Wagakki Band is one of the best Japanese groups out there. They combine traditional instruments and vocal styles with modern rock, metal, jazz, and more. All eight members are master level musicians; and their lead singer, the very elegant Yuko Suzuhana, may be the best female Japanese vocalist I have heard. Wagakki Band is the only other Japanese group that comes anywhere close to BabyMetal in international popularity. The video for their song Senbonzakura has more views than Gimme Chocolate. They are even better live, as their stage shows are musical extravaganzas that rival the very best BabyMetal concerts.
Yuko actually falls third for me. The two above her are Fuki (Unlucky Morpheus, Doll$box, Light Bringer, Fuki Commune) and Kuroneko (Onmyou-za). Check em out.
@@Frogmonkey095 Fuki would be high on my list as well, and both her and Kuroneka certainly have powerful voices. However, what sets Yuko above for me is her ability to transition in and out of traditional shigin and modern vocals so effortlessly.

Your pronunciation of the band name is very good. "Wa" means "Japanese" and "gakki" means "instruments". Likewise, "wagyu" means "Japanese beef/cattle", "washi" = "Japanese paper", "washoku" = "Japanese cuisine", etc. "Wa" is 和 in kanji.
@@MetalGuitarTimo "Wa" is just the English transliteration. Japanese has LOTS of homonyms; like their, there, and they're in English. In Japanese, they use different symbols for it. The topic particle pronounced "wa" is は. Kanji can have multiple different pronunciations depending on context. 和 can be pronounced "wa"but also several other ways; it means Japanese style or peace. 輪 is pronounced "wa," and usually means ring, like a ring on your finger or similar. 把, 羽, and 話 can likewise be pronounced "wa." Japanese writing, from the perspective of a native English speaker, really complicated.
If you watch carefully, twice during Akatsuki no Ito, the drummer (Wabasi) on the modern set breaks two (2) drum sticks, tosses them over his shoulder (and the gong) without missing a lick when he picks up his backup drum sticks.
And yes, the glow sticks called ""Cyalume"" are a MUST during japanese events, often used as specific coreography by the fans, normally during Idol events but not only :D and there are dancers too that use them and they are CRAZY...
have been in Japan for work, many times from 2000 until 2019, and being a big fan of music, I went to see all the possible concerts of Japanese bands of any musical genre. In Japan there is a millennial and very strong musical tradition, especially in percussion, in fact, there are countless schools to learn to play the drums of Japanese tradition, and many schools for Japanese instruments such as shamisen, a 3 or 4 string instrument completely without keys and very difficult to use. Contrary to what happens in the western world, in Japan if you have not done a school, you do not even try to do one thing, this happens for everything, it is part of the Japanese mentality, you cannot cook ramen if you have not had the approval of a master, this generates that in japan the quality of the professionals is incredible, especially in music, if you go to Japan you will be able to listen to incredible bands that play jazz, rock, pop, any type of music, many of these with great influences from the Western music but many others who manage to mix traditional Japanese music with the various genres of Western music, this can create truly incredible atmospheres for the listener. In any case, the average level of Japanese musicians is above any Western musician, simply because of the mentality and pursuit of perfection typical of the Japanese people. So in conclusion, I can tell you that soon you could find Japanese bands that play so that it may seem even absurd, I give you the example of Akane Hirose, she has studied music for years but she has studied the trombone and the violin it seems to me, then she decided to learn the drums and went to study with great masters for only 4 years and now she is the greatest rock drummer of today and maybe she will end up on the list of great all-time. the only real and big problem of Japanese musicians is that the continuous study can drag them into a state of lack of creativity and imagination, forcing them to create music which in the end is only an exhibition of technical ability. There are few Japanese bands that manage to maintain true creativity and a great soul in their music, one of them is certainly Band MaId and Wagakki Band, but I must tell you that if you go to see the concerts in the end you will think that Band-Maid is the best that you can find, most of the Japanese bands are exaggerated in the exposure of the technique and are then boring to listen to in an entire concert, I wanted to write this for some time because I listened to all the concerts of the latest Japanese bands and as I am also a hobby musician I can tell you that in Japan they have a great technique but very little soul, and the only one with the soul is always the incredible Band maid, I have seen, maybe you will think I'm crazy, eleven concerts by the Band-Maid, 9 in Japan and 2 in Europe, and the most incredible ones were in Europe in small theaters where I could be a few centimeters from Saiki and I had to avoid the neck of Kanami's guitar. The instrument you see in this video is the Shamisen, it is very difficult to play and even in Japan few dare, the girl of the Wagakki Band is crazy, it is as if he were jimmy Hedrix multiplied by van Hallen, he does really crazy things at an absurd speed for one instrument with one neck completely without any tone reference. hi, yours is the best channel for music reaction.
No soul? I disagree with you. >the only one with the soul is always the incredible Band maid, You're kidding me. They're an idol band that follows in the footsteps of "Visual-kei band"(ex. LArc-en-Ciel, LUNA SEA, BUCK-TICK, SIAM SHADE, SOFT BALLET, etc). Visual-kei music was so popular in the 90's and 2000's that Band-maid are a bit old-fashioned for Japanese, but to Westerners who don't know Visual-kei, they seem to be a breath of fresh air. That's why 70% of Band-maids' fans live abroad. I like Band-maid too, but If Band-maid with their strong office promotion are regarded as having a soul, then other Japanese bands are fullfull of soul. >the Shamisen, it is very difficult to play and even in Japan few dare umm...Even kids can play the shamisen in Aomori prefectur and Okinawa prefectur.
I saw this some days ago... its really great...crazy great ... (You should really react to Band-Maid's "Gion-Cho" or "Secret MAIKO Lips" ... I say this because they incorporated some traditional instruments (like the tsugaru shamisen (the japanese banjo!), here played by Ninagawa Beni) in those songs and played them as "Band-Maiko") :-D ... great stuff! Japan... so many good things...
Also you are EXACTLY right, that instrument is in fact a Japanese Banjo. It's called a Shamisen as other comments have mentioned but it works on the same principle as a banjo in that it sounds against a taught skin rather than into hollow wood.
You need to see Unlucky Morpheus "Black Pentagram" Live & witness the greatness that exists with Fuki & Jill.... and the rest of them are extremely talented as well. They're practically a Japanese supergroup. Make sure you choose the one with English subtitles. After you're done with that, you need to check out Galneryus & be introduced to the reigning God Of The Guitar, Syu. Preferably start with "Destiny", "Force Of Courage", or "Angel Of Salvation" (preferably live versions).

Thanks for the video mate, love your like minded spirit. You keep doing reactions to music from around the world and I'll keep coming back
Glad that you like them, i discovered the band about the time you posted this video. I've never seen this video until now. I was just blown away by this band, these guys are good. Beni can shred a guitar just as well as or maybe better than the greats. The band is better live than in the studio. Here's one of their songs that i think that you might like~ "Hoshizukiyo", Live at Heian Jingu 2017. The first part of that video, Homura, i really enjoy, it's so awesome and dynamic.
Beni is love, Beni is life !! Beni Ninagawa, she started by posting shamisen clips on YT before being noticed by the band and recruited. Oh yeah, here's your 5th japanese metal band. Ofc it has female lead because they simply kick ass. Yousei Teikokku - Shito Kanadeshi Hametuno Tategoto
Hey Mr. Rock N Roll, your reaction to this video clip and the band is exactly the same as mine. Unbelievable. I play this band's videos over and over again. The opening song is fantastic.
Finally you got them, and you have to follow Yuko channel because often she stream live singing :D and naturally you have to check their classic "Senbonzakura" :)
I loved this reaction vid. In my head I was just thinking, "...yeah, Beni has that effect on people". Please do more Wagakki Band! They became my favorite band a couple years ago, and it's great seeing western audiences finally finding out how great they are. God willing, when the world regains some stability, they'll do more shows in the US again.
And if you needed a recommendation, this is a live performance of Wagakki Band's Hoshizukyo at their New Years concert from 2017. Ninagawa Beni on her shamisen (japanese banjo) gets another solo in this particular performance. ua-cam.com/video/SXt3G6r41ts/v-deo.html
Wow, you finally found Wagakki Band! They've been a favourite for quite awhile now, and this instrumental intro is a great way to see their chops. As for the bass player, the parents will have a gender reveal party for it as soon as they figure out what they have... Seriously, he's a he lol. One thing I really like about this band is their aesthetic sense - I can't stop admiring their style as much as their music. I'd also recommend checking out their Senbonsakura (spelled completely wrong) official music video, one of the best MVs I've ever seen. Cheers :-)
What I love about Senbonzakura is that most people don't know it's a Vocaloid cover.... In fact, in their early days, Waggaki did mostly vocaloid covers...
They have the regular drums, guitar, and bass for modern instruments. For the traditional instruments there is the shamisen (Japenese Banjo), koto, taiko drums, and shakuhachi (the woodwind inst.). There are some songs they've brought in orchestras and whatnot for. Though I've only seen it in a solo mv the lead singer can play the keyboard.
This is a great introduction to the Wagakki band. They’ve been around about 8 years as a band. The lead singer, Yuko Suzuhana is legendary in Japan for roles in Anime and Vocaloid. Their first release as the Wagakki Band was “The Story of Six Trillion Years and One Night.” “Ten Thousand Cherry Trees” is another early monster hit. The band is 100% Japanese, but half the band play traditional Japanese instruments and half modern ones. (Look again at the drummers.) Oh, the instrument Kanade plays is a shamisen.
that is beni ninagawa playing the instrument that is called the tsugaru shamisen. she and vocalist yuko suzuhana are both knockouts .been around since 2012 and just amazing.
I absolutely love seeing peoples reactions to this band. Why? Because they are almost the exact same as mine were. LOL! Wagakki Band is a fucking force of nature and talent!
Thats what you get when put Pro in their instrument together. Gratz for reacting to wagakki. For your suggestion you can see some Tengaku or Hangeki no Yaiba for a rage tone from wagakki
One of my favourites is Senbon Zakura ( A thousand Cherry Trees) a great mv and a modern take on an old Japanese folk song. Wagakki band does it so well - that blend of the trad and modern Rock
The song is actually about Japan's youngest emperor Emperor Mutsuhito who ruled Japan at the age of 15. The lyrics are the things that happened during his days as emperor where the Americans came to break down Japan's isolation circle and to trade with them. They also threatened young Mutsuhito that if he didn't open the trading systems they will destroy Japan. For a young boy, Mutsuhito is recognized as one of the greatest emperors Japan ever had he had the knowledge of ruling and politics so he knows what to do at some times. He lasted until 1912 (He was born in 1852)
Hello Mr Rock & Roll The banjo that she was playing it's called shamisen is it traditional Japanese guitar lights banjo you can say I played to mine is Okinawa Style shamisen is not that difficult mine mine has only three strings so there's four that's unique some of them have five have a different tones but it's a pretty unique banjo Japanese style

Your pronunciation of the band name is very good. "Wa" means "Japanese" and "gakki" means "instruments". Likewise, "wagyu" means "Japanese beef/cattle", "washi" = "Japanese paper", "washoku" = "Japanese cuisine", etc. "Wa" is 和 in kanji.
this explanation doesnt really help me :D wa means japanese? i thought its a topic marker. すみません
@@MetalGuitarTimo It's a different "wa." This one uses kanji, while the particle does not.
把, 羽, and 話 can likewise be pronounced "wa."
Japanese writing, from the perspective of a native English speaker, really complicated.
Literally just translates to japanese instrumental band
日本語難しい
If you watch carefully, twice during Akatsuki no Ito, the drummer (Wabasi) on the modern set breaks two (2) drum sticks, tosses them over his shoulder (and the gong) without missing a lick when he picks up his backup drum sticks.
Thats so sick 😍
Another great reaction! You should check out Ningen Isu - 'Heartless Scat' when you can. Its another Japanese band but you wont be disappointed ;)
改めて着物を観ると煌びやかで美しい☺️
その美しさを世界に広めて下さい😉
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
MAKE MORE REACTS OF WAGAKKI BAND
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
if you make a video to say these please, that would be popular I guess lol
@@yibomusic7643 i can't because i'm shy in front a camera 😳🙈
And yes, the glow sticks called ""Cyalume"" are a MUST during japanese events, often used as specific coreography by the fans, normally during Idol events but not only :D and there are dancers too that use them and they are CRAZY...
Band-Maid and Wagakki Band Conquered the world!
I just got recommended this song by yt, listened it and got addicted. So I ended up here and loved your energetic reaction :)
have been in Japan for work, many times from 2000 until 2019, and being a big fan of music, I went to see all the possible concerts of Japanese bands of any musical genre.
There are few Japanese bands that manage to maintain true creativity and a great soul in their music, one of them is certainly Band MaId and Wagakki Band, but I must tell you that if you go to see the concerts in the end you will think that Band-Maid is the best that you can find, most of the Japanese bands are exaggerated in the exposure of the technique and are then boring to listen to in an entire concert, I wanted to write this for some time because I listened to all the concerts of the latest Japanese bands
and as I am also a hobby musician I can tell you that in Japan they have a great technique but very little soul, and the only one with the soul is always the incredible Band maid, I have seen, maybe you will think I'm crazy, eleven concerts by the Band-Maid, 9 in Japan and 2 in Europe, and the most incredible ones were in Europe in small theaters where I could be a few centimeters from Saiki and I had to avoid the neck of Kanami's guitar.
No soul? I disagree with you.
>the only one with the soul is always the incredible Band maid,
You're kidding me.
I like Band-maid too, but If Band-maid with their strong office promotion are regarded as having a soul, then other Japanese bands are fullfull of soul.
>the Shamisen, it is very difficult to play and even in Japan few dare
umm...Even kids can play the shamisen in Aomori prefectur and Okinawa prefectur.
YES I was waiting for the day you found them.
I had the same reaction bro,and still get emotional when I see that clip.
Yes sir! Band-maiko!!!!! Mr rock'n roll miss it!!!!!
Definitely get into this band more they are a national treasure.
I found your video because of Wagakki. I love both rock and some Japanese styles.
I've been a fan of Wagakki Band for years now. I didn't even know reactions to their music was a thing. I have a new rabbit hole to go down! Awesome reaction. Music really is awesome.
my fav band from Japan! love the sound
this is literally the best reaction of wagakki that I've seen so far. rock on!
I've seen the waggaki band in my recommendations before, because I like to listen to a lot of classical music from around the world, but I never bothered to watch em.
They were supposed to play at the olympics in 2020... but it got canceled... hopefully they still play whenever it happens next. :D
Beni (the "banjo" player) is awesome.
The opening song is fantastic.
how cool is that they have two drummers!
Maximum the Hormone. Make it 5 Japanese bands. Yushu Fukushu I highly recommend.
Ah, the polar opposite of Babymetal.
I might be wrong but the banjo like guitar is Shamisen, the flute is Shakuhachi, the orizontal harp is Koto and the drum set is Taiko.
Even now really want to know how can they combine Japanese traditional music and Metal so perfectly. XD
May I suggest the videos of theirs for "Senbonzakura", "kishikaisei", "ikusa", and "hanabi". They really put a lot into their videos.
Nijiiro Chouchou is also fine, he just need to stay away from live perfomance.
Finally you got them, and you have to follow Yuko channel because often she stream live singing :D and naturally you have to check their classic "Senbonzakura" :)
Classic indeed, but it's not "theirs"... It's a vocaloid cover... in fact, at first, Waggaki Band only did vocaloid covers...
So how epic do you want this to be?
Japan: Yes.....
I too suddenly get the urge to stand up and walk around when I hear music that gets me amped up, often accompanied by imagining fantastical scenarios.

Who doesn’t love a good metal riff? Love it.
One of the best rock reactions video i have ever seen
和楽器バント、BAND-MAIDは日本が誇るバントグループ
@@JGM0JGM So I heard; I had to look up the word vocaloid, and it is intriguing. Cheers!
Hahahaha loved your reaction 😂. I love this band and I think you should listen to some more of their songs !
There's also videos of Beni playing the Shamisen from before her joining this group that are of similar format to Fami the Bass girl's videos.
You actually said their name right the first time and I'm impressed! lol
that is beni ninagawa playing the instrument that is called the tsugaru shamisen. she and vocalist yuko suzuhana are both knockouts .been around since 2012 and just amazing.
Super good Video,good reaction.
Wagakki Band - Hana Furumai / Live Version
Yes more Wagakki Band please! :D
Check out "Keshikaisei", "Senbonzakura" and maybe "Strong Fate".
And one more thing.... BENI-CHAN!!!!!
3:52 That sounded so freakin EPIC. =)
Wow!!! Thanks for the introduction to this band. What a production. I will definitely be checking them out
One of my favourites is Senbon Zakura ( A thousand Cherry Trees) a great mv and a modern take on an old Japanese folk song.
He lasted until 1912 (He was born in 1852)
Hello Mr Rock & Roll
The banjo that she was playing it's called shamisen is it traditional Japanese guitar lights banjo you can say I played to mine is Okinawa Style shamisen is not that difficult mine mine has only three strings so there's four that's unique some of them have five have a different tones but it's a pretty unique banjo Japanese style
I discover this band 3 weeks ago. It s a very good band. Thanks from France et vive le rock!!🤘🤘🤘
good choice,good reaction.
this band is the official artist of the Olympic2021 in Japan.
Adding my suggestion for you to check out Unlucky Morpheus.
いい選曲! Good song selection!
Man am in love traditional Japanese music and western I love it 😍😍😍 love the shamisen and the flute such gorgeous instruments
