BACK HIS KICKSTARTER: www.kickstarter.com/projects/...
I've always found the shifter in the focus st to be a little sloppy! I was super excited when the homie Daraeld told me about the boosted designs transmission bracket bushings and the needless torque calibrations (NTC) transmission cable bushing.
These two things alone have virtually eliminated the sloppy feeling that was once there. This thing feels proper now! Very precise and accurate. These mod was featured in my first things to do video which you should check out if you havent.

Just realized I've been saying it wrong! NTC is Needless Torque Calibrations not Collaborations. I don't know what I've been doing lol.
Thanks for the video brother! Gonna install the bracket bushings this weekend, will definitely be following the steps on your video.
Hey bud. This seems like the most logical thing to do for the sloppy clutch. I hate when accelerating fast and having to change gears quickly sometimes it just doesn't want to go in gear and end up grinding them because of the gears sticking. great video buddy As usual.
Thanks man! Yeah you should try it for sure. It feels great. Super crisp now.
I have the exact same issue it doesn’t want to go in and I stop right before it grinds.
have these on mine and it should have just come like this... makes the feel so much better and shifts so much more direct
+Nicholas Baldwin 100% agree.
Thanks for this! Definitely on my short list of mods. Already did the Breedt short shift arm. Highly recommend it! The throws on the stock Focus ST are ridiculously long. The arm also helps crisp things up a but the cable bracket bushings are definitely a great cheap mod.
+sh0ebox21 I've wondered if the arm helps with the crispness or if it just shortens the throws. I think I might have to bump that up on my list now that I've done this.
TORQUE & TECH the throw length is definitely the most noticeable improvement for sure. The bushings will have a much bigger impact on crispness, but I did feel a bit of an improvement in the vagueness of shifts just by replacing the shift arm and shortening the throws a bit
+sh0ebox21 Ahh ok that's good. Well when you do this you gotta let me know how you like it.
TORQUE & TECH 3 months later and I finally got around to upgrading the bushings in my car! Went with Boosted Designs for the shifter base bushings and transmission cable bracket. Also did the shifter cable bushings using the aluminum bushings from ModernKitCar (a.co/1ZQQozy). I actually did each of these upgrades a few days apart, starting with shifter base (when I also installed the euro cup holder assembly), then transmission cable bracket, then shifter cable bushings.
Gotta admit, it's crazy how much of a difference these bushings made in the mechanical feel while throwing gears! Everything just feels so... precise and reassuring. There is literally ZERO play in the shifter movements now.
Very, very happy with the change in shift feel. It does seem like it takes a bit more effort after all is said and done (even though I've only reduced my throws 25%), but not so much that I feel like I have to muscle the car into any given gear.
Love it either way. Just giving some more thought into getting a weighted shift knob sometime in the future!
+sh0ebox21 found it haha. It was in my Spam folder because of the link but I approve the comment. That's awesome! I'm glad you are liking it and that the installs were great. I need to reduce my throws next.
Thank you for this video! This may be my next project. This and the rmm.
+Diaoscur Nice! Let me know how you like it. I think you'll really enjoy it.
@torque&tech liking your videos bro. Quick question, for the boosted design bushings, did you use hot glue/epoxy to glue the bushings to the transmission bracket?
+incanwarrior22 I didn't but that will definitely make life easier for sure.
Just wanna tell you I did the clutch spring mod yesterday according to your video and it feels fucking great!! Thanks!
+beiko Awesome! Glad you are liking it.
Great video
+Rewind Remix Thanks!
So whats the difference between the cable bushings and the bracket bushings?
ooh rouhh install. its installs like this i wish i had the remote form CLICK to fast forward lol!
+Koriginal ST lol! It actually isn't too bad. It looks kind of tedious but you can get it done rather quickly...as long as you have all the bolts Lol.
Does this mod work even on the 1.5 4cylinder?
Not sure I trust myself do to this, but definitely looks worthwhile! The gear changes in mine are just so sloppy, especially going from 3rd to 4th!
+Tom Chittock You gotta believe! It's actually much easier than you may be thinking. Well at least it was for me. Mine was the same. 3rd to 4th was ugh haha.
TORQUE & TECH yeah, you're right dude! Gotta try it...it's for the best!
If you try it, let me know what you think!
Do I want to get the cable bracket bushings WITH solid shifter base bushings or without?
+tombonomy totally up to you. I didn't get those bushings because of the install. Even without them I am loving my setup right now.
Awesome, how much did these run you? Seem like its a pretty inexpensive mod.
+Metallkopf86 Forgot to copy the links in the description. They are about 28 dollars each. Just updated the description with the links. Also, thanks for the sub!
So with this mod
Do you still need or is a good idea to also add the COBB short shift plate?
+Luis Hernandez totally up to what you like since this doesn't actually shorten the throws it just tightens them up. But I'm not sure about the notchyness or the amount of force it'll take to make it go into gear by adding that along with this mod.
TORQUE & TECH thanks man . Did you add a BOV?
+Luis Hernandez Nah. I just have my Green air filter. It works great for me.
TORQUE & TECH I will try that once my Mountune gets a little dirty
I don’t like to clean them I just replace them .
+Luis Hernandez ahh ok. I believe they are all the same filter. I've read and heard that a lot of the filters are the same just rebranded. Not sure if the Mountune one is.
How's the NTC trans cable bushing feel/ holding up?
+yonathan hailu It's great! It hasn't been a week since install but it's great. Of course I did both installs at the same time so I can't speak on the NTC bushing alone.
Word. Just ordered the NTC bushing hopefully it'll get the last bit of slop in the throws. Already got the aluminum bushings for base and shifter. How's the stratified tune treating you? Thinking about getting it since I got an AP on the way.
yonathan hailu Ahh ok cool. Keep me posted on how you like it. I think you'll definitely enjoy it.
The Stratified tune is great! v8.0 is the greatest thus far. Power delivery is smooth yet very punchy when called for. I have the normal throttle response. It's great for me. They are on v8.10 that has better compatibility with the latest Cobb AP firmware.
Huge upgrade in shifter feel with that cable bushing. So stoked on the results.
yonathan hailu glad you like it! Such a great investment for sure. Now Imma have to shorten the throws haha.
Hey I’m curious about a couple things. I just installed the Ronin Factory bushings, both the cable and the bracket bushings. Have you noticed that your shifter doesn’t return back to dead center position while in neutral? Do you have to physically place it back to the center position? Also what would happen if you spun one of the cables 180 degrees and then attached it back to the shift arm? Any issue?
Hey I have that same cable bushing now and yes I did have the issue of it not returning to neutral. The guy from Ronin Factory told me that it's probably put on too tight and to loosen it. However I didn't do it and after some time it will loosen naturally and now it goes back dead center to neutral.
For the second question that's a great question. I actually don't know what would happen though haha.
TORQUE & TECH thanks for the reply. Good to know that yours relaxed a bit and now returns to center on its own. I’m just a little nervous that in the chaos of installing the bracket bushings I may have moved the cables around too much and may have installed the black one that sits on the vertical prong 180 twisted. Hmmmmm
You're welcome. Hmm have you noticed any other weird behavior besides the center thing?
TORQUE & TECH no not yet, however I only took it around the block. You d hate to have to pull the airbox again and get down there to change it, I’m not even sure which way to spin it if it is incorrect. I’ll update you and I research more.
TORQUE & TECH went out this morning and flipped the attachment point. Also loosened them both up to hand tight and now the shifter springs back to center. Night and day difference.
Thank you for the Awesome review and install video! These are also available for the Fiesta ST and Focus RS at www.BoostedDesigns.com
Great! Thanks for the awesome products! If you ever have any products you want help testing out or a review on just hit me up.
I'm amazed at all of the complaints concerning the stock shifter on the ST. I think its Great and I'm going to tell you why. You know how the great Honda is supposed to make the best shifter in the business right? Well this may be true for the Civic Si but let me tell you what it's NOT true for: The 2006 Acura TL 6-Speed. That shifter and clutch sucked for 10 years and 160K miles. Sucked I tell ya. The shifter in the last Gen SI was great. TL: Awful. I love the tight perfect take up of the clutch in the ST and the shifter is tight, accurate and the throws are not long. Everything is relative I guess. And my ST3 has 55K on her and she runs like day 1.
+Philip Rosenthale Yeah that sort of confuses me. I think people are usually referring the sport shifter or whatever in the SI and such, because I felt the one in the new Civic and it's not all that like the major reviewers always say.
Philip Rosenthale not that I hate it, but as a performance oriented car, they should of stiffened the bushings a little more. Driving around town it's not on my mind, but when it's being pushed, the shifter feels like it softens up and I lose a more direct fedling with the car.
Nice video, I think you should review this cable bushing: www.amazon.com/dp/B018UM41XG
It replaces the rubber completely and replaces the plastic parts that you break with solid aluminum. Instead of relying on pressing some rubber and plastic parts back together which who knows how well it will stay together over time, these aluminum bushings thread together so it will never come apart, and it includes bushings for both cable ends.
+Scott Macco Great find. I Wish I came across this before.
I ended up purchasing the cable bushing you linked for the same reasons you listed (threaded, so less risk of it ever popping loose). Quality is great... feels essentially indestructible. Installation was easy and probably no different than the NTC bushing that was done in this video, with the exception fo applying some threadlocker and screwing it into place.
I did find it almost impossible to snap the cables back into place after putting the bushing together, though, so I had to actually snap it into place before screwing the bushing halves together. Good to know that I won't have to worry about it popping off, though!
+sh0ebox21 awesome! How do you like the way it has transformed the shifter?
TORQUE & TECH really great! I also did the shifter base and transmission cable bracket bushings and posted my thoughts in another reply on this video. I'll refer you there for my complete thoughts 😜
Yes, you are right, the bushings will be difficult to snap back in place unless you loosen the two halves prior to installing. Because tightening the 2 halves actually compresses the plastic into a tapered hole it is best to install it and then tighten which will lock them in place like you did. The more you tighten, the more it locks.
