I've played this way since 2018. To me, there's no point in grinding any profession and risk burn out. So I just do whatever I feel like. Most my time I just wander around and occasionally will pick up a mission, run a bunker, do random investigation and delivery missions. I just enjoy the freedom and visuals.

@@Jewifer333x2 CR once said their goal is for there to be so much to do around every planet and moons that you'll rarely have need to travel a lot. Span that out around a whole system and multiple systems and there should never be a short supply of things to do.

This - I go out in the vulture, crack some ships and scrape 'em, load up my Lancer with the goods, fly it back when I have 800k-1mil, then use that to fund me for the day, and fly back and grab whatever ship and head out to do some random stuff.

The first thing I noticed... Is that you walk most everywhere. And that is so much more enjoyable, and easier on the mind. We're so focused on what CIG is doing tomorrow, and we sometimes forget to smell the flowers that a dev planted yesterday.
    Thanks for this, Mac. o7

I recently just started chilling out and exploring planets, I don’t make much money off any the way I play but I cover my costs without trying tbh

This is exactly how I've played SC since I started as well as Elite Dangerous 8n the past. I've never understood Min/Max'ers because it felt sterile and rushed. It feels almost like a deliberate attempt to disregard the sheer magnitude of the game. There so much to experience.
As a space dad, I tend to decide what I want to do before I even log in because actually playing SC this way takes a LOT of time and I want to make the best of it. I've pledged over 45 vehicles now after just a little over a year of being a backer because I want to have choices in what I do and how I do it.

Lately I've gotten into the habit of playing more like a Nomad. Just seeing where I can drift to, looking for points of interest or seeing how I can sustain myself off the land living off natural resources. Now I just have to try it in an actual C.O. Nomad and I'll be living the life!

I tend to wake up (Spawn in) get som food, look around the staton or landing area. Fly over to another space station and check out whats there. Not just run the DPS site to know where everything is. It's way more fun experiancing it on the go. Flying down to some random location on a moon and checking it out. On the way out take a mission, even if it's just a one box cargo transfer. This way is not a forced, I need this much money... I just get there when I get there!

True story: Last night I died in my Mole (w/a load of ore) when I used a side turret but forgot my helmet. Respawning I thought "Hey, why not try to recover my body and ship?" So I called up my Prospector and flew out to the death marker, sure enough, my Mole was hovering about 60 meters over the site where I'd died, but how to get in? I decided to use the Prospector to force my mole down to the surface where I could access the elevator. Slowly bumped it down from above...tough because by then a dark night and the Mole was over a slope. After parking the Prospector on top the hill and sliding down the slope I was just able to jump on the elevator and once in, looted my dead body. Then I flew the Mole into space, dumped my dead body (laughing as I chucked it out the elevator) and continued on to the refinery to process the ore (about $300k) and claim my Prospector...mission accomplished. Just another day in the verse!

When I log in to Star Citizen I usually just go with the flow and see where events take me. It's fun to try out all different kinds of professions and activities, from exploring places I haven't visited yet, to mining, salvaging, doing a bounty in between, transporting some cargo from a refinery to where I can sell it, figuring out how game mechanics work. I've seen people in the chat already burned out while playing for a few weeks after they only did one thing over and over again because it's currently the best money making activity. That's a sad way to spend your time playing in SC, I think.

I feel like Mac's Scrap will become one of those legendary places in the game, that every new player visits to get component upgrades at a good price, and just to 'meet Mac' and get advice; more of a fixture than any of the sanctioned locations. Mac and his shop will be the kind of thing that will really give the PU life to the rest of us.

Also, I'm pretty convinced it was my Mustang, you've digested at 14:30. It was one of my 1st bounty hunting missions - there was a guy in Dunboro that I was supposed to "bring in". Unfortunately he "brought me in" harder because it was late night and 18+ server fps. I came back, lasered him from the sky in a freshly claimed Mustang and grabbed my body back. I went through my recordings and confirmed I left it in exactly that spot somewhere around January 12th.

Love everything you said, I personally get great joy of helping out new players, taking them on missions to show them the ropes, show them possibilities & giving new players a taste of those unique verse experiences.
One of my favorite experiences was getting downed by a glitched derelict carrack & having someone come across the verse to help me out & then we attempted to explore the carrack to no avail, but didn't care cus it was such a fun experience & sharing it with another random citizen was just so magical, & that citizen inspired me to be a medic and save other citizens!
So excited for 2024 and beyond.

I think the player-initiated missions would be an absolute game-changer. And in fact, there could be job-like missions, for example like a police monitoring position, where you get paid by time and your task is to monitor all player criminal activity (attacks on comm links, Karreah, etc), where you, as a "dispatcher" would create emergency missions that would have players help the AI security fight back.
CIG could utilize the imagination of players too (like there are so many modders in other games) - there could be a portal where players can script events in accordance to the lore, and CIG would just need to review such a mission, approve it, and it becomes an occurrence in-game.

  • @Brunnen_Gee
    @Brunnen_Gee 3 місяці тому

This is how I've always imagined the game should be played. It's _not_ about constantly grinding credits, it's _not_ about obsessively grinding to the next ship. The point is to be out there, doing things in the universe, spontaneous emergent gameplay, and just having fun.

Greetings Ryan. I'm sorry I don't usually post on your videos, even though I watch them regularly. You've chatted with me over on Twitch a few times and I enjoy your videos. I like what you've been doing here with using an established outpost as a base and going out to salvage wrecks. I also loved your zero to hero series, and wish there were more regularly. For me, what you so by role playing and doing something different, makes SC interesting. Knowing SC is still in Alpha, I haven't done the same, as you never know when things change. This is what SC should be. I wish I could find a place where I could bring several of my ships and use them as needed. Ground vehicles too, considering I have a good sized fleet of both. I'm with you where Org's can establish bases and operate out of them. I want to say thank you for your videos, and the inspiration that you give with them. Take care, fly safe, and I'll see you in the verse.

For me it is not about earning the highest amount of spacebucks per hour, but more about the joy i am getting out of living my life in the Verse, doing what i love most. spacetrucking.
Be it from outpost to outpost with processed foods or booze, or a scrap run to all the space stations, or shipping hydrogen to stations. it is not about the money for me, but the experience and fun with people i meet and help along the way.
I also hardly ever run in the game. taking my time, just walking everywhere i need to go,. Seeing people run around me jumping up and down in their white spacesuits, it shows me that most people don't play the game like this lol.

I watched this video through to the end without signing in 🤦‍♂️ so I am watching it again to appease the algorithm. I did bounty and cargo missions to make my money. With a fleet of 32 ships I was in the “Alpha Rut”. For the last few months however, I have just been trying to live off the grid in the verse. The weird opportunities that have presented themselves and the unexpected outcomes are far better than a boring cargo run in my C2 or a high end bounty in my Lightning etc. I don’t care too much about the money anymore. Camping out in my Cutter is where I am now. Just wearing simple clothing in my ship rather than space gear is very relaxing and I highly recommend it. A huge plus for me in SC Is it’s massive size. I enjoy the solitary experience. In the real world I work in a Government office. High stress, too many people with agenda’s etc. SC lets me leave that all behind. Great videos as always mate. Cheers.

There's an interesting psychological phenomenon where we'll value measurable things more than non-measurable. As money is the only thing you can really measure in SC, then it becomes the metric people tend to value. If locations visited became a metric, we'd see people try and max that.
The more measurable "things" they can add to the game, the more options the main crowd will have to play towards.

Constraining yourself to typical pursuits may yield expected rewards, but SC has the potential to let you do a lot more than your typical POV/Flight Sim sandbox already... like, hundreds of hours of gameplay... and it isn't even a real game yet! Being able to afford to buy everything in-game ruins the joy of playing and achieving.
What you explained in the video is exactly how I imagined playing and how I will enjoy SC for many years to come.
I've never visited a bunker or cave, like many experiences, I'll leave that to the time when there are fewer bugs to ruin the play experience.

In my 25 years of non-stop gaming what i've learned is that players tend to sacrifice fun/enjoyment for the "best" way to progress in a game, wich is making money to have "stronger" ships in the case of SC. People are not used to sandbox-like games, for most players if the dev doesn't take his hand and show him the content to "progress", they fail to see the content in the game, therefore there IS no content.

I was living the verse, but then the patch wiped the carrack i use as homebase for the narratives my org roleplays.
So then I worked this mishap in to the narrative to give me an in-game reason to go the industrialist route. Thus the office carrack has been impounded.

Im a little annoyed with having to run through the same things when starting, catching the metro, realize its the wrong one, going to star port, take off, take 2 minute break for taking off into atmosphere. etc. Id love to love to just spawn in my ships bed, somewhere in a safe zone or at a space station parking lot.

This is generally the way I have been playing for some time too. Primarily because I do not want to build a bad habit of not taking care of my ship my items and myself especially for when these things really start to matter. A secondary effect is this style of gameplay more often than not results in some emergent gameplay outside of the context of missions. I believe that is where some of the best experiences will come from are the missions we make for ourselves and others and that do not come out of the mission system as much. As stated those could be a catalyst but only as a starting point to a larger adventure or two.

I can't accomplish anything in SC, the loop seems to be: make five minutes' progress then scurry back to somewhere you can log out because the game disconnects if it catches you enjoying it.

I play in a similar style and totally agree that's the mindset that people will have to get used to in the future. In forum responses, I liken this game to Fishing/Hunting/Camping rather than a traditional game. I use football as th easiest example: You join, you are given a team, a role, an opposition, and a winstate. Star Citizen doesn thave any of that, so people gravitate to the UEC grind because that is the most familiar "game" presented. Now Fishing for example, its considered a game, but you can do it however you like. You can follow rules, you can just tie something to a stick, or you can use it as an excuse to just day-drink. Catch a fish or not, the win-state is what you make it and how well you prepared for ahead of time. Practicing builds the skill to increase chance of success. But the river doesnt care what you do, the birds and fish dont care, and neither does the weather. It will continue with or without you. SC also has a similar difficulty; Start off on your own with little study in what you are doing.....how well will you catch a fish? Did you prepare for the cold front coming in at 3pm? Do you think it would have been better if someone else was there? Did you bring a lunch?
I can lose an entire day in SC with friends, and we may never earn money, but we are out there for the experience and skill building. We also treat the server conditions like this month before the hotfixes as a weather report; how likely will our plans be changed by the environment? Should we just plan to drink on discord as a backup while we watch the rythmic desync?
And thus each session can still be fun regardless of the server conditons.

Nothing makes me want to go outside more than watching these videos. Honestly, there is no point in doing anything or building anything as its just going to be destroyed anyway. Hopefully you still feel like building back whenever this game becomes whatever it does.

I had a debate last night with a guy about how - once the game releases - we'll likely see more community events from the players themselves, more Org's putting things together, etc... I compared it to SWG and UO, where a lot of the enjoyment was derived from players making their own stuff to do, like Speeder races, tournaments, group mining/harvesting get-togethers, etc.
He told me "Lol that doesn't ever happen. There'll never be a game that has that kind of community to it", and chat proceeded to jump on him immediately with SWG, EVE, and about 5 other MMO's that have had that kind of "The community drives the game/economy". It's very clear there's a group of folks playing that think the whole game revolves around dogfighting, and not the "live in this universe" aspect. I wonder how big the outcry will be down the road, when those kind of folks realize you might have to rely on the other players for certain goods/weapons/resources, once stuff like base building and crafting starts to make its way in.

I wanted to make a lot of money while it was easy, and now that I don’t have to worry about money I can go back to just exploring places and doing lots of fun stuff. Making my own gameplay and wandering the ground finding the exceptional beauty of the game. It’s pretty great. And on the upside once a decent amount of base building gets added I’m going to be able to dive hard into that without trying to figure out how to get the aUEC to fund it. That’s really what I’m waiting for.

When it comes to new players, I really think that CIG would benefit from doing a free fly 3 days a month, or quarterly, having a weekly free fly event. We really need to lower the barrier to access for a game that's not finished. I think it would be a lot of fun as well for us more ingrained players to come across people who are willing to jump on and help run a reclaimer or a turret, just to learn.
Incorporating regular free fly events can significantly impact player acquisition and retention rates. Statistics show that games offering frequent free or low entry events experience a surge in new player engagement and a boost in community interaction. This approach not only fosters a welcoming environment for newcomers but also promotes player cooperation and camaraderie within the existing player base.

It's because what attracts people to the game are the videos and ships, what's most attractive are the ships, people look at the world and think it's incredible, but after 1 hour of looking at the world, their interaction changes and goes straight to the Ships, if you buy the 45 dollar version, you don't expect to spend another 300 on a ship, so you go back to earning money by playing and getting money is not difficult, it takes a lot of time, which makes everyone look for ways to get more money, If veteran players do this, the goal of making money is the first thing they will advise new players

Honestly, this is how I enjoy Star Citizen the most. I'm looking forward to seeing more professions and a more natural feel than people just treating it like it's GTA. Hopefully, that day comes when they fill the verse out more with more than just combat game play. Hope to see you out in the verse sometime Ryan.

I play how you play. What actually really puts me off is logging on and people wanting to grind money or min/max gear. Few people just want to explore or chill or just goof off. People are very determined to just get what they can out of it. Knowing full well at some point there will be a wipe and all that work will be erased

A lot of people tend to just jump on SC and get right on a fighter ship and out looking for people to take out (which is fine). But I think many of them miss the other gameplay cause of it, maybe they come from a background of PVP loot and shoot games, I dunno. Maybe they just don't enjoy it.
When I play SC I play it more like RP for myself, I want the verse to feel lived in, I want some kind of "story" for my character. I despise PvP gameplay and I avoid it at all costs so my focus are only industrial gameplay. Trading, Mining, Salvage, Refuel etc. I mostly live on my Hull C going from planets to planets trading cargo to different stations. It feels like it has an impact when you see the stock of items go up and down.
I don't even have a weapon or PVP gear on me or helmets (Like 99.9% of players) I fly my ship, dock, walk the station, trading goods, depart and fly away, all of the time in my civilian outfit. Just some regular civilian uniform I thought was fitting for my crew, It's awesome to do it when you use a docking port, feels like you're a captain on a ship, I don't like the landing pads or hangars lol.
I stock my ships food area with food and drinks on the counter so I can be out for long. My ship feels lived in, some cans and food garbage around the food area due to me eating and drinking. My ship have been alive for weeks now. I don't like logging in, do pvp and just press ESC when I'm done. The money META is also kinda cheesy and boring.
I wish there was more to do on the ships though and I bet it'll come sometime. But for now I space truck, enjoying the view, talking in chat, watching UA-cam on the side and explore the verse. I make enough money to keep the ship going and a little bit of profit after that. For me it's perfect.

Definitely agree with your thoughts on the current state of playing in the 'verse. I think most people use the "go to gameplay" of making money because the "game" isn't sufficiently developed to allow for a more complex mechanic that allows people to pick their own goals and motivations and then work towards that. Most of what's available is based on making money through one way or another. You're right when you say that this will change (3:04) as the game gets better developed.

Yeah, the perception that grinding for money to earn ships is the whole game (or worse, that that grind and the necessary occasional wipes is just incentive to make you pay real cash for ships) is to miss the point entirely. It's like building your Lego set from the instructions and then declaring that there's no more play value to be had. The point is to do what you want, not speedrunning a set of scripted missions or following a rigid career path to its pinnacle.

I've been a citizen right at the transition 0f 3.17 to 3.18. That was an interesting experience. I knew I was jumping into a game under development. I expected challenges. Well, jump to today, I had settled on ROC Mining to get a few of the ships I really wanted. But as I see it, Star Citizen is an adventure. Sure, eventually, I'll earn the ships soon enough, But you are right. Break away from a routine and witness what you are missing. I'm slowly getting comfortable on ship flying, and swinging the fat-ass Freelancer Max around to land in certain places (part of the adventure), and the thickness of this huge environment's details. I get why it's taking so long to get past Beta. I support your advice. Just when you think you've seen everything, a new scenario exposes itself.
