    love the design of this. Angle grinder attachments are so often so dangerous, but this design manages to make it remarkably safe, as well as clean, with the vacuum attachment. My only thought is that the rim should be made out of a harder material than plastic to prevent it from wearing down.

      Hi Jeff, that was a concern so we opted for a very high glass content and a high wear plastic. It still wears a slight flat and then stabilizes. We were ready to include a clip on metal shield but after extensive testing concluded it wasn’t necessary.

      Yes I admit there is a bit of technique that needs to be learned particularly with the bowls. Spheres are easier in my opinion. We trialed this with staff many of whom had little or no experience. Most did very well with it and you can see the results in the videos of the Arbortech woodcarving competition.

    Interesting product, Kevin. It has baffled me for a while but now i understand WHY it works so i think i will buy it. I have a couple of questions though. From the level position, how far inward can it retract...and from this same reference, how far can it protrude? Secondly, what is the diameter of the guard at the contact points. I just want to make informed decisions before i start any project. Thanks. Again, this is a genius product.

    • @kevinyoutube9645
      @kevinyoutube9645 10 днів тому +1

      Thanks for the questions George. Understanding how it works is crucial for using this tool and once you understand it, you’ll find it easy to use. I can’t say exactly how far inward the Blade retracts except to say that the minimum sphere you can produce is about 90 mm in diameter. Even if the blade could retract further, the geometry of the blade is such that it would no longer cut a smaller sphere as it would rub against the center of the blade. In terms of how far the blade can extend beyond the guard, I think it is about 10 mm and the smallest bowl I’ve been able to produce is about 110mm in diameter. There is no limitation to the maximum size of either a ball or a bowl However, with the bowl, there is an intermediate size where the limitation of the geometry of the length of the SpheroPlane and the angle grinder may get in the way. The blade is 50 mm in diameter and the guard is 90 mm in diameter. The adjustment ring is designed to give very fine adjustments because even a small change in the position of the blade can have a large effect on the diameter of the bowl or sphere, you’re trying to produce. I hope this answers your questions, but please feel free to contact me if you need more clarification.

      @GeorgeS-u8d 10 днів тому +1

      Kevin, thanks for your speedy response; I really appreciate it. I think you answered majority of my questions.
      I got to understand your magical device only by pulling out a pen and paper and doing some little math...and it checked out. Honestly, I was amazed. I'd call this Sagitta-Magic if I had invented it. LOL . On paper, after reviewing the geometric properties of a circle, I realized that once the chord (your fixed guard contact-points ) is kept constant, the tool will cut an arc with a fixed radius and ends up blending multiple arcs of the same radius to give you your final product. Now, if you modify the sagitta(versine) by adjusting the tool, you will get a new arc radius for that chord that does not change. Genius! I really love this tool.
      I think you should develop a small calculator on your Spheroplane page for bowl and ball carving enthusiasts to make informed decisions with a few inputs before they start any project.
      Also, I hope you and your R&D team can come up with a mini palm-held version ( like a regular orbital sander but smaller and still powerful).
      I don't carve bowls, but my brain is racing as I think of all the creative ways I could use this wonderful tool on my wood sculpture projects.
      Thanks, Kevin. You are the man!

    How long did that bowl take to make?
    How long does it take to make a 12” sphere ?
    How long does it take to somewhat master the technique of using that tool ?

      - It doesn't take long to master it. All you need is some practice. We've got plenty of videos showing the tips and techniques to master it in an efficient manner. ✌

      Generally speaking the maximum depth is half the diameter of the bowl. So a 300mm bowl can have a maximum depth of 150mm, but there are some situations where the angle grinder body may limit the depth.
