Context matters. People need to remember that.
You can’t expect people to forgive your wrongs, failures, screw ups of you are not open to forgiving others. I am a Christian so if I intend to accept that Jesus forgives me of sins against him then as a follower I am expected to forgive others. That does not mean that people do not reap the consequences of their actions. But allow people to grow in their imperfections and not persecute them for things they did years ago when they have since changed and become a better person. A persons patterns of behavior and attitudes about it are what you pay attention to and define their character
Yeessss like someone who repeatedly says something after being educated then bye! But someone who made a mistake, or didn't know, or has their own justified opinion with facts shouldn't be unemployed or annexed

Something that is often forgotten is that with age comes wisdom and that something said years ago doesn't reflect who a person is today. For that reason I don't agree with "cancelling" someone for one thing they said years ago that was dug up to prove a point or be woke/ pander to trending stories.

I think we should definitely be held accountable for any hurtful mistakes we make, but also should get a chance to apologize and better ourselves. Canceling definitely can be appropriate in some situations though. Especially when people are not owning up to their mistakes or monetizing hurtful content.

I love your approach, and the term "forgiveness culture" - I think we need a whole lot more of that in this world right now. Nobody knows all of the perfect things to say or do, and we are bound to offend someone, even unintentionally. If people could stop being so "reactive" and take a step back, listen(both sides), and have a conversation, I think we would have less hatred, confusion, and conflict going on right now. Love love love your mind on this!

I agree, I would love some history as well, however I dont think this was the time or place. Correct me if I'm wrong or out of place, but i dont think the BLM movement isnt about constantly getting everyone's experience, everytime you see someone of colour. In my mind its just about opening videos and seeing more people of colour, black, Hispanic, asian, etc. We just want to SEE more variation among all industry. I hope that makes sense.

I was having this exact conversation with my husband before I saw you had a new video! I do agree there can be a time where cancelling someone/something can be a good thing, but as several others have already said, digging up old tweets and then dragging/cancelling a person when they've evolved and no longer share those old views is not a good thing. People say and do stupid things, and if they continue to stay in that cycle then yes, cancel them, don't give them that voice to be hateful. But if it was years ago and they now use their platform for good, and have grown beyond it, then punishing them now doesn't seem fair.

This age that we live in get so offended so easily, whatever happened to forgive and forget? Have thick skin? Move on? I think this younger generation acts like the world owes them something.... that if they do something wrong they wanna get off Scott free but next person who does it then yeah let’s gang up and “ cancel” them and “ ruin their career”. We all make mistakes like you said who are we to judge. We are here to help each other not bash each other

love the honesty and perspective you have for the cancel culture. my rule of thumb has been if someone i 'follow' has been doing things that i start to notice i don't typically agree/respond to/or value i continue to follow but usually there comes a tipping point when I use my aged wisdom to be like you know this person isn't bringing me value or joy i need to unfollow. Its never from a place of "well they did "THIS" so they are evil/wrong/bad" more of an changing of seasons where its not serving me based on multiple actions.

@@heidisomers I was wondering if you can check our my comment .... i have some questions around the intent of the message you were conveying at the beginning of the video and what message you are trying to convey at the end. As a person of colour , it comes off as disingenuous. I want to give the benefit of the doubt that it was not purposeful , and maybe your audience that is not BIPOC may not understand how insensitive it came off but it did. I'm not trying to call you out but there does need to be some reflection on your part not only as a white woman but an influencer how your influencing fans not to 'protest ' BLM by means of cancellation. The timing of the conversation around cancellation should have been done in a more sensitive manner when people are out there protesting for a movement.

I’m in the middle on cancel culture. I don’t think it’s right to go into the past and dig up dirt on them as people change. But if an influencer is consistently doing objectionable things in the present, and it’s clear they aren’t learning from their mistakes, then cancel culture removes a really toxic entity.
I loved this hei-tea time.. so many good points. Especially about not holding a grudge because I know from personal experience holding a grudge can really drain your energy and make you lose sight & focus of other beautiful things in your life. Also yes, the background should be your permanent place for these chats! it makes your skin look extra glowy

And I wrote that before getting to the cancel culture discussion - cancel culture had become a trend and while sometimes understandable it’s not effective because it’s creative a reason for the internet to bully others for being human. I’ve said and done a lot of dumb shhhh in my years as do all of us.
I love your perspective on cancel culture and youth. I never thought about that. I am right in the middle of the debate of cancel culture because I think it is a good thing in certain scenarios however too many people are too quick to immediately cancel others. I appreciate the fact that companies and people are being held more responsible for their behaviour because for so long serious scandals have been able to be covered up if you had the right connections. But good people do make mistakes and I would hate for them to suffer a punishment that does not suit the crime or rob them of a opportunities to grow.

Great conversation topic & thanks for sharing your side. I think forgiveness is really important. Like you said, someone can do something “stupid” realize they want to lead their life in a better direction & do so. Everyone deserves another chance to better themselves & we should be supportive of those around us & encourage them. I do like how you mentioned that there are unforgivable things though too.
The internet is ruthless, you make a tiny mistake and it’s there forever. And if you’re slightly known there will be forums full of your past shit, real and made up. It’s scary.
I would love to see Hei-Tea time in a real time discussion format, maybe even like a podcast?! These topics would be really interesting to get some conversation and dialogue going because I feel that a lot of these are difficult to say how you feel in just a short comment and I would love to hear you expand on what you think and hear someone else’s opinion about it too! Personally I’m somewhere in between... there is definitely some instanced that are just unforgivable but we HAVE to be allowed to make mistakes and LEARN and GROW! If we scare everyone with the idea of cancel culture we run the risk is everyone staying silent in fear or being overtly fake because they want to come off as perfect when in reality, no one is perfect. I think it depends on what they did, anything of the lines of condoning hate towards a group of people is not ok. Many times I feel like the only reason why they apologize is because they got caught not because they think its wrong.

I agree with a lot of what you said about cancel culture too, I think a lot of the time it doesn't take into account that people make mistakes and also change/grow/learn. I don't think it's necessarily right to cancel someone for a mistake they made while in an entirely different stage of life...depending on what that thing is of course.
