There comes a time in a man's life when he has to burn all his bridges, change his name, and head out to the middle of nowhere to start a new life. Do it enough times without choosing to eat your own blaster instead, and you end up in the Deep Periphery... at which point you're either eating your own blaster or someone else's by the end of the week.
There are no "blasters" in BT.

I wish I had the money to commission Goat to make an entire album of Periphery folk songs, "Taurian Soldier" and "Yellow Rose of Canopus" are classics.
I started playing a Mechwarrior campaign a few weeks ago, knowing nothing about Battletech. I created an illiterate former space miner with looks and voice modeled after Lemmy Kilmister who took up mercenary work after getting pink slipped by his mining company for causing an explosion that killed the rest of his crew, and awakening something primal within him about making things go boom.
In a whim, I decided he was from the Periphery when asked
I see now I picked right.

If you absolutely can't live in one of the nicer core worlds of the Concordat or Magistracy, I have it on good authority that Randis IV and its knights are pretty chill. Those guys will literally accept sandwiches as payment for blowing up pirates.
As a citizen of the Periphery myself, I can only tell you this. To me, and mine... Liberty means more than comfort.
Not to mention, we're a damn sight more dangerous than any Jack booted Inner Sphere thugs.

Really cool that you guys are posting Goat’s TTBT songs as stand-alone videoes. I find myself singing this one and Kerensky Blues from time to time.
I can just imagine some lower tier Inner Sphere noblewoman, running to Canopus to get away from the Clan invasion, clutching her pearls and utterly horrified every which way she looks.
Then about a month later, she's got herself some cat-ears and a tail, everything she wears is latex and she's running her own combination Merc outfit and porn studio out of an amusement park
The Periphery, where every day is casual Friday
Could have some interesting stories set from the periphery's point of view. Say a feudal world that hasn't seen tech more advanced than wind mill in a 100 years, and suddenly they are invaded by giant metal birds carrying metal giants. Be god dam terrifying to be one of the peasants when that goes down.
You could basically parallel the typical fantasy story of finding some old legacy weapon to save the kingdom by having some mech's (supplies and simulators) stashed away and maintained by some isolationist family that 'once helped the royal line long ago' so you can get that classic 'hero returns to save the day' feel.
Some where on the planet under a wind blow hill of dust and sedament.
Bolo online, sleep mode exited, inbound threat detected, IFF response negative.
Objective protect planetary human population.
Ammunition depleted but within acceptable parameters, road wheels 33% wear, powerplant operating at 75% capacity, sending maintenance and resupply request.
Forward for the Dinochrome Brigade, for the Concordate, for humanity. This will defend.

Just got a short tight beam radio transmission from the surface lasted only about a second the computers don't recognize it and it didn't last long enough to fix its position. Second transmission wide broadcast, longer than first, it's coming from a river basin south of the largest settlement. No other radio traffic on target world.

I like how 40k claims that they invented the "grim-dark" kind of space setting...

40k doesn't claim to have invited the Grimdark setting. That goes back to the early 20th century, it did however provide the name for the style/genre. As "Grimdark" actually comes from the "Grim Darkness of the Far Future" part of the Intro that is on nearly every 40k product. Also Battletech is not consistently Grimdark, certain time periods in the lore and books are, but as a whole it falls short. Which is good really, too many things try to emulate 40k's insanity without realizing that the insanity is kinds the Joke with 40k.
40k forgets what it is sometimes.
Battletech was pretty close to the 40K grade of space feudalism with tech just going down hill. Thankfully they changed the tone to be less that and more of a Used Future setting like Alien or Firefly.

As a former citizen of the inner sphere I take great offence to being reminded that I'm stuck out here in a madcat I can barely afford to keep running. Keeping me in this eternal merc life instead of avenging my PROUD and ancient noble- oh... everyone else is also doing that here too... or just insane and or don't want to help because they have their own scores to settle...guess I'll drop once more.
