I love these ramblers! When I was a kid I was riding my bike on the side of the road and a sc snuck up behind me, slowed down, and then floored it! I almost fell off my bike I got so scared. He ripped through the gears and burned rubber all the way through. Man, one of my favorite memories as a kid on a bmx bike. This was 1995 or 1996 and I didn’t know about muscle cars yet. I was like “ what the hell was that thing???” Because of the far out paint and the mailbox scoop on the hood. After that I was hooked.
That is the same body as my brothers race car. Like I said before I always loved AMC for its muscle cars and non muscle cars. They were a rugged little car in any head to head of daily driving and their 6 cylinder was one of the smoothest running little engines I had the pleasure of servicing.
Nothing screams AMERICA like this red, white and blue beauty! These SC's were so cool and with the Hurst performance package and "the right amount of pedals" makes this the perfect AMC.....SWEET! GREAT VIDEO LOU.
Thanks to the owner and to Lou for this story. This is a perfect example of how "every" manufacturer had some great cars to offer to the public. Being mostly a GM guy and not close to any AMC dealerships growing up, it has been in only recent years that I realized how much AMC had to offer to a wide range of customers. I too at one time had the "RAMBLER" stigma. If I was a larger volume collector I would most likely have at least one AMC car in my collection ranging from a 65-66 Marlin to a 71-74 Javelin AMX (I even like the 3-tone 56 Nash Ambassador with the new AMC 327 motor). Also, nice to see a story in my state. For viewers who know little about AMC (or this car in particular) this had to be a very much appreciated and revealing story. Thanks again.
Hi Allen, Happy to read you enjoy this story :-) Glad to read this brings back memories of your Rambler, and hope your collections adds the right AMC car for you. My pleasure sharing this one with you, and you're welcome, Lou

Also, I remember it being SO LOUD. I got a book about muscle cars that year to start learning all about them and that’s where I learned these came with glass packs from the factory. Lol pretty damn cool.
A friend of mine had a 1969 Road Runner with a 383 V -8 ; Sometime back in the sixties , he challenged an AMX at a stop light and the AMX easily won ! Thanks 🙏 Lou & Dan for showing us , yet another great car !
Hi Dan, Happy to read this brings back memories. Did you see this video? (the video links to each car is in the description of the video if you'd like to see each car individually), Lou ua-cam.com/video/BmLkZ8VvcUo/v-deo.html
I like all the wild engine sounds when you take it out on the highway! The mailbox scoop was an "air bleed" design to pull in less turbulent air which was above the surface of the hood. When engineers started wind tunnel testing their cars they suggested changing the hood scoops for more efficiency.
AMC engines were SO VERY GOOD that Chrysler Corporation, which bought AMC in 1987, kept the AMC 360 v8 going till 1991 in the Grand Wagoneer and the AMC straight six till 2006 in the Jeep TJ & LJ Wrangler Unlimited...even the flush door handles too!
Gorgeous cars, both "A" and "B" scheme. Correct me if I'm wrong. Off the showroom floor, the S/C Rambler could do 14.3 in the quarter mile all day long in stock form. It had the best braking performance of any American car, the Porsche 911 was the only car that braked better. It outhandled most American cars due to the new ball joint design and it's low weight. I subscribed to Classic Sixties magazine when I was seventeen and this was in the first issue if I recall correctly. The magazine name was changed a year later. I still have every issue of Classic Sixties magazine in a sealed plastic bin. 😁
Hi Sean, From your comment you're on the right UA-cam Channel :-) Glad to read you have preserved the magazines. Not sure what the SC/Rambler could do in the 1/4 miles, however I know this one is FUN! Please Subscribe, and hit the "bell" so you can see all the cars when they are uploaded on this UA-cam Channel, Lou
Yes, they would do 14.3 @ 98 MPH right off the showroom floor. And yes the brakes were amazing for a car at that time. The new upper and lower ball joint came out in 1970, the rear after the SC/Rambler was sold but a mew amd tight trunion front end handled amazingly well also. This car is easily into the 12s as it was shown in this video in a large part as a result of the adjustable factory "torgue link" tractions bars that eliminated rear wheel hop and helped the tires to bite down hard on the pavement
Thanks!! A good friend WAS MECHANIC at AMC DEALER,,HE had a 70 AMX/390/4 speed/ lime Green/ for Drag racing.... we stored in for a year Plus , in 1974-75....Anyways , AMC GREAT STUFF, ACTUALLY, bought my first NEW CAR :1970 DODGEcar from DODGE/ AMC Dealer, SYRACUSE INDIANA( they had MACHINES / RWBLUE, Etc. On DISPLAY, AND OTHERS.
@@dancurtis3425 Seems like the trap speed is a bit slow for that much engine and being that light. My guess would be aerodynamics not so good? When they were turning in the 12's what kind of MPH were they getting?
@@zulumax1my 68 AMX with this same engine except for a single 750 on a Torker intake ran very low 13s @ 110MPH with terrible 60 ft times due to running street tires on very tall 3.15 gear ratio with G60 tires and only being able to do `1/3 throttle out of the hole until the tires gained traction. The SC/Ramblers came from the factory with 3.54 axle ratios and weighed in at 300-350 lbs less than my AMX so pound for pound it would be considerably faster. This SC/Rambler did high 12s, again with street tires, but the MPH did not change a whole lot due not being able to really get full throttle until it also gained traction.
@@georgepetrillo7316 Let's remember, this gentleman has souped up his engines, in both of those vehicles. From what I remember, the factory-delivered versions was just slightly slower than the very most quick muscle cars of that era..This gentleman has solved that problem...from around 315hp, to his over 400hp engines, make his cars stunningly fast.
An owner with superlative knowledge of rare cars and an interesting personal story to tell and driving confidence to match. Hats off from a snowy UK to you both in the desert for this episode.
As an amc guy once again I congradulate you for showing another AMC but as others have said an excellent video with the extended ride. Gotta love 4th gear rubber. Keep up the good work
In my opinion AMC doesn't get the recognition they deserve. SCRambler, THE MACHINE, AMX, Javelin were some of the coolest cars of the muscle car era. AMC made more out of nothing. Cool story about it kickin' butt from 72-74, big engine light car = hang on for your life. Thank you for sharing Lou.

The first SC/Rambler I (knowingly) remember seeing in person was an A/scheme car the summer after I graduated from high school. I had gone to a local mom and pop clothing store to pick up some nice new clothes for when I started college, and as I was coming out, I chanced to hear this intimidating rumble. Peered up the block a way, and lo and behold, there was a red white and blue boxy beast, flying the flag for AMC and heading right in my direction! It had Center Line wheels, big rubber out back, a modest roll cage and tow bars on the front bumper. I could barely believe my eyes and ears on that idyllic sunny afternoon. Subsequently I spotted the car a few more times at local cruise nights, and then a few years later a photo of it at a drag strip turned up in a book about muscle cars that I had bought. I knew it was the same car, from the way it was set up, its appearance and the license plates. Never came across it again--I wonder where it resides now.
Another great American Motors product! You can't have enough of these on your channel . I'm happy these cars are getting the much deserved recognition that is long overdue.
When you guys do the on ramp pull, your expressions look like you could be 17 years old! Totally reminds me of the reactions we all had as kids when we would get on it with a big displacement car back in high school. Great video - thanks!
Hi Roy, "your expressions look like you could be 17 years old!" Feels GOOD to be 17 again! You're right :-) Happy to share this video with you. You're welcome, Lou
Lou you are the number one in plastic cars you come across the nicest cars and you know the cars as well Jay Leno is nice to the Jay Leno garage but you're a little bit different more our old school type we appreciate you and all the work hard work that you to get these cars
Hi Elliott, Thank you for your kind words and encouragement. It is appreciated! :-) Now if I can just reach 20% of Jay Leno's Subscribers I could do this full time :-) Hopefully soon, Lou
All hail! Lou! This bad-boy is what made a lot of the big-3 guys jaws drop in the day... even now - 50 years later there are still "Rambler"-AMC hater/deniers... Couldn't help but laugh hysterically as the Rambler dash plate was in view while he was poking 4th gear rubber! Absolutely phenomenal vid and more phenomenal car Lou. And that dual quad cross-ram! How rare is that?? Get a ride and vid for that BEAST! Paleze! Long live AMC muscle! Been hooked since I was a kid.
Wow! Talk about the right car(s) being in the right hands. Dan definitely has this one all sorted out. I also liked the quick peek at its stable mates, too. There's a lot of horsepower in that garage. Thanks, Lou!

Love these cars! I remember riding my bike by the local car lots by my house in San Francisco around 1973 and seeing one for sale. I'll never forget it was $1,500. My brother had a '68 AMX 390 Go Pack car at this time, which I now own today.

Wow Lou - what a ride! I love those sc/ scramblers ! A friend of mine way back had one of these ,and we would cruise town in it. Was the one with the red stripe on the side. This guy sure knows his AMC cars, the way he explained all the details of this car was amazing ! I heard they could do 13.9's in the quarter back then... but I could be mistaken. Anyway, one of my favourite cars you have featured on your show - glad he wasn't afraid to grab some rubber on the road ! Thanks lou !
Hi Lou, A friend of mine owned one of these back in the early seventies, it was wild and crazy and an undefeated street racer. The last time I saw him, he stilled owned it and was in the midst of rebuilding it. These cars were light weight and had few creature comforts. You didn’t get a radio probably because the radios and speakers of the day couldn’t be heard above the engine. Thanks for sharing. 👍😉
These Ramblers are awesome. - A real streetfighter and perfect race car. - .. and so beautiful. - Thank you Lou for bringing us this important piece of car history. : )

As a kid, seeing either an A or B Scheme at the Auto Show or World of Wheels would be the equivalent of finding the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow - that's how rarely I saw them. And now, I've heard what one sounds like: Oh. My. God. You've read my comment about how I'd play the lottery in order to buy one of the multitudes of cars you've featured on your channel, Lou - so you already know what I'm doing this weekend. I wonder if Dan would build an AMX Pacer? :) Thanks, Lou!
Hi chemxfan, Hope all your numbers come in for you :-) Hmmm, not sure about the Pacer? My pleasure sharing this one with you. Lou P.S. Good news! In the next couple of months, you'll see the "B scheme" too :-)
Oh Lou outstanding video! I so remember these cars and I was just 11 years old when they produced these special Rambler Americans. I loved these colors of this special unit. I loved the indepth story on these as I learned more about these neat units. That power is unbelievable in this little car. That ride along had to be so much fun as I enjoyed it on the video here. I loved the owner and his knowledge and story about these units as he is quite a guy. Just a fun and knowledgeable video Lou as I enjoyed it so much. Thanks as always Lou for sharing with us!!
Very cool car. This was the car that made me fall in love with muscle cars. A guy use to drive one of these by my house on his way over to his girlfriend's house in about 1972. I was 10yrs old. Thanks for sharing such an in depth view of this rare car. Always thought AMC did a great job with the patriotic paint scheme! 👍
Hi DSRenfrew I, Ahhh your 1st love :-) Happy to read this car brings back memories of the car the Guy used to drive past your house :-) Thank you for viewing, sharing, and you're welcome, Lou
Oh wow, just gorgeous. We used to have a small restaurant next to my place of work (am retired now). The place was called Country Bob's. In years past Bob owned an SCRambler in the A scheme. I remember him saying how he wished he had kept it.
Hi, Lou! As I watched this episode, I had a thought. When Kenny Chesney said "I was going as fast as a Rambler goes, I could feel the speed from my head to my toes", could he have been talking about THIS one?! So I guess this is how forever feels! LOL! This may have been the Rambler's last year, but it sure went out with a bang! Thanks to you and Dan for taking us out scramblin'!
This AMC is the direct base of a car that is a true legend here in Argentina, the Torino (google "IKA Torino"). It had many styling improvements from Pininfarina that gave it a more european look, with a MUCH better interior, a better rear suspension, ZF gearbox and a very modern (for its time) 233 ci OHC six inline. It was produced for almost 15 years in two and four doors, and a used '77 coupe was my first car, that brings me very good memories. A wonderful car with great handling and performance, despite the "small" engine, that it's considered the best six cilinder car of his era. And about this pristine AMC, it's a small and light muscle car for USA standards, so I can imagine that with more than 300 hp, this thing can eat many "sacred cows" with way more power.

AWESOME CAR! I've always loved the A and B scheme though I lean toward the B. I've always agreed with the opinion that AMC never got the credit they deserved. They put out some GREAT muscle cars. Especially when the Group 19 parts were added. Enjoyed watching this episode.

Great video Lou! Had a street racer version of one of these in college. Previous owner had painted over it in primer red unfortunately, as he also had a super stock model that folks confused the two and wouldn't race him. Anyway, was my daily driver for a couple of years and was so much fun, especially blowing the doors off SS/454 Chevelle's, Z28 Camaros and 427 Mustangs.

You mentioned Thrush mufflers. My dad bought a 340 Dart new in '69. At some point in the mid-'70's, he bought some Thrush mufflers to put on his car. Sounded great! They came with the bird head decals that he put on the little vent windows.
During the 70s and early 80s I think, "noise pollution" was a thing. As a young kid I thought it was stupid of course, but now it's so obvious nobody pays attention to it anymore. I digress, the car is beautiful! I remember trying to get my dad to buy a Rebel Machine, unsuccessfully of course, back in the day. But yeah, I remember all of these cars. Interesting thing, I don't think Lou is going to mention it at almost 15:00, but on the SC/Ramblers, the front and rear bumpers are the same thing! AMC did that as a money saving trick and it worked. If I had the space I'd probably get one an AMX or Javelin. Love them all though 😊
Hurst connection is cool, almost like a factory hot rod, looks like it would be fun to drive, plain interior, just the basics for speed!love the shifter looks like you could really slam it, funny cartoonish decals!
Sweet Lou these little classics can be Beach course we put aluminum heads on them the right carburation open up the breathers pack of steel crank dome the Pistons and they'll launch like you wouldn't believe but the first thing I would do with that one is launch those hideous wheels right off that rig that is ridiculous unless you're going to the circus and I'm so glad I could make some great Viking comments as sweet Lou post another American classic 🤭😎✌️👊💓😁💪🤗
Hi Swede Noble, "he first thing I would do with that one is launch those hideous wheels right off that rig that is ridiculous unless you're going to the circus" Sounds FUN! Lou
Over my dead body. Those hideous wheels are factory original trim ring magnum 500s ion the original factory paint color and they will remain on the car until the day I die
My friend's aunt had one of these new in 1969. We used to go in it to pick up fresh eggs in it. She traded it in for an American station wagon because the SCRambler wasn't practical in Wisconsin winters.

SWEET ! I have been In Love with the SC/Rambler since I was a teen . I saw my first one in a issue of Muscle Car Review back in the 80s. It just blew me away. Please do a video on the Rambler Rouge if you ever run across one, they are another favorite of mine,
Hi troynov1965, Happy to read this one is one you're in love with :-) If I see a Rambler Rouge with a Care Taker willing to share, you'll see one too, Lou
AMC made awesome unique muscle cars. By far some of the lightest and sporty and the small block and big block cars. The Rebel Sprint, AMX Javelin, and bad to the bone Hearst Scrambler.. Jeep and Eagle probably would of saved AMC eventually if they could of held on but who knows lol
Hi Lou… Again I’m at work. I have to put this one aside again… Yet I am going to take a peek before I get back to work… You can guarantee I am coming back and revisiting… I will let the commercials play on… I won’t watch them… They won’t never know. This car looks very very cool. I am not familiar with too many AMC‘s, my friend had a 64 AMC With pushbutton park reverse drive… It was pretty cool and beautiful… That was the only AMC of my past. I thought it was a javelin. Thumbs up now… Littering comments with thumbs up… Watching later… Littering thumbs up comments later… See you soon and see you on your next one… I can’t wait
Hi Jonnie, Thank you for the "thumb up" and the commercial watch too. I understand business before pleasure. When you're ready, this video will be waiting for you to enjoy, Lou
Love these cars. Oh to have been around in their hay day. The special order or special build cars are so cool and interesting to me. I have to say this one is quite a bit different than my friends pearl purple 64 Rambler thats on a tube chassis with a small block chevy and 6-71 blower with two Demon carbs on it. :) Tubbed in back and littles in the front. ;) This one here is a different cool that you just can't match. Thank you for sharing this one with us.

Hi slant6guy, Thanks for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou
Finest example of AMC muscle right here. Love this car what a gem. Thank guys.
Hi Bruce H., High praise for this AMC muscle :-) You're welcome, Lou
Never seen that car: truly impressive in performance! Not really aerodynamic, however it is compensate by a huge power. Must be fun to drive!
Hi Marco, Happy to share this one with you :-) You're right, a FUN to drive car for sure, Lou
@Unendurable Intensity : "Eurio"...?
@Unendurable Intensity no problem ! only a mistake...
Wow, gone in 30 seconds! Could be the fastest production car of it's time in the U.S. 5 star episode Lou! 👍
Hi David, High praise for this episode :-) Thank you! Lou
They were low 14 second cars in the quarter mile. Vary respectable compared to the other musclecars of that year.

Keep up the good work
Hi Stephen, Happy to share a FUN AMC like this one :-) Thanks you for the kind words and encouragement, Lou

HI AMCmachine, Happy to read this car brings back memories :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou

Hi iswc27, Happy to share this fun episode with you :-) Glad you're along for the ride, Lou
Hi Fabio, Thank you for viewing and sharing your thoughts. Hope you see many more cars on this UA-cam Channel you enjoy. Lou
