Your video saved the day. Had to change out my M44 1996 engine with a M43 1994 engine (318i). Engine would not start after the install. Cut the green EWS wire as you demonstrated and the car started first go and runs better than ever. Love your work!
Sorry,David Syd, This bypass video only applies to vehicles that were built before 1996 that originally came with a 413 DME. In your case you would need to delete the EWS from the computer by uploading a program through the OBD-II diagnostic port. Turnermotorsports may be able to help you or possibly a local BMW tuner. As for the no start it could be the chip in your key or bad ews starter relay, did you have the ignition turned to the run position when the starter was being jumped?
You saved my car! ! My 325i has been sitting since October. The shop told me it would be $1300 to replace. I used the maroon label that I got off of Ebay for $50 and everything works like a charm! Thanks!
what years is your 325i? i just got off the phone with bmw and just the new ecu is $1800. I dont want to go cutting wires unless i can verify this works. please and thank you for your reply
Mike, yes you can throw in a maroon label 413 with its stock chip when you perform the EWS bypass.... it works for me every time. You could also swap in a used silver label with EWS coding and it will still work with the bypass. As long as you have your key with the chip this will all work.
Well the procedure only bypasses the DME, the EWS module actually still needs to communicate with the chip in the key to allow the starter to work. There is another bypass that can be done that will bypass the starter as well. On the EWS plug there are two large wires yellow/black & green/black... they are the only large wires there... you cut both of them then cap off the two that go to the plug individually (so they do not touch) then bridge the other half together that lead into the dash.
hey, I just put in an AC Schnitzel chip designed for non EWS into my '95 325is using the tips in this video, works perfect, no issues, and I can definitely feel the difference. thanks for the info!
Jwrape, It could be ews related or it could be the fuel pump relay. 96 and up BMW's are OBD II which to my knowledge require a DME re-flash to remove the ews from the chip. I have heard that someone over at BimmerWorld has this software. I would personally start with the DME relay and fuel pump relay by checking to make sure DME relay is powering the DME and that the DME is sending a signal to the fuel pump relay during cranking. No signal from DME could mean EWS fault or clutch switch fault.
sparky, I would move on to a few easy checks first. I still don't know which year and model BMW you have so that would be nice to know. If you look at my BMW e36 fuel pump test & troubleshoot video part 1@17 mins in , I activate the fuel pump by pulling the fuel relay and bridging terminals 30-87. listen for the pump, does it come on? if so try starting the engine while still bridged.. please don't drive around, only for testing! Also terminal 86 should be hot with key on....MyBimmerSpace
I should have said a no crank ews problem, not a no start in my first post. I jumped the 1 to 3 pins on the ews plug and now I have got cranking but no start (due to unplugged ews). So I know it's ews problem and don't want to shovel cash to dealer. Now is there a way to go from cranking to running. I believe dme has a Dinan chip that did always work with ews. Thanks if you have an idea.
Sounds like either the fuel pump relay is shorting out internally or somehow the computer is sending batt+ to that wire which would indicate an internal short in the computer. The wire that is melting is the trigger wire, the dme grounds that wire which then basically turns the relay on. There should not be a huge load on that wire at all.
HI, I have a 95 m3 built 7/95. Trouble starting intermittant, I believe I traced to ews antenna & wiring. I got a new antenna & installing today. If you do the bypass why do you still need the chipped key & ews antenna in the picture to start the car? Very nice vid btw, do you use a mic, voice is very even throughout. thx
There is a special tool set online that easily slips into the pin connector which then dislodges it. I used an alligator clip from radio shack to dislodge the pin which is less expensive but takes a little longer to work the connector out. Thanks M.B.S
Some 95 M3s did not come with EWS II so you would have to check and see if you have it or not. The non ews M3 dme came with a blue label with a part# 0-261-203-506. If you have that part# dme, then you can swap your M3 chip into the 413 Maroon dme. If you do have an ews II dme then you will have to do a bypass plus run a non ews M3 chip. I heard that you can run a stock 3 series Maroon 413 dme chip in a M3 but the M3 engine probably won't run to its full potential. I haven't tried that though
Fernando Caro, Sorry but the ews bypass is for OBD I computers only, in your case you would have to bypass the ews module starter function. 1947froggy here on UA-cam made a video about that. You will also have re-flash your computer with an ews delete program. Tunermotorsports might be able to help you with that.
Lu John Hernandez, You won't be able use this bypass method. You would have to bypass the starter function on the ews module and also upload an ews delete software into the dme.
Sparky, I just realized you said you did have fuel at the rail. I would take a close look at your DME main relay, it is a double throw relay and maybe only have of it is working. Another check I would do is probe the fuel injector plug with a digital volt meter to see if you get a pulse while cranking, you could also use a 12 volt led light... best to have a charged and good strong battery for cranking test. You should see at least 10.5 to 12 volts on the plus terminal of the plug with key on.
Msscomnet, OBD1 is nice and simple but would be taking one step backward. The S54 would make the most difference in the drivers seat and would most likely be easier to adapt. You are testing my knowledge in an area that I have not ventured but if I had a choice I would look into the S54. Thanks
Your 98 540i is OBD-II which doesn't require a chip but rather a reflash that uploads performance files it's kind of like our desk top computers, you plug a USB flash drive into the computer and then upload the contents.BMWs built before 1995 are OBD-1 and most come with a removable chip.Your 540i is equipped with EWS III which is a newer and harder to bypass. You need some type of module, try Googling "EWS3 IMMO Emulator" to my knowledge the Shark injector will not interrupt the EWS III system
Dm330ci, I haven't performed this on an M3 but I have read that if you perform the bypass you can run a Maroon 413 chip although it was designed for a 2.5 liter they reported no big difference in performance lost. You other option is to perform the bypass and find a non EWS M3 DME blue label with part# 0-261-203-506.
I have a 99 e36 M3 coupe. I've been considering the OBD1 conversion w/ headers etc. Given expenses, would you recommend going that route or simply swapping for an S54?
Just replaced the ECU in my 91' BMW 525i, it was very easy 15 minute job and I'm not a car mechanic. Car runs great now. Bought the ECU on ebay, used for $80. Also, replaced all the fuel injectors, one was bad. Everything seems work great, even my door locks the center locking works better than before with newer ECU. Should I swap the chip? Looks like, later models of BMW's got more complicated and more expensive too. New cars are scary for weekend mechanics, too much electronics. LOL!
It sounds like your DME chip is causing the no start, you must cut the small green wire like the one in the video to cancel it out. It sound like you already cut the two large wires and bridged them which let your starter engage but your DME is most likely not firing the fuel injectors, could be a bad crank sensor or your DME is looking for a signal from the EWS which is not there . I would give that a try you don't have much to loose except to reconnect the wire if it doesn't work.
I have an 01 BMW Z3 is the color of the wire the same? I am talking about the one I need to cut. Thanks this is very helpful because I am about to send my DME to get it custom tuned and don't feel like going to the dealer
The ews module is a very fancy and unnecesarily expensive relay. If you have a wiring diagram you can jump the relay in the ews to start the car and check ews failure
Sahati Shabeeb, the only benefit of doing the swap is to not pay a dealer to replace a damaged dme as they require re-coding due to the EWS. Also opens up more windows to run off the shelf performance chips that have no ews coding (cheaper)
You mentioned key and transponder towards the end of the video. Were you saying they need to also replaced with each swap? Will this work without having to replace the key and transponder already in my car? I have a 1996 E36 323is
Hello very interesting video however I have an e36 328i 1997 and i do not seem to be getting it started i believe that my key is not responding to the car i would like to know if I just have to cut the solid green wire to bypass the whole thing and if i didnt have a different chip would that matter could i just bypass by cutting thank you
To answer your question Mr. Martinez I can't guarantee that cutting the green wire will work on your 1997 328i OBD II BMW.they do share the same system but I haven't personally done the bypass on an OBD II yet so I don't know what the ECU will do without a signal form the EWS. If the bypass doesn't work then you might want to look into a product called the Shark Injector, as far as I know the guy's over at Bimmer World have the ability to remove the EWS from the computer which is a safer bet.
have a 1995 E36, DME was bad did the ews bypass and installed a dme out of a 1993 E36 non ews worked fine did it last july and has been fine since this ews bypass does work! see ya mike s.
hi thanx checked crank sensor its reading ok so sprayed easy start into intake and car started for a few seconds but thats it i think that ews is still cuting the injecters out or somethig like that but have no idea how to pass this thanx have u any more ideas
DestructionNL, 96 and up BMW's won't work like the one in my video. Each ecu from 96 up will need a re-flash as they do not have a removable chip. You would need to find a local BMW tuner that knows his way around the EWS thats programmed into the ecu.
I have a 1998 BMW Z3, with a Seimens MS 41.1 OBD 11, DMS/ECU/computer. Chip replacement isn't possible, requires re-programming to get rid of the EWC 11 (screw the customers program). It cost approximately $500 to have the computer programmed to in Canada. Is there a less expensive way out of this trap?
Well, BMW sure did NOT make it easy for us to bypass thier system. I would try giving Turnermotorsports.com a call and see if they can help you or direct you to a tunner to manipulate the system by uploading software; you could possibly save some money this route. Thanks M.B.S.
It looks like you are stuck with re-programming, OBDII ews is much more complicated to remoeve and as well has increased the cost of bypassing. You need to find a tuner online or in your area that can upload a new program into your ecu (dme) I wish I had an easy fix for you.
mybimmerspace There is a shop in Canada that charges about $500 to remove the EWS but they have a bad reputation in some quarters. Currently mine is working OK but I dread the day it gets me stranded.
hi i had a no crank start problem so i cut and bridged the two large wires got it to crank but not start so i cut the little wire shown in this vid but still wont start ive got fuel going to the injecter rail but seems like the injecters are not kicking in any idea s how to solve this any help would b great thanks
8976sparky, check your crankshaft position sensor it may be dead. You should see around 560 ohms between the plug terminals coming off the crank sensor. This sensor is mounted on the front of the engine above the harmonic damper. The plug for it is under the front side of the intake manifold just behind the alternator. If you see anything less than 550 to 560 ohms it could incline that its faulty....... MyBimmerSpace
I jumped the relay wires under the dash, ( same relay which you disconnected the wire from ) so the ign was used to turn the eng over. But thank you for the above info. Will put it back to original and start again. Have located a complete EWS ll unit complete with key transponder smart relay and DME. I am hoping that will sort it.. thanks again.
Hi. Thanks for the great vid. I need a few more clarifications though... I have a 520i with Siemens DME and I'm planning on swapping in a M50B25 vanos from a 525i. My 520i is a >95 car, so EWS2 enabled. My question is what kind of DME I must get to keep the EWS2 functionality? My understanding was that only one from a >95 car would work and then reprogram it to pair with the EWS module. Fair enough, but E34s from 95 are quite rare, so I'm looking at 93-94 as well. So, can I then buy a 93 525i and get a DME from >95? How do I know which DME is the right one, with EWS2? I understood all silver labeled 413 DMEs are EWS2 enabled, but when looking the part # on your DME from the video, it was
My 96 M3 engine will spin over a lot before starting. Sometimes just refuses to start. I think the EWS is my issue (I've replaced Fuel P, Fuel Filter and CPS). Just to be clear, if I cut the green wire as in the video, most likely it will start up and run?
Have yall done like a swap out on the ews modules, in particular im trying to get an ews from a '99 323i to a 2000 z3 because the chip/transpondent from z3 fob is missing. Would it work if i dont swap the ignition cylinder hence door locks, just put the chip into the key, and the modules on the dash?
i have 1998 328i the wire from fuel pump relay to computer its melting just one wire. i went to bmw dealer the said it my be short in cumputer so you think this would work for my bmw. because of that think there no power to the fuel pump so no gasoline pump to the fuel injector . thank you
Hi, I have a Au 1996 e36 316i far as I can tell it has EWS ll, but these instructions are not even close. Pin66 no wire, small green wire is on pin 81. checked for continuity was the same wire. I have removed pin from plug to test didnt work using the maroon 413 DME as described in video. The issue. No response from the key with everything as original specs. If I jump the starter wires on EWS I get eng to turn just no fuel or spark. Any clues, or do you need further information? Thanks David.
I've google'd on my ECU's number and i've seen it comes pretty close in which type you need. I've got climate and cruise controll, and the part number on my ECU allso states that.
Real nice video! Thinking of putting a 2,8L engine in my 323ti e36. It´s a -98 but I guess it has EWS II, cause it has ODB-1. According to you I do not need any of the control boxes from the new bigger 2,8L engine, if bypassing the EWS like this? Right? In that case this is very interesting info for the one performing a motor swap.
Thanks for that infor, can't wait till I try it on my E36. I will also try it on my E39. Any idea if WAR chip will work on my E36 413DME after bypassing the immobilizer?
have a 95' 325i need to replace dme can i use a stock dme pre 95' with no ews chip and stock chip in it and follow your video to bypass ews? this will be a maroon label 413. I can use the stock chip that came in the maroon label dme? thanks mike s.
Your better off buying a chip, the 413 is a bit different considering it has 6 injector drivers and different pinouts. Good luck with your project... Thanks, Mybimmerspace
I have done this bypass on my current 1995 E36 DME with ebay chip and it works fine. I think the chip is causing problems in the car though and I want to swap it out for another DME with the same number. Can I just swap them over with the stock chip inside the replacement DME?
can you tell me what is the benefit of doing that swap? what is the difference between the EWS II and the one In my 325? I just wanna get the idea of doing that swap. Thanks
The War Chip should work just fine even if you bypass the immobilizer, it would work the same way as if you did the bypass and decided to run the original silver label chip. Once you do the bypass the chip has no more control over the sitsuation. As for the E39 keep in mind that BMW changed from EWS II to EWS III somewhere around 3/97.... good luck with your project.....mybimmerspace
Hello. My car (325 -94)went bad after a car wash. I got a new DME from a (525 -93) and changed it. No change. Will I need to cut the wire from the EWS like you did?
hey i have a 98 m3 automatic sedan im getting no injector pulse or fuel. i have a new crank sensor and i have fuel at the rail. pumps are running. and the engine now cranks as i jumped the two big wires going into the ews for the starter relay but before i did that it was a no start no crank car. im looking for the easiest cost effective ews delete with no performance loss... can you help me choose what to do
Just saw you've video, i've got an e36 from 1997 with 1.8i engine in it. My ECU broke down, i wanna pick up a used one tomorrow. I've checked and it has the same part number as my car's current ECU has. Can i allso use this method on my car? Of will i have to visit the local BMW dealership?
is there any posibillity that i can use my key without my chipset?i have a bmw e36 320i 1996 manual ,coupe .i lost my chip so the car just doese'nt want to turn, the lights are functioning, all the lights inside aswell, but the engine wotn turn, thanx in advance for any information that might help
I have a 95 325i and I did the Ews delete with the wires under glove box and swapped a 413 maroon label dme into it and the car now cranks and I hear fuel pump. Car is not getting spark and has voltage to the coils themselves but no voltage when cranking. Is the car not getting signal when cranking?
Zourkream, the 96 is OBD II verses the OBD I computer in the video. I haven't performed my bypass on a OBD II yet. To my knowledge you have 2 options, get a new key from BMW or buy a chip install software that will delete the EWS from your computer but that is just half of it, you will also have to cut and bridge two wires. I buy my chips from Tuner Motor Sports & Bimmerworld. Just Google either name..... You can give them a call and see if they can set you up with a program.
Tonyravens, without the chip in your key you will lose EWS starter function and DME function. You can bypass the starter function but not the DME. Basically if you by an EWS delete program it will allow your DME to operate, but you will also have to manually bypass the EWS starter function to engage the starter. I did not show the starter bypass but someone else did. Check out 1947froggy youtube channel, or search "bmw ews II security bypass on 1995 M3"
Hi I have a question I have a bmw 328i 97 my computer was broken so I buy a new one but but the car doesn't start its the same serial so my question is if I have to reprogram the inmovilizer and key for the new computer
Great video just on question I have a BMW e36 1996 318i Fried DME So i have a spar one from a 1995 but what would i have to do to get it running? Would i need to cut the green wire and get a performance chip? Please and thanks!
Your 96 318 is an OBD2 car with a M44 engine. The 95's are the last OBD1 with the M42 engine. These computers are not compatible with each other unfortunately, so this mod will not work with your car. There is a way to change from OBD2 to OBD1 if I am not mistaken, but it would be very complicated and not really worth it. There are ews emulators, I have not used one yet so I have no idea if they actually work.
What about a DME from a 1994 instead or would the same problem arise? Is there any other way that i could do a bypass on it or does the DME have to be a 1996 one? Thanks!
TheEpicLazyMan The DME would have to be a 96, maybe newer, I have no idea if the OBD2 cars are all compatible like the OBD1 cars. Like I said, there are the EWS emulators. I can't find much info on them though, but they are pretty cheap on ebay. I'll go down that road soon myself.
To my understanding, it pretends to be the key in the ignition. That would effectively bypass the EWS. Again, you should do research outside of my post here on that, since I do not have one and do not know for certain. Contacting a seller of one might get you better answers than I can give you.
Help, I have a E36 98 M3 S52 OBD II EWS. Started out with hard to start, seems like battery ran out. But finally turned over and started. This happened couple times . Then suddenly No crank no start. Battery is fully charged. I thought it’s the EWS module so I recently ordered a new DME from kassel performance with EWS delete. I plugged it in and got no crank no start. I assume the EWS is damaged so I bridge the two big wires on the EWS and got it to crank, but no start. Then I try unplugging the EWS and bridge the two wires, but still crank only no start. I have replaced the crank sensor and a use starter. Checked all fuses under the hood and all is good. When I turn the key to on position, I can hear that fuel pump prime. Any advice is much appreciated.
Advice please. I replaced my BMW's water damaged computer box with a lock-set. The car starts very well. But the issue is that the steering wheel doesn't unlock and the radiator fan keeps on running without shutting off. What could be the problem?
Hi, i have a 96 328i and when i hit the clutch to shift, the motor is going automatically a few hundred rpm up, even without hitting the gas a bit . i know is probably normal but i dont like that... so if i do this bypass Is that going to settle my problem ? please help
I have a 320i m50b20 nonvanos, and my ews won`t let me start the car, does it have the same bypass wire that need to be cut or a different wire. And if it`s a different wire do you know wich one is that need to be cut? Thanks a lot and sorry for my bad english!
I found where I can buy a set with the ecu dme and key n switch .... but mine has the dme 1430 105 ... and the one i found is the 744 698 .. will it swap over
Thanks man! So i have a 98 318ti and im planning to do a swap from a 99 328i. If i cut the wires, I don't have to snatch the 328i's EWS II module right? I can just get an after market chip for the 328i ECM and my 318ti key and good to go right? Please help!
Hi ,saw your video and need your help , so the car was seating with out a battery , and now will not start a guy re programed a Key for me and it worked I removed battery because car need work and so now doesn't start how can I fix this issue
i have a 1994 325is auto, does this work?if i change my ecu without bypass and put a 1997 m3 manual ecu ,you think is gonna work? by the way i have a check engine and the mechanic said my ecu is the problem,pl help
Couldn’t thank you enough for this. I was about to give up on 95 M3 but this bypass started it right up. Thank you again

I'm not sure if I'll get a response or not because this has been a long time ago but do you think this will work on a 1997 BMW Z3 1.9? Thank you.
Can you please explain when you quoted removing the pin and dissassembling the plug, Mentioned in 8:13?
There is a special tool set online that easily slips into the pin connector which then dislodges it. I used an alligator clip from radio shack to dislodge the pin which is less expensive but takes a little longer to work the connector out. Thanks M.B.S

im planning on doing an m62 swap in my e30, the m62 being ews obviously. will this make my wiring job easier?

How do I bypass the chip key using this method I just want to make my car push button start I lost my key and I also have the spinning key problem
I wish you had uploaded this a year ago when I ended up buying a $700 DME with EWS bypassed. I have a E36 M44 motor in my E30.
Did BMW put two separate plugs in the DME compartment for easy install between automatic and manual transmissions?
Just replaced the ECU in my 91' BMW 525i, it was very easy 15 minute job and I'm not a car mechanic. Car runs great now.
Bought the ECU on ebay, used for $80. Also, replaced all the fuel injectors, one was bad.
Everything seems work great, even my door locks the center locking works better than before with newer ECU. Should I swap the chip?
Looks like, later models of BMW's got more complicated and more expensive too.
New cars are scary for weekend mechanics, too much electronics. LOL!
1947froggy, do you know what caused the no start, or did bridging the wires together fix it. Just curious...
Am tired of programming my BMW e36 318i with m43 engine of 1997 how can I remove chip and ews ii
great video clean and clear. do you have a bypass for the ews 3. do does it mess with the crank position sensors wave form.
Question. Did you ever open up an EWS II module?
I wonder if there is a relay inside the housing. My starter motor keeps switching off while starting.
I have a 1996 E36 323is
very good video my friend i have a quoestion where can i get the off or you sell it??
Is this the same solution for a bad immobilizer?
If I make this modification, can I run the stock EWS ecu with the EWS chip still installed?
I recently lost my only key to my car and i was wondering if this’ll work if i buy the turner ews delete chip and and new key?
have a 95' 325i need to replace dme can i use a stock dme pre 95' with no ews chip and stock chip in it and follow your video to bypass ews? this will be a maroon label 413.
If I do this would I still have to use the ring antenna? Or could I take that off?
So once i cut the green wire and have the DME out. Coulld i install the chip in the original DME or do i have to get another DME as well ?
can you tell me what is the benefit of doing that swap? what is the difference between the EWS II and the one In my 325? I just wanna get the idea of doing that swap. Thanks
The War Chip should work just fine even if you bypass the immobilizer, it would work the same way as if you did the bypass and decided to run the original silver label chip. Once you do the bypass the chip has no more control over the sitsuation. As for the E39 keep in mind that BMW changed from EWS II to EWS III somewhere around 3/97.... good luck with your project.....mybimmerspace
Haw did you read the ecu file
Can you help me with the device did you used it
The small green wire you cut runs from the ews to the dme?
So those computers will run a 97 318i with a m44 ?
I did a swap and changed the ECU, if I cut the cable can I make my car start?
Of will i have to visit the local BMW dealership?
would this be the same process on a 95' 318i? And if i got a 92-93 DME for the bypass would it also have to come from a 318 to work?
is there any posibillity that i can use my key without my chipset?i have a bmw e36 320i 1996 manual ,coupe .i lost my chip so the car just doese'nt want to turn, the lights are functioning, all the lights inside aswell, but the engine wotn turn, thanx in advance for any information that might help
What would happen if you don't remove the battery if removing ecu what code would you get
Great video thanks. Would this work with a 2002 bmw X5 ?
I have a 95 325i and I did the Ews delete with the wires under glove box and swapped a 413 maroon label dme into it and the car now cranks and I hear fuel pump. Car is not getting spark and has voltage to the coils themselves but no voltage when cranking. Is the car not getting signal when cranking?
Thanks for the video man, would the 413 DME also work for a 97 318i? or I'm better off buying a chip for my stock DME?
Thanks.
very nice , does this works in my 328i /97 ?
My dme has water damage, im about to purchase a replacement from a donor car, would it still run if i just swap the ews chip from the original dme ?
If you cut the "green" wire from the ews, can you still use the original DME ?
I meant to say "maybe only half the relay is working" in the last post. Also all this information applies to the 94-95 BMW model year.
So cut pin 66 the solid green wire and you can run without any key codes just as long as it turns
Hi I have a question I have a bmw 328i 97 my computer was broken so I buy a new one but but the car doesn't start its the same serial so my question is if I have to reprogram the inmovilizer and key for the new computer
Great video just on question
I have a BMW e36 1996 318i
Fried DME
So i have a spar one from a 1995 but what would i have to do to get it running?
Sorry be a stupid question but what does an EWS emulator do before i go and buy on?
Any advice is much appreciated.
thanks i have bmw 320i i wana replace ecu if i buy on ebay just exchange eprom chip for immo it will start thanks?
Advice please. I replaced my BMW's water damaged computer box with a lock-set. The car starts very well. But the issue is that the steering wheel doesn't unlock and the radiator fan keeps on running without shutting off. What could be the problem?
Thanks for your video. My car (BWM 2005 525i) won't crank today, is your method works for this model as well? Thanks again.
Hi, i have a 96 328i and when i hit the clutch to shift, the motor is going automatically a few hundred rpm up, even without hitting the gas a bit . i know is probably normal but i dont like that... so if i do this bypass Is that going to settle my problem ? please help
can i put my original ews chip in my replacement dme to have it start as well
I'm working on a 1995 318i and was wondering if the maroon dme will work for me
hello my I hope you can answer my question is possible to do this process on a 2003 BMW 745li thanks for your help really appreciated
I have a 96 bmw 328I can i use that bypass on my vehicle.Bmw E36 EWS II bypass computer swap.
