This is a point which needs much much more public awareness. If you have put on weight and maybe not had an ideal lifestyle in the past, take up cycling. It works wonders for physical and mental health.

I echo your statement Mr. Richards, started using the bicycle daily instead of the car on Oct 17th of 2016 (a bit more than a year ago) at 45+ years of age & have never looked back.
It transformed me both physically & mentally.

Absolutely, I actually feel like an addict now, if I don't cycle for couple of days my body tells me it needs it. The concentration focus it brings to the brain, the energy to the whole body, and strange but a fact for me, less hunger... what's with that. The Government needs to encourage cycling for a healthier nation.

I got into cycling when a work colleague saw how down I was with my weight and never getting out the house apart from for work. He literally had to teach me how to ride a bike at the age of 33! I've been cycling now for 5 months and I love it. We set mini goals each month and there's now a group of us from work who all get together on days off and just see where the roads take us. Best thing I ever did.

Hey Katie - well done. You are a star. And an inspiration. Thank you for posting.
I have been riding on and off since my teens - when I don't ride I put on weight, when I ride I am fitter and lose some weight. Lifestyle has a lot to do with it. I have a road bike which i bought way back in 2004, still good. Bought a hybrid about five years ago, used that a lot. But last year was a bummer of a year. Didn't do enough. So, I am now back on the program. 150 km per week minimum target. 45 days in and I hit my 1000km tomorrow. Not breaking any records - usually between 26 and 28kph. ... I know Doi Inthanon (I live I Chiang Mai) ....
    Keep riding... keep inspiring others
Oh and btw i am 73 years old.
Did my first time trial in 1959. Oh bloody hell ! i am ancient... please don't fall over laughing.

This video showed up on my UA-cam feed for whatever reason. Just wanted to say congratulations. Cycling is fun and it definitely helps with weight loss. I have gone from 190 kg (420 pounds) to 105 kg (230 pounds) in the last 10 years, and the bike has been a huge part of that. It's certainly been the most fun part. So I know exactly how much better you feel now. Again, best regards!

I'm from Sheffield, I'm over 50. I'm overweight and it's because of these videos I keep pushing myself. I became Vegan in Jan 2019 and did my first 100km fondo in Jan 2019 on the 2nd Aniversary of my mum's passing; after only 4 months of riding a bike after years of not riding. I did 65 miles for my Feb fondo on a single speed MTB on the road; going from Rotherham to The Peak District and back. I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! Katie, living outside of NYC, and as I become acquainted with you, you inspire me every time I watch your channel. I’m happy that you are pleased with your overall tremendous weight loss journey and how fit and healthy you look and feel. You also have a great sense of humor which I am sure helped you with your riding experience. Great way to make friends and get out socially. I am a beginner and I plan to train on Zwift and become more fit and lower my overall weight then hit the roads! At 63, I am feeling young and trying to eat right and further improve my fitness level. I was an athlete back in the day, I ran 10ks and played a lot of golf and tennis. So I look forward to your videos after you recover so you can let me know how you are doing. Ride on! John

Started this year at 80 kilos (5 foot 9, 34 y/o male) which isn't fat but not thin either. Got me a single speed bike, did only 50 miles in January, 70 in February and already got almost 100 miles in March. Planning to do my first 100 km (60 miles) ride before the month's over. Also doing weight training and tweaked my nutrition a bit and I'm already down to 75 kilos in 10 weeks, couldn't be happier about it. Congratulations on your journey and success.

This is super interesting from a weight loss perspective. We know that the way to lose weight is through a calorie deficit and most people find that achievable through a slight reduction in calories and increased movement. But it’s interesting to see that cycling such long distances creates enough of calorie deficit for you to not have to worry about tracking calories at all. Wether that’s because it’s difficult to get that amount of calories in or you just don’t eat that much. I know lots of people really struggle with eating back their exercise calories especially if they’ve struggled with binge eating.
There are some studies that show the bodies appetite regulation underestimates when you do really high levels of exercise . This is clearly an example of that. Sounds like the love of the sport is key to wanting to give that much time to it for weight loss. Well done 💪🏻 you’ve come a long way!

I think this should be seen by people other than just bike riders. Your advice is spot on. When you focus on losing weight you fail. When you focus on living a healthy life with a balance of food, exercise, social activity etc then everything else, including weight, falls into place nicely. I am a bit jealous. I am a lot older and although I train hard and have been doing so for a lot longer than you have, I can't achieve some of the things that you have done. Well done.

  • @thankyoujesus2836
    @thankyoujesus2836 6 років тому +13

True. I find the hardest part was getting over the fact that I actually did gain a bunch of weight and feeling comfortable/at peace with that... and understanding that this doesn’t mean that I am unworthy of love or friends or anything I wanted. I found it to be very challenging not to let it hold me back and to stop fighting it
And to let it go I learned not to place my selfworth on how much I weighed/how I looked which is really good for my character and ego... I also helped me be more compassionate towards overweight people and see how emotionally strong they actually are. To love myself anyway wasn’t easy but it gets easier everyday and it actually is easier the more I love myself regardless of weight. Lesson learned! I’m so grateful for it :)

Just found your channel via a link from Juliet .Congrats to you for transforming your life and finding a new way to get healthy and be happy. Keep up the good work....I am a 68 year old guy on Cape Cod who started riding seriously( was always a casual rider) about 4 years ago. I ride 150 miles per week all year long and I am in the best shape of my life and found many new friends on the trails. Btw.... I ride Catrikes as I find them to be much more comfortable , especially on the long rides. Your videos are great.

Hi i just started cycling last year and i got into a bike accident which left me a soft tissue injury on my left knee. After the accident, I stopped cycling for a good while. Some of my colleagues also had some serious bike accident which gave them fracture injuries. This worsened my fear of cycling again. I still want to get back into cycling but i guess my fear hasn’t diminished yet. I’m pushing myself from time to time to go on cycling with my husband. Thank you for this video. It’s actually empowering and inspiring at the same since i only see a few women cyclists out there who would fearlessly venture out the road.

My husband and I bought bikes last month. We are so far doing 30km each week. Not many safe biking places here in Kenya, but we are using what works. I'm now 87kg, and my goal weight is 70kilos. You have inspired me to keep going. I love biking, I love the places we are discovering. Soon joining a local cycling group who take beginners as well. Thank you for sharing your story. Love from Kenya

I used to cycle but because of my weight it was by mountain bike, I'm a shameful 23 stone due to depression and lifestyle I had my mountain bike stolen from inside a shop and its now been two years since I last rode, and only just yesterday I purchased a second hand mountain bike and in the process of doing it up to ride for charity. I'm aiming to push myself to cycling 54.1 miles to collect from the various locations at my company as my work colleague is working to pay off his funeral as he does not want his wife to pay ( the guy has cancer btw ) but watching this video has pushed me even more to get out and about on two wheels. Keep up the great work you've inspired me. Who knows... lol I may even do a youtube weight loss journey.

I'm hoping to get fitter and get better sleep from all the excercise I get cycling, so I can keep up with my young kids. Thanks for your channel. It's great to see a female cycling channel! Love it!

This is exactly my plan and it's great to see someone else has already proved that it'll work.

Katie Kookaburra similar stuff to you from what I have seen but this year, I felt brave enough to join a cycling club. Royal Leamington Spa Cycling Club has got me into group rides and veterans TT’s (one is automatically veteran over 40 years which for some, may seem an age 🤣). Anyway, anyone can do TT’s, 10 miles of max effort, against clock - you don’t need a TT bike just surf up with your road bike and have a go. You’re against your time , no one else’s! It’s quite addictive and focuses training on speed. I have found my weight fell away doing shorter high effort interval type training and my general Sportive length ride speed and stamina increased. I also did Rawlinson Brackett Sportive, Tour of Cambridge, Velothon Wales, Tour O’the Borders (favourite) and Velo Birmingham. Have also been to dark side with RLSCC recently ‘cos I have a mountain bike and it’s great to get mucky this time of year 😳

You may loose fat, but gain muscle mass - that would "make result" even. For sure your blood would be more oxygenated, and you will always be healthier and in better metabolic condition, regardless of the weight by riding bicycle.

High Carb, Low fat like she did, basically DurianRider protocols. Sugar is your friend. Try it for yourself. Low Fat like less than 10grams per day. The Fat you eat is the fat you wear. Carbs will fuel the athletic lifestyle. No calorie counting, just go get it.

Hi Katie! Thank you for sharing your testimony with us! I am hoping to get back into shape again, because I really LOVE and enjoy bike riding- that's always been my passion! Unfortunately, last year, I had to move away from my hometown where I rode everywhere on an daily basis. Since then, I have gained so much weight due to 1.) Me, currently residing an a toxic, negative environment (pretty much, it's a very bad neighborhood) where crime and road accidents happen, randomly. 2.) The other town where I am currently residing at, it has no even terrain / flat land where I can safely ride my bicycle, without fear of crashing downhill / struggling to go uphill, or being victimized by the local trouble makers 😒 However, after watching your video, Katie, you have become a positive inspiration to me and many other viewers + you have also encouraged me to overcome my challenges, especially with my weight gain, which I am very determined to beat! Again, thank you so much Katie! Stay awesome ☺😊✊👍✌ and safe cycling, always 🚲💜💜💜 🚲 PS: *positive update* Earlier this afternoon, I went out on a 5 - 10 mile bike ride with my cousins. The ride was challenging at some parts but it was also fun lol! My cousins are very supportive of my goal in helping me to lose weight, so I definitely agree with you- riding a bicycle in a social group is a great idea 😊✌💜

Bikes have just as much if not more rights to be on the road than cars. Not having a dig because I’ve just started cycling and using my car less. It makes me have more care and courtesy towards cyclists knowing how they’re feeling during that ride

This is very, very super, Katie! Big respect!
One can lose weight by "eating the half", low fat, low sugar. But in most of the cases the weight is coming back.
The human body is made to move, run, cycle and perform. Sweating is very important to burn fat and lose weight.
Climbing with a bicycle - as you do, Katie - is extremely effective.
Tips for beginners: Get a good bicycle. It can be a 2nd hand one. Famous brands like Giant, GT, Scott, Trek.. and so on have for example good bikes. Frame size, saddle, seating position, handlebar must fit you. Easy low gears are very important. For example 3 chainrings 44/32/22 teeth front and rear 11-34 teeth work fine. Also front 32 teeth, rear 11-50 teeth.
If you don't have low gears, it is unbelievable hard to climb, especially as a beginner. And if this experience is bad, it will be hard for you to go on.
Pedaling in low gears is also good for your legs/muscles/knees.
Set small and rechable goals. If 500 Meters of climb (in distance) is too tough for you, ride 100 m, stop, have a short break, another 100 m... and so on. After a while you will be able to do 1, 2, 5...10 Kilometers of climb.
No shame to go one part on foot.
Some people think that e-biking is a good training. Well, if you have health/knee problems, then is better than nothing. But human power and training can't be compared with any motor.
It might be hard, you might be slow, but this is honest and real training with your own power.
Training on a bicycle at home is good, but nothing compares to an outdoor ride.
Climbing on a bicycle means sweating. Sweating is normal. Sweating brings the bad stuff out of your system and turns on your burner.
Cycling in the rain is very good for your immune system. If there is too much snow, then walk.
If for example 4'000 calories come into your system and 2'000 go out, you won't lose weight.
So, check your nutrition and calories.
    Have good rides!
