    Love love love this one! Totally agree re rice cookers doing so much more! I’ve made a couple of dishes from the included booklet with my rice cooker - like jambalaya, etc. - and they came out fabulous with almost ZERO effort, just like you say. Thank you for the instructions on how to do oatmeal in it; I love oatmeal with bananas, blueberries, walnuts, maple syrup, cinnamon, chia seeds, water, and a bit of cream. Oh man. Yum.

And when craving something savory will mix cooked oats with Better than Bouillon it's like a quick soup almost makes me think of Barley soup. The versatility of oats is amazing!!

    Thanks for an inspiring video. QUESTION: what do you do differently when cooking steel cut oats in a rice cooker? I am asking because the the grain to water ratio and the cooking times are SO different than old fashioned rolled oats, and I am guessing that there are differences in how you cook them in the rice cooker. Thanks again!

    • @IWantToCook
      @IWantToCook  2 дні тому

      So I actually haven't tried that, but I would think it's possible. I would start by either doubling the water ratio or going 1.5 times more. If your rice cooker has a "brown rice" setting, I would do that; otherwise, proceed as normal and hit the "cook" button. It might take a few tries and experimenting, but should work in the end. Cheers!

    Good video overall. One miss however, you did not tell us what the ratio of water to oatmeal is. Is it 1x1? you used 3 cups, does the 3 mark in your rice cooker correspond to 3 cups? or something else. You left that a little confusing and ambiguous.

    • @IWantToCook
      @IWantToCook  3 місяці тому

      Thanks and good question. Come to think of it, I’ve never worked out the rice cooker-specific ratio. To do so, I think one would need to fill the cooker with oats, just we do with rice, fill with water to the corresponding line, then dump everything out, straining the oats from the water and measuring the water, then doing some math to find the ratio. All that said, if I had to guess a ratio of liquid to oats for a rice cooker, I would peg it at 1.5 to 1 or 2 to 1. Cheers!

    Has echos of Roger Ebert's "put everything into the pot", where he was steaming pretty much everything in a rice cooker during his later years.
    Vegetables, eggs, meats; everything into the pot.

    I’m going to try this. Should I use the porridge setting on my cooker?

    • @IWantToCook
      @IWantToCook  Рік тому +2

      I’d go with just a basic white rice setting. That should be quicker; I believe the porridge settings take a very long time and are better for something like congee made from rice. Hope you enjoy!

    When I make my rice, I always make lots extra. That way, I can freeze individual servings to be used later, either in recipes or as a side dish. Now, I am wondering, could I make extra oatmeal and do the same thing? I have never tried to freeze prepared oatmeal before, so I don’t know if it is a good idea or not. I am going to look up your instructional on cooking quinoa in my rice cooker, but I tried cooking arboreal rice, and was not pleased with the outcome. Either I did it wrong or arboreal rice is one that should be done on top of the stove, adding the liquid as recommended.TY for all your helpful tips.

    • @IWantToCook
      @IWantToCook  Рік тому

      Thanks for watching! I have not tried freezing oatmeal, but I think it would be a decent candidate. It might be a bit mushier when re-heated, but otherwise should be good. As for arborio rice, that can be tricky, and i'm not surprised it didn't work well in the rice cooker -- and know that it isn't your fault. That rice has a specific starch component, and requires a lot of stirring for best results, thus that's how we make risotto. Oh, and here's the link to the rice cooker quinoa video: arborio -- Cheers!

      My daughter does this. She scoops the oatmeal into a muffin pan then puts it in the freezer. Taking a premeasured amount for her breakfast every day. I'm sorry I don't know exactly how she warms it up or how it tastes but she eats it often

      I forget if I mentioned it in video (and have very laggy internet now to re-watch, sorry) but go ahead and add to your preference when cooking. I usually start with 1/4 cup and then add more as desired when serving - along with a pat of butter 😀

    I made mine and it stuck to the bottom of my cooker, does it make a difference if I use soy milk?

    • @IWantToCook
      @IWantToCook  3 місяці тому

      Not sure if it was the soy milk or the ratio of liquid to oats. I would try again and add more liquid - in this case the soy milk - and see if that helps. Hope it does. 🙏
