Wainwright is one of my favourite one off characters in Doctor Who. He has such a wonderful speech about losing his faith due to the war and how no one benefits from it. His death always makes me sad because he thought he had his faith back when he faced the girls but they twist it on him and he is killed not believing.

Yes, he's brilliant. The late, great Nicholas Parsons, was a perfect choice for the role, and it shows that he was a damn good actor. You believe his character, every word, and it hurts when he's killed.

He's been my favourite one-off DW character since the story aired. An extremely likeable and relatable man, wonderfully acted by the late Nicholas Parsons. It hurts to see him regain his faith, only to have it snatched away by self-doubt when we need it the most. Nicholas was worried that he may not have the gravitas to convey the character, but he absolutely nailed it.

very slow build up to the whole Ace and the baby reveal compared to the others, much would've preferred "Tales of the Tardis" to have used Battlefield, Remembrance, or Survival instead as a good revisitation on what 7th Doc and Ace were all about.

A wonderfully atmospheric story, with a brooding and unsettling soundtrack. The scene with Wainwright confronting the two Haemovores in the graveyard is straight out of a Hammer film. The late Nicholas Parsons was so good in this.

To me this is the best story the show has ever produced. It was a bit of everything and its so complex and multilayered: WW2, Soviets, codecracking, vampires, Old ones, Vikings...Not a bad performance and a cracking Resolution to what started on Dragonfire

I love this story - there are actually factual elements in it, weirdly, and Ingiger (the main Haemovore) is one of the most beautifully realised monsters in the show's history. Nicholas Parsons (R.I.P.), is excellent as the vicar who has lost his faith.
When The Doctor fights off the Haemovores by using his faith in his companions, if you lip read, you can see Sylvester McCoy reciting the names of all of The Doctor's companions, from Susan to Ace. He didn't have to, but he does, and it's awesome, and oddly moving, too.

@@andrewgold-qu1bl - Haemovores are the proto-vampires featured in the story. Those ancient things that emerge from the sea. Long teeth and talons.
I don't believe the name is used in the show, but it is in the Target novelisation, by Ian Briggs. The novelisation, of course, is based on the script.

    • @adammclaughlin845

@@brianartillery "Haemovores" is used repeatedly in the script and it's directly stated that humans will eventually evolve into them - an idea that was rapidly dropped like the live grenade it is. The story makes very little sense, they were brought from the future into the past to help Fenric destroy humans which would actually also destroy the haemovores, all because Fenric lost a chess game against the Doctor... where Earth came into all this is beyond me!

Absolutely incredible story. This honestly feels like the closest we’ll ever get of a Lovecrafian style story of the TV show. While they’re have been much more stories in Novels and Audio actually featuring Lovecraft ideas and creatures.
This one feels more unique and bringing it’s own spin on it. The 7th Doctor. The Chess Master. Time’s Champion. Fighting the literal physical manifestation of Pure Evil itself.
“The Dawn Of Time: The Beginning of All Beginnings! Two forces only Good and Evil. Then Chaos! Time is Born. Matter, Space. The Universe Cries Out like a New Born! The Force’s Shatter, as the Universe Explodes outwards! Only Echos Remain. And yet somehow. Somehow! The Evil Force Survives! An intelligence: Pure Evil!”.

This was part of what was (at the time) called 'The Cartmel Master Plan' (named for newest showrunner Andrew Cartmel) -- he started to portray the Doctor not as a random wandering Bohemian, but, rather, as an ancient being who had had some involvement in the creation/protection of the universe, and who had some millennia-old grand scheme -- you can see hints of it in Battlefield (where the Doctor apparently played 'Merlin' in an alternate-dimension), in Remembrance of the Daleks (where he has been quietly hiding a terrible superweapon, to be used if the Daleks return), and, most clearly, in this Fenric story.

Ironically I'd say McCoy's final series was his best, considering they cancelled it after. This just had Dr Who written all over it - eeriness! Growing up with Dr Who, for me, what made a good episode wasn't exactly fear, but a sense of unease, that something bad is afoot, but also the reassuring feeling that The Doctor was there to deal with it! Too bad serials like this couldn't save it, and we didn't find out what McCoy's fourth series would have been like!

Seven was a player of games. Very long games. Ace was an essential game piece that he needed to win this particular game. The Doctor hated doing it - but he did, manipulating Ace into hating him, to steer the game in his favour. Callous, but necessary.

This is genuinely scary, but the plot makes no sense and the writing is often bizarre, loaded with non-sequiturs, especially for Ace. It's really anti-English too: they have a commander who thinks he's Hitler, a vicar who loses his faith because Britain is bombing Germany (he's more than happy about them bombing us!) and the invading Russian traitors end up as the heroes! Plus the human race will now evolve into Davey Jones in thousands of years, but it already happened centuries ago?? The music is fantastic though, and the vampire girls are terrifying, miles scarier than the haemovores!

The Reverend wasn't pro-Germany. He believed in the good of humanity, which doesn't mean 'UK only'. People were turning to him because of the war, death, and bombings, yet they seem perfectly happy to make orphans out of the other side when it suits them. It was a neutral dilemma, not a matter of 'sides'. He's also aware of what Commander Millington is doing beneath the Church, which makes matters even worse. It's all explained in the first episode - particularly the rant by Miss Hardaker.
The Russians aren't the 'heroes', because their mission was to steal from their allies in the first place - but it turns out that this particular base of allies is taking the 'learn your enemy' a bit too seriously, and wants to take out Germany (and Russia) with chemical weapons thanks to the influence of an Old God and a Commander who's getting a bit too Hitler'ish for his own good.
In short, there are no good sides in war.

    • @RopeDrink
      @RopeDrink 5 місяців тому

@@mayotango1317It's pretty obvious that the person either (a) mistook the condensed compilation for full episode or (b) isn't grasping all the context and nuance.
The Reverend's plight is made clear throughout the story, and the presence of English baddies - or having more reason to root for people from a different country - doesn't magically make stories "Anti-English" - and being haunted by the prospect of innocent people and children being bombed by your own country doesn't make you "Pro-Other-Side".

As just a series of clips, this story loses so much nuance. In the full episode, his failing faith had nearly spelled his end before the Doctor intervened, and he feels as if he needs to prove his faith to continue, and when he can’t… the horror of the world just overtakes his will to really go on

This is such a well thought out story, that I have doubts that JNT had anything to do with it!
There are so many great scenes. There is the obvious Good vs. Evil as a backbone. Evil reigns terror in times of War - where we trained to accept hatred and killing as doctrine.
The only thing that breaks it, is the one words in the Decipher - LOVE. Love for one's country as with his emblem. Love of attraction - as between the two gay men who have questioned war once too many times. The Love Ace has of her Mother (as the baby) & Grandmother. But of course, the Love of God is only faith - not belief. It's hard to believe in a being that doesn't exist in any corporeal form. Proof denies faith, which is the Holy books main flaw. Religion is the fear to assess the truth. Which is why they use the truth to destroy him in the end. Very sad. The Doctor has faith in people who risked their lives to do good and is therefore unquestionable.
The Love that Ace has for the Doctor is challenged, because the love the Doctor has for Ace is to protect her - even at the cost of their friendship & trust. Evil called his bluff and thought he wouldn't do it. But did not realise that the Haemavore at the end had a change of heart after the Doctor introduced him to the first taste of affection. That's the trouble with keeping a monster locked up. It will turn against you after years of torment because it is ready for something alternative.
The scene where Ace is talking about moving faster than light speed (186,000 miles per second) is about how she would have become a time lady in future events, though this never occurred. She is introspecting with future events, because thought is time-travel. Put it this way.. is time accelerating? Or are you merely remembering less of each moment, each day, as you get older? If you were able to store more, you would get a greater sense of time slowing down. Hence the saying "time flies when you're having fun".
Fenric tried to play the game of time by moving pieces in reality, but underestimated the evolution of nature and how love is the result of intelligence. Survival is the law of the Jungle. Collaboration is the law of civilisation. Very clever story, because all this is hidden until the punch line.
