I’ve been listening to this song for 36 years, and after learning to play it - it still blows my mind how Page composed this song. The passages are so ridiculously alluring……. Just a masterpiece.
To think most of us old guys tried playing this out of the " Complete Led Zep " book. No wonder it sounded so wrong and impossible, it was written in standard in the book, what a nightmare ! Carl nails it.
I remember. Haven't put my guitbox back in standard tuning since Carl taught me this one. Haven't worn out a record or phono needle since I found the good folks on UA-cam.
That's true, haha. I remember it well. However it was possible to get a reasonable version in standard tuning and it also gives you a better grasp of the remarkable chord structures that Jimmy used. What a remarkable composer he is.
Adamfront yeah, I had a book, just the notes - no tabs - and figured out measure for measure where to best put my fingers. It did sound great though every time I managed to wrestle my fingers into the next position but no way I could play this fluidly. I’ll have a go at this alternative tuning version tomorrow morning.
Btw, it is indeed five and a half levels easier in the alternate tuning. Well worth the two minutes it takes to tune it into. This is my all-time favourite Led Zeppelin song and I have been trying on and off over the years to play it in standard tuning. I saw them perform this in London in 1975 when I was a 17-year-old and it brought tears to my eyes; it still does and playing it now for myself, thanks to you, is having that same effect.
Thanks Carl. The guitar on this song has been a complete mystery for me ever since it came out. You have taken our collective consciousness up to a higher level with this lesson. Thumbs way up.
I've been "strumming" chords over 40 years and have never really taken the plunge to learn more complicated songs (normally I don't use a pick). Enter: Stay at Home/Quarantine orders (NYC). Thanks for this post. Over the past 20 years I have primarily focused on writing and recording. 10 albums later I now am trying to remember songs I grew up with. Downloaded my LZ album and Rain Song played. I thought that would a good one to learn. Back in the 70’s I figured out all those songs starting and stopping my vinyl records. Never figured out this one. PROBABLY because of the alternative tuning. Your rendition is spot on and I am loving playing this now. Thank you so much! Steve Simon Music.
I have been playing guitar for a long time I still suck but I love playing. I am 59 years old and it is going to be my goal to learn this song. Thank you so much for your tutorial. You did it in way where I can learn it.
This song is so beautiful. The way you break it down makes it super easy to play. The trick is to nail the transitions so there’s no long pauses. Could take a while but it’ll be worth it.
It always amazes me how guitarists come up with such iconic moving melodies!! I pick up my guitar, strum it a few times, sounds like shit and promptly put it back in the corner of the room staring at it with morbid bewilderment.🤨🧐🤔😶
yO know by the time Jimmy formed Zeppelin he had already played for the Yard birds and as a studio musician since he was 18 in 1962 where he pretty much played for everyone in London music scene, people knew he would make it.. Consistence & persistence is priceless to success besides talent!!
Wow! I started playing the guitar over 30 years ago and never attempted to play this song until seeing this lesson. Excellent tutorial and thank you for sharing this with us.
Great lesson! Learned this off tabs a decade or two ago, absolutely loved playing it but hadn't bothered to tune my guitar to this odd tuning again until yesterday. Have probably played it all the way through (with your help) 5-10 times and got it down good again. One of my absolute favorites to play on acoustic. Long live Jimmy Page!
You are hands down the best guitar teacher I've found on UA-cam !! Spot on and clear and even tempo. Very cool. I really appreciate you taking the time and effort to do this !!! 👍
Thank you for showing the correct tuning and correct way to play this song. I have played it in two other tunings, but this the way Page did it. Thank you!
Thanks for this. I’ve tried to play in std. and G tunings and didn’t sound right. I like your delivery, no wasted words or time. And once you’ve shown the passage you show your chops by playing what you’ve just finished demoing with wonderful fluidity. Really nice job that will push me along.
I highly appreciate this lesson, I’m getting through it nicely. I’ve been a guitar player and lyricist for over a decade, this was surprisingly not too hard. I hope to be able to play this at a quiet gig on a rainy day some day. Would be a pleasant sound to the crowd. Rain Song is probably my favorite Zep song. Cheers
Marty and Justin have good videos too but I get more of a "just to get you started/having fun" vibe from them. THIS guy gets down to business and takes you through it all. My go to man for ANYTHING I wanna learn --- and he ALWAYS has it. P.S. I like to add the low E string at the 5th fret for that opening chord. Gets that opening chord nice n' rich.
Big thank you ! I can’t believe those beautiful sounding chords are ringing beneath my fingers. It’s surreal ! I ve learned many zeppelin songs and always though this was going to be monumental.
Carl, I've wanted to learn how to play this song for a very long time. Your video lesson has now made that possible for me. I just finished learning all the parts and now have to string them together trying to limit mistakes. I never thought I'd learn this beautiful piece. Thanks for everything.
This guy knows his music. I've seen others do songs then him & his is always the one that sounds right. I mean some other guys are good too. He is a happy medium for beginners & inter mediates.
Thanks so much for the great tutorial. Sadly, I'm nowhere near the skill level required to learn one of my all-time favorites, but I really enjoyed watching you break it down so brilliantly. Trying to understand how Page's mind decided to go to that tuning to create this masterpiece just broke part of my brain.
I had learned it by hearing and trying to play it in standard tuning though I knew Page did not play it in standard tuning but this way you're teaching here sounds much more like the real thing. It's much more beautiful. I'm sure that's the correct way. Thank you Carl!
Already knew how to play this song, but your lesson still helped me to learn more of the nuances that made Jimmy Pages style so unique. Another awesome Lesson as always!
Absolutely brilliant tutorial, bought the album when it came out when I was 10 years old, won't give up until I've mastered it. Saw their last concert at Knebworth park in 1979 when I was 16, amazing! Thankyou, from England👏👍👌
There were not drunk....they were the millennial generation that thinks Beiber and Bruno are better "musicians". Music is nearly dead now and it breaks my heart to see the thug influence on music.
I was rather inebriated when I started working with this song. I hammered away at it and finally got it after months of trying. The tuning led me to create works of my own that I love playing. Play for yourself. If you love it then share it with others. Yes art is meant to be shared but....thumbs up or down....who cares. I've played guitar drums and bass in bands for years. My greatest joy has always been when it makes ME smile. Play for YOUR love of it.
I have loved this song so much for years since I first got into Zeppelin. Never got close to being able to figure out how it was played. Thank you so much for the lesson. (And for all the other ones too!) This song is an absolute joy to play and sounds so beautiful.

Even though I´ve listened to Led Zep for over 40 years, only recently I got interested on this particular song. The first tutorial I came across was this one here and the tuning really threw me off. After getting over this part, I found out that i could give it a shot. I am ultra slow, will take forever to learn, but it has been great to go through those steps. Thanks a lot!! Awesome
Thanks for everything you do Carl, it's gotta be tough on you and the rest of the folks posting with these crazy copyright issues... It shouldn't be so hard just to play a song you like. It's not like you are taking any money out of their pockets, I swear they just do these things out of spite some times... it sucks. Thanks again! (Great song by the way, like I gotta tell you...)
I've been learning this song off tablature. You clarified some areas for me. You're a very good teacher! I appreciate the way you break down the song and the split screen. Thanks again! Bob
Day two of trying to get this right. Interesting factoid: This song came about when George Harrison said to John Bonham "The problem with you guys is you never do any ballads" so Page said "I'll give him a ballad". Those first two chords are supposed to be "Something" by George and The Beatles. Edit: Took longer than expected but I finally got the entire song. Almost 3 days. Yikes I'm rusty. Great lesson thank you!
Whenever I do a UA-cam search for a song I want to learn how to play, always happy to see your face show up. You're one of the few who actually gets it right. Great work! Thank you!

You are truly a gifted guitarist, Carl. The fact you share your talent in an effective way is very commendable. Thanks for all the lessons.
My goodness thank you! Such a beautiful song by my lifelong-favorite band. I'm such a Jimmy Page disciple and I SO appreciate that I can now play Rain Song thanks to you!
I'm 71 years old and have been trying to play guitar for over 40 years, just simple standard tuning open chords, I'm determined to learn this and I have ALL of it down except the riff rundown at the 7:13 to 7:23 and it's driving me crazy. I'll just keep at it, thanks for a great lesson. At 71 my fingers just won't pay attention to my brain.
One of the best guitar instructors I have ever seen on the net. Thanks so much for this!! I've seen someone try to play this with standard tuning and don't even try, it doesn't even compare to this!
This song opened so many doors for me
Dicking around with unique tunings is so much fun
ppmd will nnever come back man
One of my favorite Zep songs. I always avoided learning it because of the strange tuning, but will try it today. Thanks for the great lesson!
hi Carl:
I want to tell you that two years ago I bought my first guitar to be able to play this song that I love ... Today, after practicing it, I can say that I get it at% 85 and when I record a video and see how I play it, I'm surprised about my progress... I want to say THANK YOU !!!! and long live to zeppelin
hola Carl:
Quiero decirte GRACIAS!!!! y aguante led zeppelin
learning those masterpieces from jimmy makes me feel very lucky for been a human
i played this song when my grandpa passed and i can’t thank you enough for this gift
A masterpiece composed by one of the best guitarist on this planet, thanks a lot !!! Great work !
I’m a40 yr player and played in standard tuning…lol…I know I know…love this…thank you. One of my favs 🎶❤️👍🏻
This is such a well done lesson, it's so concise and easy to learn from
It always amazes me how guitarists come up with such iconic moving melodies!!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I totally understand YTBC. LMFAO
Wow! I started playing the guitar over 30 years ago and never attempted to play this song until seeing this lesson. Excellent tutorial and thank you for sharing this with us.
1 of the most beautifully arranged song ever written.Guitar genius by Jimmy.
I've been working on this song off and on for awhile. This lesson really helped me play the areas I've had issues with. Thanks so much.
Thank you!
Really good lesson! The notes all seems correct and the speed of explanation is not too fast or slow! Such a beautiful composition! Page is the man!!!
Prof ,Jimi never sold his soul ,it's right here with us all
Thanks for this. I’ve tried to play in std. and G tunings and didn’t sound right. I like your delivery, no wasted words or time. And once you’ve shown the passage you show your chops by playing what you’ve just finished demoing with wonderful fluidity. Really nice job that will push me along.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for everything.
just a fantastic lesson for a legendary song. I keep an acoustic around the house tuned just for this song
Thank you for this instructional I am a beginner and this song has been an inspiration in the way you have taught me this... Bravo
This guy knows his music. I've seen others do songs then him & his is always the one that sounds right. I mean some other guys are good too. He is a happy medium for beginners & inter mediates.
Finally got the whole song down!!!!thank you for this man, been at this the last month and this made it so much easier. Thanks man!
I've been been knowingly playing this wrong for 30 years. Just got it right in one hour. Thank You!!!!
Ditto. I got the tuning and the first 5 seconds down. Then I cried. 😄
perfect, that outro is totally wonderful, as is the rest of the song.
got my first guitar christmas 2023, got since ive been lovin you and the rain song complete thanks to this channel
Jimmy Page is such a legend to come up with something this amazing on such a usual tuning. ❤
Thankyou, from England👏👍👌
so grateful for your help, Carl. This has been on my list for years and I am finally getting to it. You did a GREAT job with it. Wow. Thanks again.
103 drunk people accidentally hit the dislike button. Hope they had a designated driver. obviously impaired.
There were not drunk....they were the millennial generation that thinks Beiber and Bruno are better "musicians". Music is nearly dead now and it breaks my heart to see the thug influence on music.
They're a bunch of transgender vegetarians.
they're probably people who didn't want to retune their guitar...
@@rodneystephenson7693 shut up idiot
Finally got this down after coming back to it like 5 times lmaoo. Thanks for all the great easy to follow lessons Carl.💙
I have loved this song so much for years since I first got into Zeppelin. Never got close to being able to figure out how it was played. Thank you so much for the lesson. (And for all the other ones too!) This song is an absolute joy to play and sounds so beautiful.
Seeing this, jimmy is a Genius especially to figure out that tuning to create such a calming beautiful song!
Outstanding Lesson you gave here. Thank you. A Masterpiece diagnosed and made palpable! I love it.
My mind is totally BLOWN! How the heck did JP come up with this tuning???!!! Incredible sounds from these open chords!
Who of us hasn’t wanted to play this beautiful melody? Just beautiful...
Great Job explaining the entire song . I'm almost done with it in one day. Just LOVE IT !!! Thank you Sir...
Thanks Carl. All my life I’ve tried to play this song in standard tuning based on the published music. I was never satisfied. You really nail it. I hope I can too now.
What an amazing demo and lesson. They sure don't write'em like that anymore. Thanks
Very good lesson. Great teacher. Thank you
Remeber coming across this lesson years ago...practiced for 5 years nd decided okay now i am ready to do tbis song hahah. Great video. Too bad copyright took the intro
Thanks for this man! I stumbled upon this lesson and learned it in one day! I have had experience playing, but I probably wouldn't have learned it that fast without this awesome lesson! Thanks!
Yes this song is beutiful and it blows my mind to think how Jimmy was able to bring it to life
Crying every time I play this piece... God exists.. :o-))
Awesome
any beautiful guitar music has a certain physical beauty to it too. just the way it moves across the fretboard.
Bob
Astonishing beautiful piece of Music. It is a mesmerizing, hypnotizing melody. I can list it over and over again. Thanking for sharing.
Wonderful
Never apologize
It is what it is
One of the all time greats. Both song, & guitarist.
My favourite Led Zeppelin song
Day two of trying to get this right. Interesting factoid: This song came about when George Harrison said to John Bonham "The problem with you guys is you never do any ballads" so Page said "I'll give him a ballad". Those first two chords are supposed to be "Something" by George and The Beatles. Edit: Took longer than expected but I finally got the entire song. Almost 3 days. Yikes I'm rusty. Great lesson thank you!
Whenever I do a UA-cam search for a song I want to learn how to play, always happy to see your face show up. You're one of the few who actually gets it right. Great work! Thank you!
