Freeza and Voldemort rolled into one, but managed to differentiate himself from either of the two. I love the fact Shen has a vulnerable side to him and Gary Oldman voiced the character perfectly. I was looking forward to Kung Fu Panda 3 with so much excitement, but it took them 5 years to return. Since so much time had passed, the makers made the third movie with more comedic elements that were clearly aimed to draw kids in. Now Kung Fu Panda 4 is coming and it's coming out after 8 years. I know it will go a very different route and most likely have Po pass on the mantle. So for me, Kung Fu Panda 2 was the pinnacle.
Liked the message you voiced at the end, how this movie shows how you should push forward. I usually watch this for entertainment with your reactions but the way you described your thought this time helped me on a more personal level, appreciate it
I think the 2nd movie is my favorite in the series. The reveal of his past was heartbreaking and I love how that app was able to face his fear head on and show everyone how strong he could be, plus the cliffhanger at the end was an uplifting moment to end the movie
ARE THEY REALLY DOUBTING THESE MOVIES ???!!?!?! they’re honestly the best animated movies Dreamworks has ever came up with tbh , i’m so glad we’re getting a 4th nice to see Po all grown up now
The Kung Fu Panda series is def one of the best out there! Glad to see y’all enjoyed this one because you never know about sequels. If yall are still on the Dreamwork’s train, yall should check out the How To Train Your Dragon series!
I remember when this came out and Jack Black's son played the voice of the baby rabbit that cheered him on ''YEAH DEFEND THE VALLEY!" and the kid was so proud to get a red carpet time act the movie w his dad!
18:03 To answer that question, yes, it likely was intentional. That’s something that some peacocks will do in real life to try and threaten off certain predators. The spots and patterns can confuse or scare them long enough for the bird or get away.
I always tear up when there’s a flash back through everything Po accomplished in the first film as the Soothsayer exclaims that the circumstances surrounding Po’s early life do not define him.
Hard to explain but Shen voice actor is amazing. And the FX used around his every movement is absolutely incredible, can’t explain but man do I love hearing each scene he’s in.
This is genuinely my favorite movie ever. And I’m a cinephile. I’ve seen the filmographies of Scorsese, Fincher, Nolan, Kurosawa, Kubrick… and this is my favorite movie ever.
I dont think holden noticed in the flashback. when Po's dad hammers the wolf in the face it takes the wolfs eye out. indicating the head wolf in the movie is the one that tried to jump on Po as a baby
You guys should really check out Kung fu panda Secrets of the furious five. It’s a shorter movie that gives the backstory’s of each member of the furious five.
Shen was such a great villain, one who is more complex than somebody who wants power just for the sake of it. but a man who was built up by his own trauma and became a villain due to it because he didn't know how to handle it. Where as Po managed his trauma differently and grew from it. There's also a difference of upbringing for sure but that's the basis of it. I personally did feel for Shen, not that his actions are excusable but it's grounded and real none the less. Also that shot of Shen looking up at the canon falling towards him was a moment of accepting his fate, almost like he wanted to die for his sins and find peace that way.
Shen (Gary Oldman) is the best villain of the trilogy. As far as which is the best film, I remember liking the third one the best, but I might need to rewatch it.
The films aren't called The adventures of Master Shifu nor The furious 5 (shifu is based on pre-existing characters like pai Mae from kill bill, and the furious 5 are representative of the fighting styles). Po is the central character. There is a video that talks about why the films worked so well, even in china.
18:06 I think it is; peacocks flashing their feathers at a predator is an intimidation and confusion tactic (it makes them look bigger and scarier than they actually are). I like that they made it part of the story though
Jen is correct about the tale being used as a defence rather than a weapon though. Sometimes its size scares animals and sometimes it kinda bedazzles them
This is my favorite in the trilogy. It’s also one of my favorite movies of all times cause it personally hits me. Lord Shen is definitely the best villain in the trilogy and I love PO growth and acceptance of his trauma and Shen just can’t forget his. The message is just perfectly told
maybe this time I will be comment of the day.. Kung Fu Panda is one of the few movies that I loved as a kid and I still enjoy it very much at 25 years old 🎉🎉
I can still remember when i went to go watch the movie in theaters, my older cousin brought me and my sisters to the movie theaters, my sisters and cousin wanted to watch Pirates of the Caribbean ( the 4th I think), but me being nine at the time, wanted to go see kung fu panda and my cousin ended up going with me either because i didn't what to go alone or they just could let me go alone.
I honestly can't believe I didn't like this film when I firsted watched it, but after watching it again I found myself really enjoying it and really love lord shen as the villain, I love po and the furious five going on an adventure to stop lord shen, it just shows how much they have grown from the first film because the furious five didn't like po at first and now they consider po there friend and I love the scene where tigress hugs po like it just shows so much character growth
Kung-Fu Panda voiced by many great martial artists too, Monkey voiced by Jackie Chan, Master Croc voiced by Jean-Claude Van Dame and Soothsayer voiced by Michelle Yeoh
Can’t wait for you guys to watch the trilogy of How To Train your Dragon. I know you guys won’t watch the tv series that’s before the 2nd film but it’s great to watch for context. Especially since they are making a live action movie of it.
This movie is up there with Prince of Egypt as the best animated "kids" films of all time. Amazing villain in Gary Oldman's Shen, lots of really fun kung fu action, and super creative use of different styles of animation. The Inner peace scene and the stuff between Po and his adoptive father always get my eyes a bit teary.
Imo How to Train your Dragon is more of a perfect trilogy , but Kung Fu Panda trilogy is stil top tier . Shen is the best antagonist of the three movies but Tai Lung is still my favorite
Kung Fu Panda 2 is generally seen as the best one of the trilogy, in terms of writing. Personally, I find this one to be the most emotional and mature of the trilogy. And Shen is arguably DreamWorks’ best written villain. Gary Oldman was exceptional! And I think you’ll find KFP 3 is more of a comical film, but still amazing P.S. I knew Jen would love Baby Po 🐼 😂
Everytime i see someone watching kung fu panda series, i really wish they could watch the first one in spanish, Tai Long's VA performance when telling Shifu to "tell me you're proud" is just peek for some reason, it's so well done, you can hear like Tai Long is about to cry, if you have free time (just like 2 minutes of it) i would suggest just searching it up on youtube "dime que estas orgulloso Shifu". Of course not for a video, but in your personal time
Master Oogway said, "A person often meets his destiny on the road he took to avoid it.” 1st movie: Master Shifu sent a message to the prison to increase security and actually released Tai Lung. 2nd movie: Lord Shen decided to try and kill off all the pandas and technically created Po / The Dragon Warrior which led to his downfall.
Too bad you guys did not talk about the cast. Jack Black and Gary Oldman as Shen are an absolute highlight! in 3, watch out for J.K. Simmons and Bryan Cranston. With a special shoutout to Kate Hudson, who goes completely out of character!
I Love the Kung Fu Panda Trilogy! I love how these movies play around with fighting animation, the humour is on point on where it's supposed to be and how these movies play with your emotions(I'm not crying, you're crying). I think this one is a great flick as well, but I think I just have a more connection with the first one because of how many times I've seen the first one. But I can't wait for you guys to check out the third one!
Gary Oldman as Shen in this movie is an absolutely incredible performance, he really takes this from a good sequel to an amazing one. As Holden says he balances and compliments Jack Black as Po 👌👌👌👌
Shen is the main reason I always remember this movie! Gary Oldman just being great as always.
Facts, a hero's journey story hinges on how effective the villain is. And Shen is one of the best animated movie villains ever.
Kung Fu Panda Villains are really well written, but Shen just stands out. He is such a complex character, the portrayal of his hunger for power is impeccably executed.
Pfft. Impeckably
I love each of the villains in this series, Shen for how he is written, Tai Lung for how well he counters Po as a warrior, and Kai (I believe 3 is kai) because he's has an interesting power and forces Po to think outside the box. Plus his music is kind of badass
i wonder what would have happened if the Goat never did the prophecy
Disagree. Shen is well written. Tai Lung is just your generic power hungry evil and Kai is your generic revenge driven evil.
@@willpina
Tai Lung was really well written. It’s his backstory of potential and denial that made him the way he was.

“The monkey is not part of fabulous five is he?” That got me 😂
Jen’s reaction always the best 👍🏽
They perform on Broadway 😆
Why she picked on monkey of all the characters😂

What a truly powerful message about accepting your past and being at peace with it. In a movie about a Kung Fu Panda
That’s Dreamworks for you
Scene hits me deep everytime I see it ( due to personal reasons) and the music definitely makes it more impactful.
I loved Jen's face when she saw po's dad and the rest of the panda's alive it was great

A detail I always loved is at 20:07 The wolf that Po’s father hit with the hammer, loses his eye. That wolf ends up becoming the wolf boss we see during the film, who’s now missing an eye.
This movie will always be my favorite of the trilogy, I never get sick of watching it.

My fav Dreamworks movie behind The Last Wish. God this movie hits so hard, I love the inner peace scene, the climax and the Score in the end goes SO HARD! Shen is a really cool villain and I love the connection he has with the main character, and I love the tone of this movie. 10/10

great moment with the "no they dont" + the extended chuckle from the both of you
Liked the message you voiced at the end, how this movie shows how you should push forward.
It’s always nice coming to this channel after a 20 day remote work rotation 10 days to catch up yay
Kung fu panda 1 = mastery of the body
Kung fu panda 2 = mastery of the mind
Kung fu panda 3 = mastery of the soul/spirit
I love how in the first action scene of this movie, he’s literally living his dream from the first movie.
CAN'T WAIT UNTIL THEY WATCH KUNG FU PANDA 3!
1 - Body. 2 - Mind. 3 - Spirit. The trilogy was written to cover the three aspects of kung fu. Absolute brilliance.
Watch Big Hero 6. You'll love it.
Definitely after this you have to watch “how to train your dragon” that trilogy is the best animated trilogies of all time, pleaseee watch
I love it the sequel great especially when po get a hug so cute
This one starts to have my favorite reoccurring joke of stairs being Po's biggest enemy. I can't wait for the third movie
Sometimes its size scares animals and sometimes it kinda bedazzles them
I love these and I love that each movie in order Poe masters his body-1st movie, mind-2nd and then spirit-3rd
Kung Fu Panda is one of the few movies that I loved as a kid and I still enjoy it very much at 25 years old 🎉🎉
Po was almost the last airbender. Love Gary Oldman on this one.
Im in so much back pain rn having dinner but Holden you made me laugh at 22:19. Thank you. Much needed ❤
I love how shen himself is the warrior of black and white that defeated him. just as the prophecy foretold
The trilogy is soo perfect, they literally get better as u go through them as hard as it is to believe
This trilogy is similar to Nolan's Batman in that each of the films is different but equally good in its own way.
Peacocks naturally use their feathers to atract mates and scare off predators. So if a peacock were to use kungfu it would make sense they use it.
I've only just realised Po's father gave the wolf leader his bad eye.
Wow seeing Po’s mom sacrifice herself to save her son really hits different now watching this as a new parent myself. What a gut punch!
And I think you’ll find KFP 3 is more of a comical film, but still amazing
P.S. I knew Jen would love Baby Po 🐼 😂
HOLDEN AND SEAN COLLAB??? THE CROSSOVER OF THE CENTURY
Of course not for a video, but in your personal time
You need to watch Arcane!!! Best animated series imo, hits really hard!
Master Oogway said, "A person often meets his destiny on the road he took to avoid it.”
1st movie: Master Shifu sent a message to the prison to increase security and actually released Tai Lung.
Can we talk about the fact that Jen's hair LOOKED MAGESTIC in this video!?!?!?!?!?!?!🔥🔥🔥
This movie has the most impact for me especially that is it connected with family and learning to find your inner peace.
This movie still has one of Hans Zimmer's best scores. Got me through many MANY college essays 😂
I’m gonna be at Megacon! I have to come see you
Fun fact Lodd Shen is voiced by Gary Oldman!!!
