If you manually select the 420 option then the HDR signal there will have HALF of the color information compared to if you had just left it on the "RGB" setting in the menu. I cant put my resolution on automatique because when I put it on 2160 - RGB my screen flash and automatique do that. Got 2 4k tv and its doing it. The one I have now is a 55 samsung 4k curved.
For those with GlassPro 4K (perhaps works with other brands as well), what solved my issue was changing the HDMI EDID Version from Auto EDID to EDID 2.0 because Auto for some reason doesn't choose 2.0 as it should and 1.4 doesn't work, thus manually choose EDID 2.0 and leave it. My GlassPro steps are : 1) settings. 2) Device Preferences. 3) Inputs. 4) HDMI EDID Version.
Just leave it in automatic and you'll always get the best resolution possible. If you play in 4K HDR, the automatic setting is a must. The YUV440 is better than 420 and it's only possible by setting "automatic".
This isn't the full story though and I can see from comments that not explaining the difference other than "HDR forces YUV420" just causes confusion to degree people think YUV420 is better when it's not (also should be obvious when list is from lowest to highest and RGB is at the bottom of the list but yeah). The reason why HDR switches down to YUV420 is because HDR requires more bandwidth that is available, so to get that fit, it compresses the color data by downscaling it. This can also happen if you have older HDMI or HDMI passtrough like soundbar which is bad or old, where it cannot use RGB because there's less bandwidth. So what is the REAL difference between the two options is that the RGB means it has all information intact, all pixels are perfect, where with YUV420 is chroma subsampling where the color information is decreased into 1/4th, which can introduce some artifacting around high contrast edges and slight downgrade in overall quality. Because of this, if possible simply use RGB for highest visual fidelity (technically similar to YUV444). Search up information about chroma subsampling if you want to learn more technical information. Also do not worry, if you are watching youtube videos, all videos here are YUV420, because it saves so much bandwidth which is much more crusial with internet video compared to HDMI wire. Additionally even if color information is 1080p, the brightness information is still 4K, so YUV420 option is still much higher quality from 1080p.
I suggest you make a video on the best monitor/tv for a family man. By that I mean a monitor with good gaming performance, at least 32" screen, and a remote (could be sold separately) to keep the wife happy. Or A TV at least 32" that has a decent enough refresh rate to be competitive in shooters on consoles
Regular PS4’s have a max output at 1080p. PS4 Pro’s have a max output at 2160p, or 4K. Depending on your 4K TV, some are able to upscale 1080p resolutions to 4K. You just have to research the specs and settings of your 4K TV. I hope any of this information helps!
If you have a New TV bought from 2019 till now you definitely want to use 2160 RGB or Auto if your not sure what your TV content supports this because of the bit rate of 8 and 10 and a ratio of (4:4:4) for higher bandwidth color. 2160 YUV420 is usually for color setting between Grey's and whites and a ratio of 10bits of (4:2:0) doesn't necessarily give you the best picture quality and use mostly for older GEN TV's that don't support HDMI 2.0. If you have an older TV that doesn't support HDR/Dolby Vision then Auto is where it should be set at all times.
Some games go whack when you force a resolution. Weird AA, textures blurry/too sharp, and sometimes a horrible fps. I keep mine on automatic too since I’m too lazy to do anything lmao

Rgb is full chroma 4:4:4 uncompressed colors. If you tv support this. Yuv 422 and 420 are compressed formats so you can have hdr,60fps and 4k compressed 4.2.2 or worse 4.2.0. Hdmi 2.0 cant have over 30fps without sacrificing image quality. Hdmi 2.1 can do 4k, 10bit hdr,rgb(4:4:4) and 120hz so yuv422 and 420 exist only becouse hdmi 2.0 data transfer limitation.
YUV420 = Colors run at 1080p (chroma subsampling) so HDR can pass through HDMI. RGB = Colors run at native 2160p but HDR can't pass through HDMI due to bandwidth limitations on HDMI 2.0.
forget hdr, it's a hardware color filter, it creates unrealistic colors that have nothing to do with the calibrated original image. I have switched off hdr permanently for all sources, no matter if game or film
2 reasons why i was "overthinking" it. 1. my ps4 itself gave me a notification saying "the video signal currently being sent to your TV uses the YUV420 color.. your TV might support a higher quality color format if you change its settings" 2. looking it up, my first result was a reddit thread where a top rated post said that automatic wasn't correctly working.
My experience is YUV420 setting is if you have a 4ktv but with throughput issues, like the hdmi port on the TV is only version 1.4 or you can't pass full 2.0 bandwidth through an amp etc because I've had this issue and 2160p rgb had been greyed out. 2160p rgb is the better option to go with. Playstation will automatically switch to yuv422 for hdr content regardless whether you have it on automatic or 2160p rgb.
I have a Sony Bravia 4K tv. Used to have it on 2160 rgb but after awhile it made my tv look staticky and make it blink on and off. Switch to 2160 420 and it’s all good.
1440p should not even exist. They are using it on 27" monitors, which actually are too small for it, as the letters become very tiny. 27" should have 2048x1152 (hard to find nowadays). But don't expect Sony to implement any of these : the main market is still playing on a TV.

is this on a ps4 pro cause im limited to 1080p and 1080i
Yes it is on ps4 pro
forget hdr, it's a hardware color filter, it creates unrealistic colors that have nothing to do with the calibrated original image. I have switched off hdr permanently for all sources, no matter if game or film
2 reasons why i was "overthinking" it.
1. my ps4 itself gave me a notification saying "the video signal currently being sent to your TV uses the YUV420 color.. your TV might support a higher quality color format if you change its settings"
2. looking it up, my first result was a reddit thread where a top rated post said that automatic wasn't correctly working.
chose 1080p if you want to play at stable 30 fps xD
Lol this do not work like that.
@@eloisecole3579 it do tho
@@Skrapes you reallly think changing the resolution help? Just go watch bench mark on ps4, it change nothing.
Automatic will give you more input lag. I would Leave it at 1080p. PS4 pro or ps5 doesn’t support 4K gaming at the moment!
Why i got this recommended just right after i sold my ps4
It means go back and buy a new one.🙂
@@CAPCOM784 it aint worth doing that especially since the ps5 and new xbox are dropping this year or just get a pc
@@Fallout7262 They will be way cheaper around the end of the year so its worth the price to get a Pro and X when the new ones release.

I never even owned a ps4 but it's recommended
I have a Sony Bravia 4K tv. Used to have it on 2160 rgb but after awhile it made my tv look staticky and make it blink on and off. Switch to 2160 420 and it’s all good.
When it only goes up to 1080p 😂

Thank you, John, this video helped me out.
They need to add 1440p support!!
They won't.
1440p should not even exist. They are using it on 27" monitors, which actually are too small for it, as the letters become very tiny.
27" should have 2048x1152 (hard to find nowadays).
But don't expect Sony to implement any of these : the main market is still playing on a TV.
Always watch your tips👍🏻. Very helpful and well done.
What does the HDR do?
Hdr is high dynamic range. It makes the picture look better
@@JohnGlasscock thanks for the reply love your content btw it's useful and i wish you good luck
@@easyhq4475 thanks man
Colors are more vibrant.
@@easyhq4475 prettt much more detail in all areas in shadows you can see details where as before the blacks would be crushed and loose detail. It looks overall better and brighter too colors look more vivid overall I think the image looks like it should
Hi my PS4 slim of sides gets black and I searched in youtube also but there is no video about this problem is there any solution
I'm a PC player, and why does UA-cam Recommend it to me?
I have an Xbox, and I usually watch xbox only! Why do I have this!
Ps4 supports 4k on youtube ? Like xbox one s?
this could be a 20 sec video imagine
Hello everyone, I have a PS4 Slim and my tv is LG 49UF8507 4K (resolution: 3840x2160). But I can see only 720, 1080i and 1080p on the PS4 screen menu. Is this about cable or ps4 slim does not suppot 4k output? Also I could not find the hdmi version of ps4 slim.
Only the ps pro supports 4K res
UA-cam recommended this video...I don't have a Ps4 '-'
The resolution was what was causing my input delay on automatic so I changed it to 720p and now I barely have any input delay on 2K20
Calique Richards you noticed a major difference switching to 720p? I play 2k also.
What if I put it on 1080p will it have more delay then if I put it on 720p or will it be the delay
Honestly John deserves 50 m subs and more
Also folks having HDCP turned off will prevent any streaming it disc based playback!
I keep my ps4 pro on 720p resolution looks great!
Same as ps3
Troll
when you pick RGB while having hdr turned on the pro will automatically give you a hidden option i think its yuv422 or something like that i dont remember, but you can check it in the info tap after you start your HDR game
Juss othomatic! 👍
But... As i've never owned a ps4pro i dont really understand this video... 2160p is a resolution available just for the ps4pro right? Cause i've just a ps4slim a that resolution isn't available.... Am i right?
Seems like bait tbh, never heard of anyone overthinking this.
Hey, I'm facing a problem with my Wi-Fi connection at home. It's not strong enough for me to download updates and games. Fortunately, there's a cafe nearby that has a good Wi-Fi connection. The only issue is that I can't take my big monitor there. Could you please suggest an idea to help me with this situation?
420 ftw !!!

Even if you use RGB as soon as HDR is turned on it'll auto switch to YUV regardless
420p blazing
The best resolution of all time
John, I'm getting a lot your "PS4 is too hot turn off PS4" what could be the solution?
Dude u r famous so stop replying.😂
Sony needs to add 1440p 60fps support...upscaling not so great...needs native support. Xbox supports 1440p 120fps...
Lmao Xbox does not support 120 fps

Are those 2160p settings only for the PlayStation pro? I have a regular PlayStation and a 4k tv and I don't see those as a choice
How do you get 2160p
Thanks man. I always figured it did so on its own ad well because my Samsung screen goes black while loading, suggesting it is making its own adjustments.
top tip. this is mainly for ps4 pro because ps4 slim and the old one is not 4K
How have you got 4k resolution...PS4 pro needed or a certain monitor/ TV ??
how did u get this my ps4 highest option is 1080p
PS4 Pro.
What's the difference between 1080p and 1080i
Leave it on recommended even if you have a tv with hdmi 2.1 to get the full bandwith. its the ps4 pro with the limitation.. changing all theses setting wont do shit.. untill the ps5 comes out then mess around with it as then both tv n ps5 will all match with the correct bandwidth of hdmi 2.1 .. i just had my q95t calibrated and spoke to someone who was very good with all this technology crap he showed me exactly what to do and why and explained to me all the ins and outs
