I'm 45 and Tori Amos is still one of my favourites. Her first 3 albums in particular - Little Earthquakes, Under the Pink, Boys for Pele, and a lot of bsides, are my favourites.
Yup, agreed, 'iieee' is great. And 'The Waitress', also from the same session. That is a monster of a song to close with. Now I just found out 'Caught A Lite Sneeze' happened here too, (I haven't heard that version yet,) and I look forward to Jonny doing that one as well.
Tori has helped so many of us process and heal through her raw vulnerability. Always enjoy your reactions. Sending you and yours well wishes from Oregon.
I really recommend listening to 'The Waitress' live session '98, it's from the same session as this performance is from. About the anger in her lyrics, she grew up in a very religious household and community which she rebelled against in her music in the early years because religion always seemed to undermine women and women's experiences. She criticises herself in this song for people pleasing those good Christian boys and undermining herself, she referred to those behaviours in herself as 'sick', she's angry at herself for seeing them as something special, even when they insulted her, even going as far as to sleep with them even though they weren't particularly kind or respectful towards her. To me, the song is about letting go of illusions we cling on to and seeing things for how they really are. So happy to see you doing Tori! What a wonderful journey you have ahead of you. Also, she still plays with he same band after all this time.
I got to see Tori Amos in 1998... I had one seat to the side of front row center stage. Precious Things was and still is my favorite Tori song... she opened the show with it! Every time I see this version of it, it brings happy tears. Thank you... you should check out Bliss if you haven't.
Tori Amos, my witch and my best friend when i was a child. She teach me about life and love, and open my little mind. Hear her was like watching a dark paint of Goya
❤❤ Just found this on pop up on UA-cam 65yr oldfromUSA& Have to tell you Tori Amos is a Goddess..met in 1995..saw in concert 9 times back stage 7 on her bus twice..got to know her, & she literally saved me and my kids..early 2000's, last time I saw her and last time on bus...we'd talked alot before & she noticed my husband at the time was abusive 5th back stage time she saw him grab & yell..last time I had a black eye..Ex started yelling grabbed me and told me to leave, Tori got her people to take him out..took me on bus, gave me phone number of her personal assistant and set up a way for me and kids to get away..called number in 2 days though her and RAINN charity we had housing, a starter bank account with $500 therapy for me and kids & job for me...the Woman is an Angel Goddess..last talked on phone with her 2008❤❤❤ the post &Hope you don't mind Old Lady's Overshare ❤
This performance is the perfect example of why you do not need to play a 100 notes a second or need to do self gratifying displays of virtuosity, that in fact it is all about articulation, contrast, dynamics, intonation, layering, phrasing and restraint, which can be condensed into musical maturity.
This album came out when I was 16. My father was dying of cancer. I played this album over and over. To this day it still stirs so much emotions and memories
Check out Caught a Lite Sneeze live from 1996. It's just her and the piano so it's a very different vibe from this clip. Not only does it show off her incredible songwriting and musicality, it's also a showstopping vocal showcase of Tori's vocal magic
Tori with Steve Caton on guitar and Matt Chamberlain on drums is my favourite band band era of hers. Then the Night of Hunters tour with the string quartet Apollon Musagete was great as well.
Omg I hope you dive deeper into this show and her live stuff from like 1998-2003. From this show these songs: iieee; caught a lite sneeze: The Waitress. All AMAZING performances
@@bridgethegapreactions I knew 'iieee' and 'The Waitress' were played during this session, and I love both performances deeply. I cannot wait for your thoughts on them and I will be checking in regularly. However, this is the first time I learned 'Caught A Lite Sneeze' was played here, with Chamberlain and Caton and Evans (an absolute beast selection of masters for her to riff and jam with during a live show). I am so stoked. I will not look this video up, I will wait for your reaction and watch it for the first time with you. I love 'CALS' so much.
@@divatalk9011not sure I agree that she did. Her voice certainly changed, and with it came some strange enunciation and exaggeration of syllables. No cursive though
Hey Johnnie, I'm so glad you find Tori again. She's been a favor of mine for years and years. I would really love it. If you would consider reacting to her performance of Father Lucifer live from Letterman. She does an interesting mashup with some classic songs that I think you would find very interesting.
Tori deserves nothing less than a full deep dive. Most of her b-sides & soundtrack contributions are as good or better than her album songs. Her sound changes dramatically over the years, & imo the first 5 albums are her best. Especially Boys for Pele.
@@bridgethegapreactions watch her perform Butterfly I believe it was on Letterman too. From the Hjgher Learning soundtrack. Probably my favorite song of hers.
I can’t believe it took you this long either. 😉I remember recommending this right after you did reindeer king. Those hand gestures are for the bassist (Jon Evans) mostly. And yeah Matt Chamberlain might just be one of the best drummers I’ve ever seen. She has had them fine tuned since the first Plugged tour in 98. She is a preachers daughter and so the references to god, faith, church, etc all come up often. I hope you’ll continue the Tori journey. Thanks for checking this one off the list. For something on a completely different level sonically I’d recommend Yes, Anastasia, but every song from this recorded session is absolutely killer!!
Matt Chamberlain has played on so much good stuff, wow! Fiona Apple's first two albums, Laura Marling, Dylan, Randy Newman... Hey, at least I got to this eventually!
Just a few that really stand out to me: iieee from this same tv session, Cornflake Girl on the To Venus and Back album (live disc), Caught a Light Sneeze, Pretty Good Year, Marianne, and Spark. You must listen to SPARK.
I've never seen this performance before - intense! Toriphiles, guessing this was Choirgirl era? Jonny, please do a deep dive on her full albums! Little Earthquakes of course, but also From the Choirgirl Hotel and Under the Pink. (I would wait on Boys for Pele since it's one of her most experimental).
You need to listen to Winter live. It is probably the most stunning performance ever. I think you’ll love it aha I know I keep asking aha, but would still love to see some Kate Bush at some point aha 😉😅
Not something I figured out on my own, but I understand this was written in her very early twenties looking back on her high school days. I also noticed that the this is the first song you've heard from her amazing debut album, _Little Earthquakes,_ one that consistently makes lists like Rolling Stone's 500 greatest albums.
You really tend to react to the same 15 artists over and over. I don't know why. The only two reactions I have watched are Hole and this one. More grunge please. And yes, Tori Amos is grunge. Try PJ Harvey either Man Size or Me Jane. She writes all her own music, is grunge, you are missing out.
I’m so behind Johnny I didn’t realize you did this. You must react to one of the Montreaux shows I believe 1991 is the one I saw (on UA-cam) But there’s one from 1992. Someone else might be able to better explain this. She also did Precious Things on the Letterman. And it’s better than this. More raw.
The album version is so much better. Her voice and the instruments are lower and richer and it's phenomenal. Please have a listen if you haven't already.
Please find a Kate Bush performance that in any way equals this. So sick of that comparison. No offense to Kate but she can’t sing like this, she can’t play piano like this, she can’t write lyrics close to this, she doesn’t control a band like this, her performances are all the same. Enough already. They are two women who sing. That’s the only similarity.
I'm 45 and Tori Amos is still one of my favourites. Her first 3 albums in particular - Little Earthquakes, Under the Pink, Boys for Pele, and a lot of bsides, are my favourites.
Yes and the Crucify EP is a must listen for Johnny!
Little Earthquakes is a perfect album.
"Iieee" from the same session, in case you haven't covered this one yet. An unstoppable force.

Tori live is a beast! The albums are amazing but live she takes every song to another level.
Matt Chamberlain is the drummer. the two of them together is pure bliss.
Back then, a lot of the British press dismissed her as a cheap substitute for Kate Bush, but she was very much her own thing.
Love both. She's nothing like Kate.
I grew up on Tori. I had never even heard of Kate Bush until her song was re-released. 🤷♀️
Tori has helped so many of us process and heal through her raw vulnerability.

Thank you, much appreciated. I'm definitely interested in exploring her stuff a bit more, seems like a lot of depth there!

She is just Amazing,we love Tori
Thank you for doing Tori live. Love your reaction.
She consistently resonates with so many of us. She sings her pain and joy.
Yes!! I love Tori so much. I've seen her live twice almost 20 years apart and she was immense both times. Thanks ❤
Thank you for reacting to the piano Goddess! This is probably the best video live of this song ❤❤

Spellbinding artist. Her rendition of Nirvana's smells like teen spirit is haunting

Winter live is amazing.
Imagine being a 19 year old female when this came out. I immediately loved everything about her. I consumed Her musical wit and rage completely.
Crucify - Live 2002 Scarlet Sessions is one that’s been on replay for me lately. So ethereal and so grounded at the same time. She’s amazing.

Boys for Pele is THE best, tho.
You have to watch the whole concert. Top tier.
