The synthesizer sound of the eighties is my era, much to my chagrin., is so soothing in my old age. There seems to be so many “one hit wonders” from this era. Each “hit” sounds like a classic.
Anything synth grabbed my attention back then. I was fairly decent at piano and synth was so much cooler but with the same basic skill set. It was the synth in Tom Petty’s “You Got Lucky” that sucked me into his sphere of music.
Pet Shop Boys blew this sound through the roof. It's A Sin, West End Girls and even The Village People cover of Go West. This sound went with the next wave of British pop. The Aussie brought us theirs too and we welcomed it.
As a massive PSB fan then I agree, but as a friend of David Sterry (vocals/guitar/composer) and George Pappas (longest running keyboardist) then I have to back my boys and point out that they brought that killer synth 3 years before PSB went nuclear with the 2nd version of West End Girls. I shall never forgive any of them for not doing what would have been a dream come true. David and George were originally going to open as Real Life for PSB's Pandemonium tour in Sydney 2011, it would have been amazing.
This song was actually released twice in the 80's. I think the one you listened to was actually titled "Send Me An Angel 89". Each version had it's own Video as well. They have other songs, "Catch Me I'm Falling" and "God Tonight". I am so glad that you finally listened to this song, I had requested it a while back for you. My favorite reactions videos are when you listen to someone for the first time. You might also like the group ABC and "The Look of Love", "Poison Arrow" as well as other hits of theirs.
I do believe "Catch Me I'm Falling" was by Pretty Poison....or did Pretty Poison cover the song? I Remember Send Me An Angel was in the movie Rad and Lori Loughlin and a body double doing a dance with a bike to this song.
There are certain songs that just completely encapsulate the vibe of the 80's. This is one of them. I can almost smell the Kissing Potion Lip Balm and Charlie perfume just hearing this song! 😂
Whoa! Two Aussie band first reactions in a row! Man, I loved this song when I was a teenager. Sadly, this was their only MAJOR hit in the US, though they did have a minor hit with "Catch Me I'm Falling", which is also a great song. I remember owning the album this came from, Heartland, on vinyl! (Yes, I'm that old.) "Openhearted" and "Always" were other great tunes from that debut album. One of the best things about the late 70s and into the 80s, was that the music wasn't full of anger or hate like later decades, and the artists were really reaching and exploring what could be done with the music while telling a story with the song.
You need to get into more Depeche Mode, they were one of the biggest synth bands of the 80's, selling out huge stadiums - "Personal Jesus", "Just Can't Get Enough", "People are People", "Master & Servant", "Blasphemous Rumours".

Wow, I'm totally blown away that you guys reacted to this! This song is just so upper crust for the period, one of those 80's high IQ alternative songs I'd say. There's a different recording of this, too, that I believe was the original album version that I prefer and would highly recommend you guys listen to. A pretty cool song from the mid 90s that mixed a hip hop beat with some blues and a little alternative is “Standing Outside A Broken Phone Booth With Money In My Hand” by Primitive Radio Gods. It’s a pretty cool one hit
There was some great synth-pop singles out in '83-'84. Other great examples were Industry - State Of The Nation; Minor Detail - Canvas of Life; The Adventures - Send My Heart; Eight Seconds - Kiss You When It's Dangerous. Good sounds - thank you.
Love this song. Takes me back to Philly 1983 when we had a new radio station, I92, that played all kinds of new wave etc. It lasted about two months. Pity
I haven't heard this song in so long. It's kind of a quirky song and group but was popular for a short time. I remember this song playing on my walkman radio as I rode my bike to see this girl I liked at the time and thought; "I'm on my way to see an angel and I didn't even need to ask"......very corny of me and can't believe I'm sharing this lol.
Oh my....this always takes me back to my first semester of college. My roommate (mind you, I'm an only child who'd never had to share anything, let alone a room) had this song recorded over and over and OVER on both sides of a cassette that he played continuously. It was quite literally his ONLY song. Suffice it to say, I quickly developed lots of outside interests that kept me out of that room as much as possible 😆
I was a kid in 1983, born in 70s I have always loved this song. It's 2023 and still enjoy it. The decade was amazing to live through, best music , cartoons, movies, fashion, tech, and more.
YES!!!! David Sterry (writer/composer/lead singer/guitarist) and George Pappas (keyboards) from Real Life are good friends of mine! I'm SO happy to see you do this, can't wait to see your reaction. Edit 1 - David and the boys first did this in 1983 then remade it in 1989. Aus singer Lisa Edwards is the vocal for the 'angel'.
My absolute fav song back in school in the summer of 84 (it was recoded and issued in Australia in 83 but here it only became a hit the year after) - together with Sounds Like a Melody by Alphaville. Did you already check this one out? Send Me an Angel was even a topic in one of our English classes here in Switzerland. The song was HUGE and it really brings me tears that you are paying tribute to it here! I wonder what you would say to Chris de Burgh's High on Emotion from the same year (he had better songs but that one was a big hit as well - in the US you only know him from Lady in Red, a schmalz song even he hates :D)
The groove and synth on this is so intense. Really glad you listened to it. A few songs similar to this one that I would recommend are; Right On Track by The Breakfast Club, One Night in Bangkok by Murray Head, Shoot that Poison Arrow by ABC and No Way Out by Jefferson Starship. There are so many others already mentioned. Enjoy!

OMG! I haven't heard this song since it came out! I was in 8th grade (makes me feel old). I love it!
This song was featured prominently in the movie, "Real Gemius" starring Val Kilmer... You guys should check it out for the movie channel!
Thanks for checking this out. I was 27 when this came out. I think I had it on repeat for the whole first week.
This made me laugh
My Dad's best friend from High School is the bassist - Alan Johnson.
He always plays bare foot.
The club I used to go to back in the day played this song all the time. Always got everyone on the floor.
This song was in the 80s movie "Rad" about BMX racing

You guys have an entire untapped mine of 80s sound: Goth/New Wave!!! Bauhaus, Christian Death, Nina Hagen...
Life was good when MTV played music!!!
Love this song. Had the album years ago. I'd call it "Synth Pop" which was huge then.
What a awesome song......my teen years rocked with so many different sounds and genres of music.
Enjoy!
#1NJFan here. Definitely sharing this guys. Thanks, I forgot about this song cause I didn't know who it was (not in my hair metal radar). Now I can go down that rabbit hole. Awesome reaction guys 💯☮️❤️😀
Forgot about this classic from the 80s. This is the sound of my teenage years.
You should listen to the Pet Shop Boys. Specifically, "What Have I done to Deserve this?", "It's a Sin" or "Heart".
New wave one-hit wonders don't get much better than this. :)
They had many hits though
"Catch me I'm falling" was also a hit all over Europe. Maybe not so much in the US, but that's just a secondary music market. 😉😛
Love this song!! Used in 2 of my favorite movies, The Wizard and RAD.
♥ this song! Def more of an early 80s new wave kinda vibe
One-hit-wonders was a huge phenomenon of the 1980s - especially for groups from outside the U.S. I love that you reacted to this one!
Oh, I had forgotten about this song! It’s one of my favorites!
