Hi Jean, Lots of orchids can grow under lights! Including Oncidiums. They need a drop in temps at night to bloom, and you have to watch the bloom spike doesn't fry under the light. I would use two -four 32 watt bulbs, 4 foot shop lights are ideal. Grow the plants close to the bulbs as you can with out any thing touching. I turn the greenhouse into a grow room- greenhouse in the winter with lots of lights. Darn cloudy Pacific Northwest...
Loved the comparison of pots. Would love to find those 2nd choice plastic basket with nice holes. Easy to use a hot tool to put holes in that nice wide area to hang them. If anyone knows, please advise - will check back occasionally to see if any response. Not sure Brad answers these old posts.
Hi Theodore, thanks for subscribing! I do use coconut husk as well sometimes. It stays light and airy. I'd love to see your orchids, why not go to my homepage here on UA-cam. On my banner that says Brad's Greenhouse find the Facebook link and post them there! Brad
Hello Brad...Nice little video. Interesting to see how you do things there in the states. I am from Mystic Ct. but have retired to Thailand. Over the past three years I have been collecting and propagating many orchid types...OMG...hahahaaa My wife and I have over 300 now of many species. My Oncidiums are all in coconut husk holders. We use chopped husk for planting and a bit of ground husk to retain moisture. Wish I could send you some pics. You could use them in your next video...All the best
I wish this wasn’t such an old post to be able to get a look at what it looks like a couple years later. Going from such a packed wet media to a pretty dry mix. Especially from sphagnum to bark, which is much drier environment. Going from bark to sphagnum moss I don’t find as much an issue except you have to make sure you repot in around 18 months. I just find moss becomes so acidic if you do media pour through tests. My experience , maybe not others.
Wow, thank you very much for sharing this video. Now I am inspired to get an Oncidium...At the moment I have Phals, Dendrobium and Cattleya's..Trying to let them thrive at home where I live (the Netherlands)..Learning a lot from the internet..
Hi Brad, I often watch your videos and collect useful info about orchids. Thanks a lot. Hope you will show more and more videos in future. Good Luck on your growing. Amitha
Thank you. I am waiting till spring to do my repotting. I have a few that looks like all roots. I will know at repotting time. It is too cold now. I have one that the roots wrap around the top of pot twice. They are so long. Pot is so small.
I was looking for one at the supermarket at the flower/plant section, but it was soled out. But did not have time to go to a garden centre...but I will defenitely try one...and thanks I hope to be succesfully as you. No doubt about it, because I learn a lot from you..
Nice video, my oncidiums appear to always dry too quickly, I see you incorporated spagh moss, think I will do the same. Video is quite educational. Thanks alot.
You have wonderfully informative videos! How would you repot if your orchid was aggressively growing out of its pot and creating new little plants along the way? Thank you!
I use 100% spagnum moss and my oncidiums roots go CRAZY for it I almost have to repot it every year. When ever I repot I typically go 2-4 inches bigger then the pot before
Wow so how big of a pot are you up to now? Just repotted my first oncidium the roots were packed and growing wildly out of the pot. I had to cut some just to get it into a pot and I repotted on sphagnum.
@@ellerystickle3125 do you really think it is possible for him to answer every comment comprehensively on a video let alone one this old? He created a huge body of information. It is a fantastic resource.
I actually loved the close ups when you use one hand! What kind of light do your oncidiums receive? I keep mine in a south window (by my kitchen sink) that is very shaded. It's more like a north window. What do you think? The leaf color is a light green. Your videos are the easiest to understand on you tube! Thanks again! :)
Just looking at your Oncidium, and it's amazing root system. I say it was doing quit well in that pure sphagnum it was in. Tell me friend...do you still have this plant under your care? Thanks
Hey Brad, Martin here. I recently received an Oncidium Orchid about a month ago and it smelled awesome, almost like roses. I cut the spike off yesterday b/c the flowers were spent and today I repotted it according to this video. However I did place the plant with new growth to the middle of the pot and old growth against the pot, it was in the same condition as the one in this video accept it had long roots outside the pot and in the pot. They are not as white as yours but I left them. There are a lot of them. Where is the best place for it? I have two windows in my room, one on the South wall close to the east wall and one on the east wall close to the south wall, it gets very bright in my room if all blinds are open. All other windows are on the east wall and one on the North wall. How should it face, new growth away from light or towards light? Thanks in advance.
thanks so much for your videos... one thing though, would love to see exactly how you do every step, could you maybe put down the camera on a nearby table?
Thank you for the lovely video. I have what I think are two variations of Oncidium Orchids. But I am not certain. The one has a very very large elongated pseudo-bulb, and the other a much smaller pseudo-bulb. Also slightly elongated. I have inherited these two plants, so don't even know what colours the blooms are. The leaves are elongated like the orchid in your video. Please can you help me identify these Brad. Thank you. Elaine from South Africa
Brad it would help if you'd get a tripod so that you don't have to try to balance the plant with one hand. Some of the sections that I wanted to see were when you went off camera because you needed to use both hands
Hi Brad, is it possible to successibly grow orchids under lights? i am running out of windows & need some other place to put my orchids. they are so addictive. I'm so green with envy when ever I see your greenhouse!! tour vidios are great! keep them coming. I'd like to see one on dividing an overgrown sharry baby. THANKS! oh! oh! I ment your videos not tour videos.LOL
Hello Brad, nice bunch of videos on your channel, i like it! I'd just wanted to ask you after you 've repootted the orchid, do you water it or not? thank you and keep filming!! greetings from new caledonia!
Here’s hoping you would reply to an old video. My question is: can I repot an Colmanara that i bought 2 months ago, 7 pseudobulbs, just finished blooming but already spiking (already 6 inches long) and is also beginning to produce 2 new growths at the edge of the pot? I don’t want to disturb the spike but TWO new growths with their roots out of the pot makes me nervous just thinking about it... help!

I have a sherry baby and I had to separate it and re-pot there in the pots just like you have but they are not doing well and I have done all I know to do this is the first type of orchid I have ever had I have all the other types vanda eta., but I have watched over this one the other two are doing fine but the main one has lost all leaves and the bulbs are there and full and green roots look good will it go dormant? HELP!!!! thank you

Lori Kartowidjojo I know it's too late for your plant, but for other people : Lol no, they cut the roots that went out of the pot to give it a ''clean'' look and when you asked about the plant's health, they came-up with some silly excuse. hello. I've had my sherry baby for a year an i bough it with blooming flowers but this year it has not bloom but its growing bulbs like crazy so far it has 7 bulbs not fully grown, but there growing very closely together. Should i repot it and split it in 2 or leave it as it is?
Darwin Tra it never hurts to repot it if it has been a year or two. Number one reason Orchids don't bloom is not enough light. try to increase the lighting by 10-20%
Hi Clement Yes I always water right after re potting. It settles the media into place. Some say not to but I've never had any problems. Thanks for watching!

Brad, Besides the moss & perlight, can, you use the standard orchid mix that includes bark & charcoal for repotting or, do you need bark only??

Hi John, Happy New Year! Sorry for the lack of Tri-pod in the video. It is from 2012, I have a very nice one now 😉
Love using clear plastic pots w slits. Since mine are outdoors in bright shade I have to deal w algae forming. Use hydrogen peroxide for it.
Thanks Brad. Do you water after repotting????
Thanks for the tutorial. Get a tripod so you can work hands free. It's less distracting

Hello Brad, after repotting it. When would you water orchids the first time ?
Hi Brad! Some say not to water onc for 1-2 weeks after repotting, but that seems too long to me, given their thinner roots. What do you think?
How do you water it and how often and what temperature do they like inside the house
Thank you. Having trouble to get my orchid to bloom
Please share a link from your video, how to water orchid ???
Will it hurt if you lose a few roots in the cleaning process?
The clear pots, where to purchase?

Can I use vermiculite?
some people do , some don't. I think it breaks down a little sooner.
ok, thanks :)
