Thank you so much for this video. I went to You Tube to find this kind of advice. We have a beautiful Cymbidium that my father named. He was a very well known orchid grower in Geelong and passed away nearly 8 years ago. We have kept it alive and have had a few spikes, but it really need repotting. Now I feel confident to repot it myself. Thank you!
I coat the inside of my clay pots with boiled linseed oil and let it dry. It is waterproof and keeps the pot from losing water through the sides. Clay aesthetic with the performance of plastic.
Just what I need, have a big very crowded pot of once very large beautiful cymbidiums. Mine is worse than yours and the realestate agents gardener flailed most of the green off. Drove me to buy a house quickly. Now to recover my poor cymbidiums.
Mine has bigger leaves and big flowers tho after the dreadful flailing three spikes of smaller flowers were produced. Oh dear. It bloomed beautifully in the past.
Mathew! What a lucky duck to get new orchids for free. And enough to eventually share with others. You have a kind heart rescuing them from their cramped quarters! Lots of work repotting those massive old boys! I’m impressed with your knife and meat mallet skills as well! Always entertaining and I’m learning a lot. EVen though my two Cymbidiums are tiny still, Some day I might need to pull this episode up again and use it myself. I can’t wait to see yours bloom! I have to say I am very envious of your climate! Being able to leave most of your orchids outside all year has got to be wonderful!
Thank you for watching! Yes - though I was recently in tropical Australia thinking hmmmmm....wouldn't it be nice to live here!! I guess the climatic grass is ALWAYS greener!
Great video. I have inherited a lot of orchids from my Dad that my Mum can’t look after fully. There is a cymbidium that needs some attention. Your video has given me the courage to try to repot and try with the old bulbs. Thankyou and fingers crossed.
I have a huge cymbidium to rescue that was my mum’s. I’m more confident after watching your video to give it a go after it finishing flowering. Thank you
This was very helpful. I inherited 25 cymbidiums from father in law. Had no clue and they had not been cared for a few years. I divided and repotted. Lots of bugs ran out and it was messy. Didn’t understand about the old pseudo bulbs and initially threw them out. But read something that stopped me and watching you I’m glad that I still have some. I’ve had very few flowers but enough to keep me motivated and I now know that I didn’t do anything horribly wrong and another year may well result in blooms. Btw I used an axe to break them up but they didn’t look much different to your genteel carving knife method! Thank your for this very useful info.
What a brute of a cymbidium. It's a job no one likes - so hard! Can't wait to see what the flowers look like when they eventually bloom. Also can't wait to see the blooms on the two Joss plants that your friend is waiting to flower. Beautiful house, by the way and what a shame to think of it in apartments. Thanks for a great video.
I had a 15 year old cymbidium and almost 2 years ago, I did the same “chopping” work you just did. Gave one piece to a friend, kept 2 pieces and they all bloomed the following year🤗. Unfortunately, I didn’t know I could repot the old pseudobulbs😩. Thanks a lot😍
This was an awesome video. My dad loved orchids! I have the last one of his and it is in desperate need of repotting. I live in Southern California, USA and it is very hot! I now feel like I will be able to repot it. I have had it for about 6 years and it used to bloom a very pretty yellow bloom. No blooms recently and it loosing leaves. It needs a repot and rescue!
This certainly brings back memories. We’ve done many a cymbidium repot that required a bread knife or even a small axe. I have two back bulbs from one of my plants and although they are growing well, I think it will be another year or two before we see any bloom spikes. I truly admire you for taking on this job, it’s a big one and hopefully is appreciated by the owner.
Thank you so much Matthew just as I was tearing my hair out as to how and when to repot my husband’s orchids. It’s Spring in Melbourne and I notice a few of them have started blooming. Look forward to getting more advice on these orchids at the end of their flowering. I feel confident now to care for them thanks to your excellent advice.
So glad that I found your channel! You are such a great presenter!! A joy to watch - you keep my attention. Your descriptions/evaluations of this plant and its divisions are very succinct. I learned a great deal about this type of orchid from your work. (I have warm growing cymbidiums as I live in southeast Florida USA.)
I uncovered my mothers old ones when I cleaned out the back yard after she died. I have been wondering what to do with them for 5 years. I can't wait to get my hands on them now and rescue them.
Wow thanks so much for this video! I have divided quite a few massive old ones in the last few years including one that also broke its terracotta pot. Not all have done well unfortunately, just realised I’ve been repotting in pots that are definitely too large! I also left a lot of the old dead roots on so maybe that wasn’t helpful. I still have one more massive inherited pot that I’ve been putting off dividing. But now I have a new confidence in the task ahead! Will get to it after it has flowered. Can’t wait to see a follow up video. Thank you!!
Thanks for watching! Yes - the new pot ideally will give them 2-3 years worth of room but no more - I was overly generous with my first re-pot three years ago and it's just in spike for the first time now!
Thanks! This video was just the info I needed. I have a few seedlings. I grow in southern Ontario Canada- indoors with no extra lighting or humidity and outside when it’s above 12C. Our winters are brutal so it’s only from June to mid September.

Brilliant Mathew, such a joy to follow & what a wonderful find for you ❤. loved your commentary on the conquer - divide & repot ...Cant wait to see the wonderful specimen in bloom 👏👏👏 👍
Hi Mathew I too live in Melbourne and got 4 orchids about 4x or more the size of the one's you got. They desperately need re-potting. I got them from my elderly friends estate after she passed away. I'd love to send you some photos of I could. Thank you for your Video as it has helped me very very much. ❤
Thank you Mathew l have a very large cymbidium must be at least 10 years old in a large terra cotta pot it was given to me,because it hadn’t flowered in some time lam a gardener by trade but had little to do with orchids your vid has been helpful. Now retired only working at home.
Hello from Scotland! I'm glad I just stumbled on your channel. I wanted a Cymbidium for ages. and finally got one. Now, I'm terrified I kill it, as it's so different to other orchids, and really looks a bit strange. Many thanks for all your hints.
Hi there - I'm putting all these great tips to use and just might get flower spikes next July/August (Sydney). So thanks. Btw, I just heard on the radio this week that rocks or crocks at the bottom of the pot for drainage have now been scientifically proven not to make any difference whatsoever to plant health.
Thank you for this video. Also in Melbourne (up on Mt Dandenong) rescuing several large old cymb’s. Just wondering what’s the purpose of the fungi you sprinkled in the potting mix? These old heirlooms I’m rescuing have never know such tlc... You have turned me on to orchids even though they’ve never been my thing-actually really fascinating plants!!! Thank you so much. 😊
Thanks for watching! Mycorrhizal fungus is found in all soil and there are many many types. They develop symbiotic relationships with plants; in exchange for energy from photosynthesis they provide plants access to the water and nutrients in soil and help develop better root systems. Orchids in particular have a complex relationship Mycorrhizal fungi as it is essential to the germination of their seeds. So adding a dash of horticultural Mycorrhizal fungi to your pots can't hurt the plant but can really benefit it!
I love cymbidium! Cymbidiums? Cymbidii? Lol! Anyway, I'm going to take the plunge and buy one. Where I'd like to keep it doesn't go below 58 degrees (14 C) , in winter, and is in an East facing window with a sheer curtain. I'm in Pennsylvania, US. I hope i don't kill it 🤞 What do you think? I can also add a humidifier if need be.
Good luck! I wouldn't worry about a humidifier inside unless your heating is very drying. But I would keep it outside from spring to fall if you can, before the cold nights set in: dappled light.
Huge neglected cymbidiums seem to follow me home. I have a healthy crop of back bulbs with new growth, and many of the plants I divided last summer are dining into bloom. I suspect my climate in the San Francisco Bay Area is not unlike yours, if a bit cooler in summer.
So thankful I found your channel, 🙏❤ I have some rescue ones in similar condition, these are in large yet split plastic pots , and although it's now winter though, can I repot and place it in a west/NW direction in TAS? They are very pot bound and in need of love ,my grandmother use to use polystyrene foam in the potting mixture( and old broken pots/rocks in the base for stability) ,I also found one that has a seed pod on it as well , I don't know what you would recommend for that 🙏
I would wait until spring to repot - they'll be fine. And not much you can do with the seedpod really. It will burst at some point but the chances of anything germinating are almost nil - seed germination is a very complex process. You can also just cut the the whole spike off. Good luck with them all!
Except you wouldn't be able to leave with them! You will be able to buy seedling flasks from Australia though and have them shipped if you're game for that!
Oooo I have a Sarah Jean. I was hoping it would’ve gotten bigger. I bought it as a seedling but it was beat up quite a bit, pests got in there and then it stunted it out. It’s been about 2 years and I’m just now getting a new pseudo bulb out of 2.
Hi Matthew, I just stumbled across your videos, and I love them! I have just been gifted a cymbidium orchid and I am a true amateur. I was wondering if I can share some photos of my one to ask for some help? We're also from Melbourne but our cymbidium will be living in Trentham (our weekender). Would love to pick your brain if I could! Thanks, Nicky
Thank you so much! I have a very old cymbidium that was languishing in an old pot filled with weeds, when I finally took it out it had zero roots but a several firm pseudobulbs. I took your advice and plopped it into some nice bark mix and let it be. I checked it this morning and there's a bunch of new baby roots and three new growths! Thank you so much! edit: I forgot to mention, that here in California usually cymbidiums are quite large but the pseudobulbs of this cymbidium is pretty small and the leaves are fairly thin. Each pseudobulb is perhaps as wide as my thumb. The bundle of 14 psedobulbs fits in the palm of my hand. I've never gotten it to bloom. Any suggestions?
Oh what a great story! Well there are two basic types of hybrid cymbidium: large ones with upright spikes and more compact plants with pendular spikes. Yours is perhaps the latter? As to blooming....basic care is: keep tightly potted + dappled light (bit stronger in winter) + cool winter seasonal change to stimulate flowering + let almost dry between waterings + fertilise in growing season (spring/summer). Good luck!
It is mycorrhizal fungi: biostim.com.au/shop/myco-gold/?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw5v2wBhBrEiwAXDDoJaJ69NokK2lnHsmIEfaJxVHhP3ZhzP_NtdmQ68li4YXDX0Ygw-DnbRoCfooQAvD_BwE

Hi mate. Loved your video Cymbidium Rescue. I'm trying to revive one my mum had , who has passed away now, can I pls send you photos of its roots etc to see if you think it'd reviveable? I'm based at Sunny C Qld. Thanks muchly Stuart
Hi Stuart - even an old back bulb can produce new growths so I'm sure it's worth a go. You can send me an image through Instagram: @matthewlucasplantlover if you want.
Sorry if this has been mentioned, and i missed it, but if i provide drainage and the appropriate soil, can i plant these in the ground? (In melb) Thanks so much.
I think yes and yes...there are certainly plants out in gardens that I've seen doing really well in Melbourne. Drainage would be key as you mentioned so perhaps an elevated bed or even trying to replicate their natural habitat under trees in the nooks of the root mass? Good luck!
What size pot do you recommend for the single bulbs? Great info. I have 8 ginormous pots of a friend's mother's collection. They had no home after an estate sale, and now they're mine. Im sure they haven't been touched in 10 years, so it will be a huge task, starting wth how to get them out of their pots (,they had to be moved on a dolly! )❤
Thanks for your videos Matthew. Very helpful as well as entertaining. Just wondering if I can keep cymbidiums on bark in a glass jar/vase like I do with phalenopsis. Or must they be planted in a pot? Thanks
Enjoyed your video thanks.....please would you tell me what the black marks on the repotted large orchid are as I have the same on some of my cyms and I'm worried about them. I live in Johannesburg South Africa and the weather is very similar to yours so your information is very helpful.
Thanks for finding me! Just old leaves I think. They will discolour and show their age before dropping and leaving the old bulbs bare. The important thing is that the new leaves have no discolouration - if they do then something is up.
Great video. I have been given a very similar rootbound pot of cymbidium. I've had it for a couple of years. Now I'm getting around to repotting it. Is it the a good time of year to do it? I'm in Southern Australia.
Is there an update about these? I have a giant plant with five flower spikes, and no space for it in the colder room where I've kept it for a few years during winter. Can I keep it in a warmer room during winter? It is about 22 C in that room, and it has enough light. Thank you!
Hi there - hmm - not sure about that much warmth as I’ve never grown them like that. You’ll just have to experiment and see how the plant responds! Good luck!
great video, I got some Cymbidiums damaged by cold last year, one grew back some leaves, but the others have bulbs still hard, but no leaves, and as far as I can see, no roots, hope they will grow this spring. I love fragrant orchids, can you recommend any Cymbidium species or variety for strong fragrance, in your own experience?
Thanks for watching - not really. The fragrant one I have is a no ID hybrid and the fragrance isn't exactly....floral! Best to find a seller who specialises in Cymbidiums, or your local orchid group and ask around. Good luck with you survivors!
Well this has been educational! I have some big cymbidiums desperately in need of repotting but have been terrified of what to do with the massive root ball. So great to get a step by step guide! By the way how's your orchid database coming along?
Hi I have a cymbidium. It was in bloom when it was given me. Yellow , white with some pink. About 5 years now. Never bloomed since. I guess I don’t know how to take care of it. I am planning to repot it. It is still alive, I ignored it a lot. I have kept it on my front patio porch. All these years. Watered it once a week. Soaking it. South west corner of patio. What should it be in??? Shade, sun, morning sun or late day sun????? 😮 It is spring here in Mexico. Days 90, & 68 at night. Did I water it too much. I always used left over fertilizer water from water my other orchids. I was planning of use lava rocks!!!!!! It seems to be in a lot of rocks. Till I repot, I’ll fine out what is below. The girl that gave it to me said not to throw away the old bulbs. So I never have. It is in sad shape. I think the pot I got is way too big. Maybe I will get a small er Terra Cara pot & put inside. Please give me advice!!!!!! Paula, 71, retired in Chapala, Mexico .
Hi there - the video you've commented on should give you all the re-potting info and this one is a basic care video, good luck! ua-cam.com/video/aPNCwfrxwe8/v-deo.html
Hi Matthew, have you noticed differing results since adding mycorrhizal fungi to your mixes? Interested to hear your thoughts as I'd like to experiment.
Hi there - hard to quantify really as I've been using it from the start. But I would say with other potted plants the root systems are noticeably dense. You'd need to do a controlled experiment with two identical plants to get the answer! Good luck!
this is what my Mom does every year I find it very odd so much because love put into them but they will always root rot. There must be a better way to grow them.
I think I cover this in the video; it depends! The plants bloom once a year in spring. If you repot once those those flowers have died, and you're lucky, you might get flowers the next spring if the plant has grown well. However they can sulk and wait a year...or even two! SO it depends upon your plant.
Hi Matthew, I need to do this when temperature is warmer in NSW. Could you tell me what fungicide you use? I had some leaves turning black during long rainy summer we had. So I can maybe prevent this from happening next summer? Thanks 🙏
I'd start with with anything that's marketed for rose black spot and see if that works. And the leaves do age, discolour and drop over time so you probably only get a few years of maximum leaf health per pseudobulb before they will naturally start to look a bit ratty! Good luck!
@@helloplantlovers Thanks so much for getting back to me. I need to place my cymbidiums at the edge of the balcony to get the light they need but then they sometimes get too wet with rain. I was watching your Sarcochilus videos today. Now I think I can make them bloom! 😊
I desperately need orchid rescue, too 😢 I repotted my cymbidium and now the leaves are turning yellow. I added a recommended dose vitamin B in the water after repotting. Could it be the cause of my problem?
@@helloplantlovers They die. I'm having problems with tiny brown-colored bugs. They crawl on top of wooden barks and the leaves. I spray with neem oil twice a week, but it does not help much. Could you please help. Thanks

So I need to come to southern Australia to get my beloved cymbidiums and fly them back to Indiana, USA.
Except you wouldn't be able to leave with them! You will be able to buy seedling flasks from Australia though and have them shipped if you're game for that!
I always repot each time I buy a new orchids.
Oooo I have a Sarah Jean. I was hoping it would’ve gotten bigger. I bought it as a seedling but it was beat up quite a bit, pests got in there and then it stunted it out. It’s been about 2 years and I’m just now getting a new pseudo bulb out of 2.
Good luck! They are the more compact, pendent type.
@@helloplantlovers Are they like a mini cym? Or just a smaller sized?
Not mini by any stretch of the imagination, just more compact than the often huge standard forms! @@mexy04
Thanks for finding me! I am NO expert! But you can send images via my Instagram account: @matthewlucasplantlover
Good luck!
Hi Matthew, I didn't quite catch what you put after the slow release fertiliser in the bottom of the pot?? Thank you 😊
It is mycorrhizal fungi: biostim.com.au/shop/myco-gold/?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw5v2wBhBrEiwAXDDoJaJ69NokK2lnHsmIEfaJxVHhP3ZhzP_NtdmQ68li4YXDX0Ygw-DnbRoCfooQAvD_BwE
Great educational video, thanks Mathew. Should dead leaf ‘flakes’ be removed? I thought they encourage scale, around the bulbs.
It's always a good idea to remove old sheaths etc...but sometimes you don't! I find my Cymbidiums are quite pest resistant outside.
So interesting all down to earth information as a beginner can you please tell me more about the fungi you use thank you so much
I use this one: biostim.com.au/shop/myco-gold/?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw_e2wBhAEEiwAyFFFoxFO3KwMWdWkSMF91ODBx_P20TnEdChq4zX1UODAH1h5amQa2nem8hoCaqwQAvD_BwE Thanks for watching!
Than, you so much I learned a lot.
Thanks for watching!
Its a huge job. I use osmocote and benomyl for fungus and black spot on these critters.
Good to know!
Cymbidium orchids are my favorite type of orchids I only have one tho...
Thanks for watching!
Sorry if this has been mentioned, and i missed it, but if i provide drainage and the appropriate soil, can i plant these in the ground? (In melb)
Thanks so much.
Im sure they haven't been touched in 10 years, so it will be a huge task, starting wth how to get them out of their pots (,they had to be moved on a dolly! )❤
The smallest pot they will fit into - tight!
Thank you so much.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for your videos Matthew. Very helpful as well as entertaining. Just wondering if I can keep cymbidiums on bark in a glass jar/vase like I do with phalenopsis. Or must they be planted in a pot? Thanks
I wouldn’t! Not sure they’d love those conditions!
Ideally spring - just after it's bloomed - is best. If you have to do it now it won't hurt but if it's in spike you might loose them.
@@helloplantlovers thanks very much for the very prompt reply and for your wishes for my Cymbidiums, hope at least some will be able to recover !!!
Well this has been educational! I have some big cymbidiums desperately in need of repotting but have been terrified of what to do with the massive root ball. So great to get a step by step guide!
By the way how's your orchid database coming along?
Ha! I'm in denial - 103 so far. Still a bit to do....😬
How often do I repot my plants
@@peaceandjoyflowersgarden1674 When they need it - basically when they are bursting out of their pots.
wow!
Thanks for watching!
If you are taking back bulb divisions they must be kept absolutely dry until the new roots are well established.
I would like to ask please!
How long does it take for the plant to bloom after the orchid has been repotted
I think I cover this in the video; it depends! The plants bloom once a year in spring. If you repot once those those flowers have died, and you're lucky, you might get flowers the next spring if the plant has grown well. However they can sulk and wait a year...or even two! SO it depends upon your plant.
Hi, I’m just wondering where did you buy the micro Rizal fungi from? I’m in Melbourne too
Hi Matthew, I need to do this when temperature is warmer in NSW.
Good luck!
@@helloplantlovers I see, I’ll take a closer look at my cymbidiums. 😊Do you spray yours routinely to prevent fungus or mold from happening?
@@Gigi-pf6ik No I don't. I rarely seem to get any issues with mine; scale on one once but that's it.
@@helloplantlovers Thanks so much for getting back to me. I need to place my cymbidiums at the edge of the balcony to get the light they need but then they sometimes get too wet with rain.
I was watching your Sarcochilus videos today. Now I think I can make them bloom! 😊
@@Gigi-pf6ik Good luck!
Wow
Thanks for watching!
Hi sir. After you split them like that, how many it would take for them to bloom again ?
Hi there - depends on the plant. Sometimes they will bloom the next cycle, sometimes they might sulk and skip a year. I've known both to happen.
Terracotta breathes. Good for plants. My poor group are in horrible plastic.
Thanks for watching!
Mine took15 years to flower!!!
Goodness!!!!
I desperately need orchid rescue, too 😢 I repotted my cymbidium and now the leaves are turning yellow. I added a recommended dose vitamin B in the water after repotting. Could it be the cause of my problem?
Well old leaves will die off naturally! As long as you have green new growths you’ll be fine! Thanks for watching!
@@helloplantlovers They die. I'm having problems with tiny brown-colored bugs. They crawl on top of wooden barks and the leaves. I spray with neem oil twice a week, but it does not help much. Could you please help. Thanks
@@cathuongnguy2577 If neem oil isn't working I'd try some other insecticide.

as a general rule - new flower spikes have rounded tops and pseudobulbs come out with sharp leaf tips
Good to know!
Are you selling cymbidiam balbs
Hi there - no I'm not. Plenty of places do though so you shouldn't have any trouble finding some.

I'm taking care of my late grandfather's cymbidiums and they're over 20 years old and I'm trying very hard not to be their end.
You won't be! They're tough. Dappled light, let them dry in between waterings, cool winters; off you go! Good luck!
