Volkswagen has signalled its intent to be a dominant force in the sub-£22,000 electric car market with the unveiling of a new ID. 2all concept car. Destined for production in 2025, the new model is one of 10 all-new electric cars scheduled to launch by 2026, and is likely to be a big seller if the brand is able to bring it to market at its projected price.
Unveiled at a special launch event in Hannover, Germany, the ID. 2all is expected to be called simply ID.2 when it arrives in 2025. It will be based on a new, smaller version of the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform - a universal set of underpinnings onto which any number of body shapes can be built. The smaller MEB platform (officially called MEB Entry) will be used across the Volkswagen Group, with Škoda and Cupra set to introduce their own versions of the ID.2 shortly after the VW-badged model arrives.
But will this be the car to open electric driving to the masses? Join Tom and Tomi as they take a closer look at VW's new baby. Which one do you agree with? Is the new ID.2 a great design, or has Volkswagen taken a backward step? Let us know in the comments below.

Non designers will view current Ev design as trash. Like when car manufacturers discovered how to use plastic In the 1980s, we’re currently seeing crap design as the new generation of designers over design in their dream design jobs. The id.2 seems to have overcome over-design and is almost perfect.

@@davidorama6690 I think that's a bit of a generalisation. If you look at the Porsche Taycan (all variants), Honda e, Morris J E (commercial van concept), Jaguar I Pace, MG roadster concept, Lotus Eletra and Hyundai Ioniq 5. All are bold and in my opinion well executed designs. The majority of EVs though lack appeal.

As a 'VW Fan-boy', I was terribly distressed with the ID 3 & 4/5 offerings. The window buttons, the very cheap (unlike VW) interior quality. There was nothing to make me feel I wanted any of them! But, the ID 2ALL concept is finally looking like what a VW EV should look like! I especially love the retro dash design making it look like my old MK1 Golf GTi! Mr. VW, please keep the costs down and make it a true VW (a true people's car)!

Yep, cannot agree more. Reserved and test-drove VW ID4 and was way underwhelmed. Design (blah), interior fit & finish, power, even value (price for what you get) were all acceptable but subpar, and certainly not exciting. This and to a lesser extend ID7 are a big step forward in the right direction.

Yes! this has VW DNA. ID offerings to date are dull and lacking "VW-ness" The presenters kind of threw the design under the bus, but I disagree, it is a nicely honed design that is all VW. Not everything has to be a reinvention! the basics of packaging is outstanding for an everyday "people's car". We need affordable everyday electrics. If they can bring it for the price targeted, this will be a winner!

This car has restored my faith in VW. I was going to update my Golf 7 to the 8 but was appalled by the lack of physical controls for climate and volume. The ID3 did not appeal either, because it looks nothing like a VW inside or out. But this new ID2 is a return to form. It has the classic aesthetic feel of a Polo, and the tech of a 21st century car. It’s great to see VW back on track.

If this goes on sale in the UK @£22k I'll eat my hat. Heard it all before, speculation about affordable EV's but goes out the window as soon as the official in country launch is announced. If the likes of MG, Fiat, Honda etc can not sell at this price point, how can VW??

    • @JetsetDruid
      @JetsetDruid Рік тому

I wouldn't be surprised if they got close to that price point.
Fiat and Honda are both not volume manufacturers in the EV market (and given the lowish range of their two cars most would argue they are compliance cars rather than serious attempts to enter the EV market), MG are probably hampered by taxes levied on Chinese products the 64 kWh MG4 costs $19k in China (cnevpost.com/2022/09/14/saic-launches-mg-mulan-in-china/) which is about £15k.

Boring looks are fine for me if the car's specification (space/ range etc) are good. It even has a rear wiper which scores points for me over some EVs.
If the battery is under the floor I'd be a bit worried that rear passenger comfort would be compromised by a floor that's too high (as seems the case with some non-SUV EVs) so would it be good to see how the concept gets turned into reality.

I absolutely love it. The problem is...I'm Canadian, and it sounds like we won't be getting this here. Actually, likely we'll get a CUV with a larger pricetag, heavier weight and taller ride height; all 3 of which would suck. I was a throwback to a mk2 or mk3 Golf-sized car.

I love it. I had 3 Golf 2s, and I like this as much. I hope the screens will be OLED, and we can get rid of the colour gradients in the background and replace them with black. The retro Golf graphics would then be stunning. I will continue with my current Polo until this launches, and it is on my list of my first EV.

"Street furniture" about summed it up for me! As an ID3 owner (Ex Golf ), the exterior appears a backward step and not a retro one. Compared to the current and due to be refreshed ID3, the ID2all is too bland and in its base spec, I'm guessing near invisible. On a positive, a VW ID interior that looks like they are back in the game. The need for physical buttons for the climate and volume has been recognised and interior quality, looks more like that of the pre Golf 8 ..... now thats the retro I really like. Now praying Cupra do their magic to the exterior.

Guessing neither of you saw the skateboard platform that VW issued to the press showing how it would look and it was clear it had the space to put that large storage in the back they show, yes no frunk but it's made up for by the other storage and the under seat storage is fantastic for the backseat. I like it though the sooner it can get to production the better. Suspect zero towing capability though and unsure on roof box or not. For that charging speed suspect it's an 800V system.

VW sells more Skoda EVs in NL than it sells their own brand. Interior wise they clearly looked at the Enyaq. It think it is the right balance between modern, clean and functional, yet still having an nice atmosphere to be in. Finally not an overcompensating designer who puts his own personal opinions and need to differentiate above looks and designes that are loved by the customer. Really hope they will keep the lights design as well. If the actual car will look like this, this will be our next car.

I love everything about this car. I drive cars forever (Tacoma with 170k, Subaru with 100k). I want a practical, reliable car that can carry me and my stuff - groceries, dog, weekend luggage, etc. I love buttons so I can literally feel my way to controls. Front drive with proper winter tires will work great. If it comes to the US, I am a buyer if the quality is solid. As far as design, make a upper "GTI" style one with better seats, understated trim embellishments, and nice wheels and I'm even happier! Oh, keep all safety features!

I think VW did the right thing with this car. One of the major push backs from more conservative motorists has been that EV are too futuristic and to expensive. I think this tackles both challenges very cleverly. As far as your comments about the battery and range etc. They will probably do what other EV manufactures do, have different models targeted at different specs. IE, a range model that has a bigger battery, but also a town version with smaller battery but more boot space etc. I like the fact that they have buttons, and stalks. That is major bug bear for me.

I am a confirmed petrolhead and have a limited interest in electric vehicles-but I will watch this with interest. As a fan of VW-I have owned 6 air cooled beetles, and have had a Mk1 golf, Mk1 Jetta, Passat Saloon, 3 Passat estates, and a Mk6 Golf GTTDI-our current car is a Skoda Yeti which we love and won’t part with. I have been looking at small cars as when we sell our motorhome I will need a car and don’t need something with a massive range. I watched a video a couple of days ago where this was discussed and the cars they were recommending were £50-60,000! I will be 75 this year and think that whatever I end up with will probably be the last vehicle I buy……

I love the idea of this car, a small capable electric car would be amazing as a 2nd car, only would be nice to get a 4 wheel drive edition of the same car such as R-Series Golf etc.
Only bad thing about the editing here is that the background people noise is distractingly loud, pretty easy to remove nowadays so i would take a look at that 👌🏻

Depends on the charge capacity and millage you can get, this might be the perfect EV. small and compact but comfy interior, and perfectly designed! physical buttons?! in 2023?!. love it
Personal worry, they say it will be 25k euro, which is around 100k nis, before taxes (which are high in Israel), that means we are looking at a 140-150k nis EV, around the price range of a Korean compact SUV. which a lot of people prefer. I worry how well we'll receive it here

VW is making an important move because all EV cars these days are expensive and not for the people, and the Volkswagen should be for the people... So with that price tag and the fact it is a small car is a very smart move and people that has been thinking a while to switch to EV can finally do so without getting broke.

If they deliver on their promises (especially price), it will be a HUGE success.
It will also brutally force brands like Peugeot/Fiat to rethink their EV strategy, as they currently offer popular 200-300km range EVs of similar/smaller size at a €30-35k price.
2025 will be an interesting year in the car industry.

I really LOVE the design of this vehicle but if VW start going down the‘subscription’ route for aspects of the car I will buy something else. I WILL NOT pay monthly for something that is already built in to a car. Additionally, I think that 22k for a car of this size is quite expensive actually. Many manufacturers have been getting a bit carried away with prices for some time now. Cans are no more expensive to produce than they were 2/3 years ago but the price tag seems to head ever northwards.

I like the price - current EVs are too expensive, but will it still be around £22k in two years time? Not sure I like the look of the centre console. The id.3 feels different because it minimized that and lost the diff tunnel. However, as the presenters said, there's usually a big difference between the concept car and the production model.
