Astute point, my friend. Page's licks and phrasing on Since I've Been Loving You without question draw their inspiration from Blues legends such as B.B. King, Albert King, Freddie King, and Otis Rush, but Page veers into Spanish Flamenco territory at times during this solo -- particularly how he (I'm not sure how to describe it) plays a phrase with a "majestic", "noble", "punctuated" yet fluid feel. Page's solo in Achilles Last Stand has the same feel. I employ that feel in my playing rather frequently. It's less about technical chops, and more about dramatic flair. Carlos Santana has mastered this feel too. It's quintessentially Latin.

All the blues on led zeppelin don't sound obvious like all blues! which delights in its obviousness. really, but these led zeppelin blues are genius, I've been playing guitar for many years and I don't understand where jimmy page invented it, where he picked up certain notes that are not obvious and it sounds so beautiful.

In the key of C minor in case anyone is wondering always good to know what key songs are in before you try and learn them that way you have an idea what you are about to learn and won't get lost as long as you know your keys and scales it makes learning anything a little easier
Thank you, that will definitely make it a lot easier, now I know what scale he's playing, I can work out what he extra notes Jimmy is playing outside of the Pentatonic scale. I noticed after you said the key, that he is leaning in the 2nd (or 9th) note from the scale (not normally in the pentatonic) this will help me a lot with my soloing.
@@chrisparti exactly he mixes major and minor scales in with pentatonic scales in the same key. Jimi Hendrix and Randy Rhoads did that as well. Actually a lot of people mix major minor scales with pentatonic usually in separate phrases or runs
@@pagerhoads1531 I've started doing that myself only very recently.... e.g. the C major and Am scales, I've only started using it in the first major position so now I need to expand it into the other positions too. I found learning the major scale actually helped me better understand the notes in the minor pentatonic scale too, as previously I had just been playing minor pentatonic licks using those scale patterns, with no idea whether I was playing a root note or a 3rd 😁
That's so funny... a million years ago I asked my guitar teacher that I wanted to learn this song... more than a month I asked and asked the closest he could come was it's in the key of C and you don't need to learn the song... I went and got another guitar teacher the very next week... today I finally get to learn and play the song a million years later

Ok... so what I learned from this is that the intro is a heck of a lot more complex than just the simple c pentatonic I was getting away with repeatedly lol! New found appreciation for the genius of Jimmy Page! And you my friend are a master for figuring this all out!

Wow, thanks for the swift response! That makes sense to me. I'm a guit player of 35 years+ with a trained ear. I refer to your videos since I found you on here as a more dependable source than many to get to the bottom of songs when I feel I could use a little more accuracy on fast notes, chords etc., i.e. Eruption lol, I was one that never learned the body of it and due to habitual fingering patterns, I struggle with those notes in the 20th-21st frets to get up to speed. complete beginner, thought it would be fun to pick this song as my first one. three days into playing guitar at all and iv'e picked the intro (the pull-off still week, and no viberto on the bending) and some of the first verse. let's see for how long i can pull this off (i'm hoping to get minimum to the guitar solo)/ BTW thank you very much Carl, you'r posting quality videos for basically free, you'r on the reasons iv'e picked this instrument
I'm trying to decide if you're a baller or a masochist. I'd say try starting with something a lot easier that you also enjoy but in some ways the most important thing is to enjoy the time you put in. If this is your passion, I guess go for it. I will say this...this song is brutal for speed, dynamics, and timing. Get a metronome (or metronome app), start slower than you think you need to, and slowly ramp up to full time. Then try to play along with the recording. Best of luck!

Good that you are going through the riffs which are helpful but I think it would be much easier to pick up if understood within the context of the chord progression of the song! Took me a few minutes into the video before I realized the song is in the key of Dm. Once you realize this, you’re 1-4-5 “Blues Senses” start to make everything click together!

I have a good ear. I don't know exactly all the notes I'm playing but I can play note for chord with you on lead. But maybe it's just me, maybe your channel is for nothing but pro's but sir, you need to go a little bit slower when explaining. Thank you.

Michael Neas he moves on too fast, he only plays each part once and i have to rewind over and over again cuz i didnt hear what he said and honestly its really difficult to be able to learn when 50% of my lesson is rewinding to previous part
I'm sorry, I don't mean to be too harsh by any means, but obviously this lesson is not for a beginner. Perhaps, if you learn your chords, scales, modes, bends, pull offs, hammer ons, slides and so on it will make a lot easier. Also listening to the song closely and a lot would help. By the way, this is a video lesson. You're supposed to stop, rewind it and play it as many times as necessary. And the best of all, it's FREE! My only qualm with this particular lesson is him not telling the name of the chords when he's doing the double stops or fragments of the cords. After you play them, you know. It would just make easier and faster to navigate just by listening and not having to look at the screen. But it's a minor detail... He's a great teacher, though! I would just spend more time learning those those things I mention above. It'll be worth while and you'll pick these things up very quickly. I hope I din't sound too harsh and I hope the advice helped. Peace

A little late , but I believe he is using both pick ups out of phase on his les Paul to get that rolled back sound . Or he's using them both in phase with it rolled back on both pick ups . Sounds out of phase to me but I know on one of his wiring diagrams he had it so he could play them both in phase as well

I see there are 16 dislikes to this lesson. I cant understand how anyone could dislike this lesson. it was great, in fact anything i can learn is awesome thank you! Carl... as a hobbyist learning guitar on my own I wonder if this solo and riffs are in a particular key and scale mode its hard for me to follow the patterns I assuming its minor pentatonic ?..excuse my ignorance The backing track i found on you tube is in Cm is that correct?
Michael Neas he moves on too fast, he only plays each part once and i have to rewind over and over again cuz i didnt hear what he said and honestly its really difficult to be able to learn when 50% of my lesson is rewinding to previous part
Yes, I do much rewinding,, I believe you really have to master the scale patterns till its second nature….keep pickin
What scales would I use to go along with this song? How do I find out the key it is in and then practice the scales in those keys? Thanks!

I'm sorry, I don't mean to be too harsh by any means, but obviously this lesson is not for a beginner. Perhaps, if you learn your chords, scales, modes, bends, pull offs, hammer ons, slides and so on it will make a lot easier. Also listening to the song closely and a lot would help. By the way, this is a video lesson. You're supposed to stop, rewind it and play it as many times as necessary. And the best of all, it's FREE!
My only qualm with this particular lesson is him not telling the name of the chords when he's doing the double stops or fragments of the cords. After you play them, you know. It would just make easier and faster to navigate just by listening and not having to look at the screen. But it's a minor detail... He's a great teacher, though!
I would just spend more time learning those those things I mention above. It'll be worth while and you'll pick these things up very quickly. I hope I din't sound too harsh and I hope the advice helped.

A little late , but I believe he is using both pick ups out of phase on his les Paul to get that rolled back sound . Or he's using them both in phase with it rolled back on both pick ups . Sounds out of phase to me but I know on one of his wiring diagrams he had it so he could play them both in phase as well
