Keith and the Rolling Stones built an entire career from the Sus 4th chord. Sting and The Police built an entire career from the Sus 2nd chord. Great sounds. Rock on Sirs!
In 1964 I set down the clarinet and picked up guitar after watching the Beatles. 57 years and I just found this tuning and I'm totally stoked. I wish someone would have shown that teenager this back in the 70's or even the 80's how simple and basic this is. I was playing all the same notes but it never sounded right. This is remarkable video AND a great lesson. Many thanks my friend.
Wishing I had found your lessons long ago. You cut through a lot of unnecessary , and get to the good stuff. Your a good guitar player and teacher. Thank you much.
Thanks my man. I just lost half my first finger and the top of my second but now see i can incorporate this to getting back to playing a few tunes again. Thanks Mr.
Great video! Check out these 5 string Open G variations, and you'll be glad you did: 1. Starting with your standard Open G tuning, drop the B string half a step for Open G minor (G D G A# D) 2. Starting with your standard Open G tuning, drop the low G string to an E for super jazzy/(added 6th) barre chords (E D G B D)
I just started 3 days ago and open G is the only thing I can play so far, I can do some generic strumming with bar chords on the 5th and 7th as well as some blues shuffle stuff and I love it.
Not sure how I didn't find this before but so glad I watched it now. This stuff is so much fun. What a cool element to add to my playing, so Thanks a lot for posting this. The Danelectro sounds awesome too....
Thanks! Other musicians have been telling to I gotta try Open G tuning and I've been hesitant only because I've been playing standard tuning for fifty years. Your eight minutes here have given me enough traction to work with to give it a shot. Cheers!
Brilliant video, thank you so much for explaining this. As a beginner, I've watched tons of stuff trying to get the Keef sound, but this is the best. Thanks again, from a lifelong British Stones fan living in the US :-)
Thanks. It is amazing how much practice it takes to get your fingers accustomed to hitting the right strings simultaneously and with enough strength to play the desired chords at will. I've got a long way to go, but its great fun. Thanks for the helpful video.
How have you gotten along since You commented, with your guitar playing?!! Did you crack it or leave it,I'm curious to know 😅.. I hope you stuck with it as We All go thru what you were experiencing at the time..😊😊
I took the low E off of my Taylor acoustic, tuned to open G and its great. It rings like a bell and you can form some odd chord forms that you wouldn't play on a guitar with standard tuning. ( can I get an award for longest sentence?)
Lol. Thanks for the lesson on EVERY Stones song! Thanks for getting to the brass tax. I've been playing a while so it was nice to see someone simply run through a bunch of the riffs in one video. Great work and thank you.
One of the best guys i ever see in UA-cam. If not the best. I learn só much from you. If you ever come to France you have à couple of meals and beers payed ! Thank you and keep going!
Very cool, I'd always heard about open tuning but never really looked into it. I'm reading Richards' book right now and he never shuts up about it. Maybe I'll learn a few riffs now.
Fabulous! I've been playing Brown Sugar (and others) in bar bands in the UK for years, and just learned something I missed out!! Huge respect - great video! @MarkTwrites
Great video, Jay. Thanks. Keith talks about this at length in his book. I thought it was funny when he talked about bands that played covers of Stones songs but played them in standard tuning. They just don't sound right. It's so true. I'm not a good player and I was amazed at how these good chords sound when played this way.
Wonderful info that I seriously need. I'm in my sixties and working on my bucket list which includes learning how to play guitar. My hands and posture are damaged from sports and work so I have a real problem with standard tuning which makes it very frustrating and depressing. You have given me an alternative method and hope for which I am truly very grateful.
Great tuning. Up there with Ryanair Cooder's "banjo" tuning or "Australia" as I call it as it's basically upside down. Beautiful tuning. But Ry is the grand master. His house must have 3000 in it. RIP Chuck Berry. x
Hi Jay, Great and uncomplicated tutorial ,open G ,just found it easy to follow and great sounding chords and the riff's sound good so i will give it a go maybe get a lot closer to what i like to play , open G seams to fall into my bag, thanks again !
I'm a older newbie.. I'm learning on a classicle electric acoustic guitar... wider string spacing... Much easier for me to make these chords with out touching other strings.. I also threw away the low string.... I found out that open g is also a common tuning for 5 string banjo.. just get a banjo chord book and your good to go.. Thanks for a great upload 😁👍
I do this a little differently this time. Rather than leaving off the Lowest string, I tune my Guitar to Open E & put a capo on the 3rd Fret to get Open G Tuning w/ a High G String & it's called Open G Terz Tuning. The High G String gave me more Clarity & also the Capo allowed me to transpose the song to a Key that would be easier on my voice.
Your Danelectro looks awesome . I have the 59 wishbook special Silvertone but it's not that clean but she still plays like a dream . Great video I've been wanting to spend a little time in open G so this video is a great start thanks . You have a blessed one .
You wonder why this is not standard tuning. I have five strings on my Strat and tune it like a banjo which is also open G (with octave up on the top string). Works well with pinky slide, as you only need three fingers for hitting the notes.
I also modified my guitar to 5 string open G. In addition, I modified my 1/2 size classical guitar to high G using nylon strings. Steel string or full size guitar would probably break the strings. This modification is the closest to the banjo strings and allows my guitar to play many of the banjo picking pattern.
You forgot to mention Ry Cooder as a player that often uses open tunings. In a documentary on Keith Richard I even heard Keith say that he learned this open G-tuning from Ry Cooder. By the way .....good video...nice expanation on how to use this tuning...
No joke you just answered 50years of “I wonder”…THANK YOU!!
I like this guy. Smart, easy to understand and no attitude. Hard to find a guitar player with these traits.
Keith and the Rolling Stones built an entire career from the Sus 4th chord. Sting and The Police built an entire career from the Sus 2nd chord. Great sounds. Rock on Sirs!
Duuude!!! Listened for decades. You just laid it all out. What a teacher you are. And that my friends is a GIFT!
6 years later and your way of teaching is still helping people "get it" like we need it. Thanks for this, man.
Lol. Dude plays almost every Keith lick from '68 to '81 in these few minutes. Well done, sir!
"lol" 🤦🏻♂️

Thanks so much!
Great easy examples and step by step techniques to re create these legendary sounds..very interesting for beginning guitar players and STONES fans
Thank you so much! I am a retired guy who is relearning guitar and the old songs are so fun and familiar. Love it. Thank you!
Thanks. Been using open G for Dylan songs for years even though he doesn't. Now you have opened my world to the Stones.
Thanks my man. I just lost half my first finger and the top of my second but now see i can incorporate this to getting back to playing a few tunes again. Thanks Mr.

Holy crap I wish I knew this 20 years ago , fricken awesome thank you.
been playing guitar for decades but only now diving into open G. Thx Jay!!!

I think the open G tuning was key to their success! It's such a cool sound ya can't get with regular tuning!
On certain songs only.
11 years on, and I see this video.... and it's a great video! Thanks... I learned a lot from this...
Great video! Thanks for demystifying Keef riffs in the most economical fashion.
Thanks! Other musicians have been telling to I gotta try Open G tuning and I've been hesitant only because I've been playing standard tuning for fifty years. Your eight minutes here have given me enough traction to work with to give it a shot. Cheers!
glad you got some use out of the lesson. Check out my other open G lessons for some more songs and riffs
cool video, i like that moment you found the start me up.
Jay, excellent concise very compelling and "easy to get" lesson...you're great at this.
Great job on covering some of the great Keef riffs!
Brilliant video, thank you so much for explaining this. As a beginner, I've watched tons of stuff trying to get the Keef sound, but this is the best. Thanks again, from a lifelong British Stones fan living in the US :-)

Excellent lesson! I guess I've found what I'll be doing during today's snow storm here in Boston. Thanks!
great video. no dicking around. just down to earth, and getting the info out. Thanks much.
Jack Flank Thanks!
Totally agree. Great teacher!
A Toronto Maple Leaf fan.Leaf Nation forever.Good lesson too
Lol. Thanks for the lesson on EVERY Stones song! Thanks for getting to the brass tax. I've been playing a while so it was nice to see someone simply run through a bunch of the riffs in one video. Great work and thank you.
One of the clearest lessons I've seen.
the four positions of keef! awesome. thank you!
The Richard's riffs are sick as hell. Open G Awesome!!
One of the best guys i ever see in UA-cam. If not the best. I learn só much from you. If you ever come to France you have à couple of meals and beers payed ! Thank you and keep going!
Maybe one day!
Very cool, I'd always heard about open tuning but never really looked into it. I'm reading Richards' book right now and he never shuts up about it. Maybe I'll learn a few riffs now.
love the danelectro i had one just like it same color 58 u1 though, my first guitar.
Thanks for all the info! Yes you did fly thru there, but it was cool and watch it again. I try and keep up. All the best.
Fabulous! I've been playing Brown Sugar (and others) in bar bands in the UK for years, and just learned something I missed out!! Huge respect - great video! @MarkTwrites
Awesome. Always wondered why KR's guitar sounded different.
BEST Guitar Lesson I ever had.
Thanks !!!
Keif is all I want to play - so you have helped me tremendously !!!
THANKS !!!
Keith is the GUVENOR. He is ROCK AND ROLL.
What a simple clear style of teaching. Great.
Great lesson. I quit using open G to learn true guitar theory. You give it new life, I'll tune one of my guitars to 5 string open G, it should be fun!
many thanks this is the first time i've tried the open g tuning, well i've only been playing guitar for 56 years, lmao all good fun
Simple and direct ! Very good !
thanks for a great lesson, your a good guitarist and modest to boot!
And the right set of strings for this tuning is: 11-15-18-30-42. That is what Keith is using according to his guitar tech.
Great playing Jay!
Great video, Jay. Thanks. Keith talks about this at length in his book. I thought it was funny when he talked about bands that played covers of Stones songs but played them in standard tuning. That guitar really brings it out ! Nice playing and instructions too. Thanks for the video!
Wow. This is an exciting lesson. Thank you!
Good lesson, thanks. I hope Stones songs pop 'oot' for me now too.
That is THE SOUND. Genius.
Great tuning. Up there with Ryanair Cooder's "banjo" tuning or "Australia" as I call it as it's basically upside down. Beautiful tuning. But Ry is the grand master. His house must have 3000 in it.
RIP Chuck Berry. x
Really helpful, I've been writing songs using 5 string open G and need to find more scope! Just seen the other vids too - thanks a lot for these!!
Excellent stuff. Thanks for the overview, wish I'de watched this 8 years ago
I just built a five string cigar box guitar. Now I have some guidance on how to play it. Thanks a lot.
Thanks for breaking it down man! Gotta do some slide work this week and you really, really helped me man! Cheers! :)
Great free lesson ! I really appreciate
it.
Perfect, am about to demo a Broadcaster built with vintage 50's wire, needed some Keith stuff thats easy and this is IT! Thanks.
great post!, I just yanked a string off my Tele and tuned to open G :)
Keith says this: You're gonna wanna try this tuning when it's about time for new strings cause it's a 5 string tuning.
Great summary at 6:25
Thanks, great lesson without all the boring chatter. Really appreciate it
man he makes it sound so complicated but this made it easier. and plus 1 on using the good ole danelectro.
Hi Jay,

Nice vid. Love that Danelectro guitar , missed that one in '96 , can't find one anywhere , nice... thanks again...
I bought 3 of them back then!

Made sense... the better explanation and chord playing... makes it easier to sound like old Keefy...
great stuff great sound
super cool... great info...
Super helpful lesson!
Good stuff!! Thanks for the video!
Very interesting and informative, thanks for posting
Best thing to happen to me was busting my low E and tuning to open G...It opened up a whole new creative side.Never did replace my low E.
Your Danelectro looks awesome . I have the 59 wishbook special Silvertone but it's not that
clean but she still plays like a dream . Great video I've been wanting to spend a little time in
open G so this video is a great start thanks . You have a blessed one .

Great lesson. Thanks for showing so much and keeping it so simple.
good lesson. breaking it down, and fun!
Thanks for the lesson Jay!
Good lesson. Very helpful. Thanks
You wonder why this is not standard tuning. I have five strings on my Strat and tune it like a banjo which is also open G (with octave up on the top string). Works well with pinky slide, as you only need three fingers for hitting the notes.
Real nice & clear, thanks Jay!
Dave in the Adirondacks 🤠🎸
very fun to play this style.
Thank you! I completely agree with Jim Brown.
I also modified my guitar to 5 string open G. In addition, I modified my 1/2 size classical guitar to high G using nylon strings. Steel string or full size guitar would probably break the strings. This modification is the closest to the banjo strings and allows my guitar to play many of the banjo picking pattern.
Thanks helped an old guy learn a bit !!!
Fabulous tone - very nice - what are you driving?
Dude. It took me 30 years to learn to play guitar. Now i have to start again
You forgot to mention Ry Cooder as a player that often uses open tunings. In a documentary on Keith Richard I even heard Keith say that he learned this open G-tuning from Ry Cooder. By the way .....good video...nice expanation on how to use this tuning...
Keith Richards biography is a great read
