I bought one brand new and just sold it 5 years ago. Bracket raced it for many years. A few minor mods it turned a best of 13.19 at 104 mph. Only the go pac versions had the hood scoop.
All had it. Go Pac made it functional. Also with GO Pac was the four barrel carb. D 70 14 white letter tires on sport wheels. Four speed or automatic. Standard was a three speed manual. two barrel was rated at 245 horsepower, four barrel was 285.

AMC was always the Rodney Dangerfield of car companies. A shame too because the cars were fairly well made, reliable, and pretty thrifty for their day. This SC360 is the perfect getaway car. The styling is generic. What makes this car so awesome is the 360 under the hood. Fun fact: the front and rear bumpers are interchangeable. Jay, keep up with the great videos. Always had a soft spot for AMC stuff. My high school auto shop teacher {and his son} were AMC folks. His son had a 304 cubed Gremlin that received a rebuilt 390 that could get the front tires up in the air from a stop on acceleration. Always wanted a SC Scambler (there's 2 of them locally). They were 13 second 1/4 mile cars from the dealer. It's hard enough to find a 2 door Hornet and harder to find a SC Hornet. Thanks for showing!
Thanks for watching this I didn’t know how special the car was there’s cars that I’m finding for the first time and this is one of them I was amazed at the ads I was able to dig up =) it blows my mind to think that this was a super affordable car that would put down just about anything and yet it kind of sort of failed
They needed some fine tuning and a damn good driver to get in the 13 second bracket. They were designed to run in F stock class. AMC advertised them as a Rambler that does the quarter in 14.3. Period road test at best got them stock at 14.1.
Thanks Jay for doing my request, I'll be 66 next month and I've only seen one of these other than Pictures of them, highly underrated muscle car. That must have the 2 barrel 360 V8, also must be a survivor car, not detailed or restored.
Oh yes...the front suspension of these cars is like the Ford IFS suspension and the rear shocks are staggered in the back...one shock on one side of the differential is on the opposite side on the other side...if you know what I mean. the handling is awesome and I imagine the 360 is quite powerful. I can crank my Gremlin wheel hard over while driving and the body doesn't lean like in my 1972 Oldsmobile. Also the steering column is from a Chevy. A Camaro wheel will bolt on without a problem. Someone did that in my 1977 Gremlin before I bought it. I mentioned the car in the Packard video, by the way,.
1970 was the first year that AMC front suspension was like Ford. Before that they had a high mount front spring like Ford but no upper ball joint. Instead, they used something known as a trunnion. on top and a lower ball joint. But because this type of front suspension had no anti dive geometry necessary for road racing, they switched to a front suspension like Ford having both upper and lower ball joints. Many sad it finally brought AMC into the modern era. This was requested by Roger Penske owner of their Trans Am Road racing team where they raced AMC Javelins.
I love these Hornets! I couldn’t wait for you to get in the back seat. They were tight. One of my friends’ moms had a Gremlin (same platform, shorter wheelbase) back in the 70s. As an adolescent, I had to squeeze in that back seat and found it really claustrophobic. Happy New Year Jay!
@@What.its.like. Yeah … AMC is largely forgotten and overlooked. My neighborhood was down the street from an AMC dealership in the 60s, 70s and 80s, so I remember them to the extreme.
I owned a 1975 Hornet although it was a six it was a very good car. But I am here to tell you about my 1967 Rambler American. It had a six in it when my friend and I went to a local salvage yard to get a electric wiper motor to replace the vacuum wiper motor. I found a wiper motor and switch for it, and as we were leaving a tow truck pulled in with a 1968 AMC Javelin. It had been hit hard on the passenger side and totaled. After some haggling, I bought the entire driveline. 343 V8 four speed and a 3.54 rear axle. as well as the front springs motor mounts. We took the car and the driveline parts and since the American and the Javelin shared the same chassis it was a drop in. Man it ran so good and while I lost some races I won quite a few. Forgot to mention that the first time I did a burnout I almost lost control because it suffered from rear axle hop which required me to install traction bars. Miss it so much but being a young father by surprise forced me to sell it.

Great video! I've seen a very few Hornet SC/360s at shows and drag strips over the years. Possibly a "clone" or two. Not to nitpick but pretty sure the Hornet 🐝name was also utilized on the final three model years of the Hudson brand, now under the umbrella of American Motors Corp., namely 1955-1957.
Wow, it's been so long since seeing one that I had forgotten these existed. What a great find. Thanks for sharing. I know when the SC was on the Rambler, we all called it the SCRambler. Kinda doesn't fit with Hornet though. I know it is a sedan but I think they can get away with calling it a Super Coupe, as it was super. Wish we knew what they were thinking when they named it the SC 360 or for that matter when it was on the Rambler.
The rambler was also called the scrambler I think if amc had the publicity that Chevy had they may still be around they had great ideas just didn’t have the press
The seats which could recline to what had been referred to as a double bed, was commonly called Nash seats by many people. They were around for many, many years. I wouldn't call these bucket seats like you'd find in a Javelin/AMX or other cars with a console, but maybe call this a split bench. If this car had an automatic trans, it would have been a power-robbing Borg-Warner. In 1972, AMC switched to the Chrysler Torqueflite. With the Torqueflite, this car would have been a rocket ship! Could you imagine this car with the 401 V8? This final generation of AMC V8's all had the same external dimensions, so they could be swapped and interchanged without too much trouble.
@@What.its.like. Yep. That's one of the things that makes a Rambler a Rambler. Back in the 70's and 80's, if you went to an AMC dealership and called the cars Nash, they would come unglued.
I never knew that it was a special as it was that is definitely one of those cars that could fly under the radar.. I think those cards will be worth something one day they’re starting to come up in value because of supply and demand and supply was originally really low I have no idea how many of those cars survived but probably not that many

It is so interesting owning 2 AMC Gremlins and seeing these other same era AMC cars and seeing the same dash and such like in my Gremlin. Same dash, same door panels etc. Just the back end behind the doors change.
Best car I ever owned was a 1975 AMC Hornet Sportabout wagon w/ 258 inline-6 and the (Chrysler) torque command (904) automatic. Super reliable car. Got it from my Dad....who bought it from my Uncle. Really miss that car.
@@What.its.like. My favorite memory of that wagon was the torque of the 258 inline 6, the cold AC it had, and it's ability never to get stuck, even though it was just 2 wheel drive (it was not an Eagle, which was produced years later). Long trips with the car were trouble free.

Kind of nit picking but, it’s “Dana Spicer” not “Splicer”. The 1969 AMC Rambler Scrambler was another extremely underrated muscle car. It could probably beat many more popular cars of the time. Too bad they painted red/white/blue, like the Pro Stock cars, rather than red or white or blue with red/white/blue pinstriping. The Gremlin X with the 304 and 4 speed was a little rocket 🚀 also.

@@What.its.like. , A preview of the next or future episodes is a good idea. I’m not so interested in a Hupmobile, but I think some of your subscribers will be. Pursue what interests you. Your enthusiasm is a big part of your videos and I think that connects with other young people. I’m sure there are many people of various ages that aren’t aware that some car companies ever existed or that some companies were successful for several decades. Someone now might look back at a Ford Falcon, Maverick, Pinto Chevy Vega, Malibu or Impala and not realize they sold in huge numbers. More than cars that are still famous.
Two paint schemes available. Type A, had the large red section on the sides and those graphics on the hood. that said 390 cu. in. and the word air on the hood scoop and type B paint scheme was mostly all white with a small red and a small blue stripe low down the side of the car, and no words on the hood.
the door handles are Kelvanator refrigerator handles. Yes, top of door is metal. Some of the AMc's had that package shelf above the floor pedals, some do not. The fuse box is in line with the parking break release handle and that handle is held on with a plastic clip. My clip broke one time when I went and pulled it and the metal rod from the brake release went right across about 4 fuses and blew them all out. Also, the fresh air duct is right behind the glove box. The bottom is held on by a rod. One day that popped out on me, the "pan" fell straight down and then a ton of cold air came in the car that I couldn't shut off. AMC's are fun!
@@What.its.like. I have quite a few repairs to do on my Gremlin if I want to get it back on the road. As far as body panels, AMC was short on tooling money, so Dick Teague designed a lot of interchangeable parts to save money. The "Hornet" style car design lasted from 1970-1986 and really only had minor sheet metal updates in all that time.
There is a 68 comet coming but it probably won’t be until next week sometime Tomorrow it’s a 1929 Hupmoblie I think then 36 Cadillac and then we’re gonna head to 40s car 50s car and then it will be the 68 comet Mercury‘s are getting really hard to find for some reason I want to do Mercury’s and Linkins especially the Lincoln zephyr from the 40s that things freaking gorgeous
My SC360 was burnished brown with black interior . 650 Holley 3barrel , Hooker headers going through glasspacks sounded great but no back pressure. Flames were visible under car at times but caused exhaust valves to warp within 10k miles. Changed 71 cam with 72 degrees overlap to 72 cam with 42 degrees. Solved valve problems . T15 3 speed tranny and 3.15 rear gave 65mph 1st gear with 6500rpm. Yes it screamed and 90 mph 2nd . Not often but several times with friends for witnesses. Car was a sleeper but nose heavy on acceleration. Drove it until 160k miles in 1983. Paid like $3600 new. Should have kept it no matter what.
I had a Hornet station wagon with a 318 back in the day. I hauled a homebuilt trailer packed with all f my belongings from Florida to Ohio with it and drove it for another 3 years before I traded it for a '71 dodge sportsman van that I lived in for a couple of years
One thing about AMC 70's cars. Notice how thin the doors are compared to G.M. and Ford of the same period. You could get three rear ends across in the front seat and be more comfortable than in a Maverick or Nova. I'm the one that spotted it next to the Packard. Pretty good video. Keep it going. 😊
The biggest issue with Amc is they made a good product but they had no idea how to sell it and when they tried to sell it they sold it in the wrong way.. and then they kept making bigger mistakes like retooling the Marlin for one year and spending a fortune on it.. Ever since finding that out that has always been in the back of my mind why did they not sell that car for more than one year it just didn’t make sense
@@What.its.like. The issue with the Eagle was that it was obviously derived from a Hornet, and obviously the styling was an already ten year old car, and that car was an inexpensive car. The Eagle was an expensive car. Very difficult to move a car that looks like a ten year old inexpensive car up market. Had they the money for a body restyle, it may have done much better. The redesigned Jeep Cherokee that came out a couple of years later was a great success for the company. That shows they were on the right track with smaller FWD vehicles. The 67 Marlin restyle was a management mistake, but most of that car was an Ambassador, so it wasn't too bad. The leader of AMC at the time, Roy Abernathy got put out to pasture after it came out though, so it must've hurt. The 74 Matador and 75 Pacer together with partnering with Renault probably put the final nail in the coffin of AMC. They never really recovered from the mid to late seventies sales decline, and French cars have never sold well in the U.S. They still don't today. Too bad. The Pacer and Matador were interesting cars. I still own a 75 Matador.

In 77 I had a 70 sc 360 go orange package hornet. It had 4speed and. 410 twin grip rear. Jr. In high school. Polyglass bias ply wide ovals duels w/ thrush glass packs. Stop light to stop light. Nothing could touch it.
No such thing. SC 360 was a 1971 year only car. In 1970 a 360 two barrel engine was available in the hornet but only with an automatic transmission. No four barrel or four speed from the factory. My uncles for many years owned a first Rambler dealership as they were known even though it was officially known as American Motors for years until1966 when they for the first time called the Ambassador an AMC in hopes of taking away the old man image from that model and selling to younger customers. So starting in 1967 they used the name AMC on all of their cars except the American. But for years AMC cars were sold with the Rambler name on them. But my uncles sold Ramblers, later AMC cars for years. Grew up around them. so I know what I am talking about. Rambler name was last used on their American series in 1969. Then For 1970 when they introduced the Hornet to replace the American series which was the car the Hurst SC Rambler was based on.
@scrambler69-xk3kv it may have been a 71, but every other detail is accurate. I was 16 in 77. I took the factory clutch out when we got it used in 76. And replaced it with zoom complete set clutch. It was a big orange go pack complete with ram air scoop. I have my DMV records to prove it plus a lot of tickets as well. Tell that to your uncle Google .
I've always these were cool and interesting and in some way tough looking little cars! It's a nice simple design but a lot of little touches like the stripes and the rally wheels add a lot to it I think. I always thought the look of the sport about wagon was pretty cool too! I'm not sure what the SC stands for super charged??
Hi Justin, nice video! The AMC Hornet SC/360 is a very rare and sought after High Performance Automobile. Unfortunately the car is not equipped with the "GO-Pack". I would venture to say that most Hornet SC/360(s) were not equipped with the "GO-Pack" due to stupid high insurance rates and AMC dealers did not want to keep a vehicle in their new car inventory that they had to pay bank interest rates on. You see, all new car dealership(s) the dealer(s) does not own the cars, the bank owns them. The dealer(s) must pay bank interest rates each day the cars sit on their lot. Most car dealerships that go out of business, it's because the dealer can no longer support the interest rates on their cars, and the bank comes to pick up their "new car inventory". I think this one of the issues that ended the "Performance Era". If you noticed I used the term "High Performance Automobile" Vs. "Muscle Car" because I think "Muscle Car" is a figure of speech. I think that SC stands for Street-Competition, but I could be incorrect. Please reply. Dave...
I never even knew this car existed until somebody in the comment section asked me to do this car. It’s very plain Jane car doesn’t look like anything special. Just like you mentioned I am fairly certain that most of these cars never got to go package. I wish these cars got the coverage they deserve back in the day it probably would have been better for AMC. These cars just never got the coverage.
i should mention that all the front panels can be switched between cars. I'd like to put a 1986 AMC Eagle front end on a Gremlin to see how it looks. I'd also love to try the 1973 hornet front end on a Gremlin to see what that would look like.

Poor AMC they're the Rodney Dangerfield of high performance automobiles. They don't get no respect! I owned a 72 Matador for a bit. The rear seal was bad and leaked like a sieve. Other than that it purred like a kitten.
@What.its.like. it's got something to do with CAFE standards as to why they just won't sell here. They COULD....but.... because it's so tough to meet these standards with their formula, you're right in saying it won't happen in North America. Kinda makes me think the BIG 3 lobbied for this, only to shoot themselves in the foot, not being able to do it themselves now. The HVAC industry faced a similar mishap at turn of the century. Carrier and Goodman went to the DOE to raise minimum SEER ratings from 10 to 13 . Goodman - all for it because they knew they could build cheaper than almost everyone, and Carrier, because it.was going to force higher standards upon "the cheap builders " . When the 2 determined that this jump by 2003-4-5 was going to cause some cost increases for sales of units, installation space, logistics, etc., they wanted to back the minimum SEER back to 12.... DOE said nope, cannot go backwards, and there ya have, same with cars....
In Australia they were sold as a Rambler Hornet. AMC cars that were sold in Australia, Hornet, Javelin, Matador, Ambassador, AMX and Rebel were sold under the Rambler name but they were not a popular brand here. I heard somewhere a long time ago that the SC360 was proposed to be a Super Charged engine to compete with the larger CI engines of other manufacturers, It was slotted to go into the AMX for racing/Drag racing purposes, how true that is I can't say because the engine never got a Super charger.

The company that re assembled and converted the Ramblers to right hand drive was Australian Motor Industries based in Port Melbourne Victoria. They weren't really a car company as such, more of an importer, assembler and distributor. Super sleeper this was a car I had no idea what it was somebody requested it during the Packard video saw it in the background next to the car and I was going back there so I made it a point to do that car what an epic trade super rare car I have no idea why they didn’t sell that many I guess the same reason that I didn’t know what it was people just didn’t get it.. on paper that car is a force to be reckoned with =)

Nice original car, I grew up in the fifties and sixties. People have to realize these were considered a smaller car with limited rear seating. Same wheelbase as a corvair, camaro , mustang, cuda ect ! Not really a family car unless you had younger kids so ya no backseat room. Amc’s never got a lot of respect out on the west coast as a performance car and AMC never pushed advertising them. AMC’s were built well but they were Grandpa or Grandma’s cars
My cars were always sleepers, but I’m sorry , that’s not what I would call a sleeper ! Just because they were not common don’t make them sleeper . not with badges or as we said in the day Call outs “ on hood or fender , any car guy would know what he was up against. You have to talk softly but you have the bigger stick that’s the ingredients for a sleeper
One day I’m going to do a nostalgic episode with my favorite car that I’ve ever owned but I don’t own one at the moment. 1988 Lincoln town car signature series that car is a sleeper it would do 0 to 60 in eight seconds which doesn’t sound fast but it only had 160 hp and it was a boat
Ahhh yes, the full size Gremlin. 🤣 Frankly I love the look of the Gremlin. I think from the back of the doors (coupe) to the front grill looks awesome. The chopped off butt makes it look better. Now if they wouldn't have left off the pesky rear hatch.🤔😂
I think you might have a clone there. I have never seen a Hornet SC/360 without a hood scoop, even the 2bbl models. And unless I'm mistaken, (and I might be) they either came with a 4-speed or automatic, never seen one with a 3-speed stick. Maybe some AMC guys out there might know better.

I might be able to shed some light on the 2 barrel vs the 4 barrel version of the SC 360 Hornet. What I believe is shown here is the base SC 360 with 2 barrel. One had a choice of 3 speed manual on the floor, or the automatic on the column. The rear gear slection was limited to either 3.15 standard, or 3.54 optional open rear end. If one optioned the SC 360 with the Go Pack, you then got the 4 barrel with the 285 horse engine, the ram air hood along with a Tach, dual exhaust. The choice of a 3 speed manual on the floor, the 4 speed manual or the automatic on the column. Rear gear choice went up to 3.91 with twin grip as as standard with the 3.91 rear. Too many other options to list here.

They needed some fine tuning and a damn good driver to get in the 13 second bracket. They were designed to run in F stock class. AMC advertised them as a Rambler that does the quarter in 14.3. Period road test at best got them stock at 14.1.
Thanks Jay for doing my request, I'll be 66 next month and I've only seen one of these other than Pictures of them, highly underrated muscle car. That must have the 2 barrel 360 V8, also must be a survivor car, not detailed or restored.

Oh yes...the front suspension of these cars is like the Ford IFS suspension and the rear shocks are staggered in the back...one shock on one side of the differential is on the opposite side on the other side...if you know what I mean. the handling is awesome and I imagine the 360 is quite powerful. I can crank my Gremlin wheel hard over while driving and the body doesn't lean like in my 1972 Oldsmobile.
Also the steering column is from a Chevy. A Camaro wheel will bolt on without a problem. Someone did that in my 1977 Gremlin before I bought it.

1970 was the first year that AMC front suspension was like Ford. Before that they had a high mount front spring like Ford but no upper ball joint. Instead, they used something known as a trunnion. on top and a lower ball joint. But because this type of front suspension had no anti dive geometry necessary for road racing, they switched to a front suspension like Ford having both upper and lower ball joints. Many sad it finally brought AMC into the modern era. This was requested by Roger Penske owner of their Trans Am Road racing team where they raced AMC Javelins.

I love these Hornets! I couldn’t wait for you to get in the back seat. They were tight. One of my friends’ moms had a Gremlin (same platform, shorter wheelbase) back in the 70s. As an adolescent, I had to squeeze in that back seat and found it really claustrophobic. Happy New Year Jay!

I owned a 1975 Hornet although it was a six it was a very good car. But I am here to tell you about my 1967 Rambler American. It had a six in it when my friend and I went to a local salvage yard to get a electric wiper motor to replace the vacuum wiper motor. I found a wiper motor and switch for it, and as we were leaving a tow truck pulled in with a 1968 AMC Javelin. It had been hit hard on the passenger side and totaled. After some haggling, I bought the entire driveline. 343 V8 four speed and a 3.54 rear axle. as well as the front springs motor mounts. We took the car and the driveline parts and since the American and the Javelin shared the same chassis it was a drop in. Man it ran so good and while I lost some races I won quite a few. Forgot to mention that the first time I did a burnout I almost lost control because it suffered from rear axle hop which required me to install traction bars. Miss it so much but being a young father by surprise forced me to sell it.

Great video! I've seen a very few Hornet SC/360s at shows and drag strips over the years. Possibly a "clone" or two. Not to nitpick but pretty sure the Hornet 🐝name was also utilized on the final three model years of the Hudson brand, now under the umbrella of American Motors Corp., namely 1955-1957.

Wow, it's been so long since seeing one that I had forgotten these existed. What a great find. Thanks for sharing. I know when the SC was on the Rambler, we all called it the SCRambler. Kinda doesn't fit with Hornet though. I know it is a sedan but I think they can get away with calling it a Super Coupe, as it was super. Wish we knew what they were thinking when they named it the SC 360 or for that matter when it was on the Rambler.
The rambler was also called the scrambler I think if amc had the publicity that Chevy had they may still be around they had great ideas just didn’t have the press
The seats which could recline to what had been referred to as a double bed, was commonly called Nash seats by many people. They were around for many, many years. I wouldn't call these bucket seats like you'd find in a Javelin/AMX or other cars with a console, but maybe call this a split bench. If this car had an automatic trans, it would have been a power-robbing Borg-Warner. In 1972, AMC switched to the Chrysler Torqueflite. With the Torqueflite, this car would have been a rocket ship! Could you imagine this car with the 401 V8? This final generation of AMC V8's all had the same external dimensions, so they could be swapped and interchanged without too much trouble.
The AMX had them and they reclined the whole entire way which blew my mind because I wasn’t sure that feature made it to 1969/70..
@@What.its.like. Yep. That's one of the things that makes a Rambler a Rambler. Back in the 70's and 80's, if you went to an AMC dealership and called the cars Nash, they would come unglued.

It is so interesting owning 2 AMC Gremlins and seeing these other same era AMC cars and seeing the same dash and such like in my Gremlin. Same dash, same door panels etc. Just the back end behind the doors change.

Best car I ever owned was a 1975 AMC Hornet Sportabout wagon w/ 258 inline-6 and the (Chrysler) torque command (904) automatic. Super reliable car. Got it from my Dad....who bought it from my Uncle. Really miss that car.

@@What.its.like. My favorite memory of that wagon was the torque of the 258 inline 6, the cold AC it had, and it's ability never to get stuck, even though it was just 2 wheel drive (it was not an Eagle, which was produced years later).

Kind of nit picking but, it’s “Dana Spicer” not “Splicer”. The 1969 AMC Rambler Scrambler was another extremely underrated muscle car. It could probably beat many more popular cars of the time. Too bad they painted red/white/blue, like the Pro Stock cars, rather than red or white or blue with red/white/blue pinstriping. The Gremlin X with the 304 and 4 speed was a little rocket 🚀 also.

Your enthusiasm is a big part of your videos and I think that connects with other young people. I’m sure there are many people of various ages that aren’t aware that some car companies ever existed or that some companies were successful for several decades. Someone now might look back at a Ford Falcon, Maverick, Pinto Chevy Vega, Malibu or Impala and not realize they sold in huge numbers. More than cars that are still famous.
Two paint schemes available. Type A, had the large red section on the sides and those graphics on the hood. that said 390 cu. in. and the word air on the hood scoop and type B paint scheme was mostly all white with a small red and a small blue stripe low down the side of the car, and no words on the hood.
My first car was a 73 Hornet X hatchback. 360, Torqueflite, 2.73 posi in a 9" Ford rear, manual disc brakes and steering.

the door handles are Kelvanator refrigerator handles.
Yes, top of door is metal.
Some of the AMc's had that package shelf above the floor pedals, some do not.
The fuse box is in line with the parking break release handle and that handle is held on with a plastic clip.
My clip broke one time when I went and pulled it and the metal rod from the brake release went right across about 4 fuses and blew them all out.
Also, the fresh air duct is right behind the glove box. The bottom is held on by a rod. One day that popped out on me, the "pan" fell straight down and then a ton of cold air came in the car that I couldn't shut off.

As far as body panels, AMC was short on tooling money, so Dick Teague designed a lot of interchangeable parts to save money.
The "Hornet" style car design lasted from 1970-1986 and really only had minor sheet metal updates in all that time.
Still would like to see more Mercury, 49 or anything in the 50s 60s. Great work your doing . 👍

My SC360 was burnished brown with black interior . 650 Holley 3barrel , Hooker headers going through glasspacks sounded great but no back pressure. Flames were visible under car at times but caused exhaust valves to warp within 10k miles. Changed 71 cam with 72 degrees overlap to 72 cam with 42 degrees. Solved valve problems . T15 3 speed tranny and 3.15 rear gave 65mph 1st gear with 6500rpm. Yes it screamed and 90 mph 2nd . Not often but several times with friends for witnesses. Car was a sleeper but nose heavy on acceleration. Drove it until 160k miles in 1983. Paid like $3600 new. Should have kept it no matter what.

I had a Hornet station wagon with a 318 back in the day. I hauled a homebuilt trailer packed with all f my belongings from Florida to Ohio with it and drove it for another 3 years before I traded it for a '71 dodge sportsman van that I lived in for a couple of years

Notice how thin the doors are compared to G.M. and Ford of the same period.
You could get three rear ends across in the front seat and be more comfortable than in a Maverick or Nova.

The biggest issue with Amc is they made a good product but they had no idea how to sell it and when they tried to sell it they sold it in the wrong way.. and then they kept making bigger mistakes like retooling the Marlin for one year and spending a fortune on it.. Ever since finding that out that has always been in the back of my mind why did they not sell that car for more than one year it just didn’t make sense
@@What.its.like. The issue with the Eagle was that it was obviously derived from a Hornet, and obviously the styling was an already ten year old car, and that car was an inexpensive car.
The Eagle was an expensive car.
Very difficult to move a car that looks like a ten year old inexpensive car up market.
Had they the money for a body restyle, it may have done much better.
The redesigned Jeep Cherokee that came out a couple of years later was a great success for the company. That shows they were on the right track with smaller FWD vehicles.
The 67 Marlin restyle was a management mistake, but most of that car was an Ambassador, so it wasn't too bad.
The leader of AMC at the time, Roy Abernathy got put out to pasture after it came out though, so it must've hurt.
The 74 Matador and 75 Pacer together with partnering with Renault probably put the final nail in the coffin of AMC.
They never really recovered from the mid to late seventies sales decline, and French cars have never sold well in the U.S.
They still don't today.

In 77 I had a 70 sc 360 go orange package hornet. It had 4speed and. 410 twin grip rear. Jr. In high school. Polyglass bias ply wide ovals duels w/ thrush glass packs. Stop light to stop light. Nothing could touch it.

No such thing. SC 360 was a 1971 year only car. In 1970 a 360 two barrel engine was available in the hornet but only with an automatic transmission. No four barrel or four speed from the factory. My uncles for many years owned a first Rambler dealership as they were known even though it was officially known as American Motors for years until1966 when they for the first time called the Ambassador an AMC in hopes of taking away the old man image from that model and selling to younger customers. So starting in 1967 they used the name AMC on all of their cars except the American. But for years AMC cars were sold with the Rambler name on them. But my uncles sold Ramblers, later AMC cars for years. Grew up around them. so I know what I am talking about. Rambler name was last used on their American series in 1969. Then For 1970 when they introduced the Hornet to replace the American series which was the car the Hurst SC Rambler was based on.
@scrambler69-xk3kv it may have been a 71, but every other detail is accurate. I was 16 in 77. I took the factory clutch out when we got it used in 76. And replaced it with zoom complete set clutch. It was a big orange go pack complete with ram air scoop. I have my DMV records to prove it plus a lot of tickets as well. Tell that to your uncle Google .
I've always these were cool and interesting and in some way tough looking little cars! It's a nice simple design but a lot of little touches like the stripes and the rally wheels add a lot to it I think. I always thought the look of the sport about wagon was pretty cool too! I'm not sure what the SC stands for super charged??

Hi Justin, nice video! The AMC Hornet SC/360 is a very rare and sought after High Performance Automobile. Unfortunately the car is not equipped with the "GO-Pack". I would venture to say that most Hornet SC/360(s) were not equipped with the "GO-Pack" due to stupid high insurance rates and AMC dealers did not want to keep a vehicle in their new car inventory that they had to pay bank interest rates on. You see, all new car dealership(s) the dealer(s) does not own the cars, the bank owns them. The dealer(s) must pay bank interest rates each day the cars sit on their lot. Most car dealerships that go out of business, it's because the dealer can no longer support the interest rates on their cars, and the bank comes to pick up their "new car inventory". I think this one of the issues that ended the "Performance Era". If you noticed I used the term "High Performance Automobile" Vs. "Muscle Car" because I think "Muscle Car" is a figure of speech. I think that SC stands for Street-Competition, but I could be incorrect. Please reply. Dave...
I never even knew this car existed until somebody in the comment section asked me to do this car. It’s very plain Jane car doesn’t look like anything special. Just like you mentioned I am fairly certain that most of these cars never got to go package. I wish these cars got the coverage they deserve back in the day it probably would have been better for AMC. These cars just never got the coverage.

I owned a 72 Matador for a bit. The rear seal was bad and leaked like a sieve. Other than that it purred like a kitten.

@What.its.like. it's got something to do with CAFE standards as to why they just won't sell here. They COULD....but.... because it's so tough to meet these standards with their formula, you're right in saying it won't happen in North America. Kinda makes me think the BIG 3 lobbied for this, only to shoot themselves in the foot, not being able to do it themselves now.
The HVAC industry faced a similar mishap at turn of the century. Carrier and Goodman went to the DOE to raise minimum SEER ratings from 10 to 13 . Goodman - all for it because they knew they could build cheaper than almost everyone, and Carrier, because it.was going to force higher standards upon "the cheap builders " . When the 2 determined that this jump by 2003-4-5 was going to cause some cost increases for sales of units, installation space, logistics, etc., they wanted to back the minimum SEER back to 12.... DOE said nope, cannot go backwards, and there ya have, same with cars....
Did they not change the name of the Hornet to AMC Eagle when it became all wheel drive in the 1980s?

The Hornet became the Concord in 2 wheel drive form, the Eagle (as you noted) was the 4 wheel drive.
One thing. Coup might mean sedan where rear windows dont roll down, sedan they do roll down, both have b pillers. Hard top is what the Hornet is not.

What does the SC in SC 360 mean? You Showed it in the 1969 SC/RAMBLER add. It means this model is a scrambler.

In Australia they were sold as a Rambler Hornet. AMC cars that were sold in Australia, Hornet, Javelin, Matador, Ambassador, AMX and Rebel were sold under the Rambler name but they were not a popular brand here. I heard somewhere a long time ago that the SC360 was proposed to be a Super Charged engine to compete with the larger CI engines of other manufacturers, It was slotted to go into the AMX for racing/Drag racing purposes, how true that is I can't say because the engine never got a Super charger.

The company that re assembled and converted the Ramblers to right hand drive was Australian Motor Industries based in Port Melbourne Victoria. They weren't really a car company as such, more of an importer, assembler and distributor. Super sleeper this was a car I had no idea what it was somebody requested it during the Packard video saw it in the background next to the car and I was going back there so I made it a point to do that car what an epic trade super rare car I have no idea why they didn’t sell that many I guess the same reason that I didn’t know what it was people just didn’t get it.. on paper that car is a force to be reckoned with =)

Nice original car, I grew up in the fifties and sixties. People have to realize these were considered a smaller car with limited rear seating. Same wheelbase as a corvair, camaro , mustang, cuda ect ! Not really a family car unless you had younger kids so ya no backseat room. Amc’s never got a lot of respect out on the west coast as a performance car and AMC never pushed advertising them. AMC’s were built well but they were Grandpa or Grandma’s cars

My cars were always sleepers, but I’m sorry , that’s not what I would call a sleeper ! Just because they were not common don’t make them sleeper . not with badges or as we said in the day Call outs “ on hood or fender , any car guy would know what he was up against. You have to talk softly but you have the bigger stick that’s the ingredients for a sleeper
One day I’m going to do a nostalgic episode with my favorite car that I’ve ever owned but I don’t own one at the moment. 1988 Lincoln town car signature series that car is a sleeper it would do 0 to 60 in eight seconds which doesn’t sound fast but it only had 160 hp and it was a boat

Frankly I love the look of the Gremlin. I think from the back of the doors (coupe) to the front grill looks awesome. The chopped off butt makes it look better. Now if they wouldn't have left off the pesky rear hatch.🤔😂
My sister had a '74 coupe 258 torque flights trans. Super reliable till it was totaled. Would boil the rear tires! Would haul ass!

I think you might have a clone there. I have never seen a Hornet SC/360 without a hood scoop, even the 2bbl models. And unless I'm mistaken, (and I might be) they either came with a 4-speed or automatic, never seen one with a 3-speed stick. Maybe some AMC guys out there might know better.

I might be able to shed some light on the 2 barrel vs the 4 barrel version of the SC 360 Hornet. What I believe is shown here is the base SC 360 with 2 barrel. One had a choice of 3 speed manual on the floor, or the automatic on the column. The rear gear slection was limited to either 3.15 standard, or 3.54 optional open rear end. If one optioned the SC 360 with the Go Pack, you then got the 4 barrel with the 285 horse engine, the ram air hood along with a Tach, dual exhaust. The choice of a 3 speed manual on the floor, the 4 speed manual or the automatic on the column. Rear gear choice went up to 3.91 with twin grip as as standard with the 3.91 rear. Too many other options to list here.
