To answer your question, Seph: There is a reason why I don't really listen to this one. It makes me all kinds of melancholic. And I don't want to feel blue and melancholic.
I want to feel happy. Especially on good days 😊
But one verse that comes to mind from one of my favorite songs ever is from "Cry To Me" recorded by Solomon Burke:
    Nothing can be sadder
Than a glass of wine all alone
    Loneliness, loneliness
Is such a waste of time
    (Oh yes).
There are songs like "Barbie Girl" (which is what it is)
Then there are songs like this one.
And when you have songs like this one sung in such a way as Elvis sang it... Well yes.
Yes it has quite an emotional impact.
For me it makes me miss loved ones that are no longer here. Friends I let go of. People I once had a connection with but our lives just drifted too far apart.
As Frank Sinatra once sang, "That's Life".
Or as Doris Day once sang, "Que Sara, Que Sara (What Will Be Will Be).
I believe that both can be true: Each of us can be captains of our own fate but also sometimes you have to just let go and realize you can't control outside forces or the actions (or inaction) of others.
Sometimes you just have to leave it up to serendipity or fate or God or whatever it is you believe it is that puts two people on intertwining paths only to divert their individual courses once again.
    Maybe it's meant to be.
    Maybe it's not.
I've adopted the attitude, "If it happens, it happens; if it doesn't, it doesn't."
I guess that makes me a fatalist. That I believe, at least partly, in Fate.
It is a beautiful experience, the experience of love, but with love comes the risk of and the inevitability of (in the case of death) loss.
Why do we continue to risk such a heartache?
Because love is worth it. For the majority of us.
    Anyhoodles... My how I do 🎶Run On🎶😄
Right, right, right. Enough of the mushy stuff. Let's get to TCB'ing, shall we?
    Recording Session Info Below:
"For The Good Times" written by Kris Kristofferson.

    Guitar: Charlie Hodge
    Guitar: Joe Esposito
    Piano: Glen D. Hardin

      "Friends I let go of..."
"Each of us can be captains of our own fate but also sometimes you have to just let go..."
This feeling of the need or desire to let go is one that resonates with me particularly acutely. And it reminds me of a lyric that I often think of from a Nada Surf song "Blizzard Of '77"...
"On a plane ride the more it shakes the more I have to let go." A clear reference to a tumultuous relationship.
While I have found it easy to let go of some relationships that were no longer positive, others are stored in fast access cache memory, ready at an instant to be recalled and re-lived, with all the attendant emotions intact.

Elvis, who rarely did his own harmony, did sing harmony on this track as well as Separate Ways. It is interesting that you think it is another singer singing harmony, when it is actually Elvis himself. If you listen carefully, he does change his vocals slightly for his harmony track compared to his main vocals.

Written by Kris Kristofferson in 1968. I've always loved this song. One of the best in my opinion. Of course, Elvis is exquisite. It makes me feel nostalgic more than sad, but it certainly is sad.

2nd Comment: Song Info: For the Good Times" is a song written by Kris Kristofferson, first recorded by singer Bill Nash in 1968 before appearing on Kristofferson's own debut album in June 1970. After a recording by Ray Price became a #1 hit single in June of that year, the song established Kristofferson as one of country and popular music's top songwriters while giving Price his first chart-topping country and western song in 11 years.
For the Good Times" continued to be recorded by a number of artists in subsequent years, to popular success. It became a staple of soul singer Al Green's concert repertoire in the 1970s, also featuring as a studio recording on his 1972 album I'm Still in Love with You. A version by Perry Como spent 27 weeks on the UK Singles Chart peaking at #7 in August 1973 and spent 13 weeks on the Irish Singles Chart, peaking at #1 for 2 weeks in November 1973.
Kristofferson wrote most of the song in 1968 while on a work-related road trip from Nashville to the Gulf of Mexico. It recounts the end of a love affair, based on a real life experience of his, in a manner that popular music scholar Steve Sullivan said "conveys sadness, acceptance, and longing".
An early recording of the song was by Bill Nash on Smash Records in 1968. Kristofferson's own recording appeared on self-titled debut album in April 1970.
And that's all I've got for this one Seph & everyone!
    *Fingers crossed this goes through*

No worries, m. stimson! There are countless interviews with and about Elvis, documentaries, articles, concert clips, outtakes, rehearsals, home movies, etc. on the internet and YT. He also made 31 movies. If you Google his discography, you can listen to every song he ever recorded (700+). There have been a ton of books written about him. You just have to sift through all the untruths that are also out there. If you're new to Elvis, enjoy the fascinating and unique journey!

You're right, Seph; Elvis likes (I'm intentionally using present tense!) voices and instruments all up in the mix. As for the harmony vocal, that is Elvis! He dubbed his harmony vocal on "Separate Ways," too. Elvis was cutting heart-felt songs about partings, loss and loneliness around this period. In my view, he's - unconsciously or consciously - combining the story in the song with the reality of his own pain. Being a sincere singer, his tone has become a little deeper in pain than before.

Yes it is sad and when you mentioned the past girlfriends and emotional times when you split up i've had so many of them so it does get me. As a song it's one I loved for a time then didn't but eventually always came back to. On the 'live' versions I think it is Charlie Hodge singing with Elvis but Elvis voice is clearer, especially on the Madison Square Garden versions from June 1972. Well done again Seph for another honest reaction. A lot of Bangers left to come though some even after he sadly passed. "That is upsetting man. You can think back on past relationships and whatever, you know, and it's things like... it's just the tiny little things that you actually remember and it comes back to you after you've split up. And it's like, 'Oh, yeah. I used to do that with my girl, my guy, you know, my ex." (1:21)
God, when you said this it felt like you were referencing a memory I shared about my ex-bf in the comments just a little while back. I wrote that the most powerful things that I hold dear are the memories of the tender moments we shared. The simplest ones. Falling asleep together, my head on his shoulder, arm resting gently on his chest.
