I was 16 and driving my car down the road...this song came on the radio and I couldn't believe what I was hearing...the DJ said it was by Bob Dylan and I pulled into the nearest store and bought Desire...2 weeks later I had a half dozen Dylan albums and played them to death. That was over 4 decades ago. I'll always remember that first moment and the thrill of listening to Dylan...nobody comes close to his talent and genius.
The first time i heard this song was when i had a Russian in my Taxi in England , he started shouting "The Hurricane is fucking great" ??? I honestly thought he was talking about the weather, it was only later when i played the CD again that i realised i had a Bob Dylan master piece in my car :)

You are so right. In 1976 I drove 900 miles to visit my brother and I had forgotten my 8 track case with all my tapes. This album “Desire” had been released a few months before my trip and the tape was in my tape deck. I listened to it over and over for 900 miles and never tired of it. I’ve seen Dylan perform about 80 times over the years and except those 8 years Larry Campbell was his guitar player I enjoyed the ‘70’s the most.

The part seldom told is that she replaced the lead guitarist scheduled for that album. In her words: "I actually replaced a lead guitarist that was supposed to be on the album, and was already on the album. That was in full progress before I walked in - and that guitarist was Eric Clapton."

I like music as much as the next guy. But I don't form opinions based upon songs. Artists as a group are fairly flakey people and are not predisposed to logic and reason. I wouldn't want to fly in an airplane designed by artists (if that were even possible). I know a little bit about the case of Hurricane Carter because I had relatives in Jersey who were living close by at the time this went down. Carter was in fact guilty. There is no getting around it. NEVER get your history from Hollywood.
If someone asked why Bob Dylan is considered to be a legendary poet/songwriter/performer I would use this video. Dylan is a major influence on our music history over the last 50 years. To understand the music in the 1960s into the 80s you got to listen to Dylan.

First heard this on a radio program called ALBUM REPLAY on CFMI, I was 15 or 16 and I listened to this program every night, back then FM radio was something only the old folks listened to but I didnt care, I would shoot pool in my Grandma Mann's basement ( THE BEST GRANDMOTHER EVER!!!!!! ) and all of this new music would flow over me and started me on the lifelong quest to see, hear & enjoy as much music as I could. I heard this song, the DJ explained a bit of the story behind it, next day I was at the library trying to find out all I could, a defining moment in my musical life and I saw DYLAN every time I could, but I never will again, the last time I saw him he butchered TANGLED UP IN BLUE so badly I ended up leaving, but still a great memory of first hearing this

First heard this on a radio program called ALBUM REPLAY on CFMI, I was 15 or 16 and I listened to this program every night, back then FM radio was something only the old folks listened to but I didnt care, I would shoot pool in my Grandma Mann's basement ( THE BEST GRANDMOTHER EVER!!!!!! ) and all of this new music would flow over me and started me on the lifelong quest to see, hear & enjoy as much music as I could. I heard this song, the DJ explained a bit of the story behind it, next day I was at the library trying to find out all I could, a defining moment in my musical life and I saw DYLAN every time I could, but I never will again, the last time I saw him he butchered TANGLED UP IN BLUE so badly I ended up leaving, but still a great memory of first hearing this

Took me 2 months to learn it without looking at the lyrics. Its not an easy song to sing thats for sure

The lyrics that this man comes up with are just great. Hurricane and Ballad of a thin man is definitly my two favorites
