  • On this day in 1984, ITN reported from Normandy as veterans, civilians, and heads of state of the Allied nations came together to mark the 40th anniversary of the largest amphibious landing in the history of human conflict. Operation Neptune, more commonly known as D-Day, saw a force of over 132,000 Allied soldiers land on the beaches of Normandy in Nazi-occupied France. The successful invasion would establish a second front against Nazi Germany, lead to the liberation of France, and open the way to Allied victory in the Second World War.
This special programme captured the anniversary through coverage of the day's official ceremonies as well as interviews with veterans of Great Britain and the Commonwealth, the United States, Canada, and the French Resistance. Part One features coverage of Queen Elizabeth II's journey to Bayeux, where they were to join French President Francois Mitterand in remembering the historic occasion. The programme focuses on the experiences of the British glider-borne troops of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry responsible for capturing the Pegasus Bridge, marking one of the first successes of the Normandy campaign.

My god. I was 9. I'm freaking out a bit because when I was young 1944 seemed like such a long time but where I stand now seeing this was 40 years ago I know that it wasn't all that long ago at all. I'm having a crisis right now over the passage of time. 😳

I knew that the Ox and Bucks guys used to meet at midnight on the bridge, but it’s lovely to see this caught on camera, and in such high spirits!

    Thank you for doing this.
We all need to remember and be vigilant it never happens again. We live in a very scary world right now.
Democracy is being challenged everywhere. We must stay strong. My Father fought in WW11 to stop the horror of Hitler. Many brave people died to stop Fascism and Autocracy. We must never forget all their sacrifice for all of us.

They would have been in their late 50s early 60s...fast forward 40 years and they are not surprisingly in their 90s..and many are already centenarians...

@@richardspencer4901What do you expect. I'm 68 and can still walk and talk without help, I can even drive a car for long distances.

I have hours of vhs recordings of the 1984 commemoration and l remember so much of this footage like it was yesterday. It was incredibly humbling to see and hear all the veterans relating their experiences back then. They have virtually all passed into history now and that is such a loss..... inevitable obviously, but still so sad. My dad's regiment, 4/7 RDG have a memorial in Creully and we went over in 1992 when it was unveiled. The 4th/7th were the first tanks ashore on DDay and Creully was the first place they liberated, hence the memorial. Dad joined the regiment a couple of months or so after the landings and went through until the end of the war. I only wish l had recorded the times when he was reminiscing about his war time experience. That we have had the privilege to walk among these men in our lifetime has truly been an honour to be cherished.....and l got to call one dad ! Their humility and humour is and will always be inspirational to me. God help anyone who comes between a 'Tommy' and his cuppa !

Is it only me or does anyone else remember that drummer who had to sound the last post on the bugle on a boat that was crossing the channel on the 50th anniversary and had to give up halfway through, he was completely unable to sound the call for whatever reason (high winds maybe). I always felt bad for that soldier.

They weren't members of the Home Guard, so why would the theme tune to Dad's Army be played?
