15 years, and not much changed. Still making great, entertaining and rather educational videos on old viruses. This is why the community loves you, Dan, you make consistent content (in sense of, content type).
a true sliver of the good, old youtube that i really miss. no big budget production or bullshit clickbait, just a genuine one-man band making comfy quality content.
for me, a lot of the enjoyment in these videos is that it sort of acts as a portal into a world of computing that i never saw. it's so interesting seeing these old viruses and how the world of computers work around them. back at a time when viruses felt more alive, more interesting
I was around for all this...but considering I was only 13 years old when this worm came out...I hadn't really gotten into computers much yet,so never actually had any live exposure, so watching these is like opening a door to a world I was parallel to, but could never enter because conditions weren't right.
been watching for well over a decade! i pretty much grew up on these videos - and they’re still just as entertaining now! 😄 you inspired a very young, traumatized me to try… something. anything! i started tinkering with programming and computing at a young age after seeing the cool effects of making your own programs. i’m majoring in computer science now, so you’ve had a significant impact on me and my future. thank you for your hard work (and time) towards making these. can’t wait to see what comes in the future!
i'm glad you like the videos! I always am amazed to hear of people influenced in their career/life trajectory in part because of the videos I make, and it never fails to catch me off guard (in a good way!) I appreciate your super thanks!
Dan, my man, you're showing us what's left of the dawn of the internet and it's been a very long time since the dawn of the internet. You could put out one video in six months and I'd be excited to see it in the feed. None of us would be sad to see a "virus redemption" video later where you developed additional features of the virus into working again.
I have enjoyed your videos for the better part of decade when i was much younger, it has inspired my love for all things computing and i constantly await for new videos. Take this a my little token of graditude for all youve done for me :D
Dan, you can't expect every video to be ultra amazing and life changing... but people love your content for what you do, your style and your humour! I love that your videos are still basically like the old days of UA-cam too. I like how they feel, huddling around a computer in a darkened room looking at malware from years gone back! It would be cool if you could get more of the activation routines running, but just do videos and things when you can. We're not going anywhere :D P.S You mentioned IRC you could probably run unrealircd easy enough to try see that in action. Looking forward to whatever you do, regardless. Hope everything's good! :) x
Always great to see you again! It’s funny you mention the whole “letting perfect be the enemy of good” thing, as it’s something I have also been trying to remind myself of lately. Perfectionism has kept me from releasing so many things over the years that now just sit rotting on a drive, all the effort wasted. For what it’s worth, I did like the video, this is a pretty interesting worm. Deleting everything in an infinite loop instead of just once is a neat idea. I’m also very interested to see you delve into the world of old antivirus products as well, should be fun! Cya next time :]
I started watching these videos when I was 11 or 12. Now at 23 and as a grad student, I can speak to personal experience how time for hobbies gets gradually lost to life as the years go by. Thanks for still posting these videos all these years later, no matter how long they are or how long it takes for them to come out.
These videos are what sparked my interest in cybersecurity and now, 8 years later as an actual consultant, they bring back some very chill nostalgia and respark the curiosity of figuting out how something works. Much appreciated that you continue to post these Dan!
Hey Dan. I've got a special comment for you today. I've been watching these videos for somewhere between 8 and 10 years now. And next week is the last presentation in my Computer Science degree. Fucking finally. You were a major hand in my interest in cybersecurity, and while that is no longer my priority (software development actually...), analyzing these old school viruses and showcasing them has always been a light in my life and studies. I would've never been inspired to learn program analysis in the same way. So thank you for what you do Dan - from one Danno to another.
I've been watching you for almost 15 years now. You have unironically been the most consistent thing in my life. There was one time about a year ago I dropped a tab of acid and watched your videos for 8 hours without a single interruption. I can honestly say it was one of the most peaceful experiences in my life.
wow, thank you. I can honestly say I don't think I've ever heard of anyone dropping acid and watching my videos - glad it was a good trip and not a bad one!
These videos are great! You learn quite a bit about older systems and their flaws and how we can prevent them. I've been watching this channel for years, and these never fail to amaze me! What an inspiration. Thank you for all you done sir Dan! 🤘🏻
Dan, I've been watching you since I was 12, maybe 13 and still in elementary. Now I'm in my first year of college and you still haven't changed! It's nice having something constant in life.
The crazy thing about your videos are, that they still are in that old 2012 youtube style. Theres no clickbait or screaming at you in the title, its just all information about the video. I normally dont really watch such long form videos with just a dude talking, but yours can make that entertaining! Most of the stuff you show was even before my time, so seeing how viruses back then worked and you showing it is just so entertaining. So, thanks for all of those great videos, and im definitly going to continue watching then!
I'm not an old viewer as many of the fellow conpanions here, but I can say that I really enjoy you videos a lot, no matter if the videos are too long or not as impressive as some of your most famous videos. I discovered your channal like 3 years ago due that my computer was infected with a ransomware and was searching for information about ways of solving my problem. The way that you explain things teached me more than any tutorial that I used to solve my problem. So thank you for these videos.
You are one of the oldest channels I still come back for every video. I guess I’m “old fashioned” as far as UA-cam goes, but I prefer this type of content.
For an easy way to run old email, IRC, FTP, BBS, terminal and webservers, give the Synchronet BBS software a try! It bundles all of them together, in a very suitably basic way.
@@danooct1 No problem! Out of the box it runs its own BBS services on the web server and whatnot, but it does let you change the dirs to your liking, so you can coax it into running anything you like really.

Video quality is crystal clear! I love it. I discovered your channel when I was 9 and now I'm 18, and you're the only youtuber I consistently visited throughout my lifetime.

As some people have already said, thank you for the videos Dan. I’ve been here since like 2010 😅 and boy do I enjoy watching. You were one of the people that sparked my interest in computing and now I’m a Software Engineer! Thank you for everything and keep being you Dan, have a happy 2024 too!
from the first time i found you a few years ago i've never not been entertained or at least intrigued in what was going on, i love how you present them it really brings me back.
I only stumbled across your channel in the past couple years or so, wishing I'd found it sooner because I find these videos to be really insightful, reminiscent of a very different era and all feels so naturally made. Even if they don't always go to plan, that's part of the beauty of it all 😊
You are the only channel that I know has stayed consistent for 15 straight years. I'm really glad you have because every time I watch a video, it feels like my childhood again. Like a time machine going back to the past. Not to mention, you are doing a service by preserving lost media like this. Cheers, and thank you for everything.
