I just turned 65, retired 10 years ago, had a major heart attack over a year before that ( due to a blood clot from shoulder surgery 7 weeks prior. NOT due to obesity. I'm 5'10" and weighed around 190 with a 33" waistline) and am now about 230 lbs.
I have 2 bicycles, 1 road and 1mountain bike. I bought them when my meds kept my resting pulse below 30bpm and I had high blood pressure. Riding either bike almost killed me. My heart felt as though it would burst through my chest and I couldn't breathe. I have NEVER smoked, btw. ANYTHING!
But as of last year, my meds were reduced and 1 was eliminated entirely. My resting pulse is around 64bpm and blood pressure is now normal.
I think it's time to get the bikes out!
      Thanks for the inspiration!

My husband and I just bought some good used bikes on May 23 and started riding. We started out 2 miles and now I’m up to 5.5 miles. I’m 62 and have very bad feet and am on disability. This is much easier than walking. I’m hoping to tone up and lose some weight. No hurry, just slow and steady.

Jesus Christ died on the cross for Your sins. He is the ONLY way to get to
Heaven. Being a good person cannot get you into Heaven because being “good” doesn’t erase your record of sin with God, only the blood of Jesus can do that. I'd like to think that the cycling community is better than our broader culture in terms of shying away from "lose fat fast" fad diets, yet I see so many bike influencers pushing weird, restrictive diets. It's not rocket science. More calories burned than calories in = weight loss. Eat healthy and enjoy everything in moderation. Ride your damn bike whenever you can. Enjoy life.

Pls don't buy the BS of 20 th century western medicine. Even medicine is slowly accepting that it has been bs. Fasting solves almost the health problems or at least is used in the process. Your body can't regulate insulin tolerance back to its healthy state unless it can catch its natural cycle in which glucose is dumb like 10 hours after your last meal. Starting with ending your eating window with fat heavy and low carb fiod will give you the edge to be able to push your breakfast a little further everyday. Just try to make sure you give your body just enough to push your breakfast further, don't buy into we need to eat 3 times a day so you need to eat these specidifc things because your body can't regulate sugar content in your blood and in your tissues. You can catch it back up. People have cured their cancer, cured their hypertension and many other problems with fasting. It's not part of "medicine" because you can't prescribe fasting.

@@sjkooiii Read TurboCharged by Dian Griesel and Tom Griesel (brother and sister). Believe me, the fat will pour off of you faster with less effort and get you to a point in cycling that you never dreamed of. Note: cycling is a very efficient way to move our bodies from point to point. Walking, on the other hand, is less efficient ... thus more calories burned. If you keep your heart-rate less than 117 with plenty of water, then you will stay in fat burning mode. I trained for Cycle Oregon 2015 for 4 months with rides from 40 miles to 80 miles and then did the week long ride burning 4200 calories to 5600 calories per day ... I went from 260 to 245 lbs ... that’s it! I was eating healthy, but grains were included and that’s what stopped my weight loss ... as well as the long training miles. We are fit fat athletes and that sucks! Stressing our bodies will put us into dehydration causing our brain to conserve the fat for life survival. You have to switch that around and start burning fat first! Read Turbocharged!

I used to weigh 150ish back in high school but it was because I was not taking care of my diabetes. I have been dating my girlfriend for just about four years now and she has been highly supportive and motivating since day one which I am thankful for. I’ve always loved bike riding and yesterday I went for my first ride in a while on my bike that I built from the frame up and it was great. I rode for 10 miles to get started and it was exhilarating! I just wanted to say thank you for this video. It’s nice to hear an honest straight to the point perspective on their journey. My goal is to get back down to 155 but this time in a healthy way being that now I have started to get a better control of my diabetes. We are gonna ride together when we can but Its videos like this that help to motivate me to reach my goals. Sorry for all the me me me stuff but I just wanted to say thanks. Great advice here. Nutrition can be a confusing rabbit hole and I've been down it a few times before! I do pretty much the same thing you do. I don't eat before 5-6oc unless it a hard training ride then I'll eat per and post ride. Drinking plenty of water keeps you feeling full and helps a lot. I don't buy into all the extrq advantages that get pushed about intermittent fasting like increased broth hormones as they are just bs but it is a great way to help restrict calories. Hey dude, some great advice. I've been cycling since 2012, 32 yr old now. Fluctuated alot fitness wise since 2012 with cycling, life gets in the way ... Since 1st Jan this year I've lost 2 stone (28 pounds), currently 13 stone, by following intermittent fasting and TRE (time restricted eating) principles. Fast days are 800 calories, eat no earlier than 10AM, eat no later than 6PM. Cut down on alcohol, almost completely. Also reduced number of capuchinos I drink, 0 in the week, just 2 over the weekend, I may occasionally have an espresso shot before a training ride, I have a bean to cup coffee machine at home, it makes great coffee, but the convenience has been adding to my waist line. Depending on my bike training intensities I do eat more than 800 calories on training days, with an increase in protein also, otherwise my body would not be able to recover and build fitness.
After 6PM I won't even drink tea with milk ... fruit or herbal teas, 0 calories.
My goal right now is to lose a further stone, will assess from there if more is achievable.

James I had to go and I left you without my comment. I will keep it short, I am 56 years old, I was 275 more than 3 weeks ago and now I am 255 without getting on any of my bikes nor am I starving or killing myself with hour long workouts. I love cycling and the hills were killing me the last few years with my weight gain. I went back to the way of life that kept me at 185 - 190 and the “FAT” is now just pouring off! “Fat” ... not muscle or water weight! I am planning to be 190 lbs by August 2021, but I think I will be there by June. By the time I get back on my bike, the distances will be so much easier and the hill climbs that I love, will be do-able again. Read TurboCharged by Dian Griesel and her brother Tom, easy read and fascinating!

    Great content.
I would add that a sort of mild "refeeding syndrome" can occur with fasting and/or cycling, wherein a person ends up consuming way more food than they should in response to their body's increased hunger cues from these activities.
As far as the nutrition advice goes, processed *high fat + high carb + low fiber* food is usually the biggest culprit for the average person. If you don't track these foods (snickers, donuts, etc.), it's very easy to end up in a caloric surplus.

I'm 34. 6ft 2in. 270 lbs. I don't have money for a nice bike but I do have a mountain bike. I ride occasionally, mapped out a route in the neighborhood that gets me about 6 miles which I can do fairly easily if I'm not pushing myself, or as you said, staying comfortable. Any other tips or advice that can help me? I'd like to start riding every morning or as often as I can. I desperately want to get rid of all the weight. I'm done with it. Thanks.

      Dave,
CV got it right. The key to losing weight is exercise AND eating better. i.e. count calories, set a daily target that leaves you in a deficit, and replace the obviously not so good stuff with satisfying low-cal alternatives (Google is your friend - there are lots of great recipes online).
I read food labels, use a cheap little digital scale and do the math on most meals.
Personally, I think intermittent fasting helps quite a bit with weight management. Or maybe I just feel like it's helping, which helps to keep me motivated. Either way, I recommend giving it a go to see if it works for you.
Like CV said, an early morning bike ride provides a great framework that makes it easier to stretch an overnight fast through to late morning or lunchtime.
My top tip is to take a flask of coffee along on your ride. As well as offering some caffeine energy, it helps you to forget you are hungry.
I went from 210 to 165 lbs in about 5 months, and it didn't feel too bad. After a while your appetite adjusts and you develop healthier eating habits.
That's my US$0.02 worth. Hope it helps.

You have to up the protein count in order to build muscle. If you eat fruits, vegetables and carbs, you will lose muscle and that's a bad thing if you want to be better at cycling faster and longer.

Coming up on 11 months into my weight loss journey this year. 40kgs lost (90 lbs ish). I found the most *effective* way to strip weight has been intermittant fasting with Low Carb High Fat. No potatos, rice, refined sugars, flour, bread etc. Once you become fat adapted, your body knows hows to burn it more efficiently. Instead of looking to your blood for carbs it goes straight to your fat stores for ketones. Full keto is a bit too extreme for me, but LCHF seems to be a good balance. I've tried CICO, Fruitarian, 40/40/20 etc etc. LCHF definately had the best results (with IF)

I'm eating a fuck ton of carbs and I'm getting leaner. You're either still insulin resistant, you eat too much in general, or you don't workout hard enough. Also -- you probably don't have a lot of muscle mass to have a decent metabolism rate. So work on your strength too by calisthenics or weights -- don't just do cardio or you'll rubber band back to your old fat level (very likely to happen).

went from 288 to 215 from Christmas 2016 until Christmas 2018...target is 175 by Christmas 2019...really what I have done is try and keep 125-150 miles a week and try to ride at least 6 days a week even if it is just a 30min ride...on the diet side I have not adjusted too much other than watching meal size and almost always only have a salad with protein for lunch...its getting harder now so I am starting to count calories and although injured now plan to do 150-200 miles a week

I use my Mtn Bike high gears, 48: 15,13 for the sprints. My leg strength has increased tremendously.
I've lost 23 pounds in 3 months. Of course, I also radically changed food intake quantity and quality.
With just 20 minutes of biking HIIT, I can burn 300 calories depending upon average heart rate.

Not that good as it contains refined sugar, but my friend who's at 14% body fat eats it and doesn't seem to get fatter, so maybe it ain't that bad -- BUT, you're risking of developing visceral fat in your organs, so I dunno, you pick.

This fast read is fascinating and is all scientific facts presented to you. Nothing to buy but the book. You are working to hard for shallow gifts! Keep your muscle and your strength while removing fat from your muscles and your middle sections of your body. This guy does not have the scientific background to be putting your faith in. Low calorie dense foods...no need to be hungry when in a deficit. Also, eat breakfast cmon it doesn’t matter how much energy you need it’s about fighting ghrelin and not getting punched in the face at night before bed. Eating before cardio will give you more energy to burn more calories. Just a couple things to think about. Thanks

Two a days & adding good fats to my diet is how I lost weight. Getting up early to do a morning ride, combined with adding almonds, avocado, pistachios & COCONUT OIL to nearly all my foods helped tremendously. I simply used a Nutri Ninja, with smoothies from daily harvest. After a few weeks I branched out expanding those prepared smoothies with more kale, lettuce, raw sweet potatoes, raw potatoes, nuts & assorted fruits. During this time I also experimented with plant based protein powders & beet powder. Beet powder is supposed to be a natural EPO booster. Riding the bike after work for a few hours is how most days went, I lost 5lbs & it felt great.

I ride about 80 to 90 miles a week, usually two separate rides. I am at a plateau for the last 2 months or so as far as losing weight. I am about 225. But I'm pretty sure it's because of the calorie intake. Intermittent fasting will have to be the way for me I believe.

True. Be it cycling, running, exercising, or any other sports, you should always accompany that with a balanced diet and good eating habit (ie: Intermittent fasting) if you're aiming for weight loss.
I lost 20 pounds before i got married with IF + calorie deficit + switching to brown rice but i used to Running. I gained my weight back now, lol and I'm doing it again but with cycling this time.

I commute by bike to work (11km minimum each leg) and most of the morning rides are with me fasting but now I'm starting to eat something small before the ride and then, after some breakfast.
I just did the brought the calories in and out the balance to a level I could still what I like (some fast food included) and lose weight. Now I did start paying more attention to my eating because I want to get more fit and start doing races
