The shift in the singers attitude from an normal guy turned Merc to make some cash to a psychopathic Mech Fighting Badass was really clever.
I think you could see the song as sung from the perspective of many Mechwarriors. Each experiences war in their own way.
In this case it probably even specifically means the SLDF divisions which decided to turn into Merc Companies
This is based on Blood on the Risers which is sung to Battle Hymn of the Republic's tune.

Tanks, helicopters and hover crafts laying in unrecognizable heaps strew about the landscape. Towering mechs stand silently like stone statues missing limbs while others lay stretched across the ground in most cases still on fire and glowing from the fatal wounds. I look to my left, then to the right, check my comm's.... no one. No one is left.... I clench my fist, and scream with rage! "Damn you Steiner Scout Squad!!!!!"

The thing i will always hold dear of battletech it's is utterly human outlook.
In all other mecha shows, games, settings and so on pilots are 14 years old fighting for friendship, idealistic teens fighting for good, honorable knights or predestinated chosen ones.
In battletech, yeah, you still get those things, but mostly it's booze and whores.
It's humanity at its finest, and it's bloody marvelous.

I don't know about you, but I like Titanfall. Nice, good old space rebels and terrorists against a space faring corporation with little care for civilians. It's even got warcrime-committing mercenaries!

ExoSquad was literally just about a bunch of soldiers (and a genetically engineered giant blue man). It's also the best western mech show of that era, and kind of what I wish the Battletech show had been.

I think my favorite thing about battletech is a lot of the art for it.
Not even the robots or space ships, but the fact that a lot of the people in it are just ugly. Its not just fashion models and bodybuilders in space, its just regular ugly dregs everywhere.
That might me more on the artist than the setting. Some characters are described as supermodel handsome/beautiful, but then you look at illustrations and wonder what the hell the narrator was smoking.

I've been curious as to how to get into Battletech. I can't really play IRL due to no money but do you know of any online ways?
@@swumprat "Battletech a game of armored combat" was released in 2019. Beginners box, full game, expansion rule books and all new plastic minis to boot. A full relaunch of the tabletop.
Its not been the most successful launch but the game is out there right now.
Personally i've been buying old minis online and using PDF's of the FASA days to play with a few friends- but either option works.

Reminds me of Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries where you'd take contracts for fun and salvage, and the actual C-bill award could often be ignored.
So many of those contracts were basically paying you salvage instead of actual money, especially the early missions LOL

As the grandson of a paratrooper and the son of a tank driver, I find this song only mildly addictive. Ever since i read the lyrics to blood upon the risers in a G.U.R.P.S. rulebook (special ops i think) this song has been etched into memory, been playing battletech since early 90's THANK YOU for mixing both of these together.
The number of times I've listened to this is a bit sad really. Thank you it is fantastic and I hope to hear more singles in the future.

Now I'm imagining my merc's in HBS' Battletech singing this song as we fly towards the next contract, with me leading the song as Darius shakes his head and Yang singing the Capellan verses even louder.
This is a very nice song. Just picked up the 2018 battletech game because I found it on sale and my PC could run it, been absolutely addicted to it for the past three days, playing career mode because I've already seen the story a while ago and quite frankly, I don't like how restrictive the campaign modes early missions were. Anyway, started campaign, got incredibly lucky with the shops and managed to get the salvage needed to get missile geared assault mechs in the first three sectors I've gone to (Although I will admit I was skirting bankruptcy every time I picked up a piece or any LRM-20's I found) and I managed to salvage a whole Cataphract from a mission due to sniping the Cockpit with an L-Coil, so now my go to drop loadout is Phoenix Hawk with a single L-coil and nothing else (Breaching shot + weight and venting issues) A Cataphract with Dual PPC's and enough heat vents to maintain constant fire even in badlands, an assault mech with 4 LRM-20++'s and all the ammo known to man, with all four LRM-20++'s having increased stability damage and finally a firestarter with nothing but flamers. Heat damage for medium enemies that aren't worth ammo, L-coil for Light targets because if it hits, it's destroying something PPC's for sniping cockpits of things I want and LRM bombardments precision targeted at the legs for everything else to try and either takeout the legs or just kill the pilot via the concussive force repeatedly falling over.

I've played every Mechwarrior including the OG Battletech on my Commodore 128D I bought in the Nuremberg PX while I was stationed in Erlangen West Germany back in the late 80s. I'm absolutely loving Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries and I just came across this. I think it's awesome! As an American Army veteran (19K) M1A1 gunner during Desert Storm I love how you took this song into the Battletech universe. Cheers.
