- Explaining how to properly set "RGB Range" on Playstation (PS4)
A lot of PS4 and Playstation users are doing this WRONG! Should you use "Limited" or "Full" RGB Range on your PS4 or Playstation? Here's the answer...
Generally, most TVs default to "Limited" RGB, were many gaming monitors like BenQ let you manually select the RGB range. For best color accuracy, you want the monitor and Playstation RGB range to match. Note it is worth mentioning that some PC monitors like select ASUS models only support "FULL" RGB range. It's important that you research your monitor so that way you know what the proper setting is to use. Thanks for watching!
*NOTE* - it is worth mentioning that *SOME* PC monitors only support a "Full" RGB range. If you're playing with a PC monitor and there is no option to change RGB in the settings, refer to your user manual or google to see what the default setting is. If colors look extremely washed out and white on Auto, set to full because your monitor most likely defaults to RGB full
hey john! can you please make a tutorial on every way you are aware of removing input lag on ps4
What is auto? I.e. what it is by default? Does HDR have different setting of low/full like nvidia or LG C9 has?

RE fan oh really? I have it ON on my ps4 because it looks better, but I didn’t know it was better like that
Carlton McGriff think they mean to adjust black levels and color range manually on monitor m8, not on the PS4, but doing both will surely get you the best picture you could want, it will be customized completely to your own liking by you!
@@carltonmcgriff5986 no high contrast if you have a 4k tv or monitor that allows it I think that's what he means that what I have on anyway
@@carltonmcgriff5986 I have HDR turned on and have it on deep colour setting and high contrast on my tv in 4k and it looks decent on most games only downgrades if put my tv on game mode
Recommended defaults to limited rgb. If your tv supports it, which it should if purchased in the last 10 years, you are only limiting your own viewing experience by not running full.
Some games are actually designed to use a certain colour space as well, so setting it to a colour space not expected by the game can cause issues with the picture quality as well. I've learned this from experience, having set both my TV and PS4 to full, then still finding some games to have excessively darker images than others, or contrast levels that were vastly different. I thought I needed glasses/new TV the way some games looked compared to others with the forced setting. Setting it back to auto on both the TV and PS4 alleviated this. If anything, most games seem to use the Limited colour space.
Great info, thanks for sharing
Wow! Thata good to know.
Bad thing is how to actually know if a need to use Full or Limited depending on the games...
So auto
Usually if you have a monitor "full" and if you have a TV "limited".
That's gonna work in the 99% of the cases.
And thats why the ps4 is by default in automatic (limited) because is targeting for the tv users
Good info my man
But when I put it on limited my colors look washed out
On my tv

Samsung 4K tv’s call the RGB range on there menus black level
So if you are using full RGB set tv to normal black level
If you are using limited RGB set your tv to low black level
Hope this info helps Samsung tv owners
Good info man, appreciate you helping other people out
Thanks 👍
How about for a LG 4K nano cell
Thanks!
Always found it weird why they wouldn't just go along, and name it the same thing. Limited and Full makes more sense than Low and Normal IMO.
If you’re using HDMI then the PS4 and monitor/TV will negotiate the correct setting in automatic. The manual options are only there for either the small percentage of TVs/monitors that do not negotiate, you’re using an intermediary device like an amp and the signal to negotiate is not passed through correctly, or you are converting to a different input connector for the monitor. In 99.9% of cases automatic will automatically negotiate the correct setting via the HDMI protocols and this setting does not need to be changed.
Pretty much all modern monitors support full RGB range. This is mostly a setting to be concerned with in regards to TV's. If your TV or monitor doesn't have RGB full or limited settings, test setting the PS4 RGB range to limited and then to full. The setting that has the better contrast and doesn't look washed out is the correct one.
Imagine the surprise of those who just learned this after years, and is now plugging in their PS3 again to try it there as well. I'm pretty excited for them. Like having my first pair of glasses after my eyes went bad
Just a tech warning. Changing the video performance settings inside PS4 operating system is not a problem. However, NEVER change resolution settings on the safe mode options or you will make your PS4 unbootable, and require complete reinstallation of the OS and applications. Many a sad face I have seen with people who did not know the difference in these processes.
So that’s what happened to my last ps4.
I never got a Problem like that?
What do you mean by safe mode?
@@jackjelly766 if your holding the „on“ button on the ps for 10 secs, you can boot up the ps in safe mode.
@@jackjelly766
Boot to safe mode and select rebuild database if the system slows or every few months, it's like a low level defrag!
If you are wondering if your tv is full or limited RGB set auto then to limited or full, if the screen does not go blank for a few seconds it supports that setting as it's already using it!
Automatic/Limited looks washed out on my TV (its settings don't really affect it), Full looks like the correct setting as it gives me true darks/lights etc. So if I'm "Doing it wrong" I'm fine with it 🤷♂️😂
Use full what’s he to say I changed it to full my games look a lot better now
I think you missed the point. He's saying that, if your console is set to full, make sure your TV is also set to full.
I play ps4 pro with LG 1080p TV.
When i set to full, the color popped out, the dark and bright are better. You can tell the distance of an object much better.
When i set to auto/limited, the color washed out.
So i stay with full.
You doing it wrong... it’s s stupid myth
@@madamevoodoo8217 They are not doing it wrong noob lol. For most modern 1080p monitors or 1080p TVs, you should have the ps4 rgb set to full or else the image will indeed look washed out if it's set to limited or automatic....Why? Because dummy, most 1080p TVs and monitors use a 1.4 hdmi port, which is a low speed signal. This means you don't get all the image and color information sent to your screen, therefore you need to manually turn on the Full rgb colors in order to make up for the lack of colors you get from a low speed HDMI signal. Unlike 4k TVs or 4k/1440p monitors that send a complete and accurate image to your screen from your PS4 via a High speed 18 gbs HDMI cable, hence why it is recommended for this option to be kept at "Automatic" in this particular case because it would be an overkill if you have a monitor that gets all the colors from its hdmi signal while having RGB set to full on your PlayStation settings. The problem lies here and this is why people report crushed blacks and a saturated image overall. This option should only be left alone if your TV or monitor are capable of outputting a highspeed image signal using an hdmi 2.0 port and a high speed HDMI cable. Think of it as being similar to supersampling being turned on for 1080p screens. It would not make any sense if you were to manually turn on supersampling on a 4k screen because the image signal is already capable for outputting 4k and doesn't need for you to downscale a 4k image like it would for a 1080p screen.
Thank you!!! Also changed my audio output to Dolby and there is a huge difference! 5 years on and never knew.
If you have a DTS capable receiver the sound will be richer set to DTS!

Also with the stuff that he says I got a strong déjà-vu.
Maybe the sales-person gave the same lecture on RGB

I've never messed with the color output settings but I'll see if this makes a difference today
I’ve been wandering how I would get the words on the side of the screen back on the tv thanks this really helped
The truth is
In PS4 must set to Limited
In Xbox one must set to TV= limited
All TVs support Limited but in budget TVs they have full which work very poorly
So all game console are designed to work 100% when both TV and console set to limited
In fact all LG TVs by default game mode black level set to low which = limited
In console if you set Full to Full you will not get the maximum colors depth and contrast, because you will slightly you need to change brightness inside the game!
Thanks for sharing
What about TCL Series 5 It's a budget TV but it doesn't have a setting for RGB.
A video to say "leave it as default"
Thanks for the vid! I thought I had FULL set without checking the 0-255 on my monitor. Turns out I had auto set the whole time but was able to switch to FULL with 0-255 and I did see a difference in the few seconds I had to look. I'll probably enjoy the details when I get on tonight. I have an Asus monitor from 2 years ago. Its a gaming monitor. It does not allow me to change the specific rbg setting, but I read online that basically all modern PC monitors have full rgb already enabled, since Full rgb is what Windows uses to output the image.
I would check the settings again and then check Google for the specs of the default monitor settings. It really depends on the monitor
@@JohnGlasscock Yeah it appears that it in fact support full rgb. Its asus vg245h. But it does not have a setting that allows you to change between Full and limited, could this be because it only supports full rgb? To me full rgb looks far superior meanwhile limited looks washed out.

At least this video has some educational values of the RGB color space range. The correction is, most TV's don't display full range RGB. The (HDMI) black levels on TV's only corrects the color space to what the TV can display. For example: If you set the RGB value of your console to be full range, you'd have to set the (HDMI) black to low (or whatever corresponds to low depending on your TV brand). While the RGB color space displayed is correct for the image, it does not technically mean your TV is actually displaying full range RGB (depending on the model/display panel used). All TV is doing it accepting the RGB color space values and converting it to what can be displayed on your TV (like I said most TV's only display limited range RGB regardless if it has a black level setting). Meaning, you'll still only get limited range RGB displayed on your TV because the display panel can only show this color space or in other words there would be no difference to image compared to the console set as limited and the TV's black level set to high . Whereas TV's that do not have a black level setting can only display properly if the source (console) is set to the correct color space the TV can display. My recommended settings for modern console's connected to a TV is automatic regardless if the TV has a black level setting and full range for monitors (simply because console do not always send the correct EDID information to a connected monitor).
I was having issues with the auto EDID not switching to 2.0 with my Onkyo receiver HDMI through. It was only by playing with the settings I noticed it and manually set to 2.0!
Just curious how do you notice that it’s set like this for most people?
A lot of people are doing this wrong. It's just something everyone knows that everyone is doing wrong.
You can just keep it on limited from your PS4 because its smother and brighter its help you in online games. Full is better reslution but darker and makes online shotting games harder

I figured out why I can select 2160p with my 1440p monitor. It's one of the few that dowscales it to 1440p. I answered my own question lol
So I've been wondering about something for a while now. I also have all my video settings on automatic as recommended and my TV settings should be fine as well but in games without HDR the dark areas look far too black and swallow all the details. In games with HDR it looks great tho and details aren't lost in the shadows. Does anyone know why this is a thing? Before I started using HDR I had my RGB settings on limited and that way the dark areas didn't seem too dark but the blacks weren't that great (sadly I don't have an Oled TV).
To be honest I've always used full even though my 1080p LED TV doesn't support it simply because it looks better... better blacks, better whites and better color overall

Saludos!
I game on an LG C9 OLED TV. You should leave it on limted if you're playing on a TV. There is an issue with the auto handshake, it selects full RGB, that setting is meant for monitors that take advantage of 8-bit. My TV is 10-bit, puts every commercial monitor to shame.
Why is this in my recommended, also I never even bothered looking at the settings lol
Same to both
The right awnser is to match up with the actual resolution of the screen. For example 720p projector select 720p output resolution to avoid upscaling or downscaling. 1080p tv select 1080p resolution. Ect.
That awkward moment where you watch the video and realize you were already doing it correctly.
I am a professional graphics designer/Photographer and I could tell you that changing it to full RGB is better even if your monitor or tv doesn't support and full RGB in the color range spectrum. Changing it to full RGB will max out the color range of your monitor or tv... You are giving out the wrong information...
I don't know but full actually improve jump force silly real life visuals. But the darkness and lighting very shadowy and bright. Might as well set it to limited since it delays

Ruyko 6 i play fps mode too, i will definitely try that with the brightness and black equalizer like you said, thanks bro appreciate it
Full RGB is going to be most noticable in the shadows and highlights. At the end of the day it's your preference, limited or full. & I recommend using FPS mode on that monitor for lowest input lag
I have the same monitor and automatic is best on both monitor and console.
Start a game with above settings. Go into a non-supported HDR game. Press the PS button go to audio video settings, display information. You should see RGB. In the monitor settings you will notice that the monitor has chosen the correct setting. Of 00-255.
Same with HDR games. Though this monitor cannot do 4K @ 60HZ RGB HDR Full 4.4.4 it can do 4K @60HZ 4.2.2 HDR and 4.4.4 RGB since it’s 2.0 HDMI port not 2.1. Changing full or limited in console/monitor will not effect HDR on this monitor or vice versa.

It depends on the tv tho. You need to know your own tech. My Samsung plasma uses the 0-255 range, so the limited setting makes everything look washed out, blacks look grey etc. However my Insignia LED uses the 16-235 range. If you try to use full range on that tv you can barely see anything as the blacks get completely crushed. You gotta know your own tech.
You're mic is amazing, everytime I watch a vid like this my ears bleed.
My ears: we've got another one incoming
If you a tech you would know that putting it at full will use up the max amount of RGB color space range of your TV or monitor nor matter what... it is common knowledge.

No

Also I notice the opposite thing happens on my BenQ HDR monitor.. So I go with Limited on my TV while Full on my Monitor since I want HDR content to be more colorful and not washed out
HDR should output using YCbCr!
another fact or fiction question ...

using monitor speakers causes input lag . is this true also ? i watched and read a couple of videos and threads about connecting either through optical cable or usb to get sound so ps4 has minimum input lag .
