  • Join me as I show you how I transferred some bees from a 5 frame nucleus hive to a 10 frame box on May 3, 2014.
    In this video I try to explain everything step by step and point out the interesting things I see as I go through the process.
    Hope you enjoy the video and find it informative!

    For identifying the frames I use coloured drawing pins .tacks I use the same colour which queens for that year would have.

    Don't set a lit smoker onto the top of a bee hive. Learned it myself the hard way. Set my smoker on the top of an outer cover and got busy inspecting. Moved onto the next hive and moved the smoker. About 3 or 4 hives later I looked back and all the bees in the hive I set the smoker on first were outside because...the outer cover had a hole burned in it. The tops of four frames got burnt too. Luckily I had a couple gallon jugs with water in them. So...don't be putting your lit smoker on the top of a bee hive unless it is sitting on a brick.

      Yikes! Sounds like quite the adventure! I usually keep my smoker right there with me but will try to pay closer attention moving forward.

      In my latest video I almost got in a mess lighting my smoker! I show the blooper at the end. Thanks again for watching.

    That seem much calmer now than they were before.

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  3 роки тому

      Yes these bees were pretty calm that day but it was several years ago and I think it must have been during a honey flow so the bees were happy.

    Its 2022. Do you still checkerboard the 5 frame NUC as it goes into a 10 frame box. Doesnt that make it difficult for the nurse bees to keep brood warm?

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  2 роки тому +1

      I would not do this if it were cold but when warm with a large population of bees they draw it out incredibly fast. I know some would never checkerboard but I have had very good success with it.

    Have not shaken any bees yet. As you said pheremones direct traffic. Why push the issue? Let them go their own way naturally. Nice video. The one handed beekeeper. Hail from Conecuh County!

      I have learned a lot since I produced that video. Mostly like you said that the bees are going to do what they want to do.
      The hand is doing well though the the repair failed and they ended up amounting the left index finger in January 2018. Now it is much better and fully functional and I have decided to produce more brucesbees videos!
      Thanks for watching and commenting. 🐝🙂

      Hand is doing well. Actually the repair of my finger failed and I had my left index fiber amputated in January 2018. Now it is doing much better with no deficits. Thanks for your concern.

    Do you have any hives with the itty bitty black bees i do and they are my favorite looking to get a queen rearing kit to graft off these little bitty black bees

      I have bees of all different colors. Most have some yellow to them though but many are very dark.

    Starting to acquire some Nuc boxes now for splits and swarm traps. Good information!! By the way...had a catastrophic table saw accident with my phone and no longer have your number:-) Text me some time if you don't mind. How many hives did you have back in 2014?

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  3 роки тому

      In 2013 I started with 2 and then bought 2 more. Split a couple of them and overwintered 6. Built up in 2014 I think to 15 or 20 but I am not sure exactly. And I think I lost several of those over the winter. I tried the treatment free thing for a couple of years with significant winter loss. Then started treating more and it grew from there. I honestly have lost count lol. Haven’t been able to keep up very well with inspections. I’m sure some of the hives are in a mess but doin the best I can.

    why do you stagger the frames?

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  8 років тому

      In this area it typically works well to stagger or checkerboard frames in this fashion. The bees tend to draw them out more quickly. This year however this has not been the best approach with some colonies as the honey flow has been so good that some hives have become honey bound when they draw these frames out and immediately fill them with honey.
      Many would argue that you should always keep the brood together. If in a cooler climate that would be critical but it gets very hot here and temperature this time of year is not an issue.
      Though many people think it is wrong to do it this way, if there are enough bees and it is warm enough, the bees do great using this approach.

      @@brucesbees Thx. If you dont' mind me asking, what software do you use to upload the video

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  3 роки тому

      Back then I would download it to my computer and I don’t remember what software I used. It was whatever was on my PC. Nothing fancy. Now I used iMovie and do it all on my phone. I am thinking about getting some nicer equipment and software though a d taking it to the next level but for now that is what I do. Nothing too fancy.
      I am trying to decide if it is worth the expense to purchase the more advanced gear.

    What table saw accident?

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  6 років тому

      Fritz Keller This was back in 2014. I decimated my left index finger March 29, 2014 with a careless table saw accident while cutting a board for a bee box. I had it repaired and back in Nov/Dec of 2017 the repair failed and I had a ray amputation if the left index finger in January of this year (2018). It is doing much better now and my hand is more functional without the finger. Never really worked quite right after the repair.
      I have learned a lot through this whole ordeal but now I am doing great! Thanks for your concern🙂

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  6 років тому +1

      silverlady I like to be able to keep track of when they were placed in a hive. I haven’t been as diligent the last couple of years but it does help to be able to know how old the frames are.
