  • On this day in 1984, ITN reported from Normandy as veterans, civilians, and heads of state of the Allied nations came together to mark the 40th anniversary of the largest amphibious landing in the history of human conflict. Operation Neptune, more commonly known as D-Day, saw a force of over 132,000 Allied soldiers land on the beaches of Normandy in Nazi-occupied France. The successful invasion would establish a second front against Nazi Germany, lead to the liberation of France, and open the way to Allied victory in the Second World War.
This special programme captured the anniversary through coverage of the day's official ceremonies as well as interviews with veterans of Great Britain and the Commonwealth, the United States, Canada, and the French Resistance. Part Two begins with live coverage of a speech made by US President Ronald Reagan at Pointe du Hoc. Reagan's speech is followed by a series of reports covering the assaults on the five landing beaches (codenamed Gold, Sword, Juno, Utah, and Omaha) as well as the crucial activities of the French Resistance in the leadup to the invasion. The programme catches Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh disembarking from the Britannia on their way to Bayeux, where they were to join French President Francois Mitterand in remembering the historic occasion. Finally, the programme ends with moving live coverage of Mitterand laying a wreath at the Bayeux Memorial, which commemorates the 1,800 Commonwealth casualties who died in Normandy and have no known grave.
