@@michaelkabik1787 Michael, we come from about the same era, with icons like Hendrix, the Who, Rolling Stones, David Bowie, you name it. But I find the combination of traditional Japanese instruments and contemporary heavy metal amazing. The only thing I don't like is the audience. They react a bit reserved, like they don't like it. While at Cheap Tric they almost tear down the hall. Anyway, I think this is beyond any superlative!
Another old fart here: Im 69 as I type this, and I want to say that Jeroen expressed my own sentiments perfectly. I also agree 100% with Michael. Greetings from Denmark, Gert.
I saw them live in Dallas a few years ago at the House of Blues, they were fucking amazing and they definitely made everyone there fans after their performance. They literally brought so much emotion and rock that the crowd cheered for a encore and they came back out and played 3 more songs before finally ending their show. It was an amazing night and I was so glad to have seen them or i would have never discovered their talent.
My name is James c. Bono, i’m 73 years old, I have been listening to your music for years now. I greatly thank you. I’ve never seen you but on UA-cam here in California. My best friend/brotherOld-school rock ‘n’ roll Neil Young. Thanks you’re fantastic too

It might be that the Japanese instruments hit those pentatonic notes, and the western instruments go for octatonic. I don't know shit about music, but I recall that's a major difference b/t Eastern and Western canon.
*******HATS OFF AND KUDOS TO THE LIVE SOUND ENGINEER!!! Getting All instruments to Clarity and well balanced with multiple instruments is a feat in it's own!!*******
i love that you can hear each instrument. nothing is super drowned out, and theyre given their moment to shine. even if they didnt, the crowd clearly felt it. i would love to see this in person, had i the opportunity.
Only given that no great European musicians participate. Imagine a band like Nightwish, it would take like 100% of the vote competing against what usually goes to Eurovision, and it would beat Japan as well.
Maybe he's mastered circular breathing? Not sure, but I've played a similar wind instrument before and circular breathing helps a lot especially when you're playing long pieces.
I'm almost sure the shakuhachi flute guy is just dancing and pretending to play a pre-recorded track. There's no way - i play a little shakuhachi and the flute has to be positioned perfectly against the lip to get any sound at all, the way he's waving his head and flute all over the place would definitely cause him to miss some notes even if he wasn't dancing and jumping all over the place. There's definitely some pre-production and studio multitracking magic happening behind the scenes.
I've watched this dozens of times, and it finally audibly clicked with me how damn well the koto and shamisen slot in with the modern rock instruments. They just have a unique sound and percussion to them that is neither overwhelming nor is overwhelmed when all the instruments are playing. One can imagine any number of bands of a variety of styles where adding this sound would just...work. It's such a treat when something new and interesting comes together like this.
Agreed! Didn’t know Japan had shredders like this - fantastic energy. The sound techs would be billionaires too, if they ran concerts in the US market - we never get such clean audio from rock/metal concerts here.
There's something suspicious about a lot of these gigs - a lot of them have glowsticks or something, but they're always evenly spaced throughout the crowd. Makes the gig look fake to me :\
@@dysfuncti0_art415 Not to dismiss your point, because in a typical Wagakki Band concert the audience is expected to be well behaved. But in concerts of bands like Babymetal or Maximum the Hormone, that would be different story.
@@maxek46 It depends on the band playing. Some bands have crowds that can go crazy like Maximum the Hormone. Other bands like Wagakki here and Ikimono Gakari tend to have calmer crowds.
Never heard of this band before, I won't forget them. This was one of the best things to come out of Japan , hell out of Asia in many years. Never heard traditional Japanese instruments played like this before, seriously badass.
My aunt played koto, the harp-like instrument (wow does it have 20 strings? Never seen it before) placed flat - had she been alive she'd be shocked to hear this!
When you don't know how you ended up some where on the internet, that means you have spent to much time on the internet. I don't know either with this video. Some times it takes control and we just become zombies. Time for me to go socialize with some real people face to face. Best of luck to you🙂
The path to enlightenment begins with the first step. Like you, I tripped over Wagakki Band by accident. Would that all of my misadventures should turn out so f**king awesome !
The algorithm brought me here and I am actually fucking blown away by this performance. Like I haven't been this blown away by a group.... Ever I think.
It's interesting how people are still surprised, that classical (or traditional) instruments fit so well into heavy metal. Symphonic pieces and Operas are often heavy metal like. And Electric guitars don't sound too diferent from Cellos and Violas...
that's because you barely listened a symphony in your life. There is a lot of classical pieces that will blow your mind as metal do and you don't know.. just you stick in these kind of melodies that not go far from three chords....just go far as you can as Pachebel with Cannon (I recommend variations from George Winston), or from this century music from Ennio Morricone, try to hear all the music of one classical comp, and then do your opion.
Some metal bands just straight up use electric violins in their solos instead of guitars. Like the band Turisas for example, and it works amazingly well.
Espetacular! Lindo , lindo , lindo.
The lead guitarist is all over those harmonics, I love it. But the shamisen is INCREDIBLE. I could listen to that girl solo for an hour -- the tune she lays down is gorgeous and the speed of her picking in that little bit before she hands off at 2:43 is especially insane. Maybe the most impressive thing, though, is how many moving pieces they've got and yet they make it all work, and work *well*. They have got a LOT going on, but it all fits together with the precision of an orchestra. Crazy!
First time hearing this band, and they immediately kill it with one of the most beautiful melodies I heard in the decade. I think I became an instant fan.
Vote for them siesta-tokyo.com/article/439086791.html Search for their name in kanji 和楽器バンド There's 3 major points that was pointed out by event organizers for the event. And one of it is very clear, "represent Japan". And I don't think there's anyone else has deeper roots of Japan arts more than them. Anyway, Hatsune Miku currently at the top of the votes.
This shows that music is just an expression of what everyone felt inside, and turned it into art. Props to these people, for being unique in their music genre.
You just have to love the joy and energy these people have and give to their audience. Tradition and modern music all combined together make this band one of the best I ever listened to.
I hope my neighbours a few blocks away enjoyed this as much as I did. The musicians were one thing, but the sound technicians who pulled this off were amazing. Everything was crystal clear, no matter how it was miced or amped. This is the future of Japan- young musicians taking old instruments and traditions and turning out pure magic like they're on fire.
I feel so bad that both Waggaki and Babymetal won't have a chance to perform at the 2020 Olympics this year. Probably would have been the greatest live performances at any major event in history.

It happened to be a pure coincidence that I came across this Japanese band, and I'm so happy about that. I'm normally not that fond of loud music, let alone metal. But this is... I just don't know! It touches my soul, it has conquered me. I am almost 70 years of age and I'm proud to say that these Japanese completely 'wrapped' me. This ain't music, nor metal or traditional Japanesemusic; this is amazing and universal art! All the more I play this song, the greater my desire to hear it over and over again!

I envy the people who watched this live. I bet the goosebumps lasted a week long

I caught their live show in San Francisco a few years back. Damn fine show.

It sounds extremely unique, and it provides both amazing solo and backing.

Epic lungs on that guy
He does the jumping splits in some songs as well :D

Another instrument thwt fits well with modern rock is the morin khuur
That's also the sign that there is probably, somewhere in there, at least one dedicated sound engineer who did an awesome job.
Every time they added a traditional instrument they kicked it up a notch.
New notches had to be made for them because something this powerful had not previously existed
My jaw just dropped on the floor.
Stunning band!
Agreed! Didn’t know Japan had shredders like this - fantastic energy. The sound techs would be billionaires too, if they ran concerts in the US market - we never get such clean audio from rock/metal concerts here.
my jaw is walking to japan
Japan concert culture seems so respectful of the artists.
I've heard interviews where bands playing in Japan thought they weren't playing well because the audience was so well behaved lol
There's something suspicious about a lot of these gigs - a lot of them have glowsticks or something, but they're always evenly spaced throughout the crowd. Makes the gig look fake to me :\
@@maxek46 lol they just not jumping all over each other. They like personal space

My aunt played koto, the harp-like instrument (wow does it have 20 strings? Never seen it before) placed flat - had she been alive she'd be shocked to hear this!
Their Senbonzakura MV was pretty popular on the internet too, very beautiful and joyful.

It's interesting how people are still surprised, that classical (or traditional) instruments fit so well into heavy metal. Symphonic pieces and Operas are often heavy metal like. And Electric guitars don't sound too diferent from Cellos and Violas...
this is totally japanese nightwish
that's because you barely listened a symphony in your life.
@@Abbathshin or maybe you could listen to something like Opeth...
Some metal bands just straight up use electric violins in their solos instead of guitars. Like the band Turisas for example, and it works amazingly well.
Schostakowitsch my dudes, pure Metal with neither distortion, nor electric instruments.
Crazy!
