Lmao she didn’t “need” to teach her kid this, you are statistically 30 times more likely to be stuck by lightning than to be involved in a school shooting, in 2020 there where 10 US school shootings resulting in atleast one death. Although over 300 people per year have been struck by lightning. This isn’t a necessity and it’s fear mongering

I mean, even using the heavily bloated statistic which includes suicides in parking lots amongst other things, theres only 380ish school shootings a year and there are 100k schools in america, these shootings rarely go over six dead and the schools I’ve been in have had atleast 300 students so I’m feeling pretty good on my odds but even so I always keep a first aid kit on me for the much more real scenario of a car crash or someone getting hurt in physical exercise.

The worst part is the statistics. I did some calculations and found something scary: You have about a 12% chance of experiencing a school shooting in your lifetime, and about 1.5% per year. This is if you live in God blessed country of the US of A
Many people compare the odds of a shooter to the odds of winning the lottery. This should put it into perspective.
Your odds of going through a school shooting in your life is the same as rolling 8 dice and getting the number 6 on all.
Winning the lottery is like rolling 2 300,000 sided die and getting 6 on both.

I go to high school and every day I'm just like "Please don't let me die today. I'd rather die by my AP Physics class than by a school shooting." This is literally what I'm thinking on my bus every day. Everytime people are talking about school shootings, they will talk about how to stay safe from them. Nobody talks about how to prevent them. Be kind to everyone, include everyone. If no one feels alone, left out, hated, unwanted, or just bad in general, this problem will go away. Be kind to everyone, you neve know what someones is going through.

As a teacher what have you done professionally to prepare yourself for this? Have you lobbied for training and arming volunteers at your school? After all these shooters aren't looking for a gunfight they're looking for fame. Have you bothered to take a stop the bleed class? Maybe a class could be put on for faculty and staff at the school after hours. How many tourniquets are at your school? Has anybody practiced with those. I mean it doesn't take an active shooter for a student to have an arterial bleed. 🤷🏼‍♂️
Several years ago I took an active shooter course in Nashville Tennessee and what I learned was if your response to an active shooter event is to call 911 expect between 20 and 30 casualties. I also learned most people killed in an active shooter event are shot in their hiding place or where they "locked down"
This information comes from a study of the history of active shooter events since 1999
Finally what I learned was that the school lockdowns which are so popular with school districts around the country always work just fine until a shooter actually shows up
      Run fight hide

They were not letting us have our phones to tell parents I love them or what was happening. My teacher is Spanish completely so she didn’t know what lock down was. I had to tell her because I was closest to her at the time. I was asking to go to the restroom. I don’t know if any shots were made but I do know that there was a gun and multiple threats. It is the 5 week of school. We have school tomorrow. My mom which is a well known phycologist, just talked to me and told me that this is not at all normal. I was shaking all day today and she told me “ it is your large leg muscles wanting to run or hide” this is super smart to make these back packs or even maybe clothes to wear. But it is so stupid and scary that we have too. I am a 13 year old kid and I am scared to go BACK TO MY OWN SCHOOL, lucky no one got hurt but this was the most scared that I have ever been. My father is a teacher at my school. He teaches 7th grade I am in 8th grade, the grades are separated so i didn’t know if he was ok. Since 8th graders are not allowed to go into the 7th grade hall with a good reason or a slip. I couldn’t go see my dad. We continued our school day all day. It’s debatable, the shooter may be in there but if the police say “ is anyone in there?” and they say, “ I am help.” or like, “yes but the shooter is in here.” That’s kind of smart because police got quick timing they go through a lot of training to do calls like school shootings and shooters may or may not.

I was in a lockdown at school a decade ago: so I was in elementary school and I was in class chatting with my friends Thomas and Raymond both of whom were in my class (despite me being smart) and I remember doing my class work and I just wrote something down when this announcement came on the loudspeaker telling us that we were officially on lockdown so the teacher told us to hide under our desk so we did and while we were hiding we were making plans and I came up with the idea to throw a desk if anyone came in our classroom so we waited for about 45- an hour until this other announcement came on the loudspeaker telling us that lockdown was over and to return to our normal and my dad (who was outside the door the entire time) came to pick me up

Ngl, recently since school has started again, I've been keeping my eyes out for ANY good hiding spot in case of a shooting. I've been outside of my class when we had a lockdown for something that was happening outside of the school, and I actually thought it was something INSIDE the school. Luckily, I was going to the nurse for a low blood sugar and they told me what was happening. Here's some good hiding spots if you're in school and there's a lockdown for a shooter but you can't get in a class : behind the counter in the lunch line (if you can get in), behind a curtain of the stage (if you have one), janitors closet, under the bleachers, inside/ in between gym supplies (mats, piles of hula hoops, washing machines, etc), lockers, cabinets, any small space. DON'T HIDE IN THE BATHROOM UNLESS YOU HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE!

I've read the crime stats there. Your kids aren't safe anywhere. These shootings only happen in gun free zones anyway. Everyone is presumed armed in my community. As a woman I can and have walked safely to the store in the dark. We have armed police in the schools and reinforced doors to protect our kids. It's called being responsible for own safety instead of depending on the government.

Though that was mostly a guesstimate,it's still far to high of a chance for children ending up in a dangerous situation, while in the "safety" of school grounds. My point is,it's possible. It's not die in a car crash odds, but it isn't a 1 in a million shot etheir.
