It is quite strange to me that they have the ability to code a worm that can check for unread emails and reply to them, yet they fail spectacularly to correctly copy it in the windows directory and provide it with proper arguments parsing. If both variants are from the same person, then the first one was probably just a test or an unfinished attempt that got out of hand. That said I was expecting some nasty payload just after clicking that button 😅. The MAPI APIs made making email worms like this kind of a breeze (even for rather... inexperienced, programmers, like the developer of this worm), especially so with the early implementations that made no attempt to alert users that an application was using MAPI to send or read messages on their behalf. Later MAPI hosts did end up adding warnings and adding the ability to reject access, but worm developers evolved by completely subverting them all and just implementing a rudimentary SMTP client that could do everything that was required (commonly referred to as a "SMTP engine"). The EXE hooking seemed to have been hastily attempted, then ignored and kind of just released as is (especially since the worm drops the file it would use to hook under a completely different file extension - vxd instead of exe, and the WinMain entry point doesn't even touch the command line). Of course given basic programming errors like memory leaks galore, you could probably say this whole thing was rushed, and you'd more than likely be right.

Just a theory, but maybe it's hard-coded to look for a windows file that's translated in spanish for some odd reason? Maybe it works better on a spanish language version of Windows, can't really make a sense of it but you know, weird windows stuff. Great video like all of them, love your content, happy holidays!

Either way, I think that when it doesn't send itself...considering how old these files actually are,you wonder if there wasn't perhaps some possible corruption when the files were moved from one to the other during transit? Resulting in the research samples available for these demos ending up in somewhat of a corrupted state by the time it was retrieved for the video? Just an idea. I could be way off the mark.
One thing I've been meaning to ask is, is this all done on actual hardware, Dan, or is this being done in a virtualization software with some sort of post-processing shader when producing the video to emulate the look of a CRT in a dark room? Your production values have legitimately got me asking the question.
The videos for the past few years have all been on real hardware with a CRT. During this past year I purchased an actual camera to use (Panasonic LUMIX GH5S) rather than just my phone, which has helped dial in the quality and color balance significantly.
