This is VW’s First Electric GTI Car!

- Jack takes a look around VW's first ever GTI-badged EV, the ID GTI Concept. Based on the £25,000 ID.2all, this car promises to bring affordable driving thrills to the electric era, just as its GTI-badged predecessors have done for ICE power since the 1970s. But is it the real deal or, like so many performance-badged EVs, is this merely an aesthetic upgrade?

VW should have done this years ago, not 5 years in the future
kinda hard when you lose money on every EV sold
@@chidorirasenganz they had the e-Up, which they should have kept going. I heard they initially lost about 1000 Euros per Vehicle. OK, raise the price by 3000 Euros, then and make a next-gen that is specifically designed as an Electric. If these had been war times, the job would already have been done. There is no way that VW is an efficient operation.
Lose money?? - IF they Lise money it`s there Owen fault.
All car manufakturers have 2 choices: 1: get more Electric on the Road, cheap / 2: close
If not, in 10 years there`ll be TESLA en Chinese, everybody Else are bankrupt.
@@NisseOhlsen yup - people are always saying they lose money on their EVS. So... just don't do that? Design a car, get the costs low with modern production, charge an unfair price for the first hundred thousand, lower the price as the plant is paid off. Simples.
Instead they're just completely confused about how to build vehicles. Vertically integrate folks, it's the way of the rational.
They should have made this in the stone age so you could drive faster than the T Rex.
They're always sub £30k.. until they arrive in UK showrooms.
UK....= add 15% always 😢
@@TfRsmokinmastathats nothing. Here in Holland its a k’ching fest before our government allows them on the streets.. Although, still electric cars were possibly exempt but I’m not entirely sure.
£45k minimum this will be 🙄
@@maverlk7thanks Yoda.😁
@@metricstormtrooper 🤣
If it's genuinely under 30k then that's exciting. I still won't be able to afford one, but if it signifies a trend then that's great.
They said the i.d Buzz would be 40 grand
Great to see a sensibly sized car rather than the grotesque behemoths from other German manufacturers. The Mk 2 was my second car and one of the most fun.
The thing is that this is going to come up against the MG4 in the market. But when this arrives for real it won't have all the beautiful things Jack is imagining.. and it'll be more like £45k...
And.. It won't be the current MG4 but a version 3 or 4 that's better than the sporty version they've already introduced.
We might also have the baby Tesla ¿Model 2? by then. (And a baby Nio?)
Put simply, this will be eaten for breakfast in sales terms. VW have lost their edge. The sporty MG4 is already selling and this thing doesn't have an interior or tech specs!
Completely agree. I had one. Still my favourite car to own. The MK2 was everything a car needed to be. Quick but very practical. The ID2 is bigger then that car so I suspect it will appeal to families very quickly.
Why does size matter? Model Y is large, but also extremely efficient.
Size matters in countries with smaller roads and car parks. Some of the massive SUVs from the likes of BMW and Audi are anti-social.@@bilgyno1
@@bilgyno1 but it's also HUGE! And to work in the confined streets and spaces that is virtually every EU/UK towns and cities it's way to big for everyone to own. The ID2 and this sportier cousin are significantly more people friendly.
Good to see VW returning to their heritage . They went off track abit with the ID3,4 range. Bring back the buttons for eace of use and loose haptic touch sensitive interfaces as they only work now and again if the aea is only touhed just right.Lovely looking ID GTI Concept. Cant wait till it goes into production.
The base ID.2 looks like a banger if the changes are as described. Hopefully at the previously announced price.
Finally! an electric car that looks good and I’d buy.
It's definitely one of the best looking EV's.
yep definitely one of my favorties, along with the ioniq 5
This is an example of a car that is needed on the market pretty much now if the mainstream car manufacturers are not going to completely lose the lower cost segment of the market to Chinese brands like BYD and MG.
If Tesla manage to do the Model 2, it’ll be game over. I wonder if investors are looking to short VW. 🤔
Well... Tesla needs to deliver, a truck, semitruck and a roadster first.@@deetee6621
Honestly this is the exact car I've been waiting for. If it comes to the US then I don't see myself waiting too long to pick one up. Currently driving a 2017 Fiat 500e so a small, cheap car, that is capable of over 100mi is a genuine godsent. However if it doesn't, it's either gonna be the new Mini SE or importing a Cupra lol. I loved the Mini SE when it came out, but $35k for a 100mi car was genuinely oscinine. Now that the 2024-25 is supposed to be a 200+mi, the GTI and the SE seem like they'll be decent competitors.
If you have a 2017 500e, then it's a compliance model built on the ICE chsssis. The 2020 500e is a ground up EV with more room inside. It's also externally bigger than the ICE variant.
This is the perfect car for me as well. I plan to upgrade my current 17 GTI to this if it comes to the states. I don't even want to wait for first year bugs to be ironed out I want the first year model.
Come on VW be nice to the states, let me be loyal to the GTI line!
But you won’t be able to get one until 2027. There’ll be better Chinese made cars out there well before then.
@natashathegrei3390 It looks lovely, but the GTI title is a marketing ploy like the Porsche Taycan Turbo.
@@jeremyradford5103 This is true. I kinda forgot about the newer 500e simply because Fiat essentially pulled out of the US a handful of years ago to my recollection. At least around where I am in Washington, the only model they sell is the 500X and the only dealership I ever saw got turned into a Tesla one.
What I hate about current car manufacturers is every model is getting so much longer and taller and of course heavier all of which destroy both the economy and handling -the current Golf is so big you can actually fit an entire mk3 Golf in the boot. This actually along with the new Volvo EX30 both look ideal as not everybody wants a car the size of a bus to drive around.
Certainly in USA and Australia, and rapidly spreading, is that bigger is better. Even better if it rolls around like a jelly and drives like shit.
Oh for a ... car without SUV in the name.
Agree 💯
Humans getting taller and fatter and heavier . Safety laws means heavier and that's before batteries. Buyers want bigger low profile (heavier) tires. Only lightweight materials and cutting drag avoids it getting worse
@@tomooo2637 Not everyone wants a tiny car with room for a handbag and a pair of socks in the back, either!
@@stephendoherty8291 what people want is usually based on lies. Statistics and evidence shoes that SUV are more dangerous to be in and trucks more so. They all bar one, fail the standard crash avoidance test, they stop in a greater distance than the equivalent car, and are much more likely to roll over and kill you.
Looks clean. Almost reminds me more of the Mk6 styling than the Mk8
True, but still looks too much like MK8. I love the retro clusters - I hope that comes to production. I'll believe it when I see it. If its still on MLB, it will be coming out 2 generations behind as Tesla continues to pull away in advanced manufacturing but if they build it right (better get on the giga-casting bandwagon!), and soon, sign me up!
And that is a compliment! Mark 8 is overstyled.
This REALLY gives me warm feelings. My very first new car purchase was an '85 GTI in this same Mars Red color. The GTI was a move up from my '74 Opel Manta Rally, which was itself a bit of a tossable fun car. I drove the GTI for 16 years. If I wasn't 66 years old I would be making plans to get one of these, but I am resigned to just watching them from the sidelines and enjoying the enjoyment others will get from driving them.
BTW the '85 GTI had the coldest air conditioner I have ever experienced which was greatly appreciated here in Texas.
What an amazing concept, a fast, exciting and fun electric car. If only someone had done this years ago.
That's a beautiful car, dare I say better looking than the vw golf and id3
Been waiting for an electric hot hatch that I can buy in the US for ages...
Fell in love with the id2 when it was announced and now the GTI is even nicer! I cannot wait for it!!
Looks nice. Would be delighted, but VERY surprised, if they can make the ID2All for €25k. 🤞
2018 VW ID Neo concept was supposed to be 25k also. How much is an ID.3 now?..
Looks fantastic, just the right balance of nods to the past without being overly retro or a caricature of previous models. I would definitely buy it.
So, its the previous ID2 concept car with a sexy paint job on a CLAY MODEL. Well, that will be in the dealers in no time, not. And vapour-ware interior .....
Looks good. The external styling is a better effort than the new BMW Mini EV.
Only one word...moist. Truely a step in the right direction for VW and their EV line. More of this please, and sooner :)
Love it! Except for the sticker/stripe on the back. Great walk around btw!
love the design, love the fact that they actually reduced the size of a model for once, would love the price if they actually managed to hit it but we'll see about that.
Jack and the Scarlett GTI. A match made in heaven.
Fun? Fun driving? Good. Corners are also available! Amused by the homage to the Pirelli wheels on the original. Hoping I can fit my 6'4" frame and size 14 feet inside a sporty VW EV.
It's a concept. I'll believe it when I see it in a customers hands looking precisely like that with precisely those specs and prices.
Exactly. Concept cars are easy, mass production is hard. I'll be amazed if this thing is $30k or less and be profitable.
I'm curious how VW simulates the mk1 handling experience given that this will have a heavy battery under it while the mk1 was an extremely light car. Maybe they've figured out how to defy physics.
I really hope ID.2 and GTI come to the US
This or the ID2 are likely to be my next car. I love my ID3, but it is a bit boring and the interface is terrible. Looking forward to hearing when these will be available and perhaps they'll do a Cupra version too and not release it 6 months after I get a new car 😂
The next iD3 will not be terrible.
The interface will still be terrible.
Tesla model 2 will no doubt be superior and better value
@@chargeheadsuk until Tesla ditches Musk, I'll be giving it a miss 😊
@@YPSLeser I'm hoping for physical buttons
Hey Jack. Love your work 👍
Great CG work here!!
Oh man, I do love me a hot hatch; make it an EV hot hatch and I'm just beside myself. VW needs to make this ASAP and bring it to the US this time!
Would you buy it without a tax credit, at likely 40k+(based on current gti prices) and with 220 or less epa miles of range though?
The autofuegel channel guy said his sources qouted about 220-240 miles wltp, minus another 10-15% off that for the epa range.
@@4literv6 That range is a bit rough, and $40k seems a bit high based on the EUR price. If it were in the low $30k range I'd consider it even with 200 miles of range.
@@human_brian it'll be built in Spain though, so ad import tariffs and currency conversion rates.
Plus look at current ice gti prices in the U.S. most near me in ATL are 35-40k+ depending on options without dealer markups.
Some even more than that. It's a low volume cult following in good times type of car.
So far evs have carried a 10-20% price premium over a similarly specced out ice model even within the same manufacturer lineup.
But maybe by late 2026 or early 2027 vw can pleasantly surprise on the price? 🤔
This type and size of car is what the market wants , something cool and affordable ....
Totally agree. This is the electric VW we’ve been waiting for. I.D 3/4/5 just don’t do anything for me at all. I can’t wait to have the 80s dials if I want to. It’s unbelievable that no car maker seems to have made digital dials as versatile and playful as they could be. I was designing dashboards with screens that could display information in different styles 40 years ago when I was 10. It’s about time we saw that in cars. Instead we have Abarth making tiresome noises and VW making fiddly non-backlit buttons… 🤦🏽♂️
Always enjoy your reviews Jack. As a long time VW fan, I'm so here for this!
Finally a good-looking ID. The tinted windows and perfect lighting in the studio make it look clean like a 3D-model. The only downside is that start-date of 2025. Why the hell do VW need that long if they have the whole thing designed and it's not running on a new platform (or is it?). Certainly the best ID, yet.
Do not worry, 2025 is of course a joke. It will be 2027 or better 2030. We are talking about VW. Announcing and promising since forever. I´ve seen the BUZZ concept somewhere around 2012, supposed to be on the road by 2016. Or the ID3, nothing like promised, 3 years late and without software.
Nahhh, this is a model shell to show something on the motor show. Nothing more.
We need more of this. Everyone's out there trying to make the best generic mid-sized crossover appliance, or the best hyper-expensive hypercar. There's no fundamental reason an EV can't be practical and engaging, and I hope VW finds the right balance between those like they did with their first-generation hot hatches.
I would so buy this! Such a sporty looking car, just wish their tech was on par with Tesla
Well at least this has 4 wheel disc brakes finally. A heat pump finally. Lfp for base pack's and truly massive 125kw charging in 2026. 😀
They have also aggressively stomped on any conjecture for an awd version coming out. Saying gti is fwd only and gtx awd is for other model's.
to each their own but i don’t think a car should be judged on tech alone
unlikely as it may be since it’s a VW, but it may just be a more enjoyable ride
@@konohanin8686 modern fully iot connected, ota updateable evs are now basically tech on wheels though.
It's only going to continue that way as well. So what OTHER choice do manufacturers have in order to compete on a global stage. 🤔
@@4literv6 that’s the development i don’t like, nowadays the financially viable thing for a manufacturer is just to throw in one or several huge screens, and if it wasn’t for the car doing so much, we’d probably see a noticeable increase in accidents where the driver wasn’t paying attention
On the plus side, at least VW's panels line up
The wheels are nice, bit silly on the sidewall though. They're like racing tyres, wouldn't do well on the roads where I'm from
Finally a good looking ID. ...Pretty!
The ID.2all looks so damn good, I love it! I guess it's supposed to be an electric polo, but it definitely reminds me of my '97 Golf IV. In fact, I have this book about the Golf IV and the concept drawings of it in 1997 kinda look like the ID.2all 🤔 It's like they dreamt big in 1997 and have finally achieved their desired design xD
Oh yeah, thats gorgeous, i could get excited for that.
If they sell it looking just like this then it's a guaranteed winner!!
This is exactly what I have been waiting for
Looks great. Thank you.
Hopefully this + the base ID.2 make it to the US eventually. Looks great.
I hope the ID 2 and this concept make it to the states, with a sticker price not so bloated from the voyage across the pond.
Tesla's 25,000 $ model coming year 2025 from GigaMexico
By the time this is being build, if it ever gets build, Tesla will have a Model 2 or 1, simply Tesla, on the market. VW is so far behind and looses so much money, it will be interesting to see whats left in 2027 or better 2030 when this is suppose to come.
that thing looks sick!! 🔥🔥🚒
Wow it brings back good memories
4:15 Those wheels touch on the original, super cool, Pirelli P-slot look.
Looks amazing, very excited to see this coming, design language looks right, it’ll all be about power and range for me.
Amazing, to me a child of the 80’s it definitely looks like a golf to me.
Love the Fire Engine 🚒 Red colour.
It’s definitely what’s needed affordable cars
Best I can say atm is 'interesting'. Hope they keep that handle free back door design. Adds an element of 2 door coupé to an otherwise boring 4 door design.
Would much rather them design an EV based around the most recent Scirocco design.
Damn, I was hoping it was RWD, like many of its rivals. That's how you convert a Jeremy Clarkson to electric motoring: RWD hatchbacks.
Polestar just changed their single motor to RWD and changed the bias of the dual motor car to be more RWD where before it was more evenly split (we have that dual motor performance version and it's so much fun).
No idea why they wanna stick with FWD while going EV for single motor cars when RWD will always be advantageous.
Does it have tow capacity?
Jack smashing another vid out of the park as per usual... :)
Well it's all very nice but when can I walk in to a dealership and order one of these?
Does it come with a Check Engine light on?
Looks great
This is exactly what we need to see more of.
I love the design approach with this one!
Has lots of potential, i just can't see VW not screwing it up at this point sadly.
Looks great but i doubt it will be anywhere near 25k, look that good when it arrives and be all that quick
That’s a very nice looking car! Hopefully that version won’t be too expensive! 🤞
Depending on range I do like the look of this. Likely between this and Tesla Model 2 for my first electric car when my current lease runs out in a few years.
Finally they do what they are good at. Hope they do the software and pricing right :)
Love this, reminds me of toy cars I’d play with as a kid
Beautiful!
Thanks Jack.
Looks cool 😎
looks great....
Looks great!! Just need these from VW now, not in 2-3 years 😢
Thank you
Love it…want one!
This has yo be the best looking EV i've ever seen
the old skool skin clocks would be a very cool touch, really hope vw pulls this off, as a former vw owner and enthusiast from a mk2 until after the mk5 i really lost the vw bug and the whole platfrom just lost its way in my opinion, wouldnt even consider a new vw now, but the gti ev for the company car list would sway me for sure.
I really love the looks just hope VW sort out any software problems before it arrives as it’s a really lovely car in red.
We bought a citroen c4 1.6hdi grand Picasso.
I've got back to diesel guys. No more huge loans and endless worries! We just drove to Poland and it was easy.
As a former gti 6spd owner, this might be the most interesting and desirable EV I've seen yet. I hope these get to the US sometime in the next decade. Looking at you, VW.
Audi 80 GTE was 1976. I had one with GTI engine rhd. Great car. Three years before GTI 1979 rhd. One in the shed.
Germany auto OEMs have still been slowing down their EV efforts across the board - hopefully this doesn't get caught up in it. I think it'll struggle to compete with the MG4 X-power too.
Certainly on performance but not on price if it's truly sub £25k
@@jeremyradford5103I'll bet my shoes this car won't be 25k.
@esm7708 Unless they build it in China. The standard range MG4 is just under 27k, but the X-power is 36k, so we'll have to wait and see. Who knows what battery prices will be in 2-3 years!?
@@jeremyradford5103 I suppose the problem is you can get an MG today and by the time the VW comes it will be out of date. Just like the ID3.
@esm7708 Indeed. To be honest, if VW wants to go down the nostalgia route, they should bring out a beetle EV based on the original design as far as possible.
At last! The BEV that I actually, without reservation, want.
I love it!
This car looks really promising
Very good price point
Exciting - for all the young and older kids! Looks really good.
I love the silver one !
Fabulous! 🏜🕺🏻🐕🏖
Great episode; hope the GTI is too.
The retro-dash already sold me. I like this. Just Sportsvan-ify this and I'll be really happy.
So well said! Agree with everything! Looks awesome! Finally an EV that doesn't look horrendous! Excited to see what they will do with the ID.1 aswell!
This GTI looks achingly good. Front end design and stance is just awesome.
Will there be a NA version??
Looks like that have nailed the design. Much better that previous 2 versions
Yes yes yes!! Release it now! ❤❤❤
shame it is not RWD, but incredible to see smaller EV's coming to the market
is the current POLO size?
Finally!!!! VW has remembered its roots in the past and all the greatness it brought the world! Here comes the electric hot hatch segment full on! Bravo VW, Bravo!!!!
Great to see this. This is what electric cars needed. I hope the drivetrain and handling live up to the looks!
I remember when the GTI used to be gas powered. And the thrill I got when I put my foot down. I will not get that when driving a microwave.
I want it! And I want it now!! Would buy it as it stands there ^^
