    This is probably one of the best youtube videos both for fitnes and "how to" tech that I have ever seen. No time is wasted; your illustrations of the exercises are perfectly edited to just the critical form and movement parts. You put a lot of effort into the video editing here and it shows!

    I've got the Forerunner 935 and have tried using the Strength and Cardio settings for my gym work. I tend to use the cardio setting, as it tracks HR and calories and then a good old pen/paper for my weights or I go into the Garmin Connect app and add it manually after my work out. As long as I can track my training time and stress to the body (HR), it fits in with my other Triathlon training and is easier to monitor. I use Cardio for both low intensity strength and conditioning session and higher intensity CrossFit style sessions.
    Great channel and super informative.

    Great review! I think this is just the beginning of accurate strength training auto ID for Garmin. There is an option to buy the chest heart rate strap, I believe. You need 2 sensors to properly ID a more complex gym movement, for instance a pull up. i would love to suggest to Garmin to add another shoe sensor or something similar to work together with the wrist GPS to properly 'guess' the actual exercise; when wrists are not in motion; it does actually very well with current setup.

    I did close press ups today and my Garmin Venu 2 read every single rep (I was blown away). 100% for bench dumbbell fly's but was not so good with rings press ups, almost reading double.
    So looking forward to using this watch for my workouts, definitely keeps me on track and avoids me wasting endless time looking at my phone when I should be training.

    Hi Des, a big shout from India. Thanks for the demo and please keep up the good work! Easily the best review. Absolutely saved me a some precious time as I also don’t have much patience with tech! I bought the Fenix 5x after your review and am in love with the cardio metrics it throws up when it comes to running, swimming or even cycling. Here’s a quick question; The weight (in the Add weight section) is set to 44 kilos for some strange reason and I don’t know how to change it. Would appreciate any help, thanks.

    I have an Epix Pro but I juts disabled the rep counter and do all my strength training exercises for time instead of reps. e.g. 1 minutes of pull ups. followed by 2 minutes of push ups, followed by 1 minute of leg raises, followed by 1 minute of dips, followed by waiting for heartrate to go down to 100, repeat for 6 rounds.

    Great video. You'd think they'd make use of any connected HRM Pro to help with the rep counting as the running dynamics sensors must be able to help when the watch itself isn't moving much.

    I guess you'd be better off without any automatic Rep Counting and just stick to a traditional manual input in a dedicated Gym Tracking app. Garmin is the leader when it comes to Gym Workouts, but not even them can make this a completely automated process. It's just too much to ask for a Watch with some motion sensors in it.
    Just use the watch for the Heart Rate and SPO2 readings while working out. And leave the rep counting aside, or use another app for that as I mentioned.
    Thank you DesFit for this review! Seeing how much you struggled with the automatic rep counting here, I concluded that this should not be a decisive feature for a Fitness Tracker.

    • @DesFit
      @DesFit  5 років тому

      For strength training it’ll just be a point of reference. However for other workouts such as running or cycling it will show details like your split time, cadence and it will even leave a little trophy 🏆 next to your best workouts. So your fastest mile/ 5k/ 10 k/ half marathon/ marathon or farthest runs: cycles (miles and time) etc etc will be marked with a symbol.
      That can be used as a way to compare

    Solid and through deep dive. I'm in the market for a watch that tracks weightlifting specifically, and the one thing you noted was the seated lifts or machine based. I'm recovering from an L5 disc injury and relying on a lot of those for form. Doesn't sound like it does real well in that regard. Do you recommend an alternative for those or have you found anything geared towards that? Thanks!

    Correct me if I'm mistaken - but it seems quite an effort to make a full workout, adding each exercise/reps and weights. And if you end up adding more weights on the 3rd or 4th sets? Can you edit that?
    Also, does it use the weights +/- reps to calculate calories burned during a strength training workout? Or does it just use HR data to calculate calories burned?

      Thanks for making awesome videos!

    Just tried the strength app today and it was very off. I was hoping for the same effectiveness as my moto 360 sport which uses google fit. The google fit app was way more accurate. I really wanted the V3m to do this well.

    Today I had my first strength training workout at the gym for the garmin forerunner 645 music. It was too much of editing here and there, that it made me rest too much. I ended up using my bodyspace app on my phone (good thing I brought my phone with me)... However, it did track my calories (I use a HR chest strap too). I don't think these watches are good for strength training. For running, cycling, and the like, perfect though.

    I just got this watch and I'm trying to use it to track my workouts calories burned heart rate all that good stuff. I like your video it's very informative and has helped me out but what about when you superset? I tried using it the other day and I don't want to waste time fiddling with my watch when I just want to move from one exercise to the next

    • @DesFit
      @DesFit  6 років тому

      You could predefine a workout in Garmin Connect web for supersets. But if you don’t want to fiddle with the watch at all, you may not benefit from the Strength app. It requires some interaction, unfortunately. I tried doing multiple exercises without manually changing sets and it almost always just came up as undefined exercise.

      DesFit so if I just want to be able to tell my watch I'm working out, where I can see time and heart rate, click start and just do my workout, which setting do you recommend I set it to?

    • @DesFit
      @DesFit  6 років тому +1

      You could just use the Cardio activity or you could create your own custom activity based on that activity profile where you could customize the screen layout to the data fields of your choosing.

      Can you change the weight and the repetitions within a superset? At the GC Webinterface I found only the function to repeat a whole exercise with the same settings. Or rather there are no specific sets actually.

    Hey Des. How do we know what each of the labeled strength training exercises are? Obviously everyone knows the name of the basic exercises like bench press. But, some of them have really unique names. I guess Garmin does not have descriptions or mini videos on their website.

    • @DesFit
      @DesFit  7 років тому

      +John Manley I don’t necessarily think Garmin needs to provide descriptions. This will be based on your fitness level and knowledge. I think most people will be fine with the more basic designations where some others with more knowledge can benefit from the more detailed and specific names. Think: VA3 vs fenix owner/No training status vs Training Status.

    Those reverse flys hurt to watch. You're putting your shoulders at risk by going through that much ROM with load. For strength training purposes, stop the movement at the moment your body makes a T shape.

    It just seems very clunky. I wont be using this feature in its current form.
    I use FitNotes app on android. A great free/ad free app for tracking workouts. Its fantastic, it can show progress over whatever time frame you want to select on a graph (1 wk, 3 months etc), gives you your actual 1RM on an exercise as well as an estimated 1RM if you have never tested a 1RM. It also very easily displays on one screen every time you've done a given exercise, the weight/reps you did those days, without actually having to leave your current workout screen. You can also set different rest periods for different exercises or link exercises into super sets to automatically jump between them and colour code the groups. And best yet, if like me you perform similiar workouts every week for a month or so before mixing up the exercises, it allows you to copy your entire workout (shoulders for example) onto this week, along with all the weights/reps you did last week but it leaves the tick boxes empty, so you can mark them off this week as you perform each set. This way you can aim to increase the volume you did in the previous workout without having to manually type everything in again or without jumping back to view the entry for last week to know exactly how many reps you actually performed.
    Did I mention its a free app and without ads?
    I think the real future for Garmin strength tracking would be in a functionality like this built into the Connect app OR better yet allowing syncing with an app like FitNotes that has been fine tuning this for years. In the same way that My Fitness Pal and Connect sync with each other. Most people carry their phone into the gym anyways so its less of a hindrance unlike for example when you go running (some people hate carrying their phone). Entering sets/weight on the watch is just a little clunky. On a smartphone screen it takes a few taps and its easier to see your whole workout laid out.
    Thats my 2 cents on it.

    As you've reviewed many types of fitness trackers you might be able to answer this question. Are the Garmin fitness trackers they only fitness watches that can identify exercises and count reps. I'm looking for a replacement of my vivosmart 3 and it seems that the other companies do not have products with this feature

    • @DesFit
      @DesFit  2 роки тому

      I believe Garmin is the only brand but it's generally just an attempt to identify - I'd say it's like a 30-40% accuracy on the type of exercise identified. Rep counting however is generally pretty good.
