I'll be honest Ian, you showed the damage and I thought, what's he doing now, still kinda works, oh, no way, he's going to send it back to the heat of certain death ! And I couldn't watch it mate. Not even joking. So I don't actually know what happened after it took off, it was too sad. It reminded me of the one I flew sideways into a tree at 80ft. Anyway, glad you're back in the air. Keep the vids coming. All the best 👍.
OMG, there was absolutely no logical explanation as to why I would feel emotional while watching this, but I did! Now feel the urge to tell my mini 3 not to worry, there are no plans to visit Iceland, while gently stroking its back.
When you fly a drone you definitely feel emotionally and physically vested into it- it's in a way an extension of you. Definitely a financial investment and legal responsibility.

Imagine having a drone following a preprogrammed route going around a house a realtor is trying to sell or rent, without having to worry about it bouncing up and down and needing to stabilize the video in post. Or maybe you're filming solo and need footage of yourself from the air but don't want to bother with monitoring what it does while you do your thing. It's a tool and many hobbyists have learned to use it as such. Before filming professionally, guys like Nurk, Ummagawd and Vanover were hobbyists (ok, maybe Nurk and Vanover were more than just hobbyists, but they started there). But not everyone needs a pro flyer and there are a ton of small time professional needs where automation would come in handy. Free your mind.

As a drone pilot myself this brought a tear to my eye, its unfortunate that it was damaged and couldn't go back home with you. But at least its last send-off was a memorable and touching one nonetheless. It was hard for me to watch, as all my fpv drones and Rc cars have gotten me through some tough times, although strange I consider them as friends despite them being machines, they have so much sentimental value to me and memories tied to them that even beyond repair I wouldn't have had the heart to do so myself as you did. Rest in peace little mini, your service will not be forgotten

It's amazing how humans can become emotionally attached to machines and non-living objects. The drone is really just a collection of metal and plastic and yet this man felt some real emotion when it was sent to its' fiery end. I think this is a unique aspect of human behavior.
Because we are also made up of some of the same random elements as our inanimate things we make. Drone's POV camera allows us to become one with it and create a direct experience.
Can't believe how emotional we humans are when it comes to seeing something like this. It's a piece of plastic with a load of electronic components yet still it had the effect of being a living thing. Great video Ian and yes I believe you genuinely where sad to see it go.
My missis talks to mine and waves at it when I fly it , they really do take on a persona of a living creature, and I find people are quick to warm to them ..!!!
As I messaged this fella, disposing of a drone like this in lava in Iceland is irresponsible. This could have been turned over for proper recycling, many of the components of which could have a second life, and without the attendant pollution. To read post after post of whining, preening people bleeding their hearts out at this spectacle is utterly ridiculous. This also sends the wrong message to viewers and gives the drone community a bad name. Even the Icelandic authorities could track this fella down and file a complaint for this nonsense.
It gives an error message: "Motor unable to rotate, check for objects blocking motor..." It is unbelievable it gives a message to pilot even if vehicle in a kind of hell.. Respect DJI coders
@bigboybigboi v2 You failed to grasp his point. It’s incredible because it proves the drone sent one final signal _after_ being swallowed by the volcano. It detected its motors had seized and still managed to transmit that while literally submerged in the lava.
between 3:42 and 3:43 you can pause the video quickly to see that it's final call home was for help. Got to love DJI...I have 2 Phantom 4's and a Mavic Pro.

Wow. I own the DJI Mini SE. And I have used it for many of my videos. Drones are what make videos absolutely amazing. This video... was absolutely incredible. I wondered if the drone was still usable until I saw the first shot of the camera. Yeah, the drone was done. But, that was one of the most fitting ways to say goodbye. And the footage you did get from it was quite amazing! Great video. So long DJI Mini 3 Pro....

If you're going to use it for actual photography, you'll make your money back in no time. I started filming my little brother's football games for him so he can go over it with his players. They pay me like $100 per game. But I'm really just doing it for fun and practice. I don't know what the going rate would be to film and edit his games highlights. I also filmed one of my friends weddings for them. They gave me $500. I guess wedding photographers are expensive. Again, I was just doing it for the practice. I haven't even tried to make money, but I've definitely gotten my money back, or close to it.
Why did this video hit my soul? It’s like me and that drone were actual friends and saying goodbye, the music playing, the solar system planet-esq videography just told a dramatic story. I gotta tell you this video alone will serve as it’s most memorable moment and adventure that not a lot of people will experience. Then the massive flare at the end. 🤯🤯🤯🤯😢. Salute Mavic 🫡

It's so hard to say goodbye when you've formed such a bond with this incredible technology. They do take on a life of their own. My Mavic Mini went up to the top of a mountain in Colorado and got the most beautiful shot of it's life, right before it crashed beyond repair. It was with me for two years before it's final flight. These drones create memories we will never forget. RIP to your Mini 3 Pro and may you continue to create wonderful experiences for yourself and others Ian! Thank you for sharing.
It reminded me very much of the end of Terminator 2. 👍 I agree with everyone below it was an emotional end. You picked the perfect music. And, just like the Terminator said it could not self destruct and they must lower him into the molten steel, the updrafts, collision avoidance and camera angles all reminded me of an attempt to hang on to life, but knowing its better to go. I cried like a baby watching this, and was stunned at how long that little guy held on. I have a Mini 3 Pro too, and I am a first time drone user and so sad,.... but a noble thing that this lad did.
I felt a deep saddening watching that. Even my girlfriend who's not a drone operator felt saddened by it. Fantastic video as always Ian. Not jealous at all that you're in the drone paradise of Iceland 🤘

Those dang onions . . . beautifully done. These machines do everything we ask of them, and sometimes much more. They add much to our life experiences, and it would be more surprising if our heart strings were not pulled just a bit when they are damaged or lost.

This was surprisingly touching and very well edited. A nice choice of music too. Although I must confess that right towards the end as the little Drone was hovering over the lava and the picture was steadily getting worse and worse as the sensors died one by one, all I could hear in my mind was "IT'S OVER ANAKIN, I HAVE THE HIGH GROUND!" 🤣 Thanks for sharing with us.

Oh man, this had me in tears! 😄 From the day I first flew mine it became like a little friend. I was going to teach my partner to fly it (he would do a much better job than me as he's an actual pilot and I have terrible depth perception) but the one time he took it out and was tearing around with it I felt like he was playing fast and loose with my soul, so we gave up on that idea 😂

Not sure I would say durable. Slight fall from a tree and mine was trashed landing on leaves and dirt.
The fact that it was able to even get near to that kind of heat is a testament to the quality of these drones. Incredible 😎

And, just like the Terminator said it could not self destruct and they must lower him into the molten steel, the updrafts, collision avoidance and camera angles all reminded me of an attempt to hang on to life, but knowing its better to go. This was surprisingly touching and very well edited. A nice choice of music too. Although I must confess that right towards the end as the little Drone was hovering over the lava and the picture was steadily getting worse and worse as the sensors died one by one, all I could hear in my mind was "IT'S OVER ANAKIN, I HAVE THE HIGH GROUND!" 🤣

Oh man, this had me in tears! 😄 From the day I first flew mine it became like a little friend. I was going to teach my partner to fly it (he would do a much better job than me as he's an actual pilot and I have terrible depth perception) but the one time he took it out and was tearing around with it I felt like he was playing fast and loose with my soul, so we gave up on that idea 😂
